With Libby Gleeson’s gentle, lyrical text and gorgeous watercolor art by bestselling illustrator Jedda Robaard, Soon is sure to delight, and subtly prepares children for the arrival of their own new sibling.
"I was born in Young, a small town in south western NSW in 1950. After a few years we moved to Glen Innes, on the northern tablelands and then when I was ten we moved out west to Dubbo. We moved because my father was a schoolteacher and each change meant a promotion for him.
There were six children in the family. I was number three and there wasn't a lot of money. We didn't have television and of course there was no such thing as a computer.
Books and reading were hugely important. I remember going to the library on a Saturday morning and borrowing five or six books and reading them all by Sunday night.
When I finished High School I studied at the University of Sydney. I had a great time studying mainly history but also getting involved in lots of things happening at the University and the city. It was the time of the anti-Vietnam war protests and the rise of the Women's Movement.
I taught for two years in a small town, Picton, which is just outside of Sydney. I really enjoyed that time but I wanted to travel and in 1976 I headed off for five years. I based myself first in Italy where I taught English and then in London where I started writing my first novel, Eleanor, Elizabeth. I attended a creative writing group where the other students pushed me to write a better book. In London I also met my husband. We came back to Sydney in 1980. We've got three daughters.
When we first came back I taught at the University of NSW but now I write full-time. I've written thirty books and I've also taught occasional courses in creative writing and I've visited lots of schools to talk about my work.
I write picture books, novels for young kids and also novels for slightly older readers. I've done a book about writing and also a small amount of writing for television: Bananas in Pyjamas and Magic Mountain.
The writer's life is pretty good. It's a job where you work for yourself, in your daggy track suit, at times that suit you. What more could you ask for?"
A sweet story about a heavily pregnant mother mouse and her young daughter who constantyl asks when will the baby arrive - soon! This is an anthropomorphic familiar tale where the story line and appearance oand actions of the mice are clearly human - grocery shopping, painting the babies room etc. However, the illustrator, Jedda Robaard has added a clever twist that adds a furhter dimension to the story. the pastel paintings show the mice as creative engineers as they take repurpose human objects to purpose - a toothbrush for painting, matchbox for a bed, a matchbox wagon for grocery shopping etc and this viist is to scale as they pass by huge cans of fruit. As such, the story goes beyond presenting a familiar and comforting family scenario with the coming of a new baby to also stimulate the creative spirit - I can imagine many a young reader creating a miniature mouse house after sharing this book.
A sweet book about waiting for a new baby to arrive. The illustrations in this one are so sweet as the mouse mama and sister prepare for baby’s arrival. “When will the baby come, Mom?” “Soon.” I’m sure that all expecting parents with older kiddos will relate to the repeated question throughout the book.
A sweet little story about a little mouse whose mother is pregnant and who is waiting and waiting for the baby to come. The illustrations are lovely and one day the baby is there. No doubt a great story to read with a child who is about to get a sibling. I think the story went over the head of my toddler (who is not about to get a sibling)!
Soon is a great book about the anticipation that comes with a new baby. Little Mouse helps her mother prepare for the baby and is a great book to read to little ones who have a sibling on the way. The warm colors really make the book a positive experience for the kids and preschoolers would be a great audience for this book. Its not a overly wordy book but really gets the message across well.
A very cute book about waiting for a new baby to come, preparing for the new arrival, and the older (but young) sibling asking, "When will the baby come, Mom?" The older sibling and mother wash baby clothes, get toys and the nursery ready, and go about normal tasks while waiting.
