The ongoing antics of Iruma and friends have quickly become one of my favourite cozy reads. There’s very rarely a volume that leaves me disappointed, so it’s predominantly a question of how good it’ll be.
Both the first two chapters here are gloriously fun and silly - I am a huge fan of Ameri and Iruma together in any capacity and seeing them trying to bake because of shojo manga is an absolute hoot.
It really comes together because rather than just Ameri being awful at baking, a cliche I expected, Iruma is just as bad, but for different reasons. This leaves Opera to pick up their pieces and it’s one of the best uses of Opera to date. It’s an amazing opener.
The second volume is about Iruma and Lied hanging out and bonding and I love how the two of them have bonded after the last big story arc. It’s no huge plot, just solid character work and some silliness to carry it along.
So it follows with the next two chapters, as we check in on all the major cast members and set some future stuff up. It’s aggressively infused with the usual fun. By this point I am invested enough in the characters to just bounce along and enjoy it (hopefully Kalego finds love too!).
The next big arc ends up involving music and the one member of the Misfit Class, Purson, who has been so far into the background that he might as well not exist. Which was deliberately done and pretty clever.
There are a lot of intersecting arcs in this one, with Purson wanting so badly to be his own person, yet his literal ability to blend in and his familial obligations need him to stay as unnoticed as possible.
Yet that’s also a real issue when it comes to ranking up and the whole class needs to achieve a certain level or they’ll lose access to their sweet homeroom. Which means everybody is on Purson to do something, largely for their own reasons. There’s a great depiction of being socially overwhelmed in this that I felt in my soul.
I appreciate that Iruma, when he gets to talk to Purson, manages to not lie about keeping the room being a factor. Yes, he adds in his usual thoughtful stuff, but it makes it more believable that he’s not entirely altruistic.
When Purson does talk, he speaks at breakneck speed and also performs some hilarious takedowns of the other students in class. It’s all really well done for mostly set-up and quickly turns Purson into a strong character for this plotline.
We’ll see how it all goes; the way these arcs tend to go is pretty basic at this point, they always succeed and the odds are always terrible, but the general vibe and messaging win me over every time.
4.5 stars - it’s really peak Iruma-kun and, even if the whole music festival doesn’t necessarily excite me, it’ll be fun seeing what happens.
A really funny reveal when the Misfits realize they had a 13th classmate the whole time. This reveal fits in so well because once they reveal who he is and what his power are is so funny and it makes so much sense. It is such a good way of introducing/reintroducing a character as it fits in without it being a retcon.
maybe I’ll rate 5/5 for all volumes of this manga 😭🫶🏼 Love all the member of Misfit Class so much! ❤️ I was as surprised as they were. There is a classmate of theirs who has never been noticed so far, namely Purson Soi. He's so cute, I thought he would be cool and quiet. Turns out, he's a certified yapper, but it's hidden because of his family's strength and tradition 😂
These characters have really grown on me, man. I can’t wait to see the Hell Dance performed in season 3, because the only resources I had to envision the song was the classical music I played in the background while reading this. Also, Purson Soi, haha.
I really like seeing Lied care for Iruma and Clara. I truly enjoy seeing Iruma's friendship with his classmates, especially the differences. His friendship with Lied exudes more of a brothers-kind of friendship. They treat each other as equals and that's refreshing from the overly loyal and protective Azz and Clara who looks up at Iruma.
Chapter 145, The Teachers' Banquet, is also one of my favorite chapters in the entire series. It's so fun to see the adults perspective from time to time and them enjoying as well. I also really like seeing Shichiro and Kalego's friendship! And Shichiro growing out his hair was so hot!
Anyway, I'm so excited for the music festival and to see more of Purson Soi.
