1920's, Cozy crime, Traditional Detectives, Downton Abbey - I love them!
Along with my family, my dog and my cat.
At 60 I decided to write, I don't know why but suddenly the stories came pouring out, along with the characters. Eccentric Uncles, stalwart butlers, idiosyncratic servants, machinating Countesses, Fogg the dog and the hapless Major Heathcliff Lennox.
Suddenly a whole world built itself upon the page and I just followed along.

This is the third in what I hope will be an extended mystery series. The main character is a delight, the other characters, recurring or one-time ones, are quirky and fun to read about, the writing is good, the tone is wryly humorous, and the overall coziness of each book makes for a lovely, satisfying read.

These books have been described as being "Agatha Christie meets P.G. Wodehouse" in style and that is an apt description. They take place in the 1920s just a year or so after the end of the Great War and are little slice-of-life stories, somewhat like a comedy of manners with murders, shall we say. The main character, Major Heathcliff Lennox (but do not call him Heathcliff, please) was a pilot in the war and his butler Greggs, with whom he has an entertaining and humorous relationship, was his batman then.

Now back home, Lennox is having a bit of an adjustment to civilian life, preferring solitary activities such as fishing or walking his dog, Mr. Fogg (aka Foggy) in the countryside around his slowly declining estate. He does bestir himself to attend family functions and, beginning with Book 1, in which he visits his uncle, encounters several dead bodies, and is suspected of being a murderer, soon finds that solving mysteries is something that interests him.

That's fortunate, because dead bodies seem to follow him around wherever he goes. And I've been following Lennox around ever since that first book. This third one begins with his newly-married friend, ex-detective Swift (the man who suspected him of murder in Book #1) asking him to come to Braeburn Castle to help with the discovery of a centuries-old skeleton. The skeleton had been wearing a gold crown embedded with jewels, but that crown, along with the skeleton's head, has gone missing.

Where is the crown? Did the group of archaeologists who arrived after learning of the skeleton's discovery have anything to do with its theft? So Lennox shows up to help Swift out, and wouldn't you know it but fresh dead bodies start appearing.

This review is actually a review of the three-book (so far) series by Menuhin: Murder at Melrose Court: A Country House Christmas Murder, The Black Cat Murders: A Cotswolds Country House Murder, and this one. I have enjoyed all three. They are the coziest cozies I've ever read, I believe. The hero Lennox (do NOT call him Heathcliff) is quite an appealing guy. Especially appealing is his relationship with his dog Mr. Fogg, with his newly-adopted kitten (in Book #2) Mr. Tubbs, and with his batman-butler Greggs.

Lennox is not, at times, very socially adept, especially around women, but anyone who is so loving to his animals (Mr. Tubbs goes on the walks with Mr. Fogg in Lennox's pocket) deserves to find some peace and happiness after his service in the Great War. Too bad so many bodies end up in his way, but then he seems to enjoy solving the mysteries. And there's a hint of romance for him in this third book, to be continued in the upcoming fourth installment.

Though the novel’s Halloween-centered themes and sometimes dense dives into Scottish folklore, superstition, and mythology aren’t the best match to my interests, they are deftly and sometimes cleverly handled.

The necessary research and creative handling of history and myth is impressive. The interplay of various characters is as enjoyable as ever.

Though the setting of an uncomfortable, derelict, and isolated ancient Scottish castle was claustrophobic and sometimes viscerally disgusting, that was played to good effect in line with the themes and aims of the story. The weather was deliciously miserable and added to the sense of desolation.

A few darkly humorous scenes, a frustrated budding romance, and an enigmatic mystery woman add color and interest.

It added up to an enjoyable, memorably atmospheric read. For a reader with a closer affinity for some of the subjects, it would be especially satisfying. Affinity or not, it’s easily 4 stars.

Great fun!

These tales of the most endearing characters of Lennox, Fogg and Gibbs are wonderful entertainment with clever mysteries and a touch of history added to the mix. I've read all three and eagerly await the next!

I found this 3rd novel rather a hard slog to get through: it is certainly not as good as the first two.

The main character and his pets are still endearing, but the pace is very slow and full of meandering and inconsequential padding, hence the 2 stars.

3.5 stars A good read for October as it deals with castles, ghosts and skeletons but in a believable way. I like Heathcliff but in this third book, he's somewhat of a prat!

I have to say I’m seriously inclined to continue reading this series (or, to be exact, listening to it - which might be an important part of my love for this series and these characters, as the narration is outstanding). Good old Dame Christie can rest in peace, because her inspiration keeps things going.

Here our Heathcliff is made to deal with some ghosts and a very much gothic Scottish castle, with the very much expected treasure, curse, dungeons, and couple of dead bodies. All the elements of a jolly good murder mystery.

Our beloved main character also falls in love, which I’m sure will be addressed more in depth in the next installment. And acquires a kitten, because he’s meant to make all the readers love him even more.

I listened to this one last year, but read it this time around (because my puppy-rearing brain can't seem to digest new things). Still lots of fun!

A MOST excellent book!!! I loved everything about this book. The characters were wonderful, the ambiance was spooky and the plot was interesting and fast paced. I read this book first, not realizing it was #3 in the series. Now I am going to have to get the first two to read. If you haven't read this book I highly recommend it, even if you don't read the series. EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT Hallowe'en book!

Surprising mix of spooky and funny!

This is my first book by this author. I enjoyed the writing style, which remains true to the period, yet easy to read. There is also a great deal of humour!! The main character finds himself in scrapes that made me burst out laughing several times. As well, the book brims with hilarious jibes!!! I didn't like the seance parts so much, but that is not the fault of the author. My only real concern was the historical details and considerable cast of characters. They were important to the story and altogether hard to keep straight---especially after a long day of work!! If not for the humour, which added lightness, and the likability of the main character, the story might have been a bit too dense or heavy with details. Overall, it's a great mystery that will startle you, make you laugh, and leave you wanting more!

Ever so much fun

Our hero is a sweet rather spoiled man of leisure. But he's loyal, loves his small spaniel and tiny cat to no end, and when needs be, he's clever.

It's not rocket science, but it's based upon the realities known at the time of its setting, shortly after WW1. It's clever and the characters are nicely done.

Continues the story

Another cozy mystery in an old and definitely not cozy castle. Old treasure and old superstitions and old secret tales lead to two murders. Another good read, especially for Agatha Christy fans.

Another entertaining read.

I fell in love with this series from the very first book. I love the characters, the locations, and especially the castle atmosphere. Looking forward to the next book. Highly recommended.

Good prose (and good dialog), good characterization, good world building, good story, no theme. Usually I mark down a star for no theme, but I so thoroughly enjoyed this I just had to give it 5-stars. Ghosts, a medium, a skeleton, a curse, a treasure, a castle, a fair maiden and murder! All leading up to Halloween! Cliches become tired in less inventive hands. This has been a really wonderful series.

This one earned itself only two stars rather than the three of its two predecessors. I didn't like this as much as the others and of the others, I liked the first better than the second. These books started off on a very high note but are on so downward a slope that I fear for the fourth and latest in the series.

Lennox is as endearing a buffoon as ever in this book, and his pets are a nice, cosy interlude. The story here though, was extremely convoluted and, to me, there seemed to be no clues whatsoever pointing to the final culprit. The ending was a complete surprise to me. Ex-Chief Inspector Swift was as insufferable as ever, but he and Florence were very sweet together. One very strange aspect of the plot was the introduction of the clairvoyant. The idea of a complete stranger turning up at a grand house, being welcomed and given bed and board when absolutely no-one actually knows who she is made no sense at all and her presence went some way to spoiling the book for me since every time she appeared in the book she struck such a disparate note. Nothing she said made any sense so she added nothing at all to the plot, making me wonder why on earth she was shoehorned in in the first place.

Not sure about a love interest for Lennox either. Its only natural for a young man, of course, but Lennox is the character he is because he is a bachelor and a loner. Add a woman and he will become a completely different person. A bit like Bertie Wooster actually getting married. If he had, those Jeeves books would have been quite different.

I agree with some reviewers who say that the author has lost her way and should stick to cosy mystery instead of adventure thriller. I don't have high hopes for the next book, but I shall read it just the same.

1921 and the Great War is over. Former Scotland Yard Detective Jonathan Swift is living on a Scottish Isle with his new wife and a skeleton in his home office so he calls on his friend, Major Lennox to help him with things. Lennox reluctantly agrees, brings his former batman plus his dog named Mr Fogg but the little kitten stows away. Another person who sticks along is an older woman he doesn't even know who is a clairvoyant. Once there he finds a cranky Laird, several archaeologists including a very interesting bone specialist, and very soon the first recent body.
Think Mel Brooks with Agatha Christie performed by John Cleese! What a hoot! And the mystery progression with all it's red herrings and plot twists is very good as well. The characters certainly are!
Sam Dewhurst-Phillips did a wonderful job with all the voices and really acted out the story and did not just read it. His voice brings the characters to life with His inflections entirely suited the situations and characters.

While I’m enjoying the Heathcliff Lennox series, this one wasn’t a favorite. I disliked the inclusion of a medium and allusions to curses and ghosts for two reasons, one being that it’s not my cup of tea, and the other that i didn’t think the medium’s character was handled very well in the book. I don’t she was necessary to the story. Another problem I had was that Lennox and others drink alcohol to such an extent that they wouldn’t be able to function in real life. They downed whiskey and brandy almost constantly. Not very believable.
There was also an annoying use of “erm…” It was used far too frequently.

I have certainly enjoyed reading the first three murder mysteries in this Heathcliff Lennox series and plan to continue on to the next book very soon. The characters continue to be likable and/or interesting and the theme this time centers around a skeleton from another age found in an ancient Scottish castle where anything can happen. Archaeologists have descended on the scene as well as a woman with special talents has attached herself to Heathcliff to gain entry to the deadly action.
Adventure and romance await Heathcliff on this visit to his friends.

The third book in this very well-written/exciting mystery series set in 1920's England. Here Lennox, as he prefers to be known travels to Scotland at the invitation of the now-retired Inspector Swift to investigate old bones being dug up at Braeburn Castle. What results afterwards is a mix of myth, lore, clan history, some good 'ol fashioned sleuthing and the hijinks of Lennox with his butler Greggs. The narration by Sam Dewhurst-Phillips was excellent!

Looking forward to the next one.

I really loved the narration of this book!! Every time they mention Fog the dog.. you hear barking. It is such a well done recording. And the book has many interesting characters. For me the only thing that kept me from giving it a higher score was it could have been edited down in the last few chapters. But it is still enjoyable, clean and even humorous mystery.

It's Halloween in 1921. Major Heathcliff Lennox's friend Jonathan Swift has married, retired from official detective work, and now lives with his wife's family at Braeburn Castle on an island in Scotland. He decides to do a bit of renovation in the section of the castle that holds their living quarters and while doing so makes a discovery within the wall. Lennox receives a message that Swift has found a skeleton wearing a crown and the former inspector wants Lennox to come to Scotland to help investigate.. The discovery has attracted archaeologists (whom Swifts suspects are really treasure seekers) and the head and crown have gone missing.

The inhabitants of the castle believe the skeleton to be Black Dougal (an ancient enemy to the Braeburns) and that it comes with a curse and ghosts--very appropriate to Halloween. At the very least it comes with murder--because one of the archaeologists is shoved off the battlements to his death. And then someone burns the only boat on the island. Why does the murderer want them trapped? And why was the archaeologist killed? Swift and Lennox investigate and it seems that they will need to dig into the curse (which is a secret held closely by the Laird of the castle) and the history of Black Dougal. Then a second murder takes place and while Lennox has a suspect in mind, it seems impossible that they could have committed the crime. When he figures out how the person could appear to be in two places at once, he's ready to help Swift capture the killer.

Very atmospheric--Menuhin captures the castle setting very nicely. You are very aware of how drafty, yet claustrophobic the place can be. She also gives us good descriptions of the inhabitants and the archaeologist. Well-drawn characters that are clearly defined and work well in the setting. The only one I'm not sold on is Miss Fairchild, a psychic/medium who makes a beeline for the castle as soon as the skeleton is found. She's a nice enough lady and all, but she really isn't necessary to the plot unless the point is to validate the ghosts and whatnot for the Halloween theme. But she's doesn't add anything plot-wise that couldn't have been covered just as well by other characters. The plot itself is well done and I appreciate the way Menuhin has taken a device that provided a solid alibi in a particular Agatha Christie novel and turned it on its head. Very nice!

I know well that old adage about reading much fiction requiring a "willing suspension of disbelief", but I have my limits, especially when there is so much fiction out there. It seems to me that authors are getting sloppier, especially in mysteries, and the readership doesn't seem to care. I do, and I am DNFing a lot more books... like this one, which I closed in high annoyance at the 16% mark.
Lennox is urgently called to Braeburn Castle by his friend, and on the train a middle-aged woman, comes into his cabin and asks if she can sit there . He says it is no problem, because he is getting off at the next stop to visit Braeburn Castle, and she replies that she is going there, too. At the train station, the driver picking Lennox up is not expecting a second passenger, and no one at the castle seems to know her, but Lennox does not react, despite that fact that he has been called because his friend has found a skeleton, has had some thefts, and thinks someone tried to murder his wife. I gave up on page 50 when his host asks Lennox point blank why he brought that woman; Lennox said he had not brought her and did not know her; and the host shrugs it off by saying his wife has taken a shine to her. No. A worried man is not going to accept a stranger in his home like that.
I cannot believe this book's ratings average 4+ stars.

Audible version: Ghosts and treasure and dungeons and legends! This one was my favorite so far. Also, I adore Heathcliff, sorry, Lennox! He's such a dork and that makes him a fun character. The little spats he has with Swift make me laugh. I wish I could remember the exact quotes (like when he's talking about Swift he says something like, "He's always so annoyingly particular when it comes to dead bodies." Haha! And Lennox is such a bumbler, making mistakes and forgetting proper procedure, which annoys Swift. I can't wait for the next one. They may not be advancing my intellect any, but they are keeping me entertained in a less than entertaining time!

This is a fun series of mysteries set in the 1920s. This time Heathcliff Lennox is urged to come to Braeburn Castle by his friend Inspector Swift who is now married to the Lady Florence. This one has a skeleton with a missing head and crown, ghosts, curses, murder, and more. Marooned for a few days on Braeburn Island because someone has burnt the only boat, Heathcliff and Swift must do their own detective work amongst a group of odd archeologists, a woman who nobody seemed to have invited who can speak to the dead, and the Laird, his family, and the servants of the castle. Each of these mysteries are imbued with some humor and twists and turns enough to hold one's interest to the end.

A fun read with some interesting characters. A solid mystery set in a medieval Scotland, with a mysterious skeleton, crown, treasure, vikings, crossbows, dungeons, a medium, ghosts, kilts, bagpipes, a seance and fun English and Scottish accents. My favorite was when granny the cook spoke. Here's her first sentence she spoke in the story - "Wit ye doin' in 'ere, ye lanky malinky longlegs?" Loved her!

I continue to enjoy this series in audio form. The author gives me exactly what I want and need right now. I was happy that Swift was still part of the cast, even though he has retired from police work. The way he and Lennox work together and antagonize each other is great fun. Again the side characters and the setting were more important to me than the actual mystery, although that too was intriguing, with the rich historic background it provided.

I do enjoy these fun little mysteries. Heathcliff Lennox has been urged to come to Braeburn Castle by his friend Inspector Swift. Swift is now married to Lady Florence and Swift believes a threat has been made on her life. The story has ghosts and curses, a lady who ‘sees’ dead people and a crazy group of archeologists who are searching for treasure at the castle. The story is told with humor and suspense. Our intrepid hero might find love??
I like how the author continues to expand on the personal lives of her central characters.
