Her husband is missing.

Visiting her family’s South Carolina estate, socialite Gray Godfrey wakes from a night out to an empty bed. Her husband Paul is gone and a thrashing hangover has wiped her memory clean. At first, she’s relieved for the break from her tumultuous marriage; perhaps Paul just needed some space. But when his car is found abandoned on the highway, Gray must face the truth: Paul is gone. And Gray may not want him found.

Her life is unraveling.

When a stranger named Annie calls claiming to know Paul’s whereabouts, Gray reluctantly accepts her help. But this ally is not what she seems: soon Annie is sending frightening messages and revealing disturbing secrets only Gray could know. As Annie’s threats escalate and Gray’s grip on reality begins to slip, the life she thought she had and the dark truth she’s been living begin to merge, leaving an unsettling question: What does Annie want? And what will she do to get it?

A chilling look at marriage, madness, and the lives we think we lead, WHEN YOU FIND ME is a daring debut from a talented new voice in psychological suspense.

Gray’s life has been spinning out of control for years. Her drinking is a feeble attempt to mask her pain.
This year, she and her husband Paul have chosen to return to her hometown to celebrate the holidays.
What do they say about never being able to go back? Gray probably should’ve taken this sage advice.

A night of tossing back drinks with friends rapidly degenerates into the beginning of a nightmare that Gray can’t wake from. Paul has vanished! Gray is left with both a massive hangover and some troublesome questions. Who did she really marry, and… has her entire life been one big lie?

This book started slowly, but quickly ramped-up and I was all in! Once again, I thoroughly convinced myself that I had it completely figured out. Yup…knew exactly where this was going. I am humbled! Wow! What a shocker of an ending! Did not see that coming!!

P.J. Vernon has a deceptive way of completely holding your focus. So much so, that before you realize it, the hour is late and you’re the only one left awake in the house. Curled up in your chair, white-knuckling your kindle!

A fabulously fun, entertaining buddy read with Susanne!🍁

4 Surprising Stars.

Gray Godfrey is a socialite who likes her alcohol. Unfortunately for her, it creates a teensy weensy little problem when she drinks to excess - she can’t remember a thing, which for her, happens more often than not.

Gray’s hometown also happens to make her anxious. So does her husband, Paul. When he goes missing their first night back, she thinks nothing of it, especially since she can’t remember a darn thing. Things only get worse the longer she’s back in town and I’m not even talking about the fact that her husband is unaccounted for.

What happens here is simply cray-freaking-cray to the absolute max! It was so completely unexpected and yet on another plane, it made complete sense. Frakking Brilliant! That is all.

“When You Find Me” by P.J. Vernon is a domestic suspense that is full of surprises. Though it was slow to start, once it got going it took off like rocket and I simply couldn’t read it fast enough. This mystery/suspense was so not what I thought it would be and that is what made it so darn good!

Kudos to P. J. Vernon for the beautiful, swoon-worthy cover!

This was another buddy read with Kaceey! So glad we stuck this one out, it was worth it!

Thank you to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books and P.J. Vernon for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

A tip of the hat to you P.J. Vernon because you successfully tricked me with this one! Well played, indeed!

Gray Godfrey is about to return to her hometown of Elizabeth, S.C. to spend Christmas with her family at her husband, Paul's, urging. Gray doesn't have fond memories of Elizabeth or her family home, Piper Point.

At the Christmas Eve church service Gray and her sister Charlotte bump into a childhood friend that urges them to go to Ruby's, a local drinking establishment, after the service has ended. Paul is adamant that he does not want to go. Why? Gray is a raging alcoholic that has already had several drinks over the course of the day but he acquiesces with Gray's promise of only having one.

A kiss, a fight, the fury and now Paul has gone missing. If only Gray could remember what happened on that Christmas Eve night.

Then the voicemails start arriving from Annie. She claims she knows Paul and knows what has happened. She has highly sensitive information she needs to share with Gray. Then the message cuts off. Gray desperate for answers can only sit back and wait to see if Annie tries to make contact again. I assure you this will not be the last she hears from Annie. Who is Annie and what exactly does she know?

This was domestic suspense done right and I was glued to the pages!

THAT ENDING!!! WOW!!!

Thank you to Crooked Lane books for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review!

In the glut of domestic psychological suspense thrillers these days, it's hard to figure out what makes one work while another doesn't. The twists have to work, of course, if they don't feel satisfying it's all moot. But even if the twists work, you also have to have stakes. And it may feel like having someone missing or dead is stakes, but not necessarily.

In this book a man was missing, maybe dead, but we knew little about him, no one seemed to like him all that much, and whether he was alive or dead didn't seem to make much of a difference to anyone. And his wife, who was still very much alive, didn't seem to exist much outside of a drinking problem and a past trauma she'd like to forget. I stuck with it, thinking things would turn around, a violation of my own advice and thus here I am with a not-great review. (Don't finish books you aren't loving, kids!)

It could have been 3 stars and just a meh, but it also includes one of my least favorite hooks (alcoholic character who can't remember what happened) and one of my least favorite twists (won't spoil it for you) so that took it down a star.

Spoiler alert because apparently the “spoiler” feature for Goodreads reviews doesn’t work??

This was really good up until the twist was that the sexual assault survivor was actually the insane villain the whole time.

Also don’t love that the insane villain vibe was really just an untreated mental illness that manifested as a murder-y evil person. Just seemed to further the stigma of less common mental illnesses.

I’m all set with that.

The last line was really good though. That’s about all I can say because the twist and its implications took out any other enjoyment I experienced beforehand.

This book was fine, enjoyable, until the final twist. Then, I was just mad. Not only cliche, but imo, harmful to add to the stigmatism and stereotypes.

The next thing I plan to do is see when this book is published (hopefully not too recently). Then, I plan to forget it entirely. Disappointed.

Had I known that the crux of this book was villanizing a sexual assault survivor with untreated mental illness, I never would have read it. Additionally, there's something unsettling about a white man writing about a black woman dealing with microaggressions (and acting as though the only racist thing that ever happened to her was a white girl not wanting to wear her jacket). The black woman becoming a cop and then, toward the end of the book, implying that people plan out "suicide by cop" as though police violence doesn't occur unless premeditated by the victim was the icing on top.

This book was honestly pretty good up until the last 15%, and I wish the story had ended differently, in a less tired/contrived way.

This story has it all. Family dysfunction...substance abuse...old secrets...betrayal... madness... and a missing husband. This is a debut novel by this talented author. I just finished his second book Bath Haus and immediately decided to search to see if he had any more. This one is so different than Bath Haus but it is every bit as entertaining and absorbing. We quickly realize that this family has secrets that are as rich as their estate and deeply buried with the hope they will never see the light of day. I never saw the ending coming. P.J. Vernon has produced a chilling...twisted, and dark thriller that is very hard to put down until the last page is turned.

Wow.

Sometimes I feel like I have read so many books that I can predict what will happen next. Usually, I am right. It's like a super power. But not a good one because it takes some of the fun out of the story I'm reading.

Not with this book. I was totally caught off guard with the final twist. I won't add any spoilers, but definitely worth a read.

When I read this book had southern gothic vibes and was about a super dysfunctional family I immediately put it on library hold. Oh boy was it good! If you’re looking for a suspensive, psychological thriller with a shocking twisty surprise, look no further. Pick this. I thought I had it figured out. Wrong. This is a chilling look at one seemingly perfect southern family—marriage, madness and of lives lived behind scandalous lies. A phenomenal five star debut novel! ❥

While I patiently wait for September when my credits renew, I decided to keep up with my newly-found Audible obsession by catching up on some books on my TBR list that I hadn't gotten around to reading yet, and this one had all the trappings of my favorite kind of read - missing husband, unreliable narrator with a spotty memory, numerous suspects and motives, etc., but it all went off the rails for me about the halfway point.

Gray Godfrey wakes up hungover on Christmas day with no memory of what happened the evening before, but she knows her husband is not in bed with her. When he does not show up and no one has seen him since the night before, she fears the worst. Gray knows she's an alcoholic and black outs are not a new phenomenon for her. But she also knows her husband has been hiding things, including an affair. When no one can find Paul, and she begins receiving messages from another woman about Paul, things start to spiral out of control. On top of that, she has a mother who is more concerned with the family image than the truth, and a sister who is just a bit too supportive in a passive aggressive way, she doesn't know who might have wanted Paul out of the picture enough to make him disappear permanently.

I will say that I didn't overly love the narrators in this one, and maybe that's why I never felt very invested in any of the characters. I didn't particularly care about any of them and found them all generally annoying; however, my biggest gripe is that there were so many great possibilities when it came to the "whodunnit" and it absolutely could have ended with an amazing finish - but it didn’t. It ended rather abruptly with the weakest, and in my opinion, the most unrealistic, overused trope in thrillers, and it ruined it for me. By the time the epilogue started, I knew exactly how it was going to end, as it's a classic "shocking moment" for this tired plot device.

Overall, a book that had loads of potential but just failed in its execution. 3 mediocre stars.

I read this book to fill the Psych square of my 2019 Halloween Bingo Card.

This summer, I attended a readers & writers conference and enjoyed a panel discussion at which this author was a member. He made sharp, funny comments and I immediately decided that I wanted to read his novel.

Mr. Vernon, you have a dark & twisty mind. I like. This is a domestic noir that gives books like The Girl on the Train a run for its money. Every now and then, I’d think that I had things figured out. How silly of me! He even gets one more jab in during the very last paragraph!

A very entertaining psychological thriller. Mr. Vernon, I hope there are more books coming because I will read them with pleasure.

Gray Godfrey and her husband, Paul, have returned to her hometown for the Christmas holiday. Meeting friends and family in a bar leads to trouble for both of them. Gray wakes up Christmas morning with a huge hangover and no memory of what happened the previous night. Paul never came to bed and isn't in the house. When Paul's rental car is found abandoned, Detective Nina Palmer starts asking questions. Why did Paul leave? Is he injured or dead? And why isn't Gray upset about his disappearance?

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Amy McFadden & Bahni Turpin. Both did a terrific job. But it didn't help the first 1/3 of the book which was alcoholic Gray justifying her drinking. I nearly gave up on the story at that point. Finally when Paul disappeared, the pace of the story picked up. We still had to put up with Gray guzzling everything in sight, but at least there was a story to go with it. I thought I had the mystery figured out, but there was a twist near the end of the book that I never saw coming. My rating: 3 Stars.

This is a harmful portrayal of mental illness. The author should be ashamed.

A first by Vernon, but it will not be my last. If all his books are this good, then consider me a fan!

It started off a little bit slow for me, but the pace picked up and almost immediately and I'm so glad it did. This one was full of twists and I'm proud to say that I devoured it in three sittings. Vernon has a certain style of writing where it's hard not to love. Twist after twist, secret after secret, just amazing!

Gray is such an unreliable character which is what makes her great. There are obvious reasons to her drinking and throughout the novel, we will discover secrets from her past. Not just about her, but about her entire family and let me tell you that they're not very pleasant.

The plot twist at the end was what really did it for me. I finished this book on the bus on my way home from school and I almost missed my stop because of how I was intrigued by it. It held its fast pace until the last page and that last line sent chills down my spine. This is how a psychological thriller is written and I'm so happy that I am introduced to the world of P.J Vernon.

If you're looking for a great psychological thriller, then stop looking and read this one because I can guarantee that it's one you'll want to talk about after!

Thank you Crooked Lane Books for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is a fun, twisty thriller involving a missing husband, a marriage full of problems, and old family secrets. Gray Godfrey, the protagonist, is a damaged woman with a severe drinking problem, who can't remember what happened the night her husband Paul disappeared. We also get first-person POV from Nina, the detective investigating Paul's disappearance, and Annie, a mysterious woman who is leaving voicemails for Gray that hint that she knows something about what's happened to Paul. I did enjoy reading this book, but I was also a bit let down by the end--I think a lot of people will love it, but it uses a plot device that I think is overused, and that I'm personally kind of done with.

This was an okay book, nothing very special, I did love that it actually said it's a common misconception that you have to wait 24 hours to report someone missing. BUT, and this is a huge one, cause it made me knock off one star; I am very disappointed that this book contributes to the misconception that Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a rare disorder, and that people who have it are psychopaths / criminals / murderers. The book did get it right about it often being caused by trauma, which is why it's so awful that this person turns out to be the villain of this book. They shouldn't be! Seriously, these media portrayals of DID and other mental illnesses need to stop.

If you are looking for a psychological thriller that is an absolute page turner, look no farther. When You Find Me has a vivid southern feel, a dilapidated mansion, a dysfunctional wealthy family with secrets, screwed up priorities, adultery, alcoholism, and murder!
I loved the alternating points of view and each character has a very distinct voice.
Highly recommended!

This was fantastic! The story was dark and twisty. I loved how atmospheric it was with the southern setting. The characters were all sorts of messed up and I loved unraveling everything. I liked the twists, although it wasn’t anything new. But I didn’t figure it out, so that’s good. I love his writing and I really hope he writes more.
