The Science of the Ocean: The Secrets of the Seas Revealed

Rate this book
Dive into this uniquely elegant visual exploration of the sea

An informative and utterly beautiful introduction to marine life and the ocean environment, The Science of the Ocean book brings the riches of the underwater world onto the printed page.

Astounding photography reveals an abundance of life, from microscopic plankton to great whales, seaweed to starfish. Published in association with the Natural History Museum, the book explores every corner of the oceans, from coral reefs and mangrove swamps to deep ocean trenches.

Along the way, and with the help of clear, simple illustrations, it explains how life has adapted to the marine environment, revealing for example how a stonefish delivers its lethal venom and how a sponge sustains itself by sifting food from passing currents. It also examines the physical forces and processes that shape the oceans, from global circulation systems and tides to undersea volcanoes and tsunamis.

To most of us, the marine world is out of reach. But with the help of photography and the latest technology, The Science of the Ocean brings us up close to animals, plants, and other living things that inhabit a fantastic and almost incomprehensibly beautiful other dimension.

As far as a coffee table book goes, you can’t get much better. The photography is phenomenal…
As for actual enjoyment of reading the entire book, it can obviously be a bit tedious.

Superb - even as an ebook

The quality of coffee-table ebooks continues to be deplorable, even after a decade of opportunities to improve the situation.

But this DK book is superb - by current standards - even as an ebook, and you don’t feel you are having to click to open a photograph, only to find a grainy, pixelated snap and then struggle to get back to where you were before. This book feels like you are looking at the printed book, with its superb photos and diagrams.

The content is excellent too, with plenty of useful graphics and photos. The book is sold as a children’s book but it really is suitable for adults. I never felt I was reading dumbed-down text.

DK continues to set the standard for quality non-fiction “big books” as they have done since the 1990s.

This book features some of the highest quality photographs and artistically clear images among DK's many marine encyclopedias.
This is one of the best teaching materials for learning about the underwater world and creatures.

I live near the sea, and when I feel tired, I go snorkeling to refresh myself.
It's fun to stick my head in the sea and swim smoothly to meet small fish.
When I'm in the ocean, I don't think about anything. Well, just being in the sea is soothing.

The creatures featured in this book are as beautiful as jewels, and sometimes have faces as funny as comedians. And I am proud that all creatures are fighting hard and that we are part of the same world.

A wide variety of animals and facts, but heavy as an audiobook. Hard to remember since it's fast and factual, not stories. The ocean in art sections and the spotlight species is great. I learned a lot, but it's hard to keep up without concentration.

Undeniably, the photographs were beautiful. I noticed that most species named in the book were easy to see or study. It also simplified or even oversimplified certain traits of species in question.
