Mateo and Raina were absolutely delicious together. I was so looking forward to their book after Vee and Sotza's book. Born a Queen was sexy, fierce and addicting and I was hooked from the start.

However, while I loved their story, there were instances where Mateo was a little too much for me.  His personality was borderline extreme at times where I felt he was mean to Raina out of nowhere. Now, anyone who knows me knows I like my heroes the MEANER the better but his personality was almost erratic at times. (I.E. the random af bunker scene.) Don't get me wrong. It was great but it was also inexcusable. It just came out of nowhere. Likewise, she forgave him SO fast. I hate to say it but Raina was also a little too passive and timid for me as she gave in so easily. I would have hoped she would have been more like her mother. I also felt like she capitulated so easily over the idea of children that I got whiplash. It was disappointing.

Overall, while I could never doubt Mateo and Raina's love for one another, there were instances in this book I did not love. 3.5 stars! ~Ratula

Was really looking forward to this one but unfortunately I found the characters a bit too bland. Heroine was annoying and honestly did some really stupid things that I wondered what the H saw in her. I felt the premise had so much potential but the characters just lacked chemistry, their relationship seemed more like an indulgent parent and child rather than the sizzling passion I was expecting. Not the worst book but def not one of my favourite by NS either!

Born a Queen is an action-packed and sexy story and another fantastic addition to The Queen's series. Nikita Slater brings her unique spin on the mafia world with this story of a man determined to catch the woman who has become his greatest obsession.

"I will fuck you every day from here until one of us dies. That is the only way you will ever escape me."

This author is so good at writing lovable heroines and heroes who are intensely fixated on them. Mateo and Raina had a great connection with a fierce push-and-pull dynamic between them. Raina was determined not to be caged and Mateo was determined to keep her safe at all costs. He was possessive and protective to the point of obsession, and I loved how she was the only woman for him. He was a hunter and she was his prey.

"He had such an air of unleashed violence about him that anyone standing in his vicinity would immediately sense the danger."

There were some dark moments between them, but it wouldn't be a Nikita Slater book if it didn't have that dark intensity that straddles the line between right and wrong. Both of them struggled to adapt to the other, but I really enjoyed the way they balanced each other out. Raina was the light to Mateo's dark, and they battled each other in a way that built and solidified their relationship. Their interactions were always exciting and full of tension, and the sexual energy between them was so well written.

"I was born to worship you, just as you were born to belong to me. Whatever comes our way, we will always deal with it together."

This story was high in suspense and action, which balanced really well with the romantic elements. It was fast paced and thrilling and had all of the things I love in a dark romance. I loved seeing Vee and Sotza again, and they definitely added another layer of enjoyment to the book. This is another great story in this amazing series and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book.

H - He was a rich, successful, JP anti-H. He was also a mafia boss and a very controlling alpha. He was pretty obsessed with the h and with protecting her. He made decisions regarding her safety and health without consulting her.
h - A beautiful, young, naive virgin who was somewhat immature. This was to be expected because she led a very sheltered life. She was adopted, raised by doting parents and grew up on a farm. She also had been through a lot in her life having experienced kidney failure and a kidney transplant when she was young.
3rd person dual POV’s
J/P - Yes but it felt delayed due to the story. He was OTT but there weren’t many JP scenes.
sex - Steamy and delayed.
Triggers - H rapes h. There was no seduction involved until after penetration. The h does orgasm.
No cheating, no OW/OM
HEA w/epilogue
Things I did not care for in the story: see end of review.

The premise: The h (Raina) was the daughter of a woman (Vee from book 2) who was a former mafia boss before her marriage to a powerful, ruthless and greatly feared, cartel King (Sotza). The h had been given up for adoption by Vee with the hope that the she would have a good life and be protected. When the h (Raina) was in college, the H (Mateo) was sent by Sotza to collect her. Mateo took one look at her and was gone. He wanted her and was able to receive Sotza’s word that she (Raina) would be his. (This happens in book 2.). Due to the h’s age, the H decides to give her 2 years to grow up, see the world and have some freedom before claiming and marrying her. So for two years, the H watches over her from afar biding his time. Born A Queen begins at the end of the two years when the H goes to collect her.

"You don’t need to be shy with me. Every part of you is my definition of beauty” - Mateo

Hey, let me just start by saying that I usually love Ms Slater’s books. But this one didn’t work out with me, unfortunately...

The story follows Raina (the female MC) as she’s valiantly trying to live her life and explore the world without her mafia family hindering her freedom. She’s been ‘running’ for the past two years, knowing that Mateo (the male MC) would find her if she stayed still in one place for too long. Little did she knew that he had been aware of every little step she took...

This book was portrayed as a dark romance. I was so, so excited to read it, since I’m a right sucker for the genre.

It all started great. The book opens smack dab in the middle of some action which kept me engrossed. The dark shit that I love showed from the very first chapter:

He bent over and pressed his lit cigar into Garza’s now empty eye socket, putting it out. God forbid he start a fire and be forced to leave before his job was completely done.

I read that, and I was cackling like a disney villain (which may or may have not disturbed family members in the vicinity...). I was so happy to find this book.

And then it all goes to shits.

Raina has the amazing idea (hope you read the sarcasm there) to go to Giovanni, an ENEMY mafia boss, for protection. Enemy - Protection. Those two words do not match, girl!

But what is even more surprising (and unrealistic) is that Giovanni likes her on sight (of course he does, God forbid characters in books don’t like the female MC). He takes her to his home - the actual home where his family grew up and that contains his office and other important, private matters.

We are told Giovanni is cold and ruthless. By being the boss of the Italian Mafia, you can easily guess this man is hella experienced in all kinds of matters, and he’s alive to prove it. So why in the heck, may I ask, he allowed Raina (the daughter of a rival Mafia boss) into his home without reservations? Didn’t Giovanni think for even one second that she could have been a trap? A spy to infiltrate his mansion? An assassin?

No, of course not. We are given some bullshit excuse that her personality and vitality reminds Giovanni of his late wife, so that automatically makes her an innocent angel. Of course. How stupid of me. Next time I should just follow Sensei Giovanni without questions, since he’s the experienced Mafia boss here.

So Raina and Giovanni strike a ‘friendship’ of sorts within 2.5 seconds. He even asks for her opinion for his (and his men’s) safety:

Giovanni thought about it for a couple of seconds, turning the problem over in his mind. He turned to Raina. "What do you think, my dear? Do you believe that Gutierrez and his people will shoot up my club?"
Raina blew out a breath and thought about it. This question, her answer, it was a big responsibility.

A big responsibility?? I was laughing so much at the idiocy of that sentence. She’s a stranger. He’s a stranger. They’re enemies, for God’s sake! They’ve talked with each other for barely a couple of hours, and now they’re all chummy and sharing opinions?? How is that scene even happening?

Then the action ends, Mateo manages to retrieve Raina, and it goes even more downhill from then. I swear the middle of the book was just filler. I must admit to skimming some chapters because nothing happens. I was expecting some hot and dirty romance, but Mateo acts like a monk, so the best we got was some lukewarm kisses every now and then. Very disappointing stuff.

Then, it goes from 0 to 100. Randomly, in a random chapter, in a random scene, after a random conversation, he rapes her. It took my mind some time to catch up because, again, it was just random.

Raina huffs and puffs and is angry for (maybe) one chapter. She promises to kill him. She screeches about how she will never stop trying to escape. She cries, but doesn’t cry (yeah, that was confusing for me too).

Then, a random fight happens where the antagonist tries to kill her.

Then, Raina suddenly becomes all huggy and smoochy, spouting ‘I-love-you’s and looking forward to the rest of her life with Mateo. The rape is not mentioned at all. Kinda forgotten.

I was scratching my head. I honestly flicked pages back, trying to see if I missed a chapter or two.

Nope. That really happened. Ok then.

I wish the situation had been resolved better and more realistically. What a shame.

P.S.: what was that scene with Raina barking about animal rights?? She was so adamantly spouting how humans shouldn’t use animals for their pleasure, how she’s not an hypocrite, blah blah blah... Then literally the next day she’s happily wearing leather cowboy boots and liking how they’re sparkling? Or were they fake leather? I don’t remember reading that, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt...

I cannot get enough of this series. Just when I think Nikita can’t do any better, she blows it out of the water. The chemistry between Mateo and Raina is so electrifying I’m surprised my iPad didn’t combust when I read their story. I thought Reyes was an alpha, he’s got nothing on Mateo. I love how Raina stands her ground against Mateo’s dominating personality and how he can knock her off her feet with his romantic side. This book kept me on the edge until the very last page, I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series.

I loved this book. I enjoy strong independent heroines, with which Raina identifies. Mateo has waited on the sidelines watching and waiting to bring his bride home. Mateo's purpose in life is monster boss and protector of Raina. She proves she is not a fragile person to wilt at the first exposure of vulnerability. There are many super hot panty - melting scenes, violence and angst. Mateo and Raina are perfect for each other.

DNF @ 30%.

The h is a complete donkey. She could be anything but wants to do forgery. She abandons her foster family to live dangerously and then just shows up back in their lives. So what is the first thing she does upon returning to her family; go to a honky tonk to dance. It was so absurd.

IT WAS SOOOO BAD. I very liked the the first and the second book of the series and I read other books from this author so I do know her style BUT this book was a disaster. First of all the story was boring, the first half there was something happening at last in Italy but when the story shifted in Miami nothing very interesting happened until the end. Mateo is supposed to be this badass but he's just stupid because the antagonist had it too easy. But the most important fact is the fucking RAPE that happened and what... nothing like yeah it's bad but poor him he's so stressed WTF?! SERIOUSLY 👿 and the randomness of it is mind-blowing and the explanation like I
need to hurt you to put you in your place but love you girl it's for your good. It's not love it's freaking abuse.

Awful. just no. I am well aware that the genre of this author is dark romance and the lines are often blurred but the execution of it was so much well executed in the precedent book.

3.5 stars

I have loved the other books in this series but really struggled with this one. Certain things weren't discussed again, even though they should've been, like how Raina lost her virginity. Other times seemed cheesy and didn't have the same vibrancy that the previous books had. I never connected with the characters like I wanted to not did I feel like they truly had a love connection. Had it not been for the action scenes and Giovanni, I'm not sure if if this would have even gotten 3.5 stars.

I am a huge fan of this author and all her hard work, even though this was not my cup of tea. I look forward to the next book.

Fantastic

Love the Queens series. Each one is has is a totally different aspect of what a mafia wife might be. Loved Raina and her acceptance of this life style while still remaining true to herself. Mateo was atypical alpha male but oh so sexy . You won’t be disappointed in this instalment to the Queens. This story had everything, plot, betrayal, angst, love and family. Read it now!

I waited what seemed like forever for this book!
I have been invested in Raina and Mateo life.
I love how Raina doesn’t let her issues get in the way of being adventurous. She knows her limits and boundaries.
Mateo good lord is all alpha and protective. He takes and gives.

Bravo!! I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

did NOT like MMC - he wasn’t possessive but abusive, the way he would treat the fmc changed at the drop of a hat. fmc was way too forgiving, especially after being set up as such a rebel.

Born a Queen from Nikita Slater is an unexpected treat from the first page turn up to the last.

If you've read her before, you know that she doesn't shy away from writing dark romance. However, with this latest release, she managed to insert quirkiness and romance but still with her widely known dark elements writing-style wise.

The book will reconnect you to the Queen's Move characters that introduced us to both main characters of this book. Raina (heroine) is the daughter of the former Miami boss, Elvira/Vee and now the wife of Isaac Sotza aka The Butcher. She will be testing Mateo's (hero) patience and sanity. Mateo has been obsessive and possessive of her since they're "first meeting".

I admit I was expecting for Mateo's takeover in the whole of Miami to be the main focus but plotwise, the story was more on the building relationship between both main characters. In a way, this worked out really good for the story because you get to know the characters more and see how they struggle with their day to day lives and so the author managed to give you a different take with her underground romance. (Don't be fooled though, there's still tons of underground-theme in this book)

However, it wasn't all romance as former enemies will resurrect and will cause them problems along the way.

Overall, the author did a great job keeping up with character appearances and story arc for the whole series (though this can be read as a standalone but I highly suggest reading Queen's Move first for full experience) and providing a continuous storyflow that will make you salivate for the next installment. This book (really, all of this author's books) is a great example of a 'dangerous romance' you don't want to miss!

This book is definitely worth the wait! ♡

DNF @ 49%

Never bothered to try and read this one again. Ended up reading the next book which answered everything I needed to know about what I missed by not finishing it so gonna mark it as read.

2 Stars (for 49% so far)

Hm, I was anxiously awaiting the release of this book and yet somehow even as I reached 40% I was left feeling underwhelmed? A little bored? Impatient for something exciting, sexy or actiony to happen? Hard to say. Up to this point I know I'm all for Mateo and getting to dig more into his personality. That's not the issue.

As for Raina, well I'm not sure. It's not that I don't like her but I can't say for certain that I care about her thoughts or feelings. I didn't enjoy being in her POV majority of the story. Maybe it was her younger personality and she comes from a more average/normal lifestyle than Vee or Casey? Or maybe I find her inner thoughts and opinions exhausting, contrary, indecisive and stubborn?? I don't know. I expected her to be stubborn and bullheaded, of course! That's the theme with the heroines of this series when it comes to butting heads with the ultra possessive alpha men who claim them. So not surprising but somehow with Rainia it's grating on my nerves.

And up until 40% it literally feels like nothing has happened worth talking about. Some traveling, a brief gun fight or two, some country two stepping and welp that's it? To me it just feels so mundane. It doesn't fit the style of Nikita's previous Queen series IMO. I know things will pick up and already see (obvious) hints of a loose end gunning for Mateo already. The point I guess I'm trying to make is the author wrote a lot about silly light things I don't think I cared about. All sorts of details about what this room or house looked like, exactly what Raina was wearing and what makeup she chose to use. And so on. It felt like filler to me and maybe I was tired when I began reading this book but I was skimming through some of this because I didn't care TBH.

I expected this to be a slower burn and that's fine but honestly I'm just bored. So maybe I'll find it in me to finish this at a later date. ☹️

I love Nikita and her mafia books. I'm a firm believer (unless proven otherwise) that she herself is a mafia queen--THATS how well she writes these books. She does her research on everything (Italian, Bratva, Cartel, etc), to the foreign languages, the geography and culture. Best of all, she rarely has any errors in her writing and it always flows, never choppy. That being said, this wasn't one of my favorite books. The characters just had no chemistry and fell flat to me. Raina was a little TSTL with her reckless ways and her mouth and she refused to learn the mafia world or accept certain things about it so much so that I, as her spouse, would've cut her loose because I couldn't hover over her 24/7 and do my job. Mateo was a jerk, above and beyond, completely unreasonable, impatient, and a little clueless for someone who has worked under The Butcher for 20 years. Let your new wife bring in a random decorator with no checks? Forget that Desi got away when you were supposed to kill her because she wasn't a threat? (thats too stupid. he's experienced enough to know she would avenge her lover). When your wife says a stranger was in your room uninvited you don't check for bugs? cameras? a freaking bomb? NAH. Then, there was his personality and attitude toward his bride. There was literally nothing he offered that they could build a relationship on.
Honestly, I had to stop and start this book with force. Casey is a Queen, Vee is a Queen, but Raina and Gina are not & I feel like they are more a hindrance to their men's positions than anything.
I love Nikita and her writing so obviously, I will keep reading and bragging, but I just won't reread this book.

Thrilling to the very end!

WOW! This story was thrilling from the very beginning right to the very end! It kept me on the edge of my seat with anticipation of what would happen next. Raina and Mateo's story is rife with anger, hostility, murder, mayhem and a whole lot of steam. Their story is an emotional roller-coaster ride of love and hate. There is so much push and pull between these two, which will eventually make them a fierce couple in the end.

Raina is smart, witty, fierce and very independent. Mateo is angry, broody, fierce and the ultimate alpha protector, making him one fierce and angry beast to contend with. Mateo only has Raina's best interests at heart and he will do anything to protect her. Even though Raina might find his ways stifling, she grows to love her beastly protector.

The chemistry that these two have oozes off the pages and is highly explosive! There is just so much that these two need to figure out before they can become the ultimate power king and queen that they are meant to be. They will captivate you and entertain you until the end.

This story is phenomenal with amazing writing and a story-line that will leave you breathless. I loved every second of it and I can't wait to read the next book!

DNF!
I expected this series to not lose it's the element of hopeless love from H and utter loyalty from h.
THIS BOOK WAS SO DIFFERENT..AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY.

First of all HERO ADMITTED that he wants the position..heroine is just a plus one (WHO he loves..kinda...whatever)
R.A.P.E that's what he did in my eyes, I don't care for the shitty little orgasm she had. IT WAS FORCED.

HE CALLS HER MI AMOR..
but what does he say to her all the time?
"WATCH WHAT YOU SAY TO ME NEXT"
and she "kitten" growls and then agrees with him.

HE BEATS HER UP (SAYS it's for the practice/exercise what-fucking-ever), calls her little girl/kid, builts a cage for her that if she tries to leave him, he'll put her there....and then rapes her.
HEROINE HAD HER MOMMY AND STEPFATHER'S BACK...HERO WORKED FOR HER PARENTS NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND...SHE COULD'VE LEFT BUT WHAT DOES SHE DO? NOTHING!!!!

AND TO SMOOTHEN EVERY FUCK UP IN THE BOOK, There comes an expected attack from the villain..borrrinnnngggggg and annoying.

AND THE HERO KINDA TRIES TO CONFESS HIS SINS HE DID TO HER..AND SHE????????
SHE ASKS HIM TO KISS HER......
I'M SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MADDD I'M GONNA KILL SOMEONE

I AM DISAPPOINTED

This was the worse in the series for me Rains is Vee's daughter introduced in the last instalment. Mateo (also mentioned previously) decides he wants to claim Vee's daughter Raina.

She avoids his clutches for a couple of years before needing his help. The whole book is ultimately a battle between the two, Rains fighting for some level of freedom, and Mateo wanting to keep her locked up... I mean safe! There were two main things I didn't like in the story, him raping her and him indirectly removing her ability to have kids without talking to her. I mean this took possessive and keeping safe to a whole other level. The HEA left me with a bitter taste because being with someone like that and who could do that is certainly not a happy ending.

I know this is dark romance and I enjoy when a woman says no, gets a taste then changes her mind so no quickly be comes yes. But when the heroine says I'm not ready and cross her way through pain.. not a turn on.. nothing sexy about that.

In addition to that, I found myself skim reading to get to the next place of interest in the book. Something I didn't do with the previous instalments.

I knew this book was going to be good before I even started the first sentence. I’ve loved the first two books in The Queens series, so my expectations were very high for this third installment. I wasn’t disappointed. Not one bit.

Nikita Slater has been a favored author in my book collection for a couple of years now; she is one of my preferred reread writers. This book will be added to that list. I’m a big fan of mafia romance, and she writes some of the best.

Raina and Mateo, lovers, fighters, and organized crime royalty, are perfect for each other. Mateo always knew this, but it took a while for Raina to come to terms with this alpha, rather controlling man. It was such a fun ride watching the two of them come together.

This book had it all: action, suspense, mystery, love, hate, enemies and friendship. Some characters from past Queens’ stories were included along with a brief introduction to yet another Queen. I can’t wait for that one. It sounds amazing!

If you’re a fan of mafia romance, be sure to add this book to your collection. You won’t regret it. Highly recommended.

Alejandro's Prey was my favorite of the Queens series, but now I'm not sure. And that is saying a lot, because every single book in this series is fantastic. This is a quintessential Nikita Slater read: obsessed possessive alpha male, intelligent and independent female, gorgeous locations, strong supporting characters, and visits from old friends. And yet, even with those things in common, each story is fresh. Raina is not Casey, Vee, or Gina. She is Raina, and she is effervescent. She doesn't bow under the considerable weight of Mateo's regard, but neither does she deny her feelings or sass him. This is what it looks like when a healthy, relatively normal person (aside from the whole forgery business) ends up pulled into the mob, and targeted by a boss's affection. Showing remarkable resilience, Raina adapts to her new life without losing her humor or spark. Mateo, on the other hand, struggles with his own nature throughout the book, and tries to learn how to protect Raina while preserving the things he loves about her.

Highly recommend.

Ok... I'm not going to give anything away 🤔, but this book 📚 was vastly irritating to say the least 🙄. It was a rollercoaster of emotions one moment. Slow as syrup running down an iced log the next. And taking turns left and right out of nowhere land out of the blue. Some actions was entirely uncalled for. Mateo made me want to smack him upside the head with a frying 🍳 pan more times than I could count on one hand. And the Author who wrote this hot mess of a book made me want to slap her upside the head for writing the scenes she had them interacting a couple of times. But I pressed on, Determined to finish this book and then throw it in a corner to not touch for years to come. I swung from a C- to a B- 😒 more than once while reading this book. It was more of a 2 1/2⭐ Read than a 3 ⭐ Read. Oh, well....I hope if she writes another in this Series it is Better than this one. Because this one was painful to read in more ways than one. And although Mateo is a Grade A Nut😵 where Raina is concerned, one does Not doubt🧐 his devotion to his woman❣️.

What can I say? I absolutely love Nikita Slater's books and writing style. She absolutely sucks you in and Raina and Mateo's story is no different. It's dark and intense with elements of romance that just suck you in. I won't rehash the plot because others have done so better than I ever could. What I do like in Nikita's writing is that she stays true to her characters. A possessive, over the top, arrogant, and violent (to other) anti-hero is still the same character at the beginning as he is at the end of the book. He bends ever so slightly for the heroine, and can even make me wince at times with how he treats the heroine, but still the same alpha-hole to her and the rest of the world as he always was. Too many authors go too far to "explain" and "give background" to their heroes and antiheroes. Background is nice, but the characters' actions still need to make sense in the story.

As always, I highly recommend the book and the entire series!

4.5 MEGA STARS!

I am always in a mood for a heroine with a backbone and not some doormat. As a ruler who’s ready to run the Miami Crime scene, Mateo is domineering and not someone to be tested. It was thrilling to watch Raina test him at every turn oh so fearlessly. She doesn’t make it easy for the mob boss. The suspenseful plot, the OTT obsessive alpha, the independent and fierce heroine mix all with explosive chemistry all tie in for a great mafia romance read!

Then again Nikita Slater being one of my top fav authors...She never disappoints.

This is not a typical love story. Not a tame tale where a boy meets a girl, they fall in love and get married. Oh no, it's not that simple. Raina's a girl who lives life on the edge, being on the run from her mafia heritage to grab an ounce of freedom while she can before life comes come knocking at the door. And it literally does, in the form of Mateo.

Mateo is the second-in-command of Raina's stepfather. However, he's becoming a king of his own right and he needs a queen by his side to rule over his territory. That queen is going to be Raina no matter what he has to do. Mateo will keep her safe and by his side, destroying any enemy that dares to threaten her.

This is not a conventional love story as per the norm of Nikita Slater. This story managed to grab every moment of my attention. I loved every single part of it. I cannot wait to read the next one.

intelligent and unknowing of the dark side of things, the deadly Mateo had to be the one who falls for her. mutual attraction that makes things explosive, i absolutely loved the two of them together with her easy going self and his seriousness to everything. there was one point in the story where he treated her poorly and i got teary eyes with what was happening but it was all for a reason.

not as violent as the other books but still full of action. his love of books, playful moments, and his commitment to her melted my heart especially with what he did to himself for her. love love LOVE the two of them

and holy crap! desi and the italian guy! book four!! this will be the first where the heroine is the enemy from the other books and i cannot waaaiittt to see how the author will do it. im in love already!

Wow I'm still fanning myself from this one. Raina and Mateo's story didn't disappoint. Mateo has been after Raina since he took her from her adoptive parent's home in PA and took her back to Venezuela during Vee's story. The chemistry is there. I love how Raina sticks up for herself but doesn't discount they way Mateo cares for her. No mater how overbearing he is! This story picks up with Mateo chasing Raina after her 2 years abroad and takes her back home with him. From their the story takes off. There is violence, drama and so much chemistry between these 2! I love how we get to see their relationship develop and take off. We also get visits from Vee and Casey - past Queens in this book. Awesome read and now I CANNOT wait for the next book.
