Note: This is the second edition of this title. It features bonus chapters that were not featured in its first edition. It is also part one of a New Adult I/R Romance. Suggested for mature audiences due to its explicit sex and moderate drug use.
G.L. Tomas is a USA Today bestselling twin writing duo and lover of all things blerdy, fearless and fun.
When they're not spending their time crafting swoon-worthy heroes, they're battling alien forces in other worlds but occasionally take days off in search of mom and pop spots that make amazing pasteles and tostones fried to perfection.
They host salsa lessons and book boyfriend auditions in their secret headquarters located in Connecticut..
I loved this book so much that I'm gonna try to do my first GIF review. Here it goes.
First I gotta give props to Teddy. She was a really good character. I loved her. She was imperfect and dealing with disease the best way she knew through friend-therapy, sex, and recreational drugs.
Now that that's over, I gotta gush over the male protag Asher. I am a book addict, so I've read hundreds of books (most preGooreads), but I can't remember ever reading a book and feeling such lovely deep feelings. Afer years of searching, I finally found my first book boyfriend. And he looks something like this:
He has dark hair, blue eyes, a skater boy, and is full of tattoos.
Oh be still my beating heart.
Now that my gushing is over. Let's talk about the story
GL Tomas did their thing. There was plenty of sex. Lots of voyeuristic sex.
Besides the sexiness of Asher, what put this F*this over the edge was how it pushed the envelope of the genre.
1. Asher is bisexual and I was like
As a black women (maybe white folks too) we are taught to stay the hell away from "gay" men (for some bisexual means gay). So my first book boyfriend was gay. That made me uncomfortable, and it forced me to face biases. Cause Asher made sure to make the distinction between gay and bisexual. And in turn, it gave me my diversity high. I love to be challenged.
2. Hard drugs. The duo did acid together. Hard drugs. Again it made me uncomfortable, but it was also groundbreaking and edgy. Most authors aren't brave enough to go there. it wasn't glorified or vilified. It was just a thing Teddy tried.
G.L. Tomas books are my new obsession. I was in love with this (just like the others). I hope Asher and Teddy have a chance in the next book. I was thankful for the first chapter of book 2 being included because that left me feeling optomistic. I wished Teddy would have made healthier choices (alcohol and cigarettes had me cringing), but I understand being young and wanting to live for the moment. Very realistic characters. Great dialogue. I was interested in this from start to finish. Devoured every word. Didn't skim at all! Five big gold stars! Excellent writing.
Asher was messy, but I didn’t mind getting a little messy sometimes.
This read is a rollercoaster to say the least. I would say it’s a love triangle, but it really isn’t. Teddy has some secrets and they are big. Reggie missed his shot, and Asher is shooting his. It’s a bit angsty and a bit emotional. Sometimes I wasn’t a fan of the writing flow, but in the end I liked the plot/story so much that I forgave the flow and pacing. Definitely plan to check out book two and see how things pan out!!
Let me start by saying that I overall enjoyed this story, but not without some personal reservations. I am one of those readers who can’t read anything objectively without my personal feelings getting involved. I’m just not, so with that in mind, here are my thoughts:
What I love most about this story is that it is culturally rich. This isn’t just a story about Teddy, a black woman, who’s an Afro Cubana, and not just for the sake of “exoticizing” her or trying to make her “different”, but the cultural references to who she is as a black woman of Afro Cuban descent is present throughout. From the language, to the food, to the music, I dug it.
Asher is the tall, handsome alt white dude who is the current object of Teddy’s affections. When I say alt, I mean it in every sense. He’s tatted and pierced practically from the roota to the toota (Ok, I’m slightly exaggerating, but he does have two sleeves and umpteen piercings.) Asher is also sexually fluid, meaning he’s down for whatever and doesn’t like labels assigned to him. Okay…do you boo…
I enjoyed reading how these two navigate through their budding relationship that is filled with a healthy dose of drama, particularly when they share a mutual friend who could pose a threat to their relationship. Actually, Teddy and Asher have several obstacles in their relationship, and it’s emotionally charged at times.
What I didn’t care too much about this story is all the back and forth between these two. I know they’re young (early 20’s), but damn, get it together. They fronted like they weren’t feeling each other as deeply as they did out of fear of getting hurt or saving face, but sheesh…I also wasn’t feeling all the recreational drug use. Totally not my scene, but to each their own…Overall, a very good story worth reading. This is book one of a two-part series, so yeah, it does end on a mild cliffhanger. Now, off to read book 2…
F*THS is not your typical NA romance novel, and that's a wonderful thing. As a rule, I'm not a fan of the genre, finding it way too problematic on so many levels. Lack of inclusion, slut shaming, normalizing abusive or stalkerish behavior is just the tip of the iceberg of why that genre holds little appeal. With that said, G.L. Tomas are one of the rare few authors in this genre that I eagerly read and highly recommend.
I love it when sacred cows are turned into Angus beef patties. I enjoyed how complex and messy this story was. There's sex and drug use here. Not glamorize, just what a lot of young people do while in the process of growing up and figuring out what they want to do.
I really appreciated Teddy, as maddening as she was at times. This was a young woman living her life to the fullest, despite her illness. She isn't some pity party drama llama. And yes, she's flawed, but honest. And did I mention she's a total Black speculative fiction reader? Fangirl squee when she envisions herself as Lilith Iyapo from Octavia Butler's Lilith's Brood series.
Then there's Asher. Let me get this out of the way right now - he's bisexual. No, there's no slash fiction moments in the book. He's simply matter of fact about his attractions and he doesn't like labels. He digs on Teddy, despite the fact that his buddy Reggie has what seems to be a "are they or aren't they" running thing with the unpredictable yet gorgeous wild girl, Teddy King. Enough for him to violate the bro-code. Or has he? Asher's that sexy, skater type with tons of piercings who may shop at Hot Topic. But he's funny and sees through all of Teddy's games, though she frustrates the hell out of him.
Overall, F*THS is what happens when the idea of "friends with benefits" gets complicated. When wires get crossed. When people want different things. No slut shaming, and another dark-skinned afro-Latina. Representation to the nines. It's also cool to have the heroine be wealthy; there's enough poor little rich boys in books and that's boring.
I love reading G.L. Tomas's books because I can definitely relate to the characters. It's nice to see multi cultural main characters in a story. I love how they are average joes, taking the bus to work and living paycheck to paycheck. This is the third book I have read by this author and they keep getting better. Asher and Teddy. I loved this non couple and their vibe. Asher does like men but doesn't consider himself bisexual. I was expecting that to the thing that keeps them apart but I was wrong. The last half of the book had my heart in my throat. I don't want to give anything away but poor Teddy. I've had friends in her position and it sucks! I'm definitely going to buy the next book to see what happens with Asher and Teddy. If you are looking for something different and something a person of color can relate to, these books are for you!!
IN SUMMARY • Friends w/ benefits • Secret relationship trope • Afro-Cubana MC who loves to read • Both main characters aren't straight • Amazing banter + v. serious topics mixed together
I thought this book sounded interesting, so I was excited when I was offered a copy for review. The cover really appeals to me, and the premise sort of reminded me of the one for this book.
The setup was fun: a fun-loving rich girl (complete with a secret, of course) hooks up with a guy who's different from the others. Because this is NA, a genre full of dark secrets and people not like other people. These characters weren't insufferable like many of their contemporaries, but they did participate in TONSSSSSS of relationship drama. And the guys accusing Teddy, the female MC, of drama, were the ones perpetuating it the most. I wish there had been a few more side characters to help cut through this.
The writing was pretty good for a self-pub, with no obvious errors. But it still needed some polish. Scenes sometimes seemed to be incomplete. For example, Asher decides to go get a haircut on his day off. He mentions needing a haircut and that he has to be up early if he doesn't want a long wait. Then suddenly he's getting texts and responding that he's getting a haircut right at that moment, but it was never mentioned that he actually went to the barber shop.
I liked the Miami setting and the descriptions of Teddy's treatments. I also liked that Asher was considerate of Teddy when he wasn't busy being dramatic. I enjoyed it overall, and I actually really liked the cliffhanger ending.
A romance book steeped in reality that will have you in grossed from page 1
I have to admit that I am not an avid romance reader because what some may like in "unrealistic" meet cutes, billionaire bachelors, and pregnancy romances, those tropes are huge aversions for me & my tastes. Which is probably why I loved this book so much. I felt as if I was watching a couple meet and have real-life issues while trying to build a relationship . There are many times when I wanted to shake the hair when Teddy and get her to tell Asher her real feelings and what was going on . And there were just as many times as I wanted to fight Reggie with his selfish F – boy ways. All good signs because it means I was totally invested in the characters and them having a happy ending . I can't wait until the sequel comes out!
I also really like how the authors weaved in Teddy's love for black speculative fiction and that it was one of the ways that Asher showed that unlike Reggie he actually listened to her wants and needs.
If you're looking for a "diverse"/inclusive NEW ADULT ROMANCE that has an Afro – Latina main character , an African-American character , a white character , and two characters who are bisexual without it being a big deal ***no spoilers on which two*** , then this is the book for you.
Teddy is gorgeous, in your face and always down for a session from the outside, she seems to be your average good time girl, but due to dealing with cancer from adolescence onwards, she's so much more complex beneath the surface. Asher is a cool, really into weed and crazy about Teddy. He's got that pierced, tatted up swag but he's really a sweet guy. Their love story (maybe I should say 'friendship') is quite a complicated one, but as I'm finding with G. L. Tomas novels, I just need to sit back and enjoy the ride. This is definitely a book I would recommend and this is definitely (!!!!) one of my favorites from this author(I've already read it twice!).
It's honestly refreshing to read New Adult books that are just completely different. Nothing about this was predictable to me, or had any of the usual NA cliches. I kept wondering which direction this novel would go in, and with that cliffhanger at the end I'm still confused as to what will happen next. Anyways, I need y'all to know I LOVE TEDDY AND I'M ROOTING FOR HER SHE GOT THIS!!
I received this book as a ARC for an honest review and my goodness was it really good. But that cliffhanger was just wrong I was like oh heck no the didn't do that to me. But great job ladies I really enjoyed it.
Forgot this said that it ends on a cliffhanger. This is my second book by these authors and I see they quite like their triangles. I don't get sleeping with people and calling them friends but hey, to each their own.
I don't know (and don't want to know) people like this in real life but when I read Thomas' work I feel like I get to spy on the lives of people that would be too much for me in person. In short, this doesn't feel like writing. It feels like removing the fourth wall.
Everything feels very present, tangible, gritty, real-ish...especially the condition Teddy's battling. I'm left feeling a bit heavy but, again, good work to evoke such feelings. I also liked getting to know a little more about Miami through this book. Furthermore, the inclusion of Black woman speculative fiction authors and their books is excellent! I loved, as well, that Teddy was organically Black. And organically Afro-Cuban. From her easy mention of her hair, like it shrinking in the humidity despite the stretched style and her having to plait it before going to bed, to her being dark, curvy, and wondering if something Asher did "was a white thing", she was a genuine Black character. Her switching to Spanish in and out was great, also.
That said, there are a few copy editing errors that can be cleaned up. And I question the relative absence of Teddy's parents. Too, I wished this had come with a substance use warning. I cannot in anyway handle substances. I don't drink, have never smoked, and don't even consume caffeine. Drugs freak me out! I wouldn't have read this had I known. Yet, this is another element of realness to these people's lives and I can appreciate the unvarnished showcase of urban, NA living. So, now I'm off to the sequel. Good job having these on Kindle Unlimited.
Ps: the "Teddy" cover model is beautiful. Nicely done.
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free for an honest review. Thanks to NetGalley, Rebellious Valkyrie Press and G.L. Tomas.)
I was so bored while reading this. It was a huge disappointment to be honest. Like what the hell she was playing both of them. I mean just say no to one and move o. With the other one. Secondly, whole book was about drugs, and how good they make you feel, what is this going to teach youngsters? And the fact that she has cancer she could use as much drugs as she wants and do whatever she wants with anyone she wants and later blame others?! If you want to live don't use drugs, start to live healthy. This character was the one of the worst that I have ever read about, she was annoying needy and selfish, and just because she was sick that didn't make everything right. It was obvious she did not care about her health till it hot her hard and when it did everyone was wrong and she was right. And where the hell were her parents??? Your daughter has a cancer I mean the whole story was a mass an annoying and boring one.
Maybe I'm getting old, but I couldn't understand the dialogue. Sure, you want to connect with your readers, and using some modern slang helps keep you relevant, but not if it comes at the expense of alienating the majority of readers.
Book: F*THS Read By: Ebook and Audio Author: G.L Tomas Narrator: Aundrea Mitchell and Logan McAllister Genre: Romance and LGBT Main Characters: Teddy and Asher Recommend: Yes Spice: 🌶️️🌶️️ Age recommendation: 18-30+ Years My feelings:
“You should act like you’re with me. Dude at the bar can’t catch a clue.”
I didn't really enjoy that. It was a little bit boring and more internal monologue than actually story.
“I didn’t like the label bisexual, but I wasn’t gay and I wasn’t straight.”

F*THS by G. L. Tomas is a New Adult Romance and is Book One in a duology. The author continues to write stories that reflect society and diversity.
Teddy appears to have everything including but not limited to wealth, independence, strength of character to name a few. But as secrets are revealed via her point of view the reader discovers the reality of her life as she is battling cancer. Life becomes complicated when she meets Asher. Asher is friends with Reggie. Reggie has had a friendship with Teddy—simply, friends with benefits. Asher is instantly attracted to Teddy. He shares his feelings with honesty via his point of view. The triangle makes this a quick read.
The author has used slang to give the characters’ distinct voices. Text messages are woven into this novel to reflect the way in which people communicate today. The novel ends with a cliffhanger as Teddy and Asher’s journey is not over.
I received an ARC from netgalley and I couldn't be more happy that this book got to my hands!
New Adult is still a genre that I'm learning how to deal with but this book was just what I want to read about. The lives of these characters felt very realistic and as I am in my 20's it is so nice to read about.. Well, real problems of people who are my age.
The relationship between Asher and Teddy was really well developed and I felt myself cheering for them to finally get together. Also, Teddy is such an amazing protagonist, a truly refreshing female protagonist (loved reading about an afro-latina!) . I loved the diversity and the serious subjects in this book and how it brought so much more than just a love story.
I can't wait to read its sequel and find out how this story will end. I'm sure lots of people will love this book just as me and I'll be recommending to everyone who enjoys NA and good diverse books.
Blurb: If Teddy’s dark secret is discovered, even her wealth and good looks won’t save her. When Asher Rose met Teddy King, he knew it’d be trouble, but it was just the kind of trouble he didn’t mind falling in. 3.5 Stars Interesting and different premise from the standard NA formula. I didn't understand the connection between Theodora (Teddy) and Reggie. Book 1 of 2.
This book was a little on the boring side for me. Not a lot going on really.
Teddy has cancer and is basically a hoe because she doesn't think she will live long. Reggie is kind of a douchebag because it's all about him and he doesn't seem to care about anyone else. Asher is about the only character that I liked because he works hard and actually seems to care about how Teddy is.
The spice level isn't very high at all and I'm wondering if the next books gets better plot and spice wise.
There were a lot of great things about this book, its honesty, the character growth, the love—and the sex, yet overall, I really liked that the characters were able to remind me of my self, my friends, and parts of college I forgot about.
With the fluidity perspective (which best emulates the social conducts today) on the complicated borders of intimacy and relationships, I found that I was able to enjoy the book and story even more.
Teddy’s character is a seductive, sassy, tough-as-nails, Afro-Latina who is always bluntly honest with the people in her life. Her character takes advantage of each moment, day and breath of freedom she is able to get due to her condition.
Really loved that Teddy doesn’t just talk about the things she wants to do or who she wants to be with and when she wants to be with them. Teddy’s character (unforgivingly, and rightly, so) takes action, fully exercising her right to be explorative and adventurous with her coitus ;-)
Enter, Asher. The tall, tattooed, pieced sk8ter-boy and just as promiscuously amped as Teddy. And let me just tell you, sparks will fly between these two…then the flames from those sparks will ignite and before you know it, you’ll be completely engulfed, but that’s okay. I guarantee you won’t even care that you’re on fire, you’ll just want more. (this analogy got away from me a bit, but who cares?! XD )
The level of intimacy, which grows between Teddy and Asher, in this book is only measured by the level of relatable honesty and authenticity that will make you really connect with these characters. The venerability and fear Teddy shares with the reader—and ultimately Asher (to an extent)—instantly grounds you to her character and it might make you rethink the small gifts of life we might take for granted everyday and it’s humbling.
On a completely random note, I also adored the fact that Teddy’s petite frame constantly came up in the narrative XD. I basically live with a step-stool by my side, so I completely understand her plight. And from the dialect to the parties and the jokes, it kind of felt like I was back in school XD ; I found myself thinking about friends from college (even high school) and how a lot of what happens in this book—the sex, drugs, booze—I experienced or witnessed happen in real life.
Furthermore, I liked watching the slight changes in Asher and Teddy’s characters, as they grew closer to one another, but not dependent on each other. The one thing I will say is that it was heart wrenching and dramatically exciting to see the slips in communication between Asher and Teddy cause such speed bumps in their relationship.
It was like reading a soap opera or watching a Korean drama (with way better character depth) where the two leads were so close to each other, but kept seeming to miss one another. Infusing their unique exuberance into this New Adult/Romance concept, G.L. Tomas have created an emotionally gripping and raw story of life, love, sex, and friends with benefits with an unwavering level of honesty.
The angst level is strong with this one ☺ but Teddy and Asher worked well together as lovers and as friends, and I don’t know what is in store for them in the next book, but I’m so excited to find out.
F*THS Friends That Have Sex, Book 1 By: G.L. Tomas Narrated by: Aundrea Mitchell, Logan McAllister DNF Overall 2 out of 5 stars Performance 5 out of 5 stars Story 2 out of 5 stars Reviewed: 07-19-20
Great narrators but I couldn’t get into the story one bit. Not sure if it’s because the writing isn’t good, though. It’s probably more because I couldn’t relate to the characters, which seemed self-absorbed and stupid to me.
I will give a candid review in the spirit in which the book was written. I really loved that it was true to how people are today. I liked that they smoked up (A LOT!), like so many people do today. I loved the way they communicated with each other, so careful and nonchalant, like young adults do today... the hooking up without expectations, like people do today.
I admit that I am not crazy about Teddy. I find her a little too abrasive. But I know a lot of chicks like her. I feel like the only mature person in the book is Asher, who seems to have a handle on his emotions and expectations. Teddy was a bit... scratch that, she's a bitch! But you like her. Her having cancer kind justifies a lot of the way she is, but the truth of the matter is she's hooking up with a two friends... which is kinda...dumb? wrong? I'll go with both. I just feels like she needs to be straight with Reggie. SO in that respect, she's full of shit.
I HATE HATE HATE the cover! It looks ridiculous!! the baseball cap little white dude look like a 13 year old. No piercing or cool hair. And the chick looks like someone off the cover of a hair perm jar! Need to change the cover ASAP!!!
Looking forward to the conclusion!!! Way to go G.L Tomas!!

This is my first book with this author duo and F*THS is a fine introduction. I understand there are two parts to this story but at this time have only read this book.
Took me a while to get in to the rhythm of things and I do feel the romance skews toward a younger audience but I was entertained when reading it, for the most part. Teddy is an intriguing female protagonist but I feel like I need to read book two to get a better handle on her character whereas Asher's character I clicked with quickly. He's a tattooed slacker personality with simple needs and a good heart but is by far the most honest character in the story. Reggie I grew tired of early in the story with his games and shallowness.
There's a lot of back and forth & half-finished truths that I expect to be resolved in book two. That said, it's an entertaining book with a cliffhanger, so I would suggest getting both at once or reading back to back.
One I love interracial love matches....two.....I volunteer for many cancer organizations..... So the struggle was well defined, especially for younger characters......and the obvious love triangle just really made it real...believable and authentic...... Can't wait for part two.
Asher was extremely chill, caring, and hot. He struggles with his somewhat friendship and the guy code.
Teddy was a live every moment to the fullest chic. She knew that every moment of her life is precious due to her illness and she doesn't want to be completely alone.
Teddy's friend does come off as a jerk, but these characters are young and he is in a stage in his life where he is trying to literally find himself, though he maybe finds out too late that he is completely being an ass.
Overall, great read and I would love to have a chance to read book two.
The authors have done an amazing job with this book. The characters they have written are so incredible, so realistic, and the writing style itself is enjoyable and fresh. The plot is set in just the correct pace, which is another thing that made it impossible for me to put this book down. I loved it. I can't wait for the sequel., but in the meantime I'm definitely going to read everything else G.L. Thomas have written.
I received a copy from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
This was a good read. The storyline was funny, yet needed some work to enhance the story. The characters were good, and I enjoyed the way the Two main characters interacted with each other. However, I did not like that there was always drama surrounding their relationship. It made the story not as pure and authentic. Also, the ending could have been better. Overall, an okay read.
I received an ARC for an honest review. It was a good story. It's a short and quick read with a cliffhanger. I think the racial diversity was well done. The characters come to life and they deal with real life issues. Excellent read.
