“Authentic and funny. Joel nails a rookie’s blunders and achievements on the trail with sled dogs” -Jeff King, four-time Iditarod champion
"Best wishes as you continue with your adventures." -Robert Redford
In the hilarious new travelogue by Joel Paul Reisig, the author has a heart attack and is dumped by the women he loves. He decides to move to Michigan's frozen Upper Peninsula where he lives with an old musher, a moron, and forty-seven sled dogs, races in the Midnight Run, and falls for a girl who conveniently has the same name as the girl he lost!
Living in a place where running sled dogs and mushing is a national pastime, I like books about sled dogs. A friend told me about this book, saying how funny and entertaining it was, along with being informative about learning to mush a dog team. Reisig is a natural born storyteller, and he mixes humor with serious stuff, which is hard to do. He pulls it off seamlessly and some of his descriptions are downright hilarious. I would have given it another star, but it needs serious editing. But if you don't care about that and you're in the mood for a funny, informative read, I recommend this book.
What a fun read! Thank you Joel Paul Reisig for learning how to mush and letting us learn vicariously. Your mistakes made me laugh out loud (you seemed to eat a lot of snow), and meeting some of the UP natives was an education in itself. Having visited Alaska half a dozen times, visited a few mushing villages, and watched the racing on dry land I can only appreciate all the learning you had to do and all the teasing you must have gone through from the pros. You gave us a great story, and I’m looking forward to your next journey!
Interesting and entertaining, but could have done with a good editor. There are way too many exclamation marks, probably meant to convey excitement or suspense or something, but it was just annoying. Also, the plot is a bit confusing. Other than that, it's a good book. it's funny and I especially liked the atmosphere it creates: the snowy woods and the harsh weather. And all the doggos, of course.
..I froze all the way with JPR...being a single-hand sailboater (but warm weather girl
girl ) I got the single-hand musher part and love of the dogs ...his constant upbeat take at whatever was thrown at him, from both dogs and trainer, will keep him young forever if not warm...another good just for fun read....thanx....
Found on FreeBooksy, this appeared to be a fun read.. But it was well better than that. I laughed and learned and laughed some more. Writer has a great style and it was wonderfully written, from beginning to end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not only was the author entertaining and outright funny, but I'm walking away from this book with quite a bit of mushing knowledge! I can't wait to read his other books!
I really love this author. Laugh out loud stories and learn a few things as you go.the characters are so well developed, you can almost touch them. I can't wait until his next book comes out.
The material was very interesting and the humor was terrific. I had tears of laughter running down my face. Heartwarming story of man and beast working as one.
Reisig did a great job of portraying what it is to be on the runners and how some times all you got to do is laugh, because the alternative is cold and hurts.
