She narrowly escapes the killer but he’s seen her face. When no trace of the car or the body is found—and no one is reported missing—the authorities dismiss Olivia’s claims as an attention-seeking ploy by an unstable young woman. Olivia, however, is anything but. She resorts to her own investigation and uncovers a growing list of elderly widows who have vanished without a trace. With the police case languishing and a well-grounded fear that a serial killer is at large and is now stalking her, Olivia takes matters into her own hands. When the killer has her caged, it looks like it’s going to get lethally hot for Olivia…Interview with the Author
Have you always wanted to be a writer? I'm an attorney and have done a lot of technical writing, but knew I wanted to write novels. I thought I'd find time when I retired. Fate stepped in, as it often does, and put me on this path sooner. I broke my neck in an auto accident and suffered from double vision for months. I couldn't read or watch TV, so I conceived the plot for my Rosemont series.
Why did you decide to write a series? I prefer television series to movies. The longer format of television allows for deeper character development. The same holds true for series fiction. I like to fall in love with a character or hate a character (but root for them to change their ways). I feel like Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi from Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies' Detective Agency series are old friends. I wanted to recreate that sort of connection in the Rosemont series.
What other authors do you read or admire? I'm a fan of women's fiction, women's sagas, romantic suspense, domestic suspense, crime fiction, and romance. I love Rosamunde Pilcher's later trilogy -The Shell Seekers, Coming Home, and September. Jan Karon's Mitford series creates an enchanting world, as does Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove. My Rosemont series is set in the current day, but I've tried to capture a feeling of camaraderie and connection (among the good guys) that takes us back to a slightly simpler time and place.
What are your favorite books? In addition to the works I've already mentioned, I adored A Man Called One, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and A Long Way from Chicago.
Who has had the greatest influence on your author life? My dad--without question. He told me or read me a bedtime story every night of my childhood, often adding his own twists and turns to the plots or dialogue. He had an incredible, gentle sense of humor. He also wrote novels--who-done-its--when he retired.
What are the high points of your author journey? There are 3 things I hold very 1) hearing from readers--especially newly blind adults--that my Guiding Emilyseries has given then hope and provided comfort, 2) having my novella The Christmas Club made into a Hallmark Channel movie of the same name (2019), and 3) seeing my name on the USA Today Bestseller List.
What of your own interests have you written about in the Rosemont series? I love my home and all things related to cooking, gardening, decorating, and entertaining. I lovecelebrating all of the seasons and I change my decor for Easter, 4th of July, fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring.
USA Today Bestselling Author Barbara Hinske is an attorney who recently left the practice of law to pursue her career as a full-time novelist. She inherited the fiction gene from her father who wrote mysteries when he retired and told her a story every night of her childhood. Barbara is the bestselling author of the beloved Rosemont series; the acclaimed Guiding Emily series; a collection of murder mystery thrillers in her "Who's There?" collection; and her sweet Christmas novellas The Christmas Club (adapted for the Hallmark Channel in 2019), Paws & Pastries, and No Matter How Far.
She and her husband share their own Rosemont with two adorable and spoiled dogs. She is besotted with decorating, entertaining, cooking and gardening. Now that her novel The Christmas Club has been made into a Hallmark Channel movie, she is completely star-struck and thrilled to have her work on the screen.
This was a good mystery involving a serial killer who is quite possibly someone you know. It kept me guessing for awhile. Although my suspicions were spot on, it had me change my mind several times. A new romance starts to brew and the main character grows in confidence. Thanks to the author for the ARC. All opinions and comments are my own.
Olivia Osgoode is a quiet, insecure but intelligent young woman. When she sees a man jamming a woman’s body into the trunk of a car parked in the deserted lot where she left her car, her first reaction is fear then anxiety. She’s sure the man saw her and will try to kill her for her knowledge. The police don’t believe her since they don’t see any evidence, no one has reported a missing woman, and, because she has a speech impediment, they assume she’s not mentally reliable. She soon realizes she must take things into her own hands to make sure she’s safe, particularly when she discovers that other older women are missing.
I must admit, I’m not a big fan of mystery thrillers – I like my mysteries cozy. But I am a big fan of Barbara Hinske, so when she offered me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book and review it, I couldn’t say “no.” I had read her previous thriller Deadly Parcel and liked it, and this book is even better. The perpetrator is a sick person who appears to be perfectly normal. Olivia has friends, old and new, who support her in her enquiries. The tension that Ms Hinske builds around Olivia’s investigation kept me up late to finish the book. While this isn’t a book for everyone, anyone who likes tense mysteries will find the book entertaining.
What a great second book in the Who's There series! Another page turner! I was holding my breath, almost wanting to read ahead, to see what was going to happen! The characters were so true to life and this was expertly written! My heart is still pounding after reading this book! Kudos, Barbara Hinske!
I love this series. I re-read both books recently and I'm now wishing there was a 3rd book in the series. I love this author because you know there's not going to be bad language or steamy sex scenes. Her characters are so likable you find yourself wishing they were real. I've read every book Barbara Hinske has written and have loved them all.
This was, unexpectedly, a fun book to read. The subject matter was often gruesome, but the main protagonist Olivia was an unusual heroine. She was tenacious, inventive, and had an unusual hobby. I found all of this pointed at the killer by mid-book, but it didn’t detract from reading about her cracking the case. I recommend it.
I thoroughly enjoy Me Hinske's Rosemont series. I am now hooked on this new mystery series. Each so far are stand alone stories. The mystery is very good. I liked this second entry as much as I did the first book, Deadly Parcel.
Olivia saw a man with a dead woman in the parking garage. She escaped and in time realized other women were missing. The police didn’t believe her. This author knows how to keep my heart beating rapidly as Olivia is in danger. This book I’d a definite to read.
Olivia is not your typical heroine. She has a cleft palate, works at a funeral home, and repairs antique toasters for fun. Excellent storyline, but now I’m rethinking my decision to be cremated. LOL
I thought the story started slow but then, wow, it sure picked up. The ending was, if not surprising as to the killer, but surprising as to the manner of the apprehension. So one of my favorite authors did get a good review from me.
Final Circuit by Barbara Hinske is an exciting, on the edge of your seat murder mystery book!
The main character Olivia, works for a Mortuary. One night after she worked late, she witnesses a man trying to stuff a dead womans body into the trunk of his car, in the parking lot, where she is parked. The murderer sees her and starts in pursuit of her. He vows to capture her! Olivia escapes this chase!
Throughout the book, Olivia visits her grandmother's grave daily, as she recently passed. During her visits to the cemetery, she got to meet a few elderly widows in passing, that also visit their husbands graves daily, near her grandmother's grave. All of a sudden, these widows stop coming to the cemetery, one by one.
The murderer knows Olivia, but she is unaware of this. He sets out to make Olivia, his next victim! Through many twists and turns, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat, until the very end! I found my heart racing towards the end of the book, to see how it would end, tragic or happy?
This murder mystery is intriguing, exciting, riveting and suspenseful and will keep you wondering what will happen, every minute! I couldn't put this book down!
I think this is definitely another best seller by Barbara Hinske! It tugs at many emotions, throughout the story! I give it a 5-star rating!
There are a plethora of books on the market that promise to provide readers multilayered characters, unusual backgrounds and a complicated plot. Once in a while, you will find an Author who delivers the goods and the reward is phenomenal. FINAL CIRCUIT by Barbara Hinske is one such book and it is brilliant!! Hinske has gifted readers with a fantastic plot — a series of connections — that ties a group of people together. On the surface, these people really have nothing in common. Deep digging reveals their connection and it is deadly. Ordinary people living ordinary lives all tied together by their common connection to a cunning, calculated cold blooded killer. If not for the dogged determination of one young woman, how many more innocent victims would be sacrificed? Reading this book will have you rethinking, “Can there be such thing as the ‘perfect murder.’” Hinske may have found it! This book is one you will want to read from start to finish in one setting!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Casa del Northern Publishing. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
Barbara Hinske’s second mystery novel doesn’t disappoint. I have read all of her Rosemont series and several other smaller works that are very different from these mystery novels. I was concerned at first if she would be able to pull it off. I shouldn’t have worried at all. Final Circuit is about a woman who witnesses someone disposing of a dead body but no one believes her. They think she has made the whole thing up because of the stress she is dealing with in her life. When several other people disappear, she is convinced they are all connected but has no idea how to prove it enough to get the police to believe her. My opinion of who the villain was changed a couple times over the story so it definitely kept me interested to the end to find out who the killer really was. A great second mystery novel.
What would you do if you saw a body being stuffed into the trunk of a car?
This is Olivia Osgoode's dilemma. She knows what she saw but the police don't believe her. They cannot find any evidence. They can't even find the body. Olivia decides to do a little investigating of her own. Eventually, we find out who the murderer is. It had me baffled. I thought I knew and then a new twist would come up and I just wasn't sure. The characters in this book are interesting and each one has problems to deal with. There's a bit of romance in here and Olivia has an interesting hobby of collecting and repairing old toasters. I received an ARC of this book. I read it in two days. I enjoyed all aspects of this story. Barbara Hinske is on the top of my list of favorite authors.
Is it Tom or Sam? It isn’t until the final few chapters that you are sure who the killer is. I love this in a book. Olivia is such a likeable, caring person. She sees a dead woman being put into the trunk of a car, but the detective in charge doesn’t believe her because there is no body. Olivia works for a funeral home. Both her boss, Sam, and his twin brother, Tom, have their own secrets and problems – but which of them is the killer…
