Fast paced and thrilling. I read other reviews and they stated it was a bit daunting or ending was predictable, however, to me I truly enjoyed this book and didn't see the ending coming. I liked the author's writing style. I also enjoyed how relatable the characters were. This story kept me on the dge of my seat. Truly enjoyable and thrilling til the very end!

This ARC was given to me by NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All statements above are my true opinion after reading this book fully.

Kate lost her daughter 6 months ago, she was murdered and they have not caught the killer yet when Kate starts receiving e-mails from... "her daughter"?

I saw one review that read that they didn't enjoy this novel because the ending was "predicable". I must be an idiot then, because I did not see the big reveal coming at all.

I thought this book was a nice little jaunt into a world of mystery, suspense and murder. The characters were likable and relatable, especially Kate's terrible taste in men! I love the fact that this book didn't take place in the U.S. and it required some cultural research on my part.. it was fun to read words like nappy, telly and sod. (The glossary in the back, helped!)

The flow of this book leaves a little to be desired, there were pieces that could have been left out and other parts I wish would have been expanded on.

All in all... fast paced, fun, and relatable. I dig it!

From what I am understanding this is quite an old book. It was first published as Goodnight, My Angel back in 1997, then it got a new title in 2020 and now I am listening to the audiobook that is due out on May 10, 2022. Was any of the story changed or just the title?

6 months after Kate Pearson had to live her worst nightmare and identify the body of her 12 year old daughter, Melanie, she starts getting messages that make it seem they are from Melanie.

Kate seeks out the help of Adam, her co-worker and a genius on the computer.
There are some flashbacks of an abusive husband, David, that make him a suspect.

There were some suspenseful moments that kept me engaged and wanting to get to the end quickly. Unfortunately, the ending was a bit of a let down to be honest.

Gail Shalan did a pretty good job narrating and giving emotion when necessary.

*Thanks to Dreamscape Media LLC, the author and NetGalley for the advance audiobook. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*

A mother who lost her child several months back begins receiving harassing messages. The worst part is they're claiming to be her dead child. Who would do such a thing to a grieving mother? Is it the murderer or a sick joke?

This book makes us ask ourselves what we would do and how far we would go to unmask the person who took our loved one.

The premise is pretty simple and could have been wildly interesting but it got watered down and tended to drag on.

The narration wasn't bad but it did feel like she was whispering at times and not terribly emotive, given the situation.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.

“Dear Mum”by Margaret Murphy is an example of a good story concept not-so-well executed. It began very promisingly, and kept up the tempo well. All of a sudden, it seemed to have literally lost the plot. That’s the point the reader begins to feel confused. Events that have nothing to do with the story at that point are covered over 30 pages. After that, the story never really picks up. The villain is obvious early on, yet the writer drags on before providing us with the answer we already knew.

This book was released several years ago under a different title and I’m not sure if anything other than the title was changed. I listened to the audiobook of it and it was kind of choppy and some parts needed expansion and some could have been left out.
Kate’s daughter was taken murdered 6 months ago. They haven’t caught the killer. Then one day she starts getting emails from what seems to be her daughter saying “why did you let him hurt me mummy?” Kate tries to get her friend Adam, an IT whiz to figure out who sent the email, thinking that they will turn out to be the killer. However, she makes a lot of dumb choices that could have had better outcomes if she had been smarter. There are some flashbacks to her previous relationship that was abusive, which could be a trigger for some.
Overall this was an average read. Nothing spectacular or wow moments. The narrator did a good job though.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for this audiobook arc in exchange for my review.

*Audiobook Netgalley

Well….I loved the tone and pacing of the audio narrator for this one.

However, there was just too much going on in this one and I couldn’t keep up.

The characters were not memorable or well defined so that I could keep who was who sorted. So that was a little frustrating. The mother was easy to empathize with but overall I just don’t think this one was for me.

The premise sounded cool but I almost didn’t finish it….I would think it was interesting and then zone out. Then the story would grab my attention again and lose me again.

So I can’t really say I recommend this one…or perhaps maybe just not as an audiobook. It might be easier to keep all of the characters straight if I read it instead of listening to it. Maybe the audio narrator was TOO soothing. I loved her voice and attn to dramatization where it fit.

Wish I wasn’t so conflicted but here I am.

NetGalley Audio ARC.

Though I did like this one more than Before He Kills Again, it's still not the greatest book. Maybe a little less than 3 stars. I guess this author is just not for me.

I have conflicted feelings about Dear Mum's audiobook. Gail Shalan's narration is well-paced, flows well, and her voice is very soothing. I absolutely adored most of her narration, but I lost engagement when she changed to either a child or male POV. I don't mean to criticize, as I couldn't have done it better myself; it just didn't work for me.

I feel the same way about the story itself - it was strong and claustrophobic. Kare is a compelling, relatable and believable character, but the plot lost steam in the third act, and the climax was weaker than the road leading to it.

I never request an ARC or pick up a book I feel I won't like, and I feel bad when I don't. But I have to be honest. With that said, I suggest you pick it up if the plot interests you; it may jive better with you.

Disclaimer: In exchange for an honest review, I am thankful to the publishers and NetGalley for providing a copy of Dear Mum.

ARC audiobook provided by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

“Dear Mum” introduces us to Kate, who is still reeling from the unsolved brutal murder of her daughter, Melanie, six months prior. One day, Kate begins to receive creepy messages that are drafted to appear to be from Melanie. Kate enters a tailspin of emotions as the messages continue and it appears that they are coming from the murderer. Kate seeks the help of the police, but they just chase apparent leads that go nowhere. Not being able to take it any longer, Kate decides to take things into her own hands and hunt down the killer.

This book had real promise. Although the big event, Melanie’s murder, was in the past, there was so much that could have been done with the current storyline and past events. Unfortunately, the book fell flat. The first half of the book is very slow and really just feels like a repetition of the same type of event over and over. Characters are introduced that end up really having no bearing on the storyline. The story just drags on.

Just past midway, the story picks up a bit and seems to finally be gathering steam. Plot devices are introduced and interesting character histories revealed! However, these also end up going nowhere. It feels as though the author was throwing things out there to beef up the story without giving any thought of how to integrate them into the actual storyline. Despite this, I pushed through with the hope that the story would wrap up well. It didn’t. The ending felt uninspired and, frankly, boring.

I must note that I had the audiobook version of this book. The narrator did a pretty good job, although some of her male voices were a bit weak. This is just a point that I tend to be picky about when it comes to female narrators. The narrator did a respectable job to the extent that the weaker voices didn’t pull me out of the story while listening, so I consider that a plus.

Overall, this book was an unfortunate disappointment. The premise had the potential to be really interesting, suspenseful and original. In actuality, the book ended up lacking all of those things. I would love to see this book premise rewritten, possibly by a different author, as I believe it really could be great. As it stands, I must say that I regrettably do not recommend this book.

This is an extremely dark book. I didn’t read a thing about it other than that it was a thriller before diving in so I had no idea where this book was going to go. I’ll tell you a tiny bit about it but going in blindly or nearly so was a fantastic way to go.
Kate’s twelve year old daughter Melanie disappeared six months ago. Six months ago her body was found battered and lifeless. Kate is working on coming to terms with the murder when a message pops up on her comptuer screen. The message reads “ WHY DID You LET HIM HURT ME MUMMY?”. Many more messages follow, and the only person who could possibly be sending them is Melanie’s killer.
The investigation, led by Chief Inspector Harmon, focuses on Kate’s abusive ex-husband David and a colleague of hers, Adam Shepherd, the wiz-kid computer guy. Kate decides to fight and unmask the killer that took everything from her and not become another of his victims.
This is a well written story that keeps you on your toes guessing the whole time. You may figure it out and you may not but either way you’ll find it hard to put down.
You can get this book in audio form as well. It’s done extremely well and makes the story even that much creepier. Either way, it’s a good dark thriller.

My Rating: ⭐⭐.3

Story starts with Kate gets a text message “Why did you let him hurt me?
Message is from her twelve-year old daughter Melanie who was brutally murdered six months ago.

So yes story starts off with getting my attention.
I love a good audiobook but am a big snob when it comes to narrators.
Narrator Gail Shalan does a good job in performing the characters but her voice is so soothing it would be great for anyone who has difficulty sleeping. I had a difficult time staying focused ~ as it was so slow.
I hung in there ~ when I found out whodunit; I almost threw my e-reader across the room.

Want to thank NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this audio eGalley. This file has been made available to me before publication in an early form for an honest professional review. Publishing Release Date scheduled for May 10, 2022.

(Hoopla) 3.5 stars.

This mystery tied my little brain in knots as I tried to figure it out before the reveal, and I failed. I was doing all kinds of calculations, too. I suspected everyone, even the cops! Sure, the killer referred to himself with male pronouns, but maybe one of the women has gender identity issues and that's part of what drives them. I was dizzy with really remote possibilities that I'd have been angry with if they were true, so I'm glad they weren't. I got a little bored in the beginning and almost quit (I've quit four books this week so I think I was just not in the mood for anything) but I resumed and didn't regret it. There are interesting elements that could make for decent book discussion, like women who end up on a cycle of different abusive relationships, or the friendships, or the cops. I think I'll go find another book by this author.

Subtle and sly

Margaret Murphy takes you into a world that could be yours, then slowly moulds it into a world that you don't want to acknowledge exists. Characters are built slowly, strengths, foibles and personality layered till they become real. You are invited to believe they are all guilty and one by one they are discarded, even the truly guilty. The forays into the cyber world are brought forward in different ways so that even those of us who are technophobes understand what is going on.
With masterful strategies, rounded characters and plot twists turns and backward views, you are sucked into a world akin to those of Faith Martin.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I love a good suspense, but I didn't feel like it was a suspense. You're thrown in at the place of six months ago Katie's daughter was murdered and there isn't an answer to who has done it. Katie is receiving off the wall messages that disappear after some time. It seems like she has distanced herself from her friends and but up a wall, which I don't blame her. And she has taken the investigation a little bit in her own hands to find the killer.

I can't say I loved the book, I felt like it was meh.

Honestly, this one fell flat for me. I loved the narrator and her accent it made the book for me. However, I wouldn’t consider this a psychological thriller as the only thing psychological about it was that the killer was messing with Kate’s head. It’s not your typical psychological thriller that has an unreliable narrator. The ending was what fell flat for me. When the killer is revealed it seemed anticlimactic and I question how the killer was related to Kate again

Moms’ worst fears

I read this book over two evenings - it’s hard to stop when you’re so caught up in the story!
I’m not British, so it’s always a bit difficult to work through the language use (I’m getting better).
Such a strong character the main character is! Moms know what can happen to their kids. We worry every second of every day. Could you be as strong and resilient as Kate?
Get the book and find out.

Loved the glossary of slang at the end

Enjoyable escapism would recommend highly. It's my first burst of Margaret Murphy. Some of the turn of phrase and prose was both jarring and heartening simultaneously. As in "set her cap to...." And then referring to slappers and slags. Would probably read more stand alone Margaret Murphies.

Wow. This was *bad*. Total DNF because apparently Murphy thinks 2D characters and a shit ton of exposition is the ONLY way to go. I feel like this could have been such a good mystery but right from the start you get a mustache-twirling villain and characters that are basically over-described caricatures. No thanks.

I never not finish a book, I just wanted to give it a go, but I so wanted to just stop with this one. But I got to the end. I’m sorry but this is the lowest rate I have ever given a book. It was just so long and the descriptive writing drove me crazy, everything was described to as much as it possibly could be and wasn’t needed. The story wasn’t great either. I’m sorry I didn’t enjoy it one bit.

This is a twisty tale and someone is either trying to make Kate go mad or she is already there. Kate is receiving emails and messages from her daughter who went missing and then turned up murdered and now Kate is being stalked and attacked. This story takes us around and around before we finally find out who the culprit is.

I love this author so I already knew before starting the audiobook, that I would enjoy this book. The narrator was incredible. All the different characters each had a unique voice. It was terrific.

The story is about a mother who is being terrorized after losing her daughter. Because I did listen to the I had trouble following some of the twists but it was still terrific.

Wow! This book grabbed me right from the beginning and kept me right until the end! This had some good twists and turns and I love the fact that Kate decided she wasn't just going to sit around and wait to see what the killer was going to do. She went after him and took care of business! This was my 1st book by Margaret Murphy but will certainly not be my last!

Hard to a follow; Didn’t Hold my interest

I almost stopped reading this book several times, but I wanted to know if I was right about who the killer was, so I pressed on. (I was right.) The characters are not very likeable, the plot is uneven, and the ending was abrupt.

I became immediately engaged in this book, but much to my disappointment, that engagement was short-lived. I found it difficult to continue with after just a couple of chapters. The story-line had the potential to be quite suspenseful but fell way short of the bar set by the book's beginning.

While I did not entirely love the writing style of this book, I did enjoy the story. The characters were interesting and the majority of the plot was quite clever. There were a few spots that confused me, I'm not sure if that's because I was listening to the audiobook or not. Overall, it was enjoyable.
