The title of this book doesn't quite accurately reflect what's in it. I would call it more of a book that helps you write a better novel—or at least gives you concepts to consider when you write on—rather than specifically being about writing page-turning fiction. To me, the latter is very specific. This is more like a collection of essays on different novel-writing topics, like your purpose in writing the novel (which I don't think is as important as the author does) and the transformation that must take place within your book so that it feels satisfying to the reader. I appreciated that the author specifically stated in the introduction that what she writes in the book is not writing gospel, so to speak, to be used by every author in the same way. Rather, it is just one author and writing instructor’s view of things to consider when writing fiction. Too many authors do not admit such! Back to the book proper. I particularly liked the areas where she talked about the judicious use of telling vs. showing. If you’ve read anything about writing, you've heard about that topic, but the author gives a far more nuanced look at it. You can tell the author has walked the talk, not only with her own books but as a creative writing teacher. If you write fiction or would like to, this book will certainly give you many things to consider as you write and edit your novel.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
