Mr. Pink
By: Patrick Hjerten
On sale: 10/6/20

Reading the synopsis for Mr. Pink I was intrigued. Described as action packed revenge story about a gay sociopath….I am all for it, gimme the book.

Mr. Pink is half Swedish and half English, sexy, sophisticated and planning brutal revenge on his former lover. He uses sex to manipulate people. He considers himself a player that uses his lovers in whatever way he deems necessary…until he meets Andreas. They find themselves in a tenuous yet passionate relationship. As the two men get to know one other and their feelings develop, Mr. Pink begins to reflect on his past choices and whether if he can accept the choices he made.

I went into this book with high expectations based on the synopsis. Unfortunately the story itself fell flat for me. The story jumped into the future frequently, many times without a segue which left me feeling confused. I think I was expecting more from the brutal revenge aspect, the revenge ultimately was more corporate sabotage than anything else, which left me wanting more. The romance portion of the book was a slow burn, very angsty and it frustrated me. You don’t really get the full backstory as to why Mr. Pink is seeking revenge until the last 20 or so pages of the book. In the end, you do realize that he had very good reasons for his actions and that he isn’t quite the devil you think he is.

This book was 3/5 stars for me. Thank you to @bookforwardpr for my copy of the book to review.

"Mr. Pink" has a little bit of everything -- it offers international revenge drama, romance, and a cryptic mystery wrapped into one. Mr. Pink is a fashion mogul that knows how to use his power and sexuality to manipulate others and, ultimately, to pursue justice for an old friend. Along the way, Mr. Pink finds a magnetic attraction to Swedish journalist Andreas, and they both must navigate the feelings they have for one another, through explosive ups and downs, and at times, spanning two continents. They ultimately must decide if they can make any type of relationship work with Mr. Pink's sinister plans in place.

Overall, what I appreciated most about "Mr. Pink" was the relationship and romance aspects of the book. Compared to other books I've read involving LGBTQ+ characters, the dating and love scenes were some of the most detailed and lifelike that I have read. I was most interested in reading about the ways in which Mr. Pink used his social clout, charisma, or power, to set things in motion on the path that he desires. While Mr. Pink did not always make decisions that I agreed with, his actions added layers to his character that made it more interesting to see what would happen next in his love life.

Unfortunately, the structure of the book in terms of the revenge plot fell a little flat for me. While the reader is able to see small snippets of steps that Mr. Pink is taking throughout the story to enact his plan, we not learn about the prior event that precipitated this elaborate scheme until the final couple of chapters. For me, not knowing his motivation and what he was fighting for left me more confused and frustrated about what was going on and whether or not he was justified in his actions. Despite this, the final couple of chapters do offer some satisfying reveals in terms of previous events we have witnessed and how they relate to where the mystery of what has been happening unfolds.

True rating: 2.5.

When I first saw the synopsis, I naturally thought Mr Pink would be an exhilarating read. Revenge quest? Sociopath? A little bit of romance? I thought, yes, sign me up! But, unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver to my expectations despite the fact that there was a lot of potential.

The revenge quest wasn’t as elaborate, intricate and suspenseful as I hoped it would be. A fine balance needed to be struck between romance and revenge. The writing contained far too many verbs and overly descriptive passages in parts that don’t really need to be described down to every little detail, and the romance is a slow-burn, yearning, pining and all that razzle dazzle which was particularly frustrating. However, and a big one at that, in the end, the romance plot was actually pretty freaking adorable, and I wanted more! Andreas is a moody and sensitive softie and, you know what, so is our resident “sociopath” Mr Pink, and once you finally learn more about Mr Pink’s backstory and what’s fuelled his desire for vengeance, you realise he is actually a softie on the inside too.

Overall, I can’t say Mr Pink was a favourite read, I often found myself exasperated. While it had a lot of potential and promise, the execution was pretty on the nose and clunky.

“The conversation sort of stopped naturally because of two men who in that moment were defined by fear and nothing else. The fear of opening up to the possibilities of who they really were and what they could become together. Instead of saying what they really wanted to say, they said things in riddles, and so said nothing.”

I want to thank Jennifer Vance, from Books Forward, for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I have spent a lot of time trying to type this review and even rewriting it a few times. This is a book that is a bit difficult to review.

Mr. Pink is a man on a mission and will do anything and use anyone to his advantage to achieve his goal. That is until he meets Andreas.

Falling for Andreas was not part of the plan, but he will not let them stop him from taking revenge on the man that hurt his friend.

Mr. Pink is half Swedish and half English and uses his looks. He attends parties to gather information. He is not above getting his hands dirty if the situation calls for it.

The premise of this was very intriguing. I remember reading this while at the bar, waiting for Chris Tucker to start. I ordered a drink and enjoyed the book.

The romance between the two was good but what really shocked me was the climax, when the reader discovers the events that happened that caused Mr. Pink to go the revenge path.

Reading this had me on the edge of my seat but at the same time something felt lackluster, like something was missing.

I would absolutely recommend this.

"Mr. Pink" is about a very wealthy, attractive, intelligent businessman with an eye for the hottest men in town. When he meets Andreas at the home of his lover Thomas he can't get him out of his head but he finds him very hard to read, unlike his other lovers. Traveling across the pond to pursue him only to realize that his revenge plans could completely derail the budding love that they feel for each other. Will this new love survive the complicated revenge that Mr. Pink has skillfully put into play that will destroy several lives while providing redemption for one?

Mr. Pink is an interesting read about relationships, the length a person with unlimited money can go to destroy his enemies, and explicit sex between two men. I don't often read male/male books but I found the book blurb interesting and decided to read it. I was a bit confused about why he was setting up this revenge and how it would play out, but when it came to light as to the reason why and how it ended I thought it was a good book.

I liked this book. In regards to it fitting in the LGBTQ genre it is a nice addition. Although, it is on the mild side of "romance" or "sexual encounters". Which in the beginning there were some scenes that were "hot". Yet, with the book being this way, it makes it so that everyone; no matter their sexual orientation can enjoy reading this book.

However, I must admit that I did want more "meat" to the story. What I mean is that it read kind of like. I was expecting more intrigue and backstabbing moments from Mr. Pink. He did not get to be the boss that he was without stepping on some people. So, I figured he would be a bit more in your face with his "revenge". Instead it was more subtle. While, I may not have loved this book, I still did find it enjoyable and would read another one from this author.

This one sounded promising but it kind of hit the mark. I felt like the writing was a bit clunky and it would cut to the future with little to no explanation and I found myself confused on multiple occasions. I kept reading because there were so many hints of something big to come and I just had to know what it was.
