The first third of the book is devoted to reiterating the new status quo before swerving into a Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao super-maid team-up adventure that promises to lead into an origin story for Mey-Rin next volume. A solid outing for a series that seems to be course correcting after floundering for a while.

Double trouble as brothers long separated go to war.

Okay we are all past the big reveal about Ciel's past and that thanks to the help of the Undertaker the true heir of the Phantomhive lord has returned. One of the side effects has unfortunately lead to major changes of many of the characters in the story changing it in a way that light-hearted moments of the past (which were welcomed breaks in the darker stories) might never be quite the same in the future. Few of these are more true then the happenstance of Prince Soma who was caught be surprise by the return of the Phantomhive heir and only survived thanks to his friend and servant Agni. Although it is a brief moment at the beginning of this volume I can see how terrible recent events have hit him and can only hope he can find salvation even if he turns his back on it.

Now that Ciel's Brother (the person we thought was Ciel this whole series) is on the run from the law after being accused of stealing Ciel's inheritance and orchestrating the blood collecting rings. Now the former Phantomhive crew is on a mission to clear their name and to handle the problem with Ciel before Undertaker can perfect his reanimation experiment. Only time will tell how the Grim Reapers will all fit in and how the other groups will be able to handle their missions as Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao infiltrate a place of interest and discover something that may test Mey-Rin's loyalties.

It's a war between these brothers as Our Ciel is fighting his place for Earl as he is trying to snuff out all of Undertakers branches. We follow Ran Mau and Mey Rin to the first of these four branches climaxing to what I imagine an impressive showdown in the end. :)

The one problem with Black Butler is that there is never enough. I always want more!

I wait for the volumes, because I don't have the patience for the individual chapters, and I'm so glad. There was SO MUCH content in this volume. I can already see this investigation into the blood banks is going to take a few volumes, with each investigation taking 1 maybe 2 volumes to explore. It's actually really nice to see a bit more of the servants, and learn their back stories. I loved Finny's story, but I've always been intrigued by Mei-Rin's and we're finally going to get it! Poor Prince Soma's part of the story was so sad! I'm hoping for a resolution there, eventually. I'm so proud of him for standing up for himself.

That first chapter broke my heart :( I need a happy ending for Soma please.

This volume seems like the beginning of the (maybe) last arc. I like that we see different characters interacting than usual which makes it interesting. So excited to see how it all comes together.

Most of this is about Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao going undercover at a suspicious manor house. We also learn more information about various other locations that the other members of the team are going undercover at.🙏

This ate though I fear. The mystery of what the hell is going on at this suspicious house where they keep hiring maids but then never have enough of them, the creepy ass Baron taking his pick of maids for the night.🤮 Kill him right now pleaseee.

I've never really been a fan of Mey-Rin because she's lowkey annoying and goofy but she's actually really cool when you get down to it?? When she gets ready to kick ass, gets her guns, and pins up the side of her skirt like okay slay queen.

The ending leads me to believe we will finally be getting her backstory about how she joined the Phantomhive manor so that should be quite interesting.

I liked Ran-Mao in this for once too but she didn't even really do anything or say much. I just like her away from her slave master.😭 I love that she's a team player apart of the squad though.

Real Ciel learning all the shit that is involved in running an estate lmao I just know he was regretting coming back to life with all that. The Undertaker being a chaotic asshole just laughing at him and refusing to help. It's what that kid deserves !!!

I don't get why it started doing this so late in the series but now the chapters are so much shorter and there are more of them so it's so jarring.

Also Sebastian was WEARING THAT SHIT.🥵 Never thought I'd be sold on opium but alright hit me with it.

Series Info/Source: This is the 29th volume in the Black Butler series. I bought this book.

Story (5/5): Ciel continues to be estrange from Phantomhive as his older brother takes over it. The Undertaker seems to be the one pulling the strings and Ciel will stop at nothing to stop the Undertaker. However, the Undertaker’s craft of raising the dead isn’t perfected and he requires certain resources to keep his creations moving which may be his downfall.

Characters (5/5): I love these characters, they are so well done. We get to spend more time with Ciel’s former servants in this book and also get to watch some humorous scenes with Ciel and Sebastian working in an opium den.

Setting (5/5): I continue to love the Victorian setting here, very well done and never gets old for me.

Writing/Drawing Style (5/5): The whole book is just as beautifully drawn as all of the previous ones. I love how the story is tying into so many elements from earlier in the series. I absolutely love both the drawing style and the story here.

My Summary (5/5): Overall I absolutely loved this book and continue to really enjoy the series. I felt like the last couple books were a bit transitional, but this book gets us back into a solid story and really expands on a lot of story elements introduced earlier in the series. This continues to be beautifully drawn and really well put together, I love it!

Despite featuring the same characters and plot, it doesn't feel like a continuation of Vol. 28. It reads more like vignettes.

I still appreciate the information we find in this volume, but the organization and short chapters, feelout of place given the current high stakes.

Ah seru, Ciel+Sebastian vs Ciel+Undertaker.

The first chapters are good too but the best part of this volume is when Mei and Ran infiltrate the country mansion. I feel Mei has had very little spotlight during the series run but now it looks like it's her time. This volume has very little Ciel and Sebastian actually.

The chapters before are setting the stage for this arc, now raised-from-the-dead twin and The Undertaker have taken over the Phantomhive mansion and Ciel (or... well, you know) & co. are fugitives. So, it's a bit pick 'n mix of chapters in the first half of the volume. Special mention to the chapter that starts this volume is about Sooma and boooy, he's not in a good place. I think whenever he'll be back on the pages will be very interesting. He's been such a cheery character but now...

Great stuff as always and looks stunning.

This truly my favourite manga series. I feel like not much happened in this volume when in fact lots of things did. I am always so impatient for the next volume! So much Undertaker! Swoon!

Black Butler volume 29 proves that readers should be prepared to buckle in for quite a while. The manga is likely going to cover a few fronts before really settling back on the titular character and his young master, let alone show the inevitable reunion (or rather, re-reunion) between brothers.

Before Toboso sets up the next phase of the manga, first she does some check-ins with Soma, the Reapers, and the other Ciel. Soma is struggling to accept Agni’s death, and judging from how the chapter ends, I’m guessing we won’t see him for quite a while. But when he returns, he’s likely going to throw some well-laid plans off-course. Meanwhile, Othello and Grelle talk a bit about the Undertaker, kind of recapping the whole situation. Other-Ciel meanwhile starts to reestablish himself as Earl Phantomhive, and while he isn’t mad about protagonist-Ciel’s deception, this Ciel is showing signs of being mad in the other sense of the word. The glare when his aunt and uncle leave the estate, the happy smile looking out the window, disposing of Funtom Corporation’s sample toys…is it indifference? Cruelty? His own true feelings versus a corrupted personality from his state of being?

Those are questions that aren’t going to be answered anytime soon, as for now, his little brother and his companions are planning a blood blockade. After narrowing down possible leads, Protagonist-Ciel, his servants, Lau, and Ran-Mao split up to investigate four suspicious places with connections to members of the Aurora Society.

For the rest of the volume, it focuses on one of the more unusual pairings in this mission: Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao. The two of them are sent to go undercover as maids and find out about their master and why maids are constantly needed at this mansion. While the beginning isn’t terrible — the little tidbits we pick up help fill in the overall picture — it is great to get back to investigating and eventual face-offs.

It’s easy to think of Mey-Rin as just another one of the bad-servants-but-amazing-warriors like Finny and company, but here we see her capable side. Not that Ran-Mao is incapable, of course, but Ran-Mao is not much of a talker. The next volume preview shows that Mey-Rin’s past is going to be revealed, but I don’t know how much is going to be set in the present versus the past. But I liked seeing the two of them going undercover since it’s a combination you wouldn’t normally see. I can’t wait to see Lau and Baldo for the same reason. For now though, Ran-Mao’s quiet disposition also makes it natural for the often-apologetic and ditzy Mey-Rin to take more of the leader role.

I am a little bit concerned that the other three groups will all face nearly-identical situations, but depending on Mey-Rin’s flashback and how the situation at this manor plays out, we may have to wait until volume 31 to find out. Right now, I appreciated Black Butler returning to its groove versus the “but wait, there’s more!” approach of the last.

(SPOILERS MENORES)

The truth about Ciel has shaken the world of everyone close to him, but it’s not the whole truth. Nor is the boy formerly known as Ciel willing to accept this. He still has his allies, including one hell of a butler. Those allies are working to undermine their enemies, going undercover in a number of places, defying the danger which awaits them.

There was a lot of Mey Rin in this particular volume, showing what she’s capable of once more. Of particular notice was a spectacular panel of Sebastian, impressing Lau with how adept he is at corruption. He’s one hell of a fugitive after all. Who’s an enemy and who’s an ally is quite different than in the anime. I’m curious what Ciel’s other agents are up to and what they’re uncovering. We see a much more serious side to Grell, along with how different the Earls Phantomhives are. Lots of character development weaves their way through beautiful panels of artwork. The mystery and the plot don’t slack off, not a bit, leaving me very curious what will happen next.

Well. Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao was not a duo I thought would work that well. But they did! DAMN!

It’s never gonna get old how Mey-Rin really really wants to be a good servants, but keeps failing. I will say though, she’s gotten better at her job as the manga progresses. Here she’s good enough to get hired by a bit mysterious household going under cover for Fake Ciel. (Damnit, I can’t… I need a namne!)

And even though Ran-Mao isn’t exactly speaking much… She’s doing a really good job going undercover as well. And she’s brave to! Even though she’s such a fan-service character. I guess I have to change my mind about her a lil.

Anyhoodle, Fake Ciel is back to his scheming. Now I’m finally recognizing him! He is going to take down his undead lil brother come hell or hight water! And considering he has Sebastian, his devil/demon working for him… I’m sure he’ll find a way to do so.

Considering what Mey-Rin discovers during her undercover work… I would say he is on the right track.

Things are getting more heated! And I love it!
