In a small village in Kerala, people begin to feel threatened by an invisible rooster that crows at odd hours. It is heard interrupting the morning and night prayers at the temple, the mass at the church, the azaan at the mosque and the martyrs’ day ceremony. When it hoots in the middle of the national anthem being sung at the local school, it is instantly labelled as a threat to national security. It offends the sentiments of all those who are religious, political, patriarchal, exploitative, fanatical and homophobic. Naturally, there are many baying for its blood. The witch-hunt that ensues fuels suspicions that the invisible cock might even be a human; an anarchist who is trying to destabilize the nation with help from outside.

Incisive and hilarious by turns, The Cock is the Culprit does an astute job of exposing the dark underbelly of Kerala society.

In the mind of a skilled storyteller, even the darkest times can be sculpted into parables or fables that give people a priceless commodity : hope. Over the course of history, authority has tried to burn, stamp out, kill, maim, imprison and torture a lot of these storytellers but their ilk is stubborn and like the hardiest of seeds they take root over and over again. To an observer, India seems to be going through a dark time now. The political party in power is pretty much omnipotent and opposition is scattered and weakened. As would happen in such a scenario, the party in power drives forth their own agenda which is met with criticism and derision among a portion of the population. Unni’s Prathi Poovankozhi (Translates into : The accused, a rooster) is a dark satirical take on a question of what if you imagine a totalitarian regime tries to spread its tentacles to smaller towns and cities in India.

Taking place in a quiet little village in Kerala, the story centers around a character Kochukuttan who while jobless is pretty much a quiet guy and also helpful and supportive to the others in the village. The story begins when one fine day he sees police men arriving at the doorstep of a neighbour who is a very old woman (and hard of hearing too !). Why did the police come searching for this harmless old woman and what further awaits the village is a question that Unni tries to answer. This is a novella and during the course of which Unni launches barbs at things like jingoism, false pretentions to nationalistic pride, the mob mentality in dispensing justice and how a ridiculous rumour can become truth if it is told enough times in repetition. The story is short and yet hits all the right spots with the right amount of force !

This story will help you connect a lot of dots and understand who or what is being referred to if you have been an Indian citizen who is in touch with what comes out through mainstream media. As I wrote at the start of the review, it is a reflection of the times we live in now. A movie based on this story is in development now (in Malayalam of course) and it would be interesting to watch out for as this is a visual story and also has a lot of material to be called black comedy.

തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തും എഴുത്തുകാരനുമായ ഉണ്ണി. ആർ ൻ്റെ കഥകൾ പലതും പുസ്തകരൂപത്തിൽ ഇറങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹം സംഭാഷണമെഴുതിയതും തിരക്കഥ രചിച്ചതുമായ പല സിനിമകളും കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഞാനാദ്യമായാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ഒരു പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നത്. ഉണ്ണി. ആർ എഴുതിയ ഏകനോവലാണിത്. പുസ്തകത്തിൻ്റെ അതേ പേരിലുള്ള സിനിമ ഇറങ്ങിയതുകൊണ്ട് ആ സിനിമയുടെയും ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലെയും കഥ ഒന്നായിരിക്കുമെന്നൊരു മുൻധാരണയാൽ ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാതെയിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. കുറച്ചുകാലമായി ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വായിക്കണമെന്നത്. എൻ്റെ ഒരു സുഹൃത്ത് എഴുതിയ വായനാക്കുറിപ്പ് വായിച്ചതിൽ നിന്നാണ് സിനിമയല്ല ഈ നോവലെന്നും ആ സിനിമയിൽ നിന്നും തീർത്തും വിഭിന്നമായൊരു കഥയാണെന്നും മനസ്സിലായതും പിന്നീട് ഈ പുസ്തകം വാങ്ങി വായിച്ചതും.

ഉണ്ണി.ആർ ൻ്റേതായി എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ട പ്രത്യേകത അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ എഴുത്ത് തന്നെയാണ്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ സിനിമകളിലുള്ള ആ ഒരു വ്യത്യസ്തത കഥകൾക്കുമുണ്ട്. ഒരേ സമയം ചിരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യരൂപേണ എന്നാൽ തീർത്തും ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യമല്ലാതെ കഥയായി തന്നെയാണ് നോവൽ പുരോഗമിക്കുന്നത്. 85 പേജുകളിലായി എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്ന വളരെ ചെറിയൊരു നോവലായിരിക്കെത്തന്നെ അന്ധവിശ്വാസങ്ങളെയും അനാചാരങ്ങളെയും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യലംഘനത്തെയും തുറന്നുകാണിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് പുസ്തകത്തിൽ.

പേരുപോലെ തന്നെ ഇവിടത്തെ പ്രശ്നം ഒരു പൂവൻകോഴിയാണ്. ആ പൂവൻകോഴിയുടെ കൂവൽ കാരണം പല ആളുകൾക്കും പല പ്രായസങ്ങൾ നേരിടേണ്ടിവരികയാണ്. അസാധാരണമായ ആ കൂവലിലൂടെ തൊണ്ണൂറുവയസ്സ് കഴിഞ്ഞ നാണിയമ്മയുടെ കോഴി മുതൽ സ്ഥലത്തെ എല്ലാ പൂവൻകോഴികളും സംശയിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ഉന്മൂലനം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുകയുമാണ് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത്. വീണ്ടും കൂവൽ തുടരുകയും തന്മൂലം ആ സംശയം മനുഷ്യരിലേക്കും നീളുകയും സംശയാസ്പദമായി ഒരാൾ പ്രതിചേർക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. കൂവലിൻ്റെ യഥാർത്ഥകാരണം കണ്ടുപിടിക്കുമോ എന്നുള്ള ആകാംക്ഷ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്ന ഓരോരുത്തരിലും ഉണ്ടാവുകയും വളരെ വേഗം തന്നെ നമുക്ക് വായിച്ചുതീർക്കാനും സാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. വളരെ ലളിതമായൊരു കഥയായിരിക്കെത്തന്നെ വരികളിലൂടെ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ പറഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന ആശയങ്ങൾ കാലികപ്രസക്തമായവയാണ്. തീർച്ചയായും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലൊന്ന് തന്നെയാണ് "പ്രതി പൂവൻകോഴി".

Unni R's attempt to satirically depict the growth of firebrand nationalism in India. Following his signature style that mixes rustic humour with the clever play of words, Unni presents an unseen trouble-maker rooster who disturbs peace and sanctity of a nameless village by crowing at odd hours.

The novel is consistently funny and sporadically brilliant in its dissection of jingoism as an inherently absurd affair.

നാഷണലിസം, മനുഷ്യന്റെ psyche, terrorism, സാമൂഹ്യ മാധ്യമങ്ങളിലൂടെയുള്ള ഫേക്ക് ന്യൂസ്‌ ഇന്ടെ പ്രചരണം എല്ലാം ഒളിഞ്ഞും തെളിഞ്ഞും പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

പക്ഷെ പെട്ടന്ന് തന്നെ പഴകിപ്പോയി എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു. ഒരു വർഷം മുന്നേ വായിച്ചിരുന്നു എങ്കിൽ കൂടുതൽ നന്നായി തോന്നിയേനെ. ഇപ്പോൾ പക്ഷെ ഒരു സാഹിത്യ കൃതി വായിക്കാതെ തന്നെ ഇതൊക്കെയാണ് ഇവിടെ നടക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് ഏതു കൊച്ചു കുട്ടിക്കും അറിയാമല്ലോ....

Unni R has come out with his first Malayalam novel and it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to those who are familiar with his style of writing that it abounds in satire and absurdity. From the title itself, to the plot and premise, it catches your attention and raises too many questions just out of sheer curiosity before even starting reading. And if you’ve experienced his brilliance on screen with his short films such as Kullante Bharya or Bridge then you wont be disappointed with this one. Personally I am a huge fan of those two shorts and I would not say that from a narrative angle this novel is better than them, but it is on a league of it’s own.

For starters, as I’ve mentioned before it is a satire, comically written, depicting the slow loss of reasoning and the casual abandonment of logic by the people in a town. When the crowing of a cock distracts and foils the prayer meeting for fallen soldiers held by Chaakku, he decides to take official action against the said cock which belongs to a senile old lady, and files a complaint to the police station stating that the cock is a threat to national security and that it disrespected the martyred soldiers of the nation. From here on out we can observe an exponential decay in loss of common sense in the townspeople and an exponential increase in the number of supporters for Chaakku against this criminal animal. Amidst all this chaos, there is one character who retains his sensibility and asks the most rational of questions, Kochutten – a young man with a lot of revolution in his blood. The so called ‘heinous’ actions of the cock unites the town irrespective of caste and religion and they band together to protect their town. (This novel is so heavy with irony)

The satire and comic tone in the first half of the novel takes a shift towards a somber atmosphere as the atrocious crowing of the cock becomes more and more problematic. The people come to ‘realize’ that it is an issue of national security and also one which could threaten their way of life in this town. We readers have the same thought process as Kochutten who is anchored on his rational thoughts and shares our same feelings – “It’s a cock, it will crow when it feels like, right?

The feeling of freedom being curbed by the norms of the society, by its numerous rules and beliefs, restricting thoughts, trying to beat one down, to obey the rules and to believe the beliefs; this is something familiar in the modern day. And funnily, ignorance has been the choice for this feeling. However, Unni R decides to shed light onto this phenomenon in a subtle and satirical manner, without hurting, yet leaving the mark.

How else can we explain the inauspicious events happening around when a cock crows? Or is it the act of some miscreants. No, it isn't within the norms of our world to question whether a crowing cock could cause anything other than the hen responding.

The author pulls off a brilliant take on serious issues in this book. The concept and the language are unique and captivating but it is the satire which keeps one hooked till the end, pushing us to finish the book in one go. I am not sure, but I felt that the cock crowing is allegorical to the crowing sounds made by miscreants, popularly, but not restricted to, in functions, whose intentions are to bring down the performance.

The author is a well known in the Malayalam film circle, laying his hands in critically acclaimed movies. The book is a straightforward recommendation to be read, one to be chewed and ruminated about.

An absolute page turner, "The Cock Is The Culprit" is a satirical fiction that holds a mirror to some of the issues unfolding everyday in the modern India we're part of, in a subtle and metaphorical way. In less than 120 pages, told through the lives of ordinary people in a remote village in Kerala, Unni R has weaved a hilarious, action packed and thought provoking story that forces us to see the many things that we normally choose to overlook and ignore until it concerns us. Without taking names or stating anything categorically, Unni R's imaginative and skillful narration of events leaves the readers with the task of reading between the lines and deciphering the possible meanings to arrive at the message relayed in the book.

Staying true to the original text while translating a book is no easy feat. In this regard, J. Devika, the translator, deserves a special mention for doing justice to the story and its characters.

I loved the book! This was my best read of 2023.

I was hooked from the first chapter, it had excited me like very few novels can even aspire to. It's a small book, but don't assume its thinness as a weakness. The 100 pages in this novella are in no way a lesser experience than a doorstopper novel.

It brings forward the themes of caste discrimination and anti nationalism. His writing style was very new to me and I had fallen in love with this type of storytelling. Gossips and rumours are how he tells his story.

Sharp and hilarious, this book unveils the dark side of the Kerala society.

In this absurd story about how a rooster which crows at inappropriate times escalates into a nationalistic vendetta launched by men in power, Unni R. demonstrates how dangerously volatile a society – and even a nation – can be.

In a world where any contrarian perspectives are quickly deemed anti-national, regardless of whether or not they actually have anything to do with the country, this book reminds us about what happens when we allow ourselves to be stirred so quickly to violence, using religious, national and patriarchal ideals as justification.

In the end, the author ultimately asks the question – which cock is really the culprit?
(And yes, there is a double meaning here)

A seemingly absurd tale subtly packed with relevant social themes

Such a simple issue of a rooster crowing at the wrong times wreaks havoc in someone’s life. Nationalism, interfaith friendship, mob mentality and rational thinking are dealt with brilliantly and subtly. Such unique and intriguing writing!
