Lady Eleanor Swift #4

Murder in the Snow

Rate this book
An English Christmas has mince pies, cheerful carols, a twinkling tree… and a murder? Thank goodness Lady Swift is on the scene!

Winter, 1920. Amateur sleuth Lady Eleanor Swift is feeling festive. She is playing host to the entire village at Henley Hall for gifts, games and gingerbread. She’s also purchased perfect presents for each of her household – not forgetting the biggest bone in the butcher’s shop for her partner in crime, Gladstone the bulldog – and is looking forward to celebrating her first English country Christmas.

As snowflakes fall, Eleanor is cheering on contestants in the traditional Christmas fun run in the grounds of the Hall. But tragedy strikes when one of the runners drops dead at the finish line. Dashing Detective Seldon is convinced it’s just a heart attack, but Eleanor isn’t so sure. When she finds a rather distinctive key where the man fell, Eleanor knows she’ll never rest until she finds out the truth about what happened in her own home.

Next the vicar is taken ill with what looks like poison and Eleanor starts to wonder if the two cases are linked. When someone tries to frame her by planting poisoned berries in her own kitchen, she knows speed is of the essence. But the entire village was at Henley Hall for the festivities and Eleanor has enough suspects to stuff a town full of turkeys. Can she nail the true killer and clear her name in time for Christmas?

Christmas won’t be complete without it! A festive treat for fans of Agatha Christie, TE Kinsey and Lee Strauss.

I am really enjoying this series and look forward to each new book as it comes out. They have such pretty covers too!

Lady Eleanor Swift is really growing into her role in society now and in Murder in the Snow she hosts a big Christmas event for the whole village. Of course someone dies in suspicious circumstances and Ellie and her faithful butler Clifford are obliged to investigate. The relationship between these two is wonderful and some of their dialogue is very funny indeed.

Great setting, interesting and fun characters and a good mystery all make this an excellent book. I was happy to see Ellie begin to sort out her love life although Detective Seldon is going to need to be a bit more proactive if their relationship is to go very far! At the moment he seems rather dull for the lively Lady Swift.

I am looking forward to the next book already!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review his book.

Put your feet up, take a sip of parsnip perry or chestnut liqueur, a slice of Christmas cake, a mince pie or a morsel of Stilton and transport yourself back to Christmas 1920 at Henley Hall, Buckinghamshire to the home of Lady Eleanor Swift. During the Christmas festivities at the Hall, Conrad Canning, the coal merchant dies .... Lady E and Clifford the butler investigate.

Oh the sheer joy of escaping these dark, Groundhog Day times in the company of these wonderful characters (especially Eleanor) and of course Gladstone the bulldog, who frankly steals the show ... and baubles.... and slippers .....! They all feel so vibrantly alive, they’re colourful and the storytelling is lively and entertaining. The period of time is captured well in these above and below stairs times (not that Eleanor places much store in that) and the language used is spot on, what! Oh it certainly is my old fruit. This is very much in the spirit of the mysteries of the era as the great teamwork of the intuition of Lady Eleanor and the knowledge of Clifford solves a twisty mystery.

Overall, a delightful, fun and entertaining read but try not to read when you’re hungry as I guarantee you’ll want to reach for the cake tin! If you like Christie or Dorothy Sayers then I think it’s well worth giving this novel a go. I love the cover too.

With thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the arc.

Such fun! As usual! It’s always a pleasure going back to Henley Hall and meeting once again Ellie, Clifford, Master Gladstone and cia. And it’s Christmas time so, what more could you ask for?

On her first year as lady of the manor, Lady Swift is playing host to the entire village at Henley Hall for Christmas Eve celebrations but, when one of her guests ends up dead during a race, she finds herself involved once again in a murder investigation.

Ellie’s character just keeps getting better and better. She’s strong, intelligent, helpful, down to earth and with a clever sense of humor. Now she’s more mature than when we first met her but without losing an ounce of charm. Her relationship with Clifford is one of love and mutual respect and they make a formidable team, both in and out of the investigation. It was nice to see how the other members of the household had a more important role in the story and I loved the little glimpse into her uncle’s past and how it linked with the current investigation.

The murder mystery was a good one and, although I called the killer I could not guess their motives.

Lovely series with a cast of endearing characters you can’t help but love.

This series is pure delight! The first page hadn’t been turned and I was already chuckling at Lady Eleanor Swift and Clifford’s jibes!

It was almost Christmas at Henley Hall and Lady Swift was continuing her uncle’s tradition of the townsfolk at the Hall enjoying the Christmas lunch, the activities and fun events. There was plenty of food and drink to be had by all, and gifts as well. Gladstone the bulldog wasn’t sure what was going on, but he was having a rollicking time. But when one of the guests dropped dead at the end of the fun run out in the snow, Ellie would stop at nothing to discover who murdered the man on her property.

With Clifford by her side, Lady Swift set to with her trusty notebook and pen, and the two bounced theories, questions and ideas off one another while travelling in the Rolls as well as drinking tea at the Hall. But was it too difficult this time around? Was the murderer too clever? After all, Lady Swift had been embroiled in three previous murders – she was slightly over the horrors of murder.

Murder in the Snow by Verity Bright is the 4th in A Lady Eleanor Swift Mystery series, and I loved it! This series is getting better by the book. Fun, entertainment, mystery, murders, good looking detectives, food and drink – what more could you want? Plus, I adore Clifford – stiff upper lip with a dry wit; he and Lady Swift get along famously. Murder in the Snow is a well written historical mystery that I highly recommend. I’m already looking forward to #5.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Favorite Quotes:

Indeed, the flames of fury do not necessarily diminish with time. Rather, time tends to feed them. Brooding over old injuries all too often leads to one result… Revenge…

I had no idea Christmas Day could be so exhausting… And I thought being a Lady of the Manor was all about languishing on chaise lounges and chiding the tradesmen!

Those eyes could melt a nun trapped in a glacier… I just meant that I can see why Canning did so well with the ladies, if all the stories are true. Not my type, but I can imagine in his day, Canning was quite the fox women would have howled at the moon over.

My Review:

I am continuing to enjoy this amusing series of historical cozy mysteries based in the early 1920s. The new and ongoing mysteries have been intriguing and unpredictable with characters who are unfailingly compelling, likable, and quirky. The storylines for Murder in the Snow were well-constructed and thoughtfully contrived with descriptive and wryly humorous insights and observations. This was a holiday season tale and felt more complex than the previous books with less romance and more sleuthing with her enigmatic and curiously fascinating butler.

Murder in the Snow is the fourth instalment in the Lady Eleanor Swift Mystery series, set in 1920s Little Buckford, Buckinghamshire. Amateur sleuth Lady Eleanor is about to experience her first Christmas as Lady of the Manor. Having inherited her late Uncle —Lord Byron Henley's— country estate along with his elderly bulldog, Master Gladstone, she decides to host a fabulous Christmas Eve party at Henley Hall to continue the traditions her uncle set. The whole village is invited to join in the festivities; there's the traditional fun run through the vast grounds of the Hall, delicious food, mulled wine, mince pies, gingerbread, mead and plenty of games. Everything is painstakingly prepared by butler Clifford and her other staff, all of whom are loyal to her. Everyone is excited as the fun run begins and entrants become incredibly competitive. Unfortunately, the fun doesn't last long as grumpy sailor turned coal merchant Conrad Canning seemingly suffers a heart attack and collapses and dies. Both Doctor Browning and DCI Seldon believe it to be a death by natural causes and put it down to a fatal heart attack brought about by the strenuous exercise, but Ellie isn't so sure.

Ellie and Clifford begin to investigate and when the local vicar, Reverend Gaskell, and his housekeeper, Mrs Fontaine, fall ill it surely can't be a coincidence... This is a compulsive and charming historical crime novel and a seasonal treat that immerses you in the joy of Christmas and lets you escape the current situation for a while. I get a lovely, warm, fuzzy feeling inside when reading Verity Bright's novels, and this one is no exception. In their efficient manner, Eleanor and Clifford team up to try to solve the case before it ruins Christmas. I loved that there was a touch of romance between Ellie and Seldon as it's been clear for a while that there's chemistry between them but only now have they both acknowledged it; it has me wondering how that will develop in future instalments. There are plenty of twists, a very festive feeling to proceedings and characters who are beautifully fleshed out and now feel as though they are friends. I adore this engaging and compelling series and the way each book just keeps getting better and better. A delightful, entertaining and atmospheric historical crime cosy. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

It was delightful to return to Henley Hall and meet Lady Eleanor Swift and the whole gang of quirky and witty residents once again and this time there was a Henley Hall Christmas bash to enjoy as well! Then there is yet another murder which this time occurs at Henley Hall during the festivities but Eleanor doesn't let that dampen the spirit of the season while she and her sleuthing partner/ butler in demand Clifford once again put their combined investigative skills to good use to solve the crime. I am also very hopeful for Eleanor and Detective Seldon….this is a pairing I am rooting for. As for Gladstone....ufff he is a force on four paws to reckon with! What a character!

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author Verity Bright for the e-Arc of the book. I had finished reading this book in one day in December itself and I apologise for putting up a late review.

The book was published on 19th November 2020.

Ellie, Clifford and Gladstone are back for another excellent mystery. Lady Eleanor is hosting Christmas festivities for the entire village when a runner in the annual Christmas race drops dead at the finish line. Was it a heart attack, or something more nefarious? You can be sure that Ellie and Clifford will find out the truth. An English Christmas, an intriguing mystery and wonderful characters made this another great entry in a favorite series.

Apart from Gladstone looking the cutest he's ever looked on the cover, wowee and I cannot believe how this author can keep it all up!

The suspense....

The mystery....

The characterizations....

The absolutely charming mystery-solving duo of Eleanor and Clifford!

And, of course, the twists and turns from where we start to where we end up!

Admittedly, that was the most surprising thing about this book! To clarify, what I mean is that it starts us off in what I would say is a relatively interest-less mystery, in that we don't really have a reason to care about the person who was murdered--and, quite frankly, no one else seems to either. The only reason that Eleanor even gets involved is because the murder actually happens on her property this time, and so she feels responsible for what happened right under her very nose.

As we progress through the mystery though, the stakes get higher for this one than for any of the other mysteries that Eleanor's solved so far--and yes, that is apparently possible, considering that Eleanor herself was a suspect earlier on, and you'd think that that's the highest that stakes could be, but N-O-P-E!--and therefore by the end everything is WAYYYYY more compelling at the beginning.

And, not to mention, the ending pretty much leaves it open for another important mystery to be solved, though of course the mystery in question might either be solved in the next book or over the course of several of the next books in the series.

Ahem, but, not to give anything away there.

Overall though, this was a delightful mystery with Christmas and wintry vibes (obviously!), and brings back Eleanor to her fullest advantage! Quick question though: We find out that emerald green and olive green shades are Eleanor's favourite colours, and yet I have yet to see her in those colour dresses on the covers of the books I've read so far. We'll see how long it takes, eh?

Also, on a non-mystery related note in terms of the story, .

Definitely looking forward to reading the next book soon--Mystery by the Sea.
And, seeing as it's summertime and all, the atmosphere will just suit!

Thank you to NetGalley for a free advanced review copy of this book. All opinions expressed in the review are entirely my own and not affected by the giveaway.

It's Christmas and Lady Eleanor Swift is excited and nervous about hosting the entire village and some of the next to a big 'do at her home. She is thankful for her small family of the ladies, Clifford and even naughty Gladstone to help see her through and share in the tidings of the season. Ellie even extends the invitation to curmudgeonly coal deliveryman Mr. Canning. He's surprised at the invitation. No one else has ever been kind to him. With the villagers drinking mead and enjoying the festivities, what can go wrong? Well, a sudden snow storm for starters and then a man dropping dead during the fun run. When Canning falls down during the run, Ellie tries to help but it's too late. The doctor isn't much help or sympathetic for Mr. Canning had a heart condition. Clifford fears Canning was murdered and in the same method as Ellie's uncle! Is the same person responsible? When the coroner dismisses Mr. Canning's death as an accidental overdose of digitalis, it's up to Ellie and Clifford to solve the mystery, if there is one.

This mystery didn't quite capture my attention. I figured out what happened right away. The villain was super obvious to anyone paying attention to who was where when. The motive, however, was a shock. I was surprised when Ellie didn't figure it out sooner. What I loved about this book is the charming Christmas celebration activities. I'm not sure about a fun run in 1920 but maybe? The internet says they started much later- in the 1970s and 80s. I also really loved the character development over the series and learning more about Uncle Byron and Clifford's secret past. I am not crazy about love triangles and I hope this one doesn't go on too long.

I have truly grown to know and love Ellie as the series has progressed. She's grown up a lot and come into her own. At first she had a chip on her shoulder and wanted to be anywhere except at the Manor. She was angry, fearful and ready to run but when she discovered a murder, she was persistent. Now Ellie has a home and a family she loves. She's endeared herself to many of the villagers in the area by her kindhearted and open approach to being lady of the manor. She's managed to understand their needs and institute some much needed reforms. What is really touching is Ellie's relationship with Clifford. He's more than a servant and more than a friend. Really, Clifford is a stand-in for the uncle she lost before she got to know him. Clifford sees Ellie as his to protect, picking up where her uncle left off, but I believe their relationship has grown in his heart as well and she's like a niece to him and not just someone to protect on behalf of her uncle. Clifford seems to care for Ellie for her own sake. I love his wry sense of humor and his devotion to Ellie's uncle. Ellie and Polly also have a special relationship. I love how Ellie educates the girl subtly, helping Polly grow in confidence. What happens to Polly here is terrible. It's obvious she's very young and not too bright. Ellie knows this and is sympathetic. She's willing to stand up for her friend. Trotters and Butters are charming but I get them confused. Hands-down, my very most favorite character is Gladstone! I kept squealing "He's SO CUUTTTEEE!!!!" throughout this whole novel. Yes he's naughty, but he's a spoiled dog. I like the naughty ones the best. Gladstone is more animated and shows more personality than he has ever before. I just want to sit next to him and rub his belly while he snores!

Mr. Canning is a curmudgeon, he's mean, nasty, selfish and doesn't give a care about anyone or what anyone else thinks. His actions in the past have been horrendous, yet he didn't deserve to be murdered. He's not quite a two-dimensional character. Something Ellie said resonated with him and made him pause to think. It also gave me an idea of what happened.

Constable Fry is a really nice man. He's kind and caring and does his job. Unlike the Inspector, he seems more open to possibilities. I also really liked Solemn Jon, the undertaker. He's just the opposite of his name and nothing bad affects him or his jolly mood. DCI Seldon is not the man for Ellie any more than Lancelot is. Seldon seems to care about her but he doesn't think outside the box, which is why she solves more murders than he does. He looks at the evidence but doesn't consider alternative solutions. He's too rigid and unbending for Ellie. Another character who appears in the story but isn't a suspect, is Mrs. Fontaine, Rev. Gaskell's housekeeper. She's hardworking and helpful. I think she seems dedicated to her employer. I think she knows more about Canning's past than she lets on though.

Main suspects include Dr. Browning, who is kind of cranky and reluctant to gossip. He has a past history with Canning that could have cost him his job. I'd say he's not the murderer. He's a doctor and he wasn't treating Mr. Canning at this point and if he was going to kill the man, why now? Rev. Gaskell, another nooo from me! Not the doctor or the reverend! I can't stand the idea of the most trusted people in the village being a murderer. Rev. Gaskell quotes from the Bible way too much for my liking. He seems kind but a bit absentminded. He isn't above losing his temper and it does seem like he could be guilty. Miss Moore, the florist, is a more likely suspect. A single mother, she's struggled her whole adult life since having her son Alvan. Her lover behaved abominably towards her and she's suffered for her actions. She has the motive and the means and was spotted around the victim at the time he would have ingested the poison. Her son Alvan is a more likely suspect. That man has a quick temper and spends a lot of time drinking. He seems kind of shady and up to something with the barmaid. Ellie's final suspect is a person unknown to her, a large, bearded man named Hubert Wraith who was seen arguing with Canning multiple times throughout the day he was killed. This man certainly could have been the murderer.

Returning characters include Lord and Lady Langham and Lancelot. I do not like Lancelot. He's still too childish for Ellie and as she notes, he doesn't understand why she was so offended by his behavior at the debate. His parents are nice but I think they wouldn't understand either. They spoil him. Their friends are also there at their New Year's party. The Dowager Countess is still nasty, Cora seems OK, Baron Ashley and his wife are sweet but the other couple are still sour. There wasn't much of them in this book. I liked seeing more of the villagers instead.

I look forward to another entry in this series. This series is perfect for Downton Abbey fans who also love cozy mysteries.

I love this series! It's fun, it's light, it's easy-reading and it never fails to charm and entertain me. A go-to for when I just want to enjoy myself.

Lady Swift is wonderful. She's smart and spunky, kind and determined, and I love that she is also independant. She gets herself into trouble, but she very often also gets herself OUT of trouble too. The fact that she's a strong woman who can take care of herself is a big draw for me.

I also adore the supporting cast of charaters who surround Lady Swift. Especially Clifford the loyal butler, but all the people at the estate Elena's inherited from her uncle are fun and likable. And Gladstone the bulldog, well I just adore him!! The dog has some absolutely adorable scenes in every book and since my family had a bulldog too, that is one of my favourite things about this series.

Format note: I get these books on audio, and the narrator is wonderful! She does an excellent job bringing all the characters and their personalities fully to life through her narration. If you like audio books, I highly recommend this series on audio.

I really love this series and plan to continue going along on Elena's continuing adventures.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Murder in the Snow, the fourth novel set in Buckinghamshire to feature 1920s amateur sleuth Lady Eleanor Swift.

When Conrad Canning drops dead during the fun run, part of the festivities at Lady Eleanor’s Christmas Eve party for the villagers, she isn’t so sure that it’s the heart attack both the doctor and DCI Seldon think it is and is determined to investigate. When the vicar and his housekeeper are also taken ill her suspicions are fully aroused.

I thoroughly enjoyed Murder in the Snow which is a fun read with a good mystery attached, i.e. I had no idea of the perpetrator’s identity. This is the first novel in the series that I have read but it won’t be the last. I loved that it is told entirely from Lady Eleanor’s point of view as it means that there are no distractions and the reader knows what she knows, nothing more and nothing less. There are plenty of suspects as Canning was not a nice man and plenty of motives as he’s a man with a past. The solution comes out of left field although the clues are maybe there if the reader looks hard enough.

The real pleasure in the novel comes from Lady Eleanor’s character and her relationship with her butler, Clifford as he’s more minder and mentor than butler. It is a fun relationship with amusing dialogue and situations.

Murder in the Snow is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

A cozy mystery set in 1920s England has just the right stuff to put you in a festive mood for the Christmas season.

Lady Eleanor Swift is hosting the entire village at Henley Hall for all sorts of frolic and food as she celebrates her very first country Christmas. Unfortunately, a participant in the fun run set up on the grounds of the Hall dies at the finish line. Of course this was not a natural death as Inspector Seldon believes and Lady Eleanor and her butler and partner in crime, Clifford, set out to prove it was murder. NO SPOILERS.

I enjoyed reading about Eleanor's yuletide activities along with her amateur sleuthing. She and Clifford are a great pair and their interaction is often hilarious. She's a fun character and I had no problems following along even though I missed the third in the series. I am looking forward to the next installment. May your holidays be merry and bright -- and healthy.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend.

Having tried to read - and abandoned - several modern takes on Golden Age crime recently, my hopes were not particularly high for Murder In The Snow. But to my surprise I found myself actually enjoying it quite a bit. It would make perfect reading for fans of Robin Stevens' Wells & Wong series: while this is aimed at adults, there's nothing in it that would particularly alarm younger readers, and Lady Eleanor - with her habit of making lists of suspects and pushing against the gender mores of 1920s society - reminded me of a delightful amalgam of Daisy and Hazel. While the period details may not always be wholly accurate, they are tackled significantly better than in other attempts at Golden Age pastiche I have read, and the festive touches make this the perfect, undemanding yet heartily enjoyable book to curl up with by a fire this Christmas.

*4.5 “BOTHERATION” - the first word this story starts with and my new favourite word! ^.^
Look no further if you want a 1920’s (the fashion!) cosy, comforting, crime fiction read. First book that I’ve read in this series and I’m now a fan. It didn’t matter that I hadn’t read the previous books in this series. Like friends catching up, everything was well explained to the reader. I love the relationship between the butler, Clifford, and Lady Swift. He’s so protective and always about 20 steps ahead of her ^•^

This is the second book I read in the series and I'm just so glad I did. While I found Lady Swift an endearing and intelligent women in the previous book, it felt like she came into her own in this one. Her relationships with the aristocracy, her household and her community are maturing and the result is delightful.

The savvy Lady Swift and the butler are able to host the most amazing community Christmas party and then go onto resolve the murder mystery. It was a goodie and while I was headed in the right direction, an unexpected twist meant a surprise at the end.

It definitely makes for a lovely Christmas read for anyone who enjoys a cozy murder mystery. I have great expectations of the next one. Great Job Verity Bright!

My Review:

This is another superb cosy murder mystery featuring Lady Eleanor Swift and her intrepid butler and supporter, Clifford. The repartee between these two had me laughing out loud despite the somber nature of their investigations, and Gladstone is as stoic as ever!

Eleanor inherited her title following the tragic death of her uncle and the disappearance of her parents. She’s spent her years on adventures around the world and hasn’t been brought up to be Lady of the manor but she’s endeavouring to fulfil the role with the guidance and protection of Clifford. This isn’t the first time this pair have investigated a murder but they’d certainly never expected one to be committed during the first Christmas Eve party hosted by Eleanor for the local villagers. The police don’t seem to be too interested in what happened though Detective Seldon isn’t totally ruling out foul play. However, the victim doesn’t seem to have anyone who’ll miss him but just who killed him – and why? As more people are poisoned and incriminating evidence planted, can this duo identify the killer and bring them to justice?

This is such a fun read with great characters, plenty of suspects to confuse you, red herrings to distract you and a touch of romance to sweeten it all. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie and Vivian Conroy mysteries also set in this era.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

Another entry in the entertaining Lady Eleanor Swift series. Ellie was a worldwide adventuress and traveler before inheriting her uncle's estate and settling down in the British countryside. She doesn't much conform to society's idea of a Lady, but she is smart and good-hearted and determined and she is easy to like. Assisted by her late uncle's servant/friend Clifford, she keeps getting embroiled in mysterious murders.

Although it would be nice to have the background from the previous books, I imagine this would be fine as a standalone. This time out, during the manor's gift luncheon and fete for the village, a cranky and much disliked resident drops dead after the footrace. A heart attack is suspected, but it turns out to be murder. There are a pool of suspects, including some of Ellie's servants, so she and Clifford conduct their usual efficient investigation.

The ensemble cast is fun, and Ellie and Clifford's exchanges are enjoyable. Thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

What fun! The series begins as a farce: presumed orphan from South Africa comes to rural England and finds that she has inherited the title and all that from uncle who is recently deceased. She has little idea of how people are expected to behave in this milieu and is a klutz, to boot. The best part of it all is the Butler who knows everything, helps her with anything, and never treats her like a ninny. Now it is Christmastide and she works with her staff to provide the estate and the village with the kind of celebrations that her uncle had always done. Everything and everyone is quite happy until a crabby middle-aged man drops dead at the first community event. Eleanor and her butler are certain that it is murder, but the friendly law enforcement do not, and are very annoyed when she keeps on snooping as the snow gets deeper and deeper. Loved it! A nice, low key cosy for these fraught times.

This is the fourth book in the Lady Eleanor Swift mystery series by Verity Bright.

It is Christmas and Lady Eleanor is very generous with her staff which doesn’t seem to be the norm with others of her ilk. And that is just a sad fact of the times.

During a fun run, one of the participants ends up dying. And Lady Eleanor is immediately on the case with her loyal driver Clifford who is always a hoot to watch. That guy just makes these books sing!

As I said in my last review for book three, I was looking for some falling in love time in this book and it just didn’t happen. I had been told by another reader that this would turn the page away from Lady Eleanor and toward Eleanor and our favorite detective inspector. But I just didn’t find that to be the case. Seldon does get pulled into her case but not to the extent I was hoping for.

Loved so much about this book. If you like historical cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

Before starting the book I was hoping to see more of Eleanor’s ‘normal’ life rather than almost immediately getting into a murder investigation. I really like Eleanor as a character and the way she interacts with people, fortunately we get quite a lot of Eleanor in this book.
As for the murder and investigation I don’t think the author does this as well. In this story the police make such ridiculous decisions and when the perpetrator was revealed I wasn’t surprised, but reasons just came out of nowhere.
If possible I would have given 3.5 stars, but I like Eleanor so much I have increased this to four.

Lady Eleanor is about to host her first Christmas party at Henley Hall. The decorations and food are aplenty for the invited villagers living near the estate. As the festivities begin, spirits are high as the guests enjoy the holiday treats and festive ambiance. A race around the snowy estate puts everyone in a cheery mood, until one of the final runners drops dead at the finish line. Is it a tragic accident, or is foul play lurking behind the Christmas tree?

Lady Eleanor soon finds that all is not as it seems as the vicar succumbs to what appears to be a poisoning. With an investigation led by Detective Seldon, will Eleanor and her trusted butler, Clifford, help sort through the clues before more evil deeds are unleashed? Author Bright weaves a clever, holiday tale to read on these chilly, winter nights. The characters, settings and plot twists are a delight and will keep you guessing. A festive mystery, highly recommended!

DNFed at 38%. This is a 257 page book and a murder mystery, it shouldn't be taking me over a week to read. I hadn't picked this up for 5 days and decided to give it one last shot, but the line "I so did not use the word disappointed" completely took me out of the story which is set in 1920. I don't even care enough to keep reading to solve the mystery. The only thing keeping me entertained has been the dog, but unfortunately that's not enough to keep me going.

This is a review about the series as a whole, rather than a specific book review about each book.

I am enjoying this series somewhat. I do find somethings rather frustrating at times, but overall, I like how things are developing through the whole series and I do want answers to certain questions that still have to be answered. It's a pleasant, not taxing on brain way to spend a couple of hours.

Eleanor. Right. She does not read as a 28 something woman, who eventually hits her 30's as the series progresses. Her character background doesn't fit the character we are presented with. I know she has been somewhat spoiled and is pampered, but she reads as a teenager to me, especially as all her exploring should've made her more mature. She has been travelling the world for 10 years alone. I repeat, travelling alone as a woman in the 1920's. That wouldn't have been easy and you'd need your wits about you. It's not like she's been locked in a manor for 15 years and is finally being released into the world alas Rapunzel. I also find her general horniness, both hilarious and frustrating, especially when she's falling for people she's just met and having romancey moments at the most worst times when she should be focusing on something much more serious. Though I do know it's part of her character that she falls hard over nothing and has a habit of rushing into romances with people she barely knows. She knows this about herself, yet does it anyway, she never really grows in this respect througout the story. I also didn't like that she turned into blushing, awkward giggling girl around males she finds attractive. It's stereotypical and once again, it's reminisce of a teenager. You'd think at 28, you can be around an attractive male and be fine. Most woman I know can. She just doesn't come across as a 28-30 year woman to me. I do sigh when she's like a bull in a china shop where a delicate hand was needed. She sometimes makes life hard for herself though once again, I know that's one huge part of her character traits, but she can come across quite rude at times. But I don't dislike her and I don't mind having her as the main character, I do wish we would have some more character growth within the story though.

Also, I know talk of food is a somewhat part of the cozy genre, but it gets tiring that Eleanor eats six heavily calorie meals a day, yet always keeps her figure. It's unrealistic and is a pet peeve of mine, as it's a mythical dream that is used as a stick to beat woman with when they can't achieve it.

I really like Clifford (despite the grating chivalry misogyny and being all proper which can get tiring. And I dislike how he's always reminding the ladies that because Eleanor has a title, that means she's better, worth more and special than them. All people are equal on the whole. A title doesn't mean much in this day and age. I know it's somewhat suitable/normal for the time period, but I think the authors can easily not focus and push this specific idea as much as they do. I know Clifford truly believes that she's better but it's getting old, especially when he pushes it on the staff several times a book.) and the rest of the staff though Clifford should be a bit easier on them, haha. I mean, they're doing several peoples worth of work a day by themselves. And one of them is 15 and started working at 11. (Imagine having an 11 year old as a maid/cleaner/everything else.) Dude doesn't know how to relax and chill. And Gladstone is my favourite. He's a cutie and I love his addition to the story. He makes a cute, fun aspect to the books with his charming personality of constantly stealing shoes and his penchant for digging.

General Discussions about the series as a whole, including my thoughts on Hugh so probable minor spoilers;
