Adversity often comes without warning. Bad news is shocking. Betrayal is heartbreaking. It’s natural for a church leader to feel defensive and want to fight back. But fear and anger make for poor strategies when it comes to resolving conflict and thriving afterward. Is it possible to rise above the storm and even thrive despite it? Ordained minister and leadership consultant Alfred Ells says yes, it is. Through stories of leaders who have suffered the traumas of betrayal, conflict, and failure, he provides insights, wisdom, and instruction on how to leverage adversity to become a resilient leader skilled at repairing any breach.
“Leaders are like trees. They need the winds of adversity and the pressure and challenge presented by crisis to sharpen their leadership skills. Our stormy times and even failures can strengthen our inner beings and cause us to fully mature and thrive. Unexpected adversity is often painful yet crucial to the later success of a leader.”
This book is a must read for anyone who desires or is in a leadership role both in or outside church ministry. Every leader will face their share of challenges, crises, and criticism and the wisdom found within these pages will help them not only get through the deep waters but thrive once again!
I enjoyed it. Covered a lot of ground. There are chapters that read a bit like best practices type of stuff, but several go into deeper waters that made it well worth it. The last 2 chapters may have been my favorite. But lot of wisdom in there, but at teams feels like a survey of resilience issues and dynamics.
A book about how to learn to live with adversity in many forms. The author uses many examples from his own life, his own experiences or others. Enjoyed the book and got many thoughts from it.
