This book is made up of a mixture of tales from different characters view, that piece together and crossover to set the story. The Rain is something of a surprising read, which gets you more involved as you go on and get to recognize the main characters of the story and how they end up interacting – whether that be in a good or bad manner.

Doctor Zhirkov and his new assistant research doctor protégé are working in a research institution, which more resembles a prison with actual cells and ‘patients’ within, than an actual lab. Doctor Zhirkov has supposedly forgotten what he invented and is looking for his new protégé to figure out what’s been created. Why is the Rain affecting some people with an altered DNA sequence but not others?

Some of the characters you will like or feel sorry for, but some of the main characters are just pure evil and dark! There are numerous female guards searching the city for these ‘special’ people and guarding the ‘patients’. All are terrified of Dr Z and his main enforcer, Darkmore.

Although a slow start as you try to piece together all the different bits of stories, you will manage to see connections between them all and find the common thread. This is a full length book in the Government Rain series. It was great to see where the characters in the short stories all fitted together. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

"As the abomination crawls it consumes."
Welcome to New Hampton, an apparently ordinary small town if the incredibly high rainfall is discounted. Apart, that is, from the strange things that are happening to some of it's citizens, the bizarre characters that creep in the shadows, the experiments conducted in the windowless concrete block which is a converted part of the one time prison. No, best stay away from New Hampton, as anyone who has already read the short stories will know.

A first encounter with Rain can be a little confusing, but stick with it: gloriously graphic mental pictures are formed, mostly in blacks and greys, but with occasional flashes of colour. And the falling acid rain changes some people in unexpected ways. There is a creepy feeling to this ongoing tale which transcends that of most horror storues as it moves between the points of view of several of those unfortunate inhabitants.

This is a bizarre book which draws in the reader, with little vignettes to tantalise the immagination. Very original and highly recommended. However, try to ignore the all to frequent, and strange, incorrect punctuation and the usuage of the word lay (as in lay an egg) instead of lie (to lie down).
Small points but very irritating which cost the book one star from an otherwise five star rating.

The first full-length novel in the Mutant Rain series by L.A. Frederick, The Rain, is a robust and intriguing mix of mystery, horror, and urban dystopia. A more substantial, and far longer tale than the series kickoff, The Last Doctor, it places the reader smack dab in the middle of the confusion that are the lives and times of the residents of the doomed town of New Hampton.

In this entry, readers are introduced to the major players that will continue the series and learn more about the mysterious and creepy Dr. Zhirkov and this manufactured “government” rain that appears to be behind all the weirdness. New Hampton is on the brink of collapse, and while the regular residents of the area go about clueless to what is about to happen, there are some with special abilities that are beginning to see what’s going on.

This series, although titled “Mysteries,” touches a broad range of reading interests (mystery, urban mystery, mutants, horror, sci-fi, dystopian, urban horror). There is something for almost everyone.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader copy of this book.

It never rains in New Hampton, it pours. And with the rain comes danger.Someone has been playing god, meddling with things best left untouched, and the results were astounding. As the city weathers the storm complications come to light, strange happenings occur with seemingly normal people. Crime is affluent and those willing to stand up for what is right are few and far between. Until now.

The Rain is written in the present tense, whilst not one of my preferred perspectives it doesn't detract from the story. Each chapter focuses on specific characters and the changes occurring in their life. The author writes this genre well and pulls the reader into the tale which has no shortage of interesting characters and strange happenings. The Rain touches on several categories from including mystery, paranormal, and horror. It makes for an interesting read.

It took me a while to get into the book, but once I grasped the storyline, I was hooked. A brilliant new apocalyptic series. And for all those fans of zombies, this is just the book for you. It sort of reminded me of a dark, gothic Batman type superhero book.

It seems that the power that be were experimenting and adding something to the rain, but not everyone was affected. The people who were affected by this chemical rain changed into a different type of being. They were rounded up and used as labrats. But it seems that something went wrong and zombie type beings were the result.

Why? I'm not really sure, but I think it will be explained in the next installments.

Gripping, brutal, terrifying and highly recommended to apocalypse fans.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC to read and review.

This was immensely enjoyable. A refreshing, original storyline with incredibly colourful characters and a fast pace that leaves you craving more.
A nice twist on the human experimentation/government corruption story, this has some fascinating mutants - both positive and negative, that will please fans of Marvel Comics and Series, and also some incredibly violent individuals that can literally tear you apart.
I was trying to ascertain the setting for this story, as it appears to be a hybrid of both England and America - A lot of English slang / expletives but with American areas. Either way it works really well.
I'd read 'The Last Doctor' and 'The Lost Boy' previously and so was very happy to obtain this full length book. The teaser chapter for the next book now has me eagerly awaiting more.

For me, this one started weird and took some time to adjust to the writing style. Given the genre, some level of ambiguity is expected. Enough of it builds tension and creates the desire for the reader to continue on. The opening of this felt too ambiguous.

Once beyond that, however, and into the main story, the curtain raised.

Deadly experiments by the government (who else?) to study a very special group of people bring a very unlikely cast together to uncover the truth of the rain before it’s too late.

Rain is told through alternating point of views, both good and bad. It felt more like a rounded story, being able to see Doctor Zhirkov’s side of the ordeal; it made him feel more like a character and less of a plot device. We got to see him face off against Evaline the reporter and Reinhardt the vigilante firsthand. It allowed for the reader to gather information without lots of monologuing or following the same character from start to finish. Perspective switches were smooth as well. They gave adequate indication of the person, setting, and time, much in the way Stephen King separates his chapters.

All of the characters were connected, a detail the author paid close attention to. Details didn’t really feel muddled between them. The reasons behind their individual story lines were emotional and provided good character motivation.

There’s editing needed. There are some elements of backstory (like how Evaline began her research project into this mysterious underbelly) that were either left out, or not explained very well. Remember when I said there was a lot of ambiguity? Things do clear up the farther into the story the reader gets, but there’s still some small, fine details like that for continuity’s sake that were missing.

This was still a very interesting novel. Quite a bit of imagination and creativity went into not just the experiments, but the mutations as well. Reading a sequel would definitely not be out of the equation for me.

I feel like I haven't finished this book. L.A. Frederick certainly knows how to leave a reader in suspense. The Rain: The Government Rain Mysteries is fast-paced--a little confusing at first as it moves from character to character. I finally sorted them all out. I look forward to the next book so I can find out what's happened in the chaotic dark world of New Hampton, the outer reaches, and the people. It's a great story!

A confusing dystopian SciFi Horror Story

The concept was interesting, but I had a difficult time following the characters and events. It is obvious that the author never used an editor because there were many words used that weren't even in the dictionary, words used incorrectly, and words frequently missing that made the sentence difficult to understand. It was so bad that it interfered with my enjoyment of the book.
