“The Joker War” part four of six! Batman is at his most vulnerable following a massive dose of an experimental new Joker toxin. With the Dark Knight haunted by demons and visions, it’s up to Harley Quinn to protect him while he recovers-because Punchline is on her way!
Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.
Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.
I was shocked by how touching certain moments were in this issue - in a way, I think that's exactly what this plot needed. Well, that and a healthy dose of Harley getting another chance to duke it out.
Every couple of years I drift back into a arc of Batman and/or Superman. This time it is Batman and the Joker's War (and 3 Jokers as well). This is a really good series and well drawn also. It has captured my attention and I am looking forward to it's conclusion. The only tie-ins I am reading are the Detective issues and the lone Red Hood issue (because I collect that title).
I couldn't care less for the Harley/Punchline story but the Batman part in this one was great. More emotional, psychological, some depth that we had with King run, that's not present enough in Tynion's, is finally here in this one. The overall connection felt better too. Hit and miss with Tynion so far, let's hope in continue in the right way in the next one, because this one felt great!
Really enjoying the story. The art is fantastic, fight scenes very manga feeling. Love the addition of Punchline hope they keep her around with the Joker and don't try some ridiculous "saving" of the character. D.C. Needs some good female villains. Only complaint is Harley Quinn is just so out of place and Batman working with her feels wrong. Remove her from the story it would be prefect.
The art! The art!!! Bruce's face when Alfred shouts at him, and the moment Alfred holds his chin are absolutely breathtaking. The latest should be a print, it's one of the most beautiful moment between these two I've ever seen. It was heartbreaking yet so full of love and care. I love that this is what Bruce's mind came up with in its delirium, that loving and caring dad telling him he's doing alright by himself but he doesn't have to be alone. My heart 😭🥰
I also really liked the shout-out to the old logo, no matter how cheesy it is.
Punchline is still extra frustrating, she has all this untaped potential and is just there to insult Harley and act stupid when she seems to be anything but. Harley, on the other hand, is really well-written. As I suspected in previous reviews, Tynion is a way better author when he does his own stuff (Bruce and Harley fighting Punchline, Bruce coming to terms with Alfred's death) than when he's trying to redo other stories (the whole Joker's war, Punchline as Harley 2.0, future Batman, etc.). I hope he keeps this up, and that this arc is almost finished so we can read a story he's written 100% for himself instead of trying to pay a weird hommage to stuff we've read a million times.
Why aren't all Joker War issues this well-written?? This was so good. Punchline, Alfred, Harley, Batman and even Catwoman plus some of the other villains. Is it bad that I think Joker is the least interesting character in Joker War? He seems very one dimensional (again comic book noob xD) The art was pretty good, with a few amazing panels.
This had everything we've been looking for, in my opinion. It had heart, it had closure in the sense of moving on from the previous run on Batman. It had such a heart-wrenching beautiful seen with Alfred, and had Harley as a BAMF fighting Punchline!
Honestly I've been finding these pretty entertaining, and I don't usually read Batman books. I really like Jorge Jimenez's art, and the story's interesting enough to me.
Entertaining and interesting. I like how much Bruce relies on Alfred and struggles to let go of that relationship.
I wish Harley and Punchline could have talked about themselves and their vision of the world rather than make it all about their connection to the Joker. He should be a means to an end for them, misguided or not, they don’t have to be devout admirers. Why can’t writers let these characters flourish?
The art is impressive but I’m frustrated by how messy Bruce looks, Harley, Punchline, and Cat are veritable pinups in almost all the panels they appear in. Would we ever see the opposite?
