Veronica

Rate this book
Veronica is a simple lady's companion who accepts her lot in life to sit on the sidelines and watch others have fun escapades and adventures. After all, she's stuck—she has no dowry, it's incredible unlikely she'd ever marry. But deep inside Veronica is the overwhelming desire to be disciplined… Enough so that she writes sordid tales about punishment in her diary, which one day falls in love with the very duke that one of her stories is about!

Tired of demanding mistresses that don't appreciate his interests in spanking and discipline, the Duke immediately singles Veronica out as a perfect solution to his problem—he'd marry this woman and get everything he wanted; marriage to a beautiful woman and one who would like receiving punishment as much as he liked dealing it.

But there's a very fine line between punishments and playful spankings in the bedchamber, and Veronica finds it difficult to get one but not the other as well. Will his attentions prove to be too much? Or will she yearn for his hand no matter how firmly he applies it to her bottom?

My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book...

Veronica by Nattie Jones was my first try of the author’s work, and I’m not really impressed. There are things about the story bothered me a lot even though I read a lot of erotica with light BDSM. I wasn’t fond of the author’s writing either.

This was the story of a lady’s companion, Veronica and her sudden marriage to a Duke based on a mutual desire... spanking.

Veronica, the orphaned and poor daughter of a baron, has been a lady’s companion for a while now. She’s not really fond of her position in life but has resigned to being a spinster and to working for living. But she has this irresistible desire to be spanked... on her bottom. Something she deems someone like her shouldn’t want because it’s probably not ‘normal’. But she can’t help wanting it so, she details her desire in her diary.

When the story begins, Veronica was staying with her employer at the estate of the Duke of Durhamshire. One day, when she goes in the library for some quiet time, Veronica loses her diary. This scene was pretty odd, and confusing. How she just leaves it there, as if to be found by the Duke. Her employer, one of her female friends and the Duke come in the library... and they find the diary together. One of them even starts reading aloud from it! Veronica tries to hide herself in the shadows of the library but the Duke sees her. He also takes the diary from that woman.

After the debacle, Veronica finds herself summarily dismissed because her employer recognized the diary. But the Duke pays a call afterwards, surprising her with a proposal of his own for a marriage based on whatever she wrote in the diary. After all, that was a narrative of THE DUKE spanking her. Oh yes, she’s been fantasizing over the Duke ever since she saw him. What she didn’t know that the Duke has also been attracted to her. Now that they’re given a chance to act on their mutual desire, the Duke will not hear a no. How can Veronica reject such an offer, especially when Jeffrey said that he’s alone?

The Duke, Jeffrey, is tired of mistresses and their demands. Also the fact that he hasn’t found a woman who loves to take spanking the way he wants give it. Veronica seems like a girl after his own heart! And so, soon enough they get married.

The story is told from Veronica’s POV. We find her self-doubting her abilities to act as a Duchess. I thought it was logical. She has acted as a lady’s companion all her life, so on her first day as a Duchess she makes some funny mistakes that only embarrass her at Jeffrey’s home. She’s confused about her new station, and her increased obsession over her husband’s spanking (love making comes second to that, at least that’s how I saw it!).

Veronica also meets Georgette, Jeffrey’s younger sister who is married to Lord Riverchurch. Georgette seems very happy with her life and welcomes Veronica with open arms, though Lord Riverchurch takes a dislike to her on spot. I never really knew why he disliked her. Was it because he knew of Jeffrey’s fetish, since he himself shared the same fetish (once even a mistress too) or was it because she was a lady’s companion?

Later, we find Veronica and Jeffrey acting on their desire. Veronica was to obey his wishes. She’d be spanked for everything; be it something good, or bad... even if its Jeffrey’s fault, she’ll be the one who’d be spanked! Jeffrey was just crazy about naked female ass, especially Veronica’s. Honestly, there were wayyyy too much spanking, peddling going on. I mean I’m not saying spanking is bad but it was just... weird. Veronica craved it, so much so that she’d feel bereaved if Jeffrey didn’t spank her at least once a day! I found that not only Jeffrey and Lord Riverchurch liked it but even Georgette did, though her husband never acted on it, rather preferring a mistress (the jerk!). Both Jeffrey and Lord Riverchurch liked spanking the wayward female servants, something that made me rather uncomfortable.

The servants in general would sometimes be horrified by the way Jeffrey would spank Veronica and make her cry. Of course, they were playing a game that the servants didn’t understand. Neither did I and so, I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. I sometimes found Jeffrey scary because he was too unpredictable. I didn’t know what was ‘game’ and what was ‘real punishment’. He even threatens to bloody her ass in one scene! It might’ve turned Veronica on but me? Nope. I didn’t think any of the scenes were hot. That certainly wasn’t my cuppa. For an erotica, there weren’t even enough hot sex scenes in it.

I found the author’s writing stilted, choppy. The scene sequences didn’t match. Many a times I had to read a paragraph twice or more to get what the hell was happening, ie., in one scene, Veronica was sitting down to read a book. When Georgette came to her for a chat, she ‘puts down her sewing’ to talk to her. Now, when did she pick up sewing instead of the book, I have NO idea. Sometimes I didn’t know if they were in Georgette’s house, or Jeffrey’s townhouse or whatever because nothing was mentioned specifically. Let’s not forget the fact that Veronica was ‘giggling’ constantly!

Another thing I thought rather strange was Veronica’s jealousy of Georgette. Over the course of the story, they spend a lot of time together and talk about spanking quite frankly. That is when Georgette lets Veronica know about her own wishes to be spanked. Then she mentions she has even asked Jeffrey to spank her, though he never did comply with her wishes, to Georgette’s utter disappointment! She asked her own brother to spank her? WTF??! Veronica gets jealous and remains jealous of Georgette and Jeffrey’s relationship most of the story. I understand she wanted Jeffrey all to herself and spank her to smithereens, which is good... for them personally. She doesn’t get jealous of the talks of his mistresses and yet, she’s jealous of Jeffrey’s sister and his affection for her?

I really didn’t know what to think of that.

But, there were times I thought Jeffrey could be sweet (when he wasn’t being a weirdo). The fact that he was totally set on Veronica and scared of losing her was something I liked. Those scenes gave me hopes that this might get better, but sadly, as a whole, it didn’t. And I couldn’t really connect with Veronica. 3 stars.

Here’s something that is stuck with me even now:

“I yearned to be the center of my husband's attention, and yearned even more for my bottom to be the center of his attention.”

*facepalm*

This story seemed to start out very typical of other historical pieces where the girl has fantasy, catches the eye of the lord of the manor, and they end up wed. Most stories end here with an implied HEA. What sets Veronica apart is what comes next. We see Veronica's battle with her own thoughts and feelings about being spanking and how see will real fit into the Duke's life. She battles jealous feelings for her new sister-in-law and her relationship with the Duke. The last third of the story deals with a careless comment from the Duke. We see that Veronica has really grown and is a stronger woman and it will change but her life and the life of the Duke forever. Well written historical with an interesting twist.

This wasn’t for me, there wasn’t much of a storyline. I felt Veronica was insecure and unsure of her self worth. She craved discipline but then doubted herself for wanting it. There was also a side story concerning Jeffrey’s (the duke) sister and her husband. I know some reviewers really enjoyed it but unfortunately I didn’t. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Nattie Jones is a great writer and I will be purchasing more of her books. This is a classic erotic romance that made me wish I could trade places with Veronica! Who doesn't want to be swept up by a Duke and live a live of privilege and pleasure?

Veronica’s desires come true with marriage to the Duke.

Veronica Bridges is a lady’s companion with unlikely prospects of marriage. She has no dowry and her parents were killed in an accident. She has an overwhelming desire to be disciplined by spanking and she has penned detailed imaginary tales about her being spanked in her diary. She accidently leaves her diary out and it is found and red by the unmarried Jeffry, Duke of Durhamshire. Jeffery has the proclivity to discipline with spanking and because they have complementary tastes, and after observing her he decides Veronica is the lady that he should marry. Being of different social stations there are some bumps in the beginning of the marriage, where their mutual desire produces a lot of discipline situations with spanking serving as both foreplay and afterplay for their intimate couplings. Veronica has some trust issues with Jeffery and her insecurities cause her to leave home for a few months, but in the end they reach and HEA.
The plot situations are realistic with Veronica’s somewhat independent nature producing many opportunities requiring the Duke’s spankings. The characters interaction is very entertaining, as well as educational. It is an excellent story and well presented. I recommend the book and look forward to reading more of Ms. Jones’s work

I need to say first that I review books of all genres, and have favorably reviewed many that included spanking, BDSM, littles, and all kinds of other content. If you look at my review history, it is easy to verify that is true. I state that because I want to be clear that I am not opposed in theory to the content of this book.

I volunteered to review the book because I really liked the premise as set forth in the blurb. For me though, the story just fell flat. I didn’t find any of the characters likable, least of all Veronica and Jeffrey, the main characters. I couldn’t find a reason to be interested in them, and therefore I never was able care what would happen to them or between them. I had a glimmer of hope later in the book that I would feel some sincerity from the male lead character at least, but then it kind of fizzled.

There is a lot of spanking … for any reason, for no reason, for all reasons. Unfortunately, the only emotion that came through to me was desperation.

Veronica is a lady's companion. Her diary is found and read by one of the ladies at the house party and it details her desire to be punished by the Duke. Jeffrey decides that he wants to marry Veronica because they have similar desires. Veronica is very insecure in his love and when Jeffrey makes a blunt statement, it hurts her feelings. She leaves to go to Bath with her sister-in-law and Jeffrey needs to find a way to get her back. There is a lot of punishment and discipline in this book. Enjoyed the book. It is well written and interesting if you enjoy domestic discipline. Jeffrey is looking for a wife who will enjoy being disciplined and believes Veronica may be the right person for him. Veronica has always wanted to be spanked and it appears that Jeffrey is more than willing to accommodate her. There are a few bumps along the way to a HEA but they eventually get there. It is a good read and I would recommend it.

Veronica was a lady s companion who wrote what she wanted. Her book landed in the hands of the Duke. After reading her book, he decided she would be his wife. They both enjoyed the games they played but Veronica had a hard time believing it. In the end they talked about what they each wanted and became closer .

A story set in victorian times, this had good characters, each with their own desires. Luckily for us, that made for a wonderful read. Her life has not been as she hoped it would be given her past but things began to look up when she meets a Duke who is intrigued by her writings.

Alright let me begin. The main characters Veronica and Jeffrey were interesting. The beginning of the story was a bit boring and it appeared as if Veronica was immature. There was no courting nor romance between them when Jeffrey proposed. About two thirds of the way it became more interesting. Veronica was maturing and beginning to understand her own feelings and desires and what that meant and also how it related to Jeffrey's ways. I would have liked more interaction between Veronica and Lady Bridget after the marriage. It would have been more satisfying to see her shock and humiliation. There was just a little bit during Veronica and Georgette's time in Bath. I did like Jeffrey's sister Georgette. She was a sweet yet adventurous person. Her husband was another story and I would have liked to know what did he do with his mistress that was so different from Jeffrey. I don't mind this genre I feel there could have been more substance to the story if there had been romance and courting. This is definitely not "Spankalicious". There is room for improvement.

Veronica is a young woman in Victorian England, whose parents died and so she is working as a companion for a noble woman. She has no expectations of a marriage, but thanks to accidentally leaving her diary – with her desires about being spanked – where it can be seen by others, she is approached by Jeffrey, an unmarried Duke who reads the diary, and would like to marry someone who has these interests. He has been watching her, and decides she is the woman he wants as a wife. Needless to say, their different stations in life, going into the marriage, create a lot of interesting dialog; as does their mutual interest in spanking. The story is fast paced and both characters are energetic and committed to each other, and it is fun to see the relationship develop despite a number of problems. From companion to Duchess.
A ladies companion becomes a Duchess in this naughty little tale. Our duke wants a lady who can be receptive to his desires. What Jeffery finds is a lady who will accept punishment from her husband. Veronica did find the reality a bit more than she expected. The road they joinery on is not without some bumps along the way. The problems are realistic it is easy to be insecure base on the way of life one of the characters had been living. I liked Jeffrey, Veronica, and Georgette not so much Michael but that is what made the story so good characters facing real issues. Do make sure you read the description about this book this piece may not be for everyone. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Imagine having your innermost erotic desires suddenly being revealed to your employer and her entourage! That’s what happened to Veronica when her diary was discovered by Lady Caroline and the Duke of Durhamshire, in his library. What happens from there is the literal living out of her fantasies for Veronica. This Victorian romance is a love story with a different set of drivers and deliverables. Some great support characters, especially the Duke’s sister Georgette. Lots of strict and stimulating spankings and some erotic sex. 4 Stars

This is a unique twist on the regency story. We have a companion to a lady who has a diary and disclosed her wish to be spanked. None other than a Duke finds it and wished to marry, but a companion to a lady is beneath a Duke. This alone creates its own set of issued. I love the way the characters were written and portrayed. Great story and unique plot line. I would recommend this book, and I will be reading more from Nattie Jones.

When Lady's companion Veronica's private, and a bit naughty, diary is read by Jeffry, Duke of Durhamshire, what does he do with this tantalizing bit of information, Jeffry asks Veronica to marry him. If she is anything like her lusty diary, he believes they will be the perfect match. I loved the premise of this book. The characters were interesting, well written, the book well paced and a page turner. Se*y, fun read with a HEA. Veronica by Nattie Jones

Veronica is a lady’s companion and with no dowry has little chance to ever marry. She also has a secret; she has a desire to be disciplined and writes stories about punishment. When the stories fall into the hands of a duke that happens to be in one of the stories, he knows that he wants her. Will she enjoy what he has in store for her? Fast-paced read with loads of drama and emotion. Great characters and plenty of steam. I liked it.

Book has a great story and characters were really cute. It's just felt weird, and like something was off and missing. Plus it doesn't help that Veronica plays to much of a naive idiot, I can see more in her but the story wasn't portraying it like it should.

Losing her diary was the worst and the best thing that could have happened to Veronica. She lost her job as a ladies maid but gained a husband and one who spanked to boot! Their relationship is not always perfect but in the end they do get their HEA.
