A Flawed Scotsman by Hildie McQueen
Clan Ross series #4. Historical Scottish romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series. Prior characters are included but only in a peripheral way.
Ruari Ross is willing to marry for the sake of the clan, but has no interest in love. Esme Fraser is concerned with the safety of not only her clan but the townspeople and others under their protection. When an arrow hits Esme in the forest and she is left for dead, Ruari finds her. After applying his medical knowledge, he brings her back to the castle to recover. Their connection to each other grows.

Esme is often told the castle security or towns people are not her concern and to leave the matters to her father. Fortunately she’s smarter than that as she not only gets involved, but falls in love in the process. There is a reluctance as Ruari needs to realign his past and then fight the potential war that the enemy brings to the gate. Esme getting caught by the enemy is not the best move on her part!
An inviting conflict of clans and agreement of merger, for more than political reasons. ❤️

An unbelievable start, ‘A Flawed Scotsman’ started off strong with the riveting writing style that drew me into the dynamics of that time, characters and the relations they had with their family, friends, and clan members. Despite this edition being the fourth installment of the bestselling series ‘Clan Ross’, it can be considered a standalone. This is the first that I am reading from this author and surely enough, I am impressed. But if I am so impressed, why the three stars? One word: Esme.

She is a strong character that fits perfectly with Ruari. They complimented each other well but some of her actions throughout the read were reckless and literally put herself and loved ones at risk. To add on, when suspicions arose that there was a traitor among their ranks, she nearly put the blame on another clan member who traveled north to see a relative the same day she was found despite her interactions with the real traitor who left her with ‘shivers of apprehension’ and was widely known for his strong opposition to the alliance. It was quite obvious who the traitor was and it nearly baffled me on how it flew right over everyone's head.

All in all, I will continue on with this series and hope I am not as annoyed with the heroines as I was with Esme.

Very enjoyable read and some great characters.

The story was good and quite tense in places, in others harrowing, it also had some wonderfully tender and reflective moments added to the mix, in all this makes for a good read, one that keeps you turning pages to find out what’s happening next.
Great characters in Ruari and Esme, strong full of life and passion and great fun too.

My only problem was I got frustrated with the back and forth of the two, constantly running away from each other, considering it’s a two day ride, at best, from one keep to the other, I worked out they must have spent almost as much time on the road as they did together.
On the whole I enjoyed the book and my niggle is only a small one.

I look forward to reading more from the series.

Tempestuous and fast-paced, Esme Fraser could try the patience of a saint. Fortunately, Ruari Ross is well known for his quiet patience in training wild horses and knows that a firm hand is needed to bring about the required result. Sent to the Frasers to broker an alliance against the power-hungry Mackenzie, Laird Fraser wants to arrange a marriage between his daughter Esme with a Ross warrior, but it is up to Ruari to find a way to settle the matter. This novel is well written and suspenseful with plenty of action, some of which is horrifying, and through it all the attraction between Ruari and Esme grows. Despite his dependence on the larger Ross clan, Laird Fraser is hotheaded and full of pride, almost costing him the alliance he needs to keep his stronghold safe. Whilst I enjoyed this novel, I did get frustrated with Esme who vacillated between being caring and compassionate and strong-willed. I received a copy of this novel through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Ruari is my favorite and everyone else is dumb lol. A bit sad that the part of his past that comes to light kind of just falls to the back burner or had such a short anti climactic conclusion. But I guess it really aligns with his personality so I can't be mad about it. Esme was cool but there were times that she could be annoying. I was actually disappointed in all the wives in this book. People do reckless things in the name of caring but it just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Content warnings for mention of rape, torture, and kidnapping.

This started out being my favorite by this author. My the tension and suspense was like being on a roller coaster edging to the top. When you get there your heart is pounding and that is how this story was for me, through almost 70%. Instead of the thrill of dropping from the top of a roller coaster, I felt it made many detours, all because of the h.

I enjoyed the honesty and even the confusion as the h/H come to know each other. The romance builds slowly, but I liked it. Then you add the tension of another clan trying to take over it was edge of your seat time reading it.

There is one trigger moment some should be prepared for. There is a rape, off page. The aftermath is certainly felt with how the young women acts.

We don't find out why the the nearby and larger Fraser clan doesn't send men to help the smaller Fraser clan (h).

I ending became ridiculous in not only the choices the h made, but how the H handled them. The h put several clans in jeopardy by her actions. She started out through over 1/2 the story being smart, brave and great with the bow and arrow. Coupled with the wives of the leader's of the clan encouraging her to do something to put many at risks. Then we have the evil Laird of the larger clan, who wants to take over, and be becomes a pussy cat in their last dealings. Seemed out of character for him.

There is very descriptive lovemaking, within marriage described many times. Heat level 5 out of 5.

No cheating, no cliffhanger for our couple. You will wonder what happens to the h's brother and her best friend. We do get HEA, romance and plenty of steam.

This is a stand alone story, even though number 4 of the series you will not be lost. (ljb)

A Flawed Scotsman by Hildie McQueen is another in the Clan Ross series. Ruari Ross is a determined man. Determined to not marry and to care for his mother, no matter how much she seemed to hate him. Clan Fraser wants to cement their alliance by marriage, but Ruari wants no part of it until he reaches the Fraser keep and sees Esme. Even then, he has not idea she is changing his mind, but change it she does. Esme is brace, strong, and willful. She does not think before she acts and does not follow instructions well. They are less than a perfect match and during the first weeks of their marriage it is a tug-of-war to see who will best whom. Clan Fraser is in trouble. The much larger Clan Mackenzie is determined to absorb them and apparently will stop at nothing. Battles, kidnapping, rape, murder. Betrayal, truth, love, and passion all make for a complicated story that is all over the place. Suffice it to say, it works out.

Esme is a good character who grows into herself over the course of the book. Her loyalty is an endearing quality, even if she has trouble making up her mind to whom to be loyal. Ruari is so stubborn and damaged from his parents that he doesn't recognize love and that makes him a difficult character to deal with. They are a good match, once they have learned to communicate and have adjusted to one another. They overflow with passion for each other. It is an entertaining story, if somewhat discombobulated. I recommend it.

Ruari & Esme. Her father is laird of the Fraser clan (or at least one of the Fraser clans). The Mackenzie clan is wanting to control the Fraser clan. Being outmanned they reach out to the Ross clan for an alliance. Rauri is cousin to the Ross brothers (only he finds out he is their half brother having shared the same father). He is sent to the Fraser keep to discuss a possible alliance but on his way he comes across Esme. She was shot in the stomach by 2 guards that were illegally hunting and left her there to die. Returning her home (to a healer and her family) he discusses with the Laird the alliance and upon suggestion of an alliance by marriage (Lairds daughter to Ross cousin) he accepts and agrees to return from the Ross keep with 50 men that would stay at the Fraser keep as reinforcements. On their return, he sees the Mackenzie clan has attacked the Frasers. Despite being outmanned the Mackenzie are not as great as fighters. The Ross warriors join the fight and Esme refuses to leave with the other women and instead joins the battle with her bow. His brother's Fraser clan is seen coming to join the fight and the Mackenzie retreat. The Frasers find the Laird's wife and Esme's bestie were taken by the Mackenzie during the battle while trying to escape. They approach the Mackenzie for a truce but he wants Esme to marry his oldest son. Lying she tells him that she already married Ruari which upsets the Mackenzie but he realizes he was outmaneuvered. The women are returned and a temporary truce is reached however the women were assaulted while in their keep. Esme's brother Keithan is vowing revenge for what happened to the women. The book didn't drag and didn't disappoint at all.

The explosive, “Oh, my, gosh! Did that just happen!” perilous beginning set my hopes sky high as it set the stage for some dramatic, highlander romantic drama. However, for me, the rest of the book seemed to trudge along at a such a snail’s pace I became bored and impatient for plot progress to be made. I believe I lasted until Chapter 13, when I decided to chalk it all off to a likely conclusion in my own head and move on.

I wish this author continued writing success and sincerely hope others truly enjoy this book. I’m hoping to find time to backtrack and delve into the previous three books of this series. Book 1 looks especially intriguing. Thankfully they are currently on Kindle Unlimited, which increases the odds I’ll be able to do just that. This one just didn’t stay consistently riveting enough for me to see it to the verra likely predictable conclusion.

Title: A Flawed Scotsman, Series: Clan Ross, Author: Hildie McQueen, Pages: 225, pub date: 10/8/20, stand-alone but part of a series, one very steamy scene by chapter 13, more likely more after they are wed.

Book 1 - A Heartless Laird
Book 2 - A Hardened Warrior
Book 3 - A Hellish Highlander
Book 4 - A Flawed Scotsman

Stars 3.5/4 (Margaret Mallory, Julie Johnstone, Monica McCarty, Lynsay Sands, Donna Fletcher)

my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions 4. stories with family/friends

The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable. I really did like the H/H for this book.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). You get series book characters, nicely written and enjoyable.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging. The Scottish dialogue wasn’t difficult to follow and there’s also modern vocabulary. Action packed.

Laugh out loud humorous moments.

Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top, some ‘dirty’ words intertwined rightly in the story telling. Short story 2.5/5 hotness and steam.

Totally recommend author.

Will read the next book by the author.

You don’t have to read the book in order however I think you miss the true story of it’s not read in its order.

side note…i find there are missing/conclusion storylines in each book which can a little ‘sooooo what happen’.

As the abandoned child of the Laird's brother, Ruari grew up as the beloved fourth son of the Laird and his wife, feeling as if the Laird's three sons were his brothers instead of his cousins. He had all of the training and opportunities that they had., and now as a grown man he is a trusted member of the new Laird, his cousin Malcolm's council. So when an alliance is suggested by Laird Frazier, it is Ruari who is sent to negotiate the alliance and possibly marry Laird Frazier's daughter.
Esme is the outspoken, confident much loved only daughter of Laird Frazier. On his way to Frazier lands, Ruari saves Esme's life, not knowing who she is after she is shot with arrows by person unknown. From there, it it a fast paced ride as Ruari tries to help Laird Frazier to stop the MacKenzie clan from taking over their lands, find out who tried to kill Esme and uncover the spy in the clan.

Both hero and heroine were likeable, the storyline entertaining and full of twists and turns as I have come to expect from Hildie McQueen.

the only downside? While Ruari and Esme find their happy ending, I am hoping there will be another book in this series to answer all of the unanswered questions.... does Ruari ever tell his cousins the real secret of his parentage? What happened to Esme's friend Catorina and her brother, last seen hiding on MacKenzie land.

i was given the opportunity to read this book as an ARC by Netgalley in exchange for a review.

[ 3.5 stars ] A Flawed Scotsman was a pretty good story. I especially liked the main characters.

Ruari enjoys his horses and solitude. His father left when he was young and since then his mother has wanted nothing to do with him. Ruari is level-headed, strong, and honorable. Fate throws him an unexpected curve ball in the form of Esme, daughter of the Fraser laird.

I love Esme’s personality and courage. I like that she isn’t complacent like her mother just because she’s a woman. She loves her clan and wants to play an active role in keeping them safe. She speaks her mind and isn’t afraid to pick up a weapon in defense, especially from the ruthless Mackenzie clan.

Ruari and Esme mesh well together because of their shared duty and love for clan and family. They’ll do what’s right even at the expense of their own personal happiness. Their relationship isn’t always cuteness and heated passion, but sometimes too impulsive, which brought a lot of contention.

The stakes are high for the most part but some conflicts were too brief. A few transitions between scenes were jarring and disorienting. The very last scene I hated because it seemed random, ridiculous, and out of character.

I liked the story and want to read the other books in this series. If you’re looking for a good, fast-paced historical romance, this may be the book/series for you.

CW: suggested occurrence of rape, trauma

Hm I want to say I liked it but I didn't like like it, ya know? It seems all of Hildie's books leave me feeling as if something is missing by the end of each book. Perhaps I'm just not a fan of her writing style despite choosing to read her other works because I'm a lover of highlanders.🤷

Back to this book though...I did enjoy it more than the others I believe. I did really like Esme mostly. And Ruari was a pretty good hero although there wasn't much to his personality. I did feel a stronger connection between the two than I did with previous couples of the series. Even if they're getting together sexually felt too fast and lacked any emotional feeling.

I didn't like Esme putting herself in danger so impulsively and then actually laying hands on Ruari in anger. That's unexcusable to me. A slap is sufficient if needed but she did more.

So by the end of the story I wasn't much a fan of Esme as I was most of the book. She made some dumb choices and acted stubbornly and selfishly towards the end and it lowered her in my eyes. And truthfully the same can be said for Ruari too. His wishy washy attitude regarding Esme and their marriage was so unflattering. And frustrating. They were a good match for one another before they acted stupidly and after so I guess it all worked out.

Handsome, tall, muscular Ruari Ross is cousin to Malcolm, Tristan and Kieran Ross, but he prefers the company of horses, finding them easier to deal with than people, especially after a lonely upbringing.
Being drawn into a neighbouring clan's problems, Ruari is asked to meet with Laird Fraser against the threat of the MacKenzies, and while journeying to Frasers Keep, he stumbles upon a beautiful young woman who is near death in the forest, which will draw him into a new adventure and relationship that he was not prepared for.
Strong-willed, emotional and fiery, Esme Fraser is bartered in an alliance, and although she is certainly attracted and drawn to the quiet Ruari, he keeps his emotions locked tightly away.
Will love bloom between them, can they both be accepting of each other and fall in love as new secrets and danger unfold, only time will tell.
This book is so engaging and captivating, full of passion and emotion as Hildie McQueen cleverly weaves these wonderful characters through each book and their individual stories unfold. Although this book can be read as a stand alone, it is far more enjoyable to start at the beginning of his fabulous series so that you can really sink into this family's adventures and become ensconced in Hildie McQueen's beautifully descriptive writing.

This is a typical bodice-ripping type romance, but set in Scotland a bit before the Battle of Culloden, as the clan structure and frission are in full swing in this story. Also, there is a ton of "ye" and lass, etc in the verbiage of the book.

The story is about a Lairds nephew in Clan Ross who is asked to marry a Laird's daughter in Clan Fraser to strengthen ties against the savage and aggressive Clan Mackenzie.
The story moves along quickly enough and is fun to read, with some silly steamy passages.
It was a fast read for me, and I enjoyed letting the yarn spin out.
Although it is sort of historical fiction, there was less about everyday life and how things were different than in some of the best examples of HF (like Outlander). Also, some themes and thoughts were repeated unnecessarily, as though we forgot what we read in the beginning of the book. For example, Esme (the daughter) must mention that her mother thinks women should not involve themselves outside of home duties at least 4x.

Overall, as long as you understand the type of book this is going to be it can be fine to read, and I enjoyed it.
I received an ARC of this book at NC from NetGalley in exchange for this honest review.

Unloved but loved

When Rauri was a boy he was rejected by his mother after his father disappeared. He was raised by his uncle, of the clan Ross, as one of his own sons. He felt love and acceptance there but yet lonely. He is offered marriage to Esme, daughter of the Fraser clan. At first he is not interested. Then he meets her under unusual circumstances. He rescues her in the woods as some men had shot her with arrows and left her for dead. The Fraser clan has an enemy. The McKensie wants to take them over in a quest for power. Esme's mother and best friend, Catriona, is taken by the McKenzie. In exchange McKenzie wants Esme to marry one of his men. Hard choices for Esme. Rauri helps get them back along with Esme and her brother Keithen. Rauri sometimes doesn't know how to deal with her and rushes to her aid a couple times. He doesn't know how to own his feelings and because of Esme's impetuous behavior sometimes, it causes problems in their relationship. There is a lot of intrigue and kept my interest. It's a book I didn't want to put down.

Ruari Ross was abandoned by his mother and left in the care of his uncle and brought up as if he was one of that family.  He loves his cousins as if they were his brothers. His job as horse trainer for the clan gives him freedom and responsability. A message from a small clan nearby could change his life forever. Our hero's clan has had enough of war and are enjoying peace as a strong and respected clan. How easily that could change is scary.

Esme Fraser knows her clan is vulnerable, and it's dangerous to be out on her own but her pet fawn could be in trouble. Our heroine is definitely one who puts everyone above herself when thinking about safety. She has a warrior's heart in a female body.  Unfortunately for those who love her, that can cause problems.

This is an action packed historical romance with wonderful characters.  There are several times you will feel sorry for our hero's battle with unfamiliar emotions.

It's part of a series but easily read on it's own.  I have read most of the series and must now go back and pick up the one I missed.

I have loved each one.

Delightful!

This is the story of Ruari Ross and Esme. Her clan is fearing they will be invaded by a larger, stronger, enemy clan and seek alliance with the Ross clan. They propose a marriage between the daughter of the ruler, Esme, and one of the Ross clan's best men. And so the story follows Esme and Rauri as they first get together, little by little and become in love, navigating the complicated political issues of their clans' situations.

This is a nicely paced book, full of different moments and little unexpected turn of events. There is a little drama as it happens when the heroine wants to get her way but all in all this was a well written book and a pleasant read. I would have given it 4 stars, but the ending was too funny and perfect. And I loved how Esme herself was a true heroine, fighting for her people with no fear and how beautifully Rauli was always attentive and understanding, always respectful towards her. A winner!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my hones opinion.

Ruari Ross never felt the love of his real mother and father. His father left the family and his mother abandoned him to his uncle to raise. He loves his cousins as brothers and his uncle as his father. But he still missed the real family bond. Ruari was horse trainer for his uncle, as he trained the war horses and healed them when they were injured. Esme Fraser’s clan was vulnerable, and she was out traveling in the woods by herself. Trying to find her pet fawn that had escaped its pen. As she searched, two men she did not know shot her twice with arrows and left her to die in the woods. She was a feisty lass that had the heart of a warrior. She would need that to survive the cruel actions that felled her. This is an action-packed historical romance with wonderful characters, plenty of emotions to keep you on the edge of your seat. Thank you Hildie, for a great escape from everyday life and a book where I kept turning the pages.

Ruari Ross is heading to the Fraser clan to look at some horses, but also to get a glimpse of his possible future wife. On his way he comes across a woman who has been shot by arrows he tends to her and takes her to clan Fraser to find out that this is the lairds daughter.

Esme Fraser has always spoken her mind and done exactly what she wants. When she is shot with arrows and left for dead she is rescued by a handsome Highlander. Esme is not one to remain idle for long and during her recovery her and Ruari come to know each other and when it is time for Ruari to make the decision if he is going to accept the marriage they both agree to marry. What they don’t bargain on is the clash between Ruari and Esme’s father along with the constant threat from the clan Mackenzie.

Ruari will have to tame Esme’s fiery spirt to save her from herself, but does he really want to tame her. Such a good story to read! I loved Ruari and Esme! This is one story you don’t want to miss reading.

To know love

Ruari is a "cousin" to Malcolm clan Ross Laird! Esme is a Laird daughter, beautiful, willful and prone to make foolish choices!! They wed to strengthen ties between Fraser and Ross clans! Same is a very good archer but her willful disobedience could have started a war!!
Ruari has been despised and mistreated by his parents who should have loved him best!!! His mother hates the sight of him and his father revealed a secret that he did bot share even with those he loves!!
This confuses him and I think made it harder to understand and appreciate love!
The other wives gave Esme terrible advice which she follows that could have started a war! After what happens to her mother and beast friend Catriona she should have been much more careful!! The excuse of looking after her brother who a grown fearless warrior ummm not!!! Can they have a HEA when Esme is left in shame to deal with her actions with her fathers clan instead of her husband??

Ruari Ross, cousin to the laird has been sent to Clan Frasier with a show of support and the possibility of an alliance. On the way to Clan Frasier he encounters a severely wounded Esme Frasier, the laird’s daughter. She awakens to discover her rescuer is none other than the Clan Ross relative who could become her new husband if an alliance is in everyone’s best interest. I love these tow, there’s an instant attraction between and Ruari can’t help but be intrigued by her beauty and her independent and stubborn nature. Esme want to marry for love, or at least not as an obligation or duty to her clan, but she definitely has feeling for the handsome young Ross gentle warrior. I have voluntarily read and reviewed the excellent book.

Rauri and Esme

This collection is always full of excitement and adventure, loss and love. This often brutal life is portrayed in Rauri Ross's story. He is the next to wed but is given the choice to accept or deny the union. While traveling to purchase horses, he finds his intended, Esme Fraser. Esme has been shot with arrows and is hidden and close to death. Once Rauri delivers her to her family and sees the predicament her clan is in, will he make a decision to stay or leave them to fight on their own?

Great addition to series

I liked the book, but at times it was slow going. I was excited to read Ruari's book. I have liked him since reading the previous books. He has many internal battles to fight. Esme was not what I expected. In the beginning I felt she was strong and independent, but when she did not learn from her mistakes I lost interest in her. She seemed a little spoiled and childish at times.
I am looking forward to the next book in this series. I am incredibly interested in Ewan and Keithen's stories.

Laird Fraser asks for an alliance with the bigger Clan Ross when he offers his daughter, Esme, in marriage. Cousin of Laird Ross, Ruari accepts the offer of her hand sight unseen. On his way to Fraser, Ruari finds a wounded woman. The woman is Esme. The powerful attraction between Esme and Ruari will be tested many times. A lass who fights for her choice to stay with with her husband or not, will prove that love is the strongest alliance. My only complaint is how long it takes.

A Flawed Scotsman

Left as a child to be raised by his uncle by his mother and father, Ruari could not understand why his father disappeared from his life and why his mother never wanted to see him. She always told him to leave and never come back to see her. His uncle loved him and his cousins were like brothers to him. When his wife told him she loved him, he was unsure what love was.

Thrilling Highland Romance⚔️:
This is a complex highly emotional story of discovering what love is all about.
It fully encompassed me from the start and kept me glued to my seat.
Terrific writing where the pages were filled with mystery, tension, betrayal, clan feuds,
several passionate scenes, a few shocking discoveries, and a heart pounding ending.
Each book in this series is top notch and I encourage you to read the entire series.
Adult Highland Story.
❤️I loved every minute of it.

Too too much pornography

Another good story ruined with foul language and filthy sex...at least there was no homosexual content. Stick that in your gut Amazon!!!!! Sorry Hoodie I forgot you were one of those Steamy writers. I will remove you as one of my authors. But hey if you can get past the way too much sex and foul language it's a good story.

Such a sweet story

I loved their sweet story of love and regaining trust together. The last paragraph in this book made the entire novel for me. I felt it was a little more stagnant than the other stories in this series but y’all the last chapter. Total redemption. Loved R and E. They were a beautiful couple.
