This Book was chop Full of amazing information about the voice and the vocal cords and how they work, which I loved. I also loved how it taught about altering your vowel sounds to save vocal energy and avoid straining. The singing course I'd taken before mentioned nothing about that. My only problem with the book was that it was too much of a website promotion. I got this on audiobook, so I don't know how different the regular printed version would be. In the audio version, in just about every chapter, there were teasing little samples of vocal Exercises. Then if you wanted to get the rest of the exercises, you have to go to beginningsinging.com. There was so much repetitious promoting of that website, it felt like I was listening to a recording of an infomercial, rather than an audiobook about singing. That is NOT a cool sales tactic in my opinion, after spending $14 for the book. But maybe I'm talking nonsense. I only skimmed through a lot of that website. Maybe the rest of the exercises in the book are free. I'll have to check that out later on. Still, the constant website promoting was annoying. I Felt like I was being nagged. Or like the author was trying to brainwash me. Other than that, the rest of the book was very informative, useful, and most important of all, very enjoyable.
I absolutely loved this book it was a game changer for me it definitely allowed me to be able to set up a rubric so that I know exactly what I am looking for in my voice as well as what I should be looking for very insightful I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to start seeing or who is trying to further the career or take it seriously absolutely amazing!!!
A solid intro to singing. I've been following John Henny for a few years via his YouTube videos, podcast, and a webinar or two and I really like his attitude and approach to both singing and teaching. I'm not truly a beginner (though my skill level feels like it to me!) so I already know a lot of the theory behind the voice and how it works, but even so, I never felt bored during those parts of this book, and I even learned some new things.
For me, the biggest gem here is the exercises. They're described in text in the book, but John also has set up a website where book owners can go to access video and audio clips demonstrating the exercises. As with John's other content I've seen, it's all high-quality and well-organized. There are enough of these to feel like they add some real value, but not so many that it's overwhelming, especially as they're introduced intermittently throughout the book as each concept is covered. I noticed a difference in my voice after doing just a couple of them, and while I still have a lot to work on I really feel like this book has given me some additional tools to do that with.
Probably the best book ever written.for begginers on Singing..it will take you from babysteps and Structured learning..to make you want to jump on Stage..Brilliant..!!
A good read with basic starting terms and concepts about our voice and singing. A good outline identifying where to start. It's more about what to expect and options about how and where to start. There's not a lot of detail. But this is good, in my opinion, if you're new and just want an easy to read introduction. Just ordered my OOVO singing straw! The how-to videos to use the straw for training are very useful. I haven't checked out any of the links which could be useful or not.
Having played music with the worship team at our church, I was never confident to sing. This has given me a little confidence to at least sign back up and harmony.
I really enjoyed this book very much. Short and to the point. The points Mr. Henry made were exactly what I needed to hear and understand. The supported website is also a great help. Thanks
