When treading the path of ascension, you'd better watch your step.
After incursions of Demons from another plane of existence changed the course of history, humanity learned one undeniable truth: traditional weapons wouldn't cut it. Those strong enough to resist, cultivated their Ki, and emerged as Heroes of Ascension to combat the demonic threat.
For two hopeful Ascendants, J and Alex, this journey begins at Wyvern Academy. But surviving in one of the world's top battle academies isn't the only thing they have to worry about. Fellow students and rivals, beautiful girls, and treacherous exams stand in the way of their first steps on the path of ascension.
Wyvern Academy is a harem cultivation novel written by authors Atlas Kane, bestselling author of Chimera King, and Grayson Sinclair, LitRPG author of Hive Knight. Wyvern Academy is inspired by Japanese Light Novels as well as a deep love and respect for anime, kung fu, martial arts, and battle academy adventures.
Imagine a story that combines My Hero Academia, IP Man, and your favorite harem novel, and you'll have Wyvern Academy...
Caution to Readers: Wyvern Academy Light Novels contain explicit adult content, unconventional / harem relationships, graphic and persistent violence, and occasional lapses in decorum that would make your dear mother faint. Proceed at your own risk.
The story failed to get me interested in the characters the double MC'S was not interesting to me. The secondary characters are flat with little depth and the ladies just did not get me interested in reading more about them. J I found to be brash and boring and Alex had a chance to get me interested but ultimately failed to do this. The cultivation aspect of this book was very weak and had little explanation about it and the characters seem to just wonder from one thing to another with no real plan on what they where going to do. Overall it was a 2.5out of 5rounded up I will not be reading anything else in this series.
The main character ruined this one for me. The writing was good, the fights well choreographed. The world concept was interesting. The protagonist was a whiny child who did not accept how his own actions were impacting his life. He had some hard times growing up but that does not justify his blind spot. He is not someone I want to read about.
A good read .. if you are ok with two points of views
Personally I’m not a fan of books where the point of view switches between characters, but I don’t think it would have sold as well as you read the same scenarios from two different characters POV. The 2 MC’s are completely different, one a harem king confident in his abilities with plenty of matching sex scenes, the other a half Japanese boy who shyly holds his girlfriends hand while blushing... but it works. It seems to be a mix of martial arts and a high school scenario so you have all your standard bully tropes and boy girl angst, but J disrupts much of that by his multi-partner sex scenes. I liked this book and will hang out for the next in the series.
I received a free copy of this in exchange for a fair review. I did it on YouTube and will leave it linked below. This review will feature key points I think are important to highlight.
Plot: Well done. It is clear and concise, it does not run off on tangents that add nothing to the story or characters. It did not take long to establish the characters or what they hoped to accomplish. I am very happy with the pacing and development except for one tiny time when going from chapter 15 to chapter 16 because the place where they are in chapter 16 was not mentioned or foreshadowed at any point in the previous 15 chapters. The transition was rough and a bit jarring. Otherwise, the plot and story progression was great!
Characters: Very interesting! I like J and Alex they both have rough motherless backstories but turned out to be very different. I like the bromance/brotherly relationship they develop through the book and I love the supporting cast. J has a small harem of honeys that don't get the most individual development but that are clearly different from each other and each helps him be better in a different way. Alex has 2 female friends that are between platonic and love interests and that are promising members of whatever future harem he decides to build. These two girls get a lot more development and stand on their own quite well. We can't forget the huge supporting cast who are all distinct and different. We have the bully jock turned neutral, the evil but smoking principal, a good group of secondary fighters, and a whole slew of other characters.
World-Building: Good! It works well and mostly focuses on developing the fighting style of each set of characters and what they stand for. We do get some world building about the world outside of the school but it is minimal and mostly to foreshadow things to come. I am excited to see more of the demons in future books
Fan Service: Good the smutty scenes were good, exciting but classy enough. I enjoyed the way it clearly meant something to the characters, it wasn't just to get the reader to enjoy themselves. Good stuff. Lots of it too, mostly from J and his ladies.
Dual MC is not really my thing, but I am always open to having my biases proved wrong and decided to give this book a try. I have previously enjoyed some of Atlas Kane's works and figured that I would give it a try. This would also allow me to experience some of Grayson Sinclair's writings (whom I have not previously read) and see if they managed to add something to the story, and were a writer to consider in future purchases.
I also have a deep love of cultivation-type stories.
Unfortunately, this story proved to be a purchase mistake and a reading disappointment.
One of the core principles of a good story is a relatable and understandable Main Character, who deals with situations that the reader wants to see (and see how) that Main Character then resolves.
Wyvern's Academy, originally managed to generate some sympathy for Alex, being recently betrayed by his 'best friend', held back by casual racism against him, and by having a father who, while loving, is clearly becoming an alcoholic. (All of this is Chapter 1 stuff, so not a *Spoiler* by any means).
However, Alex does nothing to stop or alter the situation. Instead, he leaves things as they are (both figuratively and literally) choosing instead to leave.
J, or James, the other 'Main Character' is just an ass and I found little to no redeeming qualities to him.
Beyond this, trying to follow the different MCs, their relationships, and tribulations, more specifically the constant switching between perspectives, takes away from the immersion and removes much of the urgency.
Honestly, I think this whole Wyvern Academy series would have been better IF this had been written as two separate stories taking place in the same world. This would have allowed each story to focus more on a single main character, with Alex (or James), being a friend and ally (with their own set of books).
Fantasy martial arts harem There are two MCs, which is a change from the usual. We have Alex Nakatone, a blond Japanese-American who is loved by his father and discriminated by those around him, and J (short for James) Mallory, a tough street kid a little older than most his peers, driven from home at a young age by an alcoholic father who used yell and torture his own son. Engaging backstories. They and hundreds of others complete to Ascend, that is earn magical runes to help channel ki to fight demons that invade and kill. I don't normally like first-person stories with more than one perspective. I've read two of the touted Chimera books, and based on that, bought the book and gave it a read. And I applaud the choice to include the name of the MC in the chapter-name to let me know up front whose perspective the chapter would focus on. No guessing. Thank you! The story itself is a great read, and I wish I had the funds to buy book 2. Well done. Try it and see. Recommended.
I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up this book on a whim and started listening too it. At first I was a bit hesitant about it. However after a while I found I couldn't and didn't want too stop listening. It was really a hidden gem. I immediately enjoyed the characters the world building. Heck I even enjoyed the magic system, even though it wasn't exactly unique. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 authors take on it. If I have a single complaint about the series it's that the books are very short and that it seems to be out of greed. So they can sell more, shorter books fast and make a good buck on it. It seems too have become the new trend and I really dislike it. But I'll still read them and it doesn't detract from the greatness of the series.
I started and dropped this book several times because the beginning was annoying. Many of the martial arts books have immature, arrogant and shallow main characters which hold no interest for me. Fortunately I was eventually able to force myself to keep reading to gain a deeper understanding of the two main characters. Traumatized young people who are striving to overcome their past are hard for me to connect to as it triggers my own trauma. By the end of this book I am loving it and eager to get to the second one.
I really enjoyed this book it was a lot of fun and a lot of thought went into the description of the characters and their personalities. And I thought the story flowed rather well and kept me interested throughout the whole book I had a hard time putting it down and read it mostly without stopping. I will buy the second book I hope it comes out soon I really enjoyed it.
It's ok. I was really put off when the point of view changed to a different character without warning. No subtle narrator shift. Just the book talking in the first person, next chapter a first person narration but, didn't the MC have a different style, didn't the MC have a good relationship with his dad? Oh wait these can't be the same person. Who is this new guy, and when did it switch?
Alex left Japan to go to an interview to attend at Wyvern Academy .
Alex was turned down at the number one academy in the World because of his heritage . So his dad got him an interview at the second best academy in the World . It was his chance to prove to them that they were wrong about him . So he flew across the World to attend the interview and get into Wyvern Academy .Got in he did an he intended to fight to stay there an graduate .recommend reading excellent series .
DNF. The beginning put me off and I bailed on it. The MC (or one of them I guess) was a whiny kid who cried when his neighbor didn't want to be his friend. I was revolted by him at first impression. But then, switch!, all of a sudden you are in the POV of the other MC. He's equally unlikeable and I quit after that. I hate whiny man-child MCs and I hate multiple POVs. So I didn't give it much of a chance.
Being a fan of martial arts, I really enjoyed this book. It took about half the book to get used to the dual story following the two main characters, but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed the way it was written. Plenty of martial arts action and a good starting story to introduce the characters. Looking forward to reading more.
The writing is juvenile, and the dialogue is even worse.... It's like watching knockoff Chinese anime where they try to be edgy but come off as ridiculous. Whoever wrote this definitely owns a fake sword collection. I don't understand what's with this trend of books that read like fantasies for sheltered teenage boys...
4 stars for easy fun. The build of the two main characters was enjoyable. Using multiple different types of martial art styles established and new kept the interest up. Hope to read another.
Good read good characters. Good backgrounds for them, and also it's nice to see a cultivation story that has team work, actual team work since this type of story usually had characters that live and breath "out for myself"
The book was very well written, and the description of the different types of martial arts were fantastic. I loved the characters and how lifelike they were. I saw my friend and I reflected back in them with their personality and actions.
Loved the narrative switch and the pacing was perfect. Only complaint was a lack of back story/world building, but the book kind of lends itself to the fact that everything will be explained in upcoming books. Keep up the good job!
Modern academy cultivation life meets wild wild west.... or lord of the flies. Want to kill someone in school? Go ahead they will just kick you out later. The law apparently doesn't apply to academies. Want to roofie someone? Go ahead and nothing will happen to you.
This book had a unique story line and we'll developed characters. The research into mixed martial Arts really showed. The harem aspects were also well placed and balanced.
This book touched on so many great elements! We see the growth of individuals and that of relationships. The world building in this story is phenomenal and makes you want more of the lore and history of the world!
3.5 stars rounded up. The alternating POVs did not do it for me in this book. With each MC having different styles due to the multiple authors. I will give book 2 a shot.
The story is a cultivation story written almost like a serial. More slice of life than driving plot.
I like the way the authors have done their ki system. The characters are fun to read and show growth, side characters included. Grabbing the next one now!
Really enjoyed the book! Nothing absolutely groundbreaking but entertaining non the less. Liked the use and description of the various martial arts styles. Will be continuing with the series and looking into more by the authors.
Well written, non stop, fight academy and girls. Wyvern academy 200 years in the future, the youth of the world must train to fight the growing menace of inter dimensional demon incursions.
This is a good book. You shouldy read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The book is a good read. i enjoyed it alot.. Download or buy it today. why not? Unfortunately for mr the constant switching points of view from the two Mc was too much.
I gotta say it’s definitely a good story. Not sure who is the mc is though. At first I thought Alex but it does seem that I had more time. Either way I did enjoy and look fwd to more
Really enjoyed this book. It’s different as you’re looking at the story through 2 peoples eyes, but it doesn’t detract from what’s happening. It actually enhances the storyline. Definitely looking forward to reading more of this series
two MC. both young man learning different martial arts coming to a academy where they are trained to fight demons. One MC is a womens man while the other is very shy - interesting combination. A bit too much "anime" like for my taste but an easy read for a lazy vacation day.
This story is essentially split between 2 main characters, an obnoxious jock with questionable morals who has women constantly wanting to be on top of him (and also where the harem happens) + a nerd who is secretly a badass.. The latter, his situation and growing relationships I enjoyed, the former I mostly ignored and skipped the chapters from his POV entirely.
