In a future world where the Wild West never died, a troubled gunslinger must let go of the past before everything she loves goes up in flames.

When twelve-year-old Cameron Hale watched helplessly as her mother was gunned down, she swore she’d have her revenge. Now she’s a jaded twenty-three-year-old with a painful past and too many secrets.

After nearly a year of tracking her mother’s killer across the territories, all she has to show for her efforts are a handful of dead end leads and the gnawing sense that her mission has put her family back in the killer's cross hairs. To make matters worse, a chance encounter with Luke Kendrick, a rugged former soldier with a penchant for questions, threatens to turn her self-contained world upside down.

Luke has never been one to shy away from a challenge and Cameron is exactly the kind of mystery he can’t turn his back on. But when tragedy strikes his quiet village, she’s the only one he can turn to for help and convincing her to trust him won’t be easy.

Despite her wariness, Cameron knows teaming up with Luke might be her best move, but with her sisters’ lives hanging in the balance, one more mistake could cost her everything.

Heroan is the exciting first book in The Hale Gunslingers alternate history western adventure series.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for awarding me with this ARC.
Now, my own honest opinion.

I'm going to give this book 4 stars. I love the originality of the story. The author paints quite a clear picture of the world Cameron resides in though I do feel as if we could've been given a bit more of a background. I think more will be revealed in book 2, however, it would've been great if the author had elaborated a little more.
I also really enjoyed all the characters, they are fun and different, each unique in their own ways with their own history. I love the interactions, friendships and budding romances that develop along the way. A really fun and entertaining read, I finished reading in about two or three days.

However, there is a reason why this book has 4 stars and not 5. The book sometimes feels quite rushed and at sometimes real slow. I wish the author would've taken a bit more time for the built-up in the beginning. In the beginning it feels really rushed at some points and it feels almost slow going towards the end. I feel as if there could've been a better balance. The book also at times feels a little childish in the way certain scenes or characters are approached/written. It doesn't make me like the book any less though.

All in all this book will attract a large fan base, I'm sure of it. I really enjoyed reading it and I can't wait for the sequel!

***I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review***

First, full disclosure. I only read half of Heroan. You may think that I shouldn’t write a review for a book I didn’t finish, but let me explain.

In my opinion, this is not a book meant for adults and I did not sign up to read something written for teens. If it wasn’t for the gory, detailed, violence, I’d say for sure this was meant for a younger audience because it has all the trademarks of a children’s book, but as it stands, I’m very conflicted about Heroan. I don’t know if I should review it as an adult-novel or as a teen-read. So I guess I’ll do both.

From a teen perspective, this is a perfectly fine, action-filled story about a young woman set out to avenge the murder of her mother eleven years prior. In a dystopian future, where life has reverted back to the likes which were found in the Old West, you get to follow her on her path to track down this vicious, evil killer. The pace of the story is pretty fast and there are many forward jumps which increases the pace further.

I like that the main character is a really strong young woman. Girls absolutely need that kind of empowering reads. I also liked that Cameron didn’t let her attraction to a guy get in the way of her mission, or make her totally silly and girly. However, the overly descriptive violence is a bit inappropriate for a kids read, but maybe it would be suitable for 15-16 year-olds?

As a more distinguishing, adult reader though, Heroan doesn’t cut it.

The book is entirely driven by events and descriptive action, not by the characters, and their perceptions. In fact, the characters are just crude outlines of people with very little personality to them. And the book starts off with a barrage of back-story which is pretty much the exemplification of a mistake made by inexperienced authors. Even the dialogue is mostly used as a way to provide even more back-story, not as a means to get to know the characters.

That’s really the main thing lacking in Heroan, character development. There’s nothing wrong about that way of writing per se, but in an adult novel it usually doesn’t work. I need to feel connected to the characters. I need to feel I care for them and their fate or, at the very least, are fascinated by them. They need personalities and depth which I’m sorry to say is sorely lacking.

There are also quite a few unrealistic portrayals and plot-holes that pulled me out of the book. The world-building for one. It’s supposed to be dystopian, but what should have been a hard life is glossed over and instead it is portrayed as rather quaint rather than challenging. Also, there are very few hints to confirm the dystopian future-part. Hardly any technology, only nice and fresh forest country.

Then there are quite a few instances where Cameron just acts way illogical. The most blatant one being that she apparently follows her target by foot going on instincts alone. Another one is assuming that a bad guy that got away decided to run instead of waiting somewhere nearby just waiting to pick her off.

The clashes between sudden bouts of graphic violence and the rest of the picturesque setting is maybe a stylistic choice the author made. But to me is doesn’t fit. If the Heroan world is so obviously violent, the people in it shouldn’t be so naively ignorant and unprepared.

In conclusion, I give Heroan a rating of 4 as a teen-read, and a 2 as an adult read. I’m not going to lie, I’m very disappointed. I love a good dystopian novel. This just wasn’t it.

This is my first review for Booksirens at www.booksirens.com a similar platform to Netgalley and I believe quite bit newer.

Heroan is marketed as adult action-packed dystopian western with a bad-ass female main character. That sounded right down my alley, but there were a few things that I didn't enjoy.

I knew going in that there would be quite a bit of violence and graphic scenes, but putting your female character in attempted rape situations and the flashbacks she experiences gets really on my nerves in books and Heroan isn't the only book that does that.
I am sick and tired of rape being used to showcase and underline how bad a man is. There are so many other ways. Yes we all know that rape is one of the most horrific acts a man can commit to destroy a woman's life. Don't use it too lightly.

I liked Luke as a character, but I rolled my eyes at the smart pet wolf. This seems to become a trope now. The characters lacked depth and development and were just your stereotypical side characters and not very memorable.

The world building isn't enough to make me believe it's dystopian and made me wonder what part is so special about it. The misogyny is certainly still there and it feels that the world went clearly backwards - a lot.
I also didn't buy Cameron's "instinct" to follow her killer around on foot in this world and the choices she made didn't make sense many a times, which annoyed me.

There are definitely some good parts I take away from the story, but I don't think I will be continuing on with the series.

Thank you Booksirens for giving me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow, I can not wait for the next book in this series. One of the things I loved about this book is that its different from anything else I've encountered. It's a dystopian novel that due to past events has made the future return to the old west, yes, horse-drawn carriages and gunslingers. The book had lots of twists and turns and since it, a futuristic world that we aren't familiar with it was very unpredictable. I loved the development of the characters and the sneak peeks into their history that made them who they are. When I finished the book I wanted to know when the next book was coming out as I would have read it right away if I could have. The writing was intriguing, interesting, kept you engaged the whole time, and flowed easily. I tried to find more books by this author and I think this is her first. If so she will be an author to watch for. I will be anxiously waiting for more.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

A quick and fun escapist read. Although the story focuses on Cameron's mission to find her mother's killer, I found myself really enjoying the later camaraderie between Cam and her sisters, and sort of wished that it had come earlier in the book. Overall an easy story to dive into and would recommend for a bit of leisurely enjoyment.

My thanks to Casey Bering and Voracious Readers Only for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Heroan tells the story of the Brave Cameron Hale, a descendant from a series of gunslingers who are famous for their precision and ruthlessness when confronting an adversary. But of course, the story of the Hale family is full of secrets, as there is more than just what can be perceived from the gunslingers' legends.

If you're a fan of fast-paced stories, full of well-written action, a touch of romance, and an incredibly smart dog, then Heroan IS the book for you.

Cam's internal and external fight with the demons of her past will keep you entertained through the entire reading, and her journey to trust and love someone besides her own family will endear you to her.

Casey Bering is able to perfectly transmit with her words the emotional difficulties of someone marked by pain during her childhood, and her ability to write action scenes is incredible. On point, easy to read and understand, with good transitions and the right pace.

I will definitely be waiting for the next installment of this series.

Heroan is a great dystopian read. Not a genre I read a lot but I love western and the word gunslinger got my attention. Finding out the gunslinger was a female lead character sold me. The book is well written, easy to follow when the viewpoint changes . There are several twists, lots of action, lots of chemistry, even though there is no on page sex, the romance sizzles. Kinley the wolf is an awesome companion and a main character in her own right.
I. Loved this story and book two can't get here soon enough!

Very few people know about the mysterious lineage of the Hale sisters. Not only are they all named after men but they are gunslingers. A secret that could cost them their lives.

When Cameron's mother was murdered right before her eyes she was determined to seek revenge as soon as she was old enough.

Along her way of trailing Declan, the murderer, Cameron meets Luke. An attraction that is put aside until later. Together their journey begins.

Absolutely loved this story! A twist from your normal western. Gunslingers, bounty hunters, warrants (thugs), trains and horse carriages.

A great introduction yo a new series and a new author. Can't wait for next installment about the other Hale sisters!

I finished this book in under 48 hours and even that wasn’t quick enough. I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end - there was no period in the beginning where I had to wait before I was hooked and it ended way to soon. They shift of POV’s were seamless and I was never left to guess which POV I was reading from which was really nice. I loved how independent and strong Cameron was throughout the whole novel, even with her tumulus past and the strong walls she built around her heart. My only complaint is that I think the ending was a little sloppy/too quick like the author was in a rush to finish this book. Overall this novel was written beautifully and the turn of information about Declan at the end of the book took me by complete surprise. I can’t wait to read more novels from this author and to complete this series!!

I did receive this as a complimentary novel from voraciousreadersonly.com and from the author herself.

Future but feels like the past

I really enjoyed this book. It takes place in 2045 but it feels like the wild west. It has gunslinger with pistols but they have some modern touches with running water and lights. I can't wait to read the next book in the future.

Cameron is a gunslinger, a sort of post apocalyptic unmasked Batman who's weapon saavvy. She's used to being underestimated because of her gender. She's used to men being bad guys. That's all until she meets Luke and his wolf, Kinley.
The chemistry and comraderie is great. The writing moves the story along at a brisk pace. However, there's always something that leaves a bad taste in my mouth with books that linger over rape scenes. If you're likely to be triggered, don't pick up this book.
It's a solid piece of writing. My only noted drawbacks are the sexual violence scenes (like, can we get one kick-ass heroine who hasn't been violated by the patriarchy?) and the fact that there's very little satisfaction provided. The will they or won't they hit the sheets is left very much up in the air. The bad guys is wounded but lives to see another day.

A great start to a series about six sisters. They are all gunslingers following a family tradition. Given names that sound like boys, almost nobody knows that they're female. They live in a future where much technology has been lost. Cameron is the oldest. She sets out to find the man who killed her mother. I can't wait to read about the other sisters. Roland Deschain, move over!

Heroan is a blend of Western and Dystopian with a bit of off-page romance.

Cam is a gunslinger/bounty hunter. A tiny little woman who packs a whole lot of fight. She is tracking down the sadistic and very bloodthirsty man who murdered her mother. Her travels intersect with Luke, a curious retired military man who still holds some of the old values.
After a heart-wrenching tragedy, they find themselves on the same course.
To stop a killer.

We follow Cam and Luke as they track the killer using the barbarity left in his wake as a guide. The story is filled with action and violence and a bit of suspense. The antagonist is highly intelligent and very very bloodthirsty. I always felt like he was one step ahead.
The relationship between Cam and Luke carries slight romantic undertones but IMO they were more of a bounty team.

The pace is a bit like a coaster some very high moments with the occasional lull to catch your breath while somehow keeping the reader right on edge the whole time.
This felt more like a lawless western than a solid dystopian so that is that category I am putting it in.
I still am not sure how this world came to be and it did not always carry that dystopian feel whereas the western flavor was always abundant.
Overall the author did a solid job of setting the stage with Heroan for future releases in the Hale Gunslinger series.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

First off, nice cover pic. And what a cool concept for a story. A secret female line of gunslingers! Cameron and Luke (and Kinley) are all likeable characters. But the execution....well. I struggled here. The book started off strong, but as it progressed, the flaws became more obvious. The world-building was lacking. The character development was non-existent, the arrangement of background/flashback and current story were awkward. And why are they spending weeks on weeks walking to hurriedly catch evil killer Declan? This book tried to be too many genres (romance, dystopian, western sci-fi, thriller, YA) without succeeding in any one. It could have been improved by focusing on one.

As other reviews have mentioned, this book might be more appropriate for the YA audience. I don't think they would be bothered by the idiosyncrasies as much.

*I received an ARC from Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review*

Heroan by Casey Bering is a story set in a “Wild West” setting about a girl named Cameron Hale who is out seeking vengeance for her murdered mother. Along the way, she meets Luke, who she teams up with, and Kinley, who becomes her pet wolf.

Although I normally don’t read books with similar settings, this was a really fun read for me. I loved how Cameron was never the “damsel in distress” who can be found in a lot of books promised to have a bad-a** female protagonist. Although Luke was valuable to her mission, she definitely saved him more than he saved her!

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves action and girl power books.

Set in 2045, this dystopian western features Cameron Hale who is from a long line of female gunslingers. She is in the process of tracking someone called Declan when a small town massacre occurs where members of Luke's family are included in the victims. Luke and his loyal wolf Kinley come together with Cameron in a mission to find the culprit, who may well be the very person that Cameron was tracking. Good character development, in this first of series book, which helps you to feel involved in the story. Setting the scene was also good, and you can easily imagine that you are there with them. A recommended read that I would pursue with future books in the series. Many thanks to the author and VRO for my complementary copy.

Interesting and gritty tale. Cameron was from the line of Hale Gunslingers and was hunting Declan for revenge. She came upon Luke, and the two became friends and more as they tracked their foe. Cameron was a strong, determined young woman doing what she does best. Luke joined her after finding his family and village burned, and he brought along his companion, an intelligent she-wolf. They complemented each other, and it was quite a journey. The story did not really end as the hunt continues for Declan, with the help of Cameron's sisters.

Suddenly there were only 5 pages left?!?!?! Loved this book! Reminiscent of The Dark Tower (high praise from me) in certain aspects, and with the easy, exciting read of a romance novel. I loved the plot, the characters, the setting- all of it. My one niggling thing is the timeline? This leaves me with some questions, which I’m hoping will have answers revealed as the series progresses and we have more and more of this world exposed. As a stand alone, this was a great story. If it goes as I anticipate it will, it’ll be an over-arching epic that blows my mind (PLEASE DO THIS). I’m impatiently waiting book 2.

I really enjoyed this book. From the beginning, the story jumps right in and then the layers are peeled back through the book so we get the backstory. Looking forward to learning more about these characters in book 2. I did feel like the ending came a bit too quick - the story built up to that final confrontation and I felt it was over too soon. I did like that tease for what’s to come at the end though. But overall, a great start to what I think is a great story.

Absolutely loved this book. Action and adventure. The characters were well drawn and came alive to me. I loved the strength and power of Cameron. We can't have too many books with strong women characters. The idea of a legacy of female gunslingers protecting the small towns and fighting for justice in a post apocalyptic world makes for a great story. I will anxiously await book 2 coming out next year.

I wanted to like this book, but the characters were just not well developed enough. The book was completely plot-driven, and I just couldn’t bring myself to care what horrible thing happened next to the characters because they were so flat. Nice idea of a book, just not well-executed.

I edited this book and received a copy for free, so this is my honest review as both an editor and a reader)

I absolutely adored this book. Everything about it is wonderful. The characters are well-written, deep, and relatable. The plot is interesting, a slow burn that pays off in the end. I usually don’t like westerns, but this book completely changed my opinion. It’s SO good.

Luke is a heartthrob for me, and I instantly loved his character. Charming, fierce, and badass, he added so much character and dark humor to every page. Cameron was a great main character to follow and not your typical “good guy” which I appreciated. They complemented each other and left me wanting more. They felt so real.

I don’t say this lightly, but this book is honestly one of the best I’ve ever read. Every word, every page, every event is absolutely fantastic and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

If you want well-written character, epic dialogue, an interesting and engaging plot, and an ending that isn’t “everything works out in the end” then read this. You won’t be disappointed.
