Undercover: A Modern Pride and Prejudice Novella

Rate this book
"When he walked into the diner about a half-hour ago, her eyes were immediately drawn to him..." Elizabeth Bennet grew up with these gangsters and drug dealers she calls friends. She is unmotivated but determined to make her dead father proud as she continually puts effort into creating a better life for herself. In the meantime, she's not opposed to walking the line of danger with her friends. Detective Darcy will stop at nothing to take down George Wickham, who has been linked to the disappearance of several young women. Since Wickham is the newest, though smallest, crime lord in the area, he decides the best way to get close enough to find the answers he needs is to infiltrate his inner circle. He thinks his way in is through Charlie Bingley, Lizzy's best friend, but she tips him off and unknowingly thwarts Darcy. Fate and a momentary lapse of judgment threw them together, but a lot is working against them. How long could this connection last, and how can it possibly end in anything but disaster?

A Good Modern Variation
Quite a different take on this modern Elizabeth-Darcy story. Elizabeth manages to be a favorite among local gangs, while avoiding being a participant, and Darcy is undercover trying to infiltrate a particular gang in order to find evidence for murders of women.

The author cleverly manages to weave many of the P&P characters into the storyline. I thought the dialogue was good and the plot interesting, maintaining my interest throughout. The love story and happy ending was good too. I loved Darcy’s proposal. I especially recommend it to JAFF aficionados who enjoy modern Pride and Prejudice variations. Proofreading could use a bit more attention.

I really liked casual so I was excited for this book.

So many editing and continuity errors it was severely distracting. Darcys career keeps switching on the reader. One minute they are in a bedroom the next it mentions they are on the couch. Letters left out of words changing the whole meaning.

I was disappointed. The plot had potential. It needed to be tightened up because there was also a lot of nothing that happened. And I think the characters should have had no P&P names because personalities were so changed.

This was a great book that could have been amazing.
The premise was different filled with suspense and action, the characters motivation and development were interesting and the romance was lovely.
The downside: it's super long with no reason, The story dragged with pages of mundane stuff.
I loved Casual and this was also a good story, but I don't think I'll read it again. Will definitely read all future books by this author.

My dignity drowned,
lost beneath the tides of shame—
pride floats far away.

Notes: In dire need of an edit. Multiple grammatical and spelling errors.

Great potential. The writing is good and the plot is clever.
I just thought the author could have made it much shorter, to keep the pace fast. I skipped many pages because they didn’t bring much to the plot or the characters.
