FBI-K9 #3

Concealed Cargo: Children for Sale

Rate this book
When Special Agent Clay Jennings and his K9 partner, Ranger, take to the streets of Denver to fight human trafficking, he is shocked by the inordinate number of stolen innocents who’ve been forced into the sex trade. With each new face, his resolve to help these children escape their personal horror grows stronger.

El Clark, a social worker who dedicates her life to rescuing exploited kids from the streets, works valiantly to locate their families or find them a safe place to live while they recuperate. She understands the plight of these young victims more than anyone knows.

When these two champions of enslaved children team up, they discover a web of deviant corruption that reaches into the upper echelons of US politics and society. Adding to the nightmare, a vicious serial killer focused on murdering female prostitutes threatens to pull Clay and El away from unearthing the man behind the treacherous, Colorado-based, child prostitution ring.

For Clay, working to solve these crimes is like taking one step forward and three back until El shares her story with him. Inspired by her bravery and fortitude, he is re-committed to the fight for justice. Clay and El battle against a mountain power and money the height of which they’d never conceived and end up building a strong bond with one another along the way. El teaches Clay that every life they change matters—that they must do what they can, even when it’s only one child at a time.

From the moment you are introduced to Clay Jennings you know he is a "good guy". The way he does his job, works with his K9 partner Ranger and how he wants things "done right". When he is introduced to social worker Eloise Clark you begin to see a softer side of him also. Thrown together in the seedy underworld of people trafficking, drugs and street life, they both try to hide parts of their history, but continue work together as a great team. Their dedication to help kids and families get off the streets and into a new life propel them to keep on dealing with the dirty and rough side of policing. This tragic and highly believable story drags you from pre-season football galas, hotels, back street alleys to the highest offices of elected State representatives and into the Senate chambers! From professors to politicians, the depth and depravity of this seedy and devastating criminal world is revealed - as is it terrifying effects on the lives of those unwittingly pulled into it. From the depraved world of these underworld goons to the fantastic work done daily by FBI and Police forces worldwide, you will understand the growing need for everyone to acknowledge the inherent badness in this world. Once acknowledged, we must make concerted efforts to bring it to an end. Be prepared for some pretty upsetting scenes in the book - but none are gratuitous - you need to feel their pain to understand the help that is so badly needed. Sad that this story line is actually happening in the real world, way too often. Grateful that shining a light on the reality may help bring about much needed support for rehabilitation and policing to get "the bad guys" put of business. Kudos to Author Jodi Burnett for bringing these sordid but true stories to life. Highly recommended read. (Reviewers Note: I received this book as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.)

Clay is an FBI K9 officer working with the Human Trafficking Task Force.  Clay had never seen this ugly side of human trafficking and it effects him greatly.  He and his K9 partner work nights with local law enforcement to sniff out and arrest illegal cargo such as drugs and especially people.  Eloise (El) is a social worker that has a heart for helping kids who have been trafficked.  El is very aware of exactly how ugly and inhumane trafficking can be and just how hard it is to escape that life.  El is a survivor of human trafficking.

Although the subject matter is heavy and deplorable, Burnett does a wonderful job of writing a book with feeling and depth.  She shows how people can get sucked into the dark world of trafficking against their will and then get stuck in the never ending cycle of violence and survival.  The characters are well developed with rich background. I love that this book is well written and plotted out.  I enjoyed seeing the relationship of handler and dog and just how versatile the dogs can be.  I love Clay's character.  He is a strong alpha male with a huge heart.  I liked how he learns to connect with the girls and seeing his heart break for them.  Eloise is such a complex character.  Even though she doesn't always believe it, she is strong and courageous.  She will stop at nothing to help the girls she comes in contact with.  In addition, this book has pulse pounding action and suspense.  This was a book that I stayed up most of the night to read.

This book is not for the faint of heart as it looks at the ugly underbelly of power and corruption and trafficking.  However, it is also a wonderful story of hope, healing, and second chances.

I definitely recommend this book.   I received a free copy and am voluntarily leaving a review which is my opinion alone.

Clay Jennings and his K9 partner Ranger, team up with social worker El to rescue enslaved children who’ve been forced into the sex trade. While they discover a web of deviant corruption that reaches into the upper echelons of politics and society, a vicious serial killer wreaks havoc among female prostitutes in the area.
This book is a grim reminder of the horror and cruelty some children have to endure. Despite the heavy theme, and Clay and El’s battle against discouragement and despair, their relationship gives them strength and hope, and will change their lives forever.
This was the first book I read by Jodi Burnett, but it made a big impression. It's a multilayered story about corruption, cruelty and abuse at every level of society. An absolute must-read!

I received this audiobook on Audible from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this story about a K-9 officer and his dog, along with the social worker with a history. They take on sex trafficking in their city. The two main characters and the K-9 are well written with depth to their characters and obstacles to overcome in their relationship. Overall a great story.

I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Courageous, Wrenching with spots of sun.Shock, tears, awareness and hope. This story is Clays. The FBI K-9 leader who loves women. I knew he would be handed his baby blues, but wow, by El who has her own such a horrific story that unfortunately takes place all over the world. My heart broke. I gagged right along with Clay. I wept with anguish and pride as Candie fought for herself and Tom. I am in awe of our officers who deal with this on a daily basis. I am in love with Ranger, the attack K9 with heart for the wounded. As dark and disturbing as this subject matter is, Jodi handled it with class. You felt the horror, you knew what transpired but you were not forced to endure a detailed description. My blood pumped with satisfaction when Clay and the rest took down some of the culprits. Through it all was hope. I know there is no quick fix, but I was more than pleased With the ending for some. As El says, even one life. Even though this is book 3, it can be read as a stand alone with no issues.

First, I was given this book for an honest review. I love Jodi Brunette’s books but she really upped her game on this one, which had to be hard because it is such a sad truth. If I could giv ten stars I would. Normally when we hear of human trafficking it is usually older teenagers or young adults, but this has girls as young as eleven and boys as young as nine. And these children were not already prostutiates. They had been lured by a pimp or actually kidnapped off the street. I shed many tears over this book. Thank goodness that there are social workers like El, who can help these kids once they are recovered. And Clay the KP policeman with his dog ranger are an important part, that shows that Ranger can go at a criminals neck or arm and keep him there until he can be handcuffed. But it also shows that these dogs can sense that these children need a little love and a feeling of safety. I got mad at the pimp, but if there were not men who wanted to sexually abuse these young girls and boys, then there would be no need of human trafficking of children. I think the legal system should come down hard on these men, no matter what their position in society is. Jodi did an outstanding job showing all sides of this horrible crime and I pray that it can be stopped. Great book. Probably wouldn’t let anyone younger than 15 read it, but I hope kids are still being taught stranger dander and if sounds to good to be true it probably isn’t.

This isn’t the same womanizer FBI Agent Clay Jennings from the previous book. If it wasn’t for K9 Ranger, I would have not even recognized Clay’s character. I am glad he didn’t project his “God’s Gift to Women” attitude, but the author gave no indication by his actions in this book he even needed to change. That seemed a little off to me. El is a strong, courageous, giving leading lady that certainly deserves happiness. Clay is the man to give that happy life.
There is nothing entertaining reading about human trafficking, however the on-going battle against this horrible crime was told with respect and realism. This story gave faces, emotions, and heart to the victims. Earlier this month in the real world the U.S. Marshals rescued 72 children across the Midwest in three separate operations since mid-August from human trafficking. As this story illustrated, the rescue is just the first step for these victims and their families.
I honestly, didn’t like the way the ending went in this book. It was unrealistic how quickly El and Clay’s relationship moved.

This is a heartfelt story about human trafficking in a small town in Colorado. Clay Jennings along with his K-9 FBI partner Ranger have become a part of a task force addressing human cargo. Eloise Clark is a social worker trying to get the victims safely placed and provide rehabilitation for them. When Clay first starts working the streets on the task force, he does not see these victims as real human people but as just a statistic or object. Someone he needs to get off of the streets. Then with the help of EL ( Eloise) he becomes aware that they are humans, children who have been abducted and forced into the positions they are in. What holds them there is fear of the unknown and the knowledge that they have no one to turn to or no where to go. While this is a work of fiction, it is certainly enlightening as far as what goes on in human trafficking and at the end it lists agencies where you can learn more about how to help these victims. Jodi has certainly done her homework on this one and it is a story well worth reading.

This is the first time in reading this author with the title catching my eye. Since I do live in the corridor that is part of the trek for human traffickers and recently some children had been rescued in a container this is anther reason it caught my eye. The down side though I caught this one in the third one in the series. Special Agent Clay is getting a bit of a big picture on just how extensive it all is with the children and trafficking. El also is going hard at doing what she can in the aiding and fighting of the innocent that come back at times not innocent. She too is a fighter for them and the 3 together have all our attention when it comes to the fight. On top of that there goes a serial killer that needs to go down. I did not have any edge left to my seat. I wanted the killer caught and the one behind the ring strung up. The other thing though too is the matters of the heart you get in this one along with the focus it takes. This does give us a gold mine of a story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important Read About Human Trafficking
Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2020
Concealed Cargo does an excellent job of combining the horrors faced by victims of human trafficking with the developing relationship between Clay and El. This story brings awareness of and insight into the human trafficking of children that is more widespread and with a much larger number of victims than imagined. Kendra Dean, Annie, and Baxter return to help El cope.
In addition, a secondary plot follows clues to reveal the identity of a serial killer. This mystery brings back the characters of Rick Sanchez and Burke Cameron who heads up the investigation.
I love how Jody Burnett is able to combine fiction with reality to make this a very enjoyable and necessary read.

This is the first time in reading this and of the Jodi's K-9 Series, but I was very excited to become an ARC reader as I've greatly enjoyed her other books. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to write about human trafficking, but the entire store was very powerfully driven. I definitely need to read the first two in this series to get a better picture of things though. El Clark, the social worker, was one of my favorite characters and you can see how hard she works to see what she might be able to do to help the children that are being trafficked. She has a lot of fight in her spirit and I really admired that. On top of her discoveries, you get a serial killer mystery that must be solved. I would definitely recommend this book and from what I've read, this series, as it had me on the edge of my seat. Great job Jodi!

This is a very timely story. Although the subject has been around for many years, it really needs to be addressed in a more widespread manner. Getting more people knowledgeable about it will help address the problem. If everyone was aware, the perpetrators couldn’t operate as easily and more children could/would be saved. It’s also nice to see a “womanizer” meet his match, and not in the usual way. The story matter is somber but the story does keep your interest and is engrossing. There is a nice romance and the dogs are their usual, wonderful selves, helping out their human friends. I did think that Baxter’s role could have been a bit more explained. He was just perfect for the role he played in helping the women. Damaged himself, he could give so much empathy. I recommend this book

A beautifully written story and one of the most heart wrenching stories that I have read. Ms. Burnett brings awareness to the despicable crime of human trafficking and those who prey on the young and vulnerable. The story also brings awareness of hope and recovery to victims. FBI Special Agent Clay Jennings, along with his K9 Ranger, come across young girls who have been trafficked. He meets social worker Eloise “El” Clark who has made it her life’s work to save as many of these young girls and boys as she can. She knows what they have gone through from her own past experience. While working to shut down a trafficking ring, Clay is also searching for a serial killer who is targeting young women. Clay is attracted to the woman that El is and has become, but dare she hope that he can accept her, all of her including her past? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author. (by paytonpuppy)

Tough subject treated with compassion. Human trafficking is real but is generally spoken of as trafficked adults. These are children and this too is real. Author brought both the horrific lives these children are forced to live and awareness of those who, like El, work to prevent trafficking and to help those willing to escape and hope for a different future. Along the way, El developed a relationship with a FBI agent and his K9 partner. The book offered information and hope for recovery.

Due to the subject matter, this is not an easy read but is gripping. Would not recommend for younger readers, although all should be made aware of the reality of child trafficking.

Received a free copy in return for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this book, despite the dark topic of human trafficking. As always, the author writes interesting and likeable heroes in her stories. You find your self rooting for the "good guy" characters and despising the villains she creates. Being from Colorado, and having the book based in the state, it is always enjoyable to read about different recognizable landmarks that I am familiar with. I think the book was informative on the topic and shines a spotlight on this deplorable crime and includes links for groups fighting to rescue people from being taken advantage of in this way.

Fast Paced Book

This book is a real eye opener in what can happen anywhere in the world with human trafficking. Kudos to people like El and Clay and Ranger that try to make a difference in the life’s of young children that are being used & abused by people in the sex trade. It’s always amazing what man can do to man to make a profit. I thank the author for bringing this crime to light in her book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

I became a fan of this author through an ARC program and then went back and read prior books by this author. Now I have become part of her ARC group and I received this ARC directly from the author. This series concentrates on the K9 unit of the FBI out of the Denver office. This book focuses on Clint, who heads up the K9 unit. He was a secondary character in the prior books, and they seem to be continuing to work on a human trafficking case that has carried on during the series. This author has a talent for the characters she creates and how they evolve when the story focuses on them. Was not a fan of Clint before this book but enjoyed his story.
In this story, Clint meets El (Eloise) a social worker that works with child victims. Initially they meet after a raid and as Clint continues to be part of the task force, he calls on El to help with victims. They also realize that Ranger, Clint’s K9 partner is excellent with these kids and could be an asset with their program to recover. This is partially how the relationship between Clint and El grows and they begin to see each other beyond work. It is difficult because of El’s past which helps with her work but is challenging for other parts of her life. The case gets more complex and keeps you reading as you try to figure out what might happen to these kids. At points it is sad as to what is happening to these children and how it is such a large problem. Really good yet disturbing story that centers on a large dilemma in the world.

I read in one sitting. Such a heart wrenching topic that must be told. Jodi Burnett did a wonderful job telling this tragedy. My heart broke many times while reading. There were times I wanted to put the book down because I didn't want to know. We all should know. I will never look at the world the same way again, and I shouldn't. I would highly recommend this story to all. The more we know, the more we can help.

Human trafficking is one of the worst problems the world faces and although a difficult theme to write about, Jodi Burnett put together a good story with a perspective of hope for those involved in this terrible situation. Also, one of the main characters, K9 Ranger, melts the reader´s heart every time he reaches for the hurt ones and helps them out. We sure have to love dogs! An entertaining and easy to read book although on a difficult subject!
As a member of the author´s ARC team I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest review.

This is a new author to me, and wow, Jodi Burnett makes this work of fiction open our eyes to sex trafficking, the horrors faced by the victims, and the hard road to recovery if they are ever rescued. It is a dark topic, indeed. We also get to go into the daily life of El, one such survivor fighting to save as many victims as she can, and how she begins to believe that she just might be worthy of love after all when she meets Clay and his dog.

Concealed Cargo, by Jodi Burnett, was a fantastic book! Although the subject matter, which dealt with sex and drug trafficking with minors, is abhorrent, the author wrote the book with such sensitivity. It made me cry. In fact, I stayed misty-eyed quite a bit as I was reading. Yet, Ms. Burnett included bits of humor to ease some tension. The characters were believable and the plot was plausible. Everything flowed perfectly throughout, especially the author's descriptions as well as nods to the FBI's training of their canines. I give the book more than a thumb's up!

Jodi Burnett has written a very moving story that tells the tale of human trafficking where young children are forced into the sex trade. It is not an easy story to listen to but Jodi handles the story with brilliance and compassion. I encourage others to realize that although this story is fiction, it is based on something that is really happening in the US today. Kimberly Austin's narration is poignant. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

Just getting into this series and for the first-time reading Jodi Burnett. It is very taunting what trafficking does to one's mind and body, so sad for all these children. Read it all day long because I couldn't put it down. The characters are all great and work well together. I love this author. I will read more of her books now.

This is the second book by Jodi Burnett I have read, or should say listened to, as I received the audio book version.

I was absolutely blown away by this story about sex trafficking of young children.

Clay Jennings, the leader of the K-9 unit and his teams are trialling working with general law enforcement. As part of this operation he is exposed to the seedy world of sex trafficking and realises how little he knows and understands, and is surprised how gentle and supportive his K-9 partner and highly trained attack dog is with the young girls and boys they come across.

He also meets Eloise Clark, the attractive social worker, to whom he is strongly attracted to her and cannot accept that she spurns his advances – he doesn’t usually have to work so hard to get a date. As their paths keep crossing she also gains his admiration for her dedication to saving and caring for these victims, tirelessly working, not only in her job, but giving up her free time to raise awareness of sex trafficking and to help the women rescued from that life. For the first time in his life Clay doesn’t just see a woman to have a bit of fun with, but someone he wants to get to know properly and for whom he is falling. El is attracted to Clay, but she rejects him, because she harbours a secret. What she hasn’t reckoned with is Clay’s persistence and he gently and sensitively cracks through El’s self-protective shell, ably assisted by Ranger.

We also follow Candy, one of the trafficked girls and see the harrowing plight of these children first hand through her eyes and the lengths they have to go to, to survive and the dangers they are exposed to.
One of these dangers comes from a serial killer who targets prostitutes. Special agent Rick Sanchez, whom we have encountered in books one and two of the K-9 series spearheads this investigation and collaborates with the trafficking taskforce to warn the street workers and track down this killer.

There is so much action, blossoming romance, human interest, cold-hearted money making, evil and disgusting human deprivation, the heart breaking plight of young lives being destroyed, as well as showing the goodness and caring of people; all layered skilfully and insightfully on top and side by side - it is breath taking.
...and not forgetting the unconditional love and protection dogs give us so freely.

This audio book is narrated by Kimberly Austin and she reads the story with great sensitivity to the scenes and circumstances the characters find themselves in. It made for a very enjoyable listening experience.

I received this book in audio book format from the author and am leaving this review of my own volition.

Concealed Cargo, book 3 in the FBI K-9 Series, took me on an emotional roller coaster ride I thought would never end. Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying, Concealed Cargo, Children for Sale is a heart pounding police thriller as the FBI and local authorities hunt for a serial killer who is preying on very young prostitutes with long auburn colored hair. But this book is more than a thriller with an adrenaline rush as powerful as the hot lava spewing from an erupting volcano. The emotions displayed by the characters as they experience the impact that human trafficking has on its victims and on those who set out to put an end to it are all too real, too realistic. This is a book that can’t be read without the reader getting caught up in the emotions being experienced by the characters.

There’s FBI Agent Clay Jennings and his K-9 partner Ranger who plays a key role in the task force set up to find and take down the killer preying on prostituted and put a stop to human trafficking. Then there’s Eloise, “El,” Clark, a social worker who had been a victim of human trafficking herself as a young girl. El has devoted her entire life to helping girls survive their experiences as victims but she has no personal love life because she’s scared to trust any man. She thinks no man worth having would want to have anything to do with her once they find out about her past. That all changed when Clay and Ranger enter her life.

Just when I thought the emotions couldn’t become any more intense… well, go read this book. The way this book ends will blow your mind. It did mine, and it takes a great deal to do that to me. I have read many of Jodi’s books, but Concealed Cargo is my all-time favorite to-date.
