The first herald of evil is silence. Tam is at the bottom of a twenty-year skid. Once a renowned warrior, he now spends his days deep in his cups, trying to avoid sobriety and the memories it brings. But fate has other plans for Tam than a slow, drunken death. He stumbles into a mission to escort the baron’s dimwitted son, Gitt, to the academy in Thesslan. The journey offers an escape from the rut that is Tam’s life—and the failures that haunt him. But in his attempt to run away from his past, he winds up running headlong into it. And, in the process, stumbles upon an existential threat to the kingdom.
Kevin Sutherland’s book “Wellspring” comes at such a wonderful time when we most need to escape the craziness of our present world into one of fantasy and adventure. Right from the beginning he pulls you into this world of two moons with descriptive prose pungent with smells, painted with the darkest of emotions and sensations. Through the course of the story you meet the characters, each unique and challenging to love, but by the end of the tale you will find yourself quite fond of many and the divide between good and evil becomes stark and wide. Unlikely friendships, interesting dialogue and detailed descriptions make for a truly enjoyable read. Thanks to merely allusions to violence and dicey language, I look forward to passing it down to my young teen daughter. I am also grateful for a few new additions to my vocabulary. Thank you Kevin, for creating a wonderful new adventure story that family and friends can share. I am looking forward to the next installments!
With his debut fantasy novel, Kevin Sutherland created memorable characters to take the reader on a sensational journey through the Kingdom of Andur. Tam, a grizzled warrior, must take a simple, yet thoughtful and curious, lordling to Thesslan Academy. Along the way, they make new friends, reconnect with old acquaintances, and find the real reason for the atrocities plaguing the kingdom. The author made it easy to root for the ragtag bunch.
The author brought to life the disparate regions of Andur with vivid scene descriptions and unique characters. Tam’s journey is fraught with enough twists and turns to make one of my favorite characters, Lorretra, invent a new invective at each new conflict. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
Loved this. It's really nice to read a fantasy book with mature characters, good female representation and full of adventure, humor, and emotional beats. I hope the next book comes out soon. Reminds me a bit of Michael J Sullivan's Riyria series, (which is a great compliment.).
Hey, I'm a sword and sorcery/fantasy reader from many moons ago and I thought that it was great. I especially like any book to have a touch of humor. Looking forward to the next book
Wellspring was a really refreshing fantasy adventure. It’s full of witty wordplay, funny dialogue and songs, reminiscent of Monty Python or the Princess Bride. I appreciated that there were multiple female characters that were interesting integral characters, not merely love interests or victims. Gitt’s storyline spoke to me as a special needs parent. My secret wish is that my daughter’s quirks will mature into great strengths, so that she too can save the world.

This was recommended by a friend as fantasy is not my usual choice. I was not disappointed. Magic, an important jouney, add in trolls, and a good v. evil battle, this has the everything a reader needs. From beginning to end along the quest to get Git to his destination, the author has the ability to portray the tedium of travel, breaking it up with exciting moments of action, and unexpected humor. I was entertained throughout and became invested in Tam's success and admired Lorretra's snark and survival skills. I'm very much looking forward to reading more from this author.
Not normally a reader of fantasy novels I found this book to be well written and immediately took a liking to all the characters. I would highly recommend this to any reader looking for something different to delve into. Anxiously awaiting Book 2.
Want more! The main characters are rich in their interactions with each other and the story line holds your attention. Couldn't put it down, will recommend to all my fantasy loving friends.
This book has all the essential components of a good fantasy novel — complicated hero, intriguing plot, a quest, and murderous villains — along with a liberal sprinkling of humor and creative expletives. I devoured this book (twice), laughing many times along the way. It was an interesting and entertaining read. I look forward to the next installment.
