Summary:

Do you feel lucky, or unlucky?

That’s the question Doug Kenner asks himself over and over again as tragedy after tragedy strikes his family. But, what if its more than luck? What if something more sinister is at work? With three tragedies striking his family three years in a row, each more intense than the last, Doug and his family face the possibility that something supernatural is after them. The question is, why? And why do they keep happening around his daughter Sophie’s birthday?

From the Amazon:

“A series of unexplainable tragedies surround a family and their young daughter as they seek to determine whether they are possessed, paranoid or collectively going insane. Meanwhile, forgotten clues from the father’s past may indicate forces are at work in ways more ominous than any of them could have imagined.”

What I liked:

Dan demonstrates once again an amazing imagination and unique tactic at storytelling. This is a gripping story of a family man pushed to his limits to find out what he believes and what he holds dearest.

There are some truly hair-raising events in this story that have rightly brought to other reviewers minds’ a parallel to Stephen King’s The Shining.

I don’t think I’ve come across a book quite like this one. It has a powerful potential to be a great supernatural thriller that everyone will talk about for years to come. That’s comparing it with the likes of King and Koontz.

What I didn’t like:

I stress that it has the potential for greatness, but it falls short. Dramatically short, for me.

Where does the flaw lie? To my eye, in the editing. I say to my eye, because others may read this book and not find any problem where I found much.

The narrative over-explains events, under-develops a few characters, and takes a subplot nowhere.

That last bit might be a bit harsh. There are elements of the subplot that do play into the overall story in important ways, but these elements could have been woven into other areas of the story without the subplot and not lost anything. It was a bit disappointing, because there is a lot of potential in this subplot to take the whole story to the next level of story greatness.

Conclusion:

Can I recommend this book?

There are quite a few readers out there that are loving this book. You can see them on Amazon. And they all have a great point.

I want to love this book. I grew up reading King and Koontz. This is my kind of story.

I just can’t, though. The errors I mentioned above (on top of some basic repetitiveness and distracting word choices) make it difficult.

Still, I say go read it. You may not get hung up on these things I mention in this review. You might be like the many who have loved it and raved about it. If you do, good. Good for you and good for Dan.

For me? I’ll look wistfully in the distance wondering about what could have been.

Disclosure: I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this book was entertaining and thought provoking. I enjoyed this book. The story flowed well and I could not but it down. I survived two hurricanes and I was a Catholic, so I could relate to this story. Dan is a great story teller and I look forward to reading his next book.

I really enjoyed the audio book version of this story and thought the narrator had a very good voice and reading style.

The style of this book reminded me a bit of Stephen King's book It where he goes back in time to the children's childhoods for pieces of the story which help to explain how the events in the book all fit together in the end.

Alatorre's main character, Doug, is an ordinary man with a good job and a lovely family. He adores his wife and small daughter and enjoys spending time with them and going on family holidays.

The story starts with an unexpected and nearly tragic incident in the parking lot at a wine farm which appears initially to be frightening, but not completely out of the ordinary; accidents and tragedies do happen in life.  When Doug starts to realise that this latest incident is another in a seeming series of similar events, he starts to wonder what is happening to his family. Is this normal or is there more to these near tragedies than meets the eye?

Doug sets out to investigate the matter and learn more about why these incidents are occurring.  His investigation leads him to a priest at his local Catholic Church and other interesting characters who delve into the world of spirituality and the occult. Something out there doesn't like his attempted intervention though and is determined to step up its efforts to achieve its goals.

Very creepy and yet written with a sense of possibility that makes it all the more eerie, Dan Alatorre conveys his story in a way that really plays on the readers emotions and imagination.

I rated this book five out of five stars.

4 outta 5:
Editing fails, detail repetition practically worded the same way, some poorly timed comic relief, and a few things that were unclear and/or never finalized.
BUT it was was a food for thought novel philosophically and theologically, and over all made for a good story.

The book follows a couple with a young daughter who seem to run into tragedies around the same time every year. This happens to be around their daughters birthday. They begin to realise that these incidents can’t be mere coincidence and seem to be something more. That coupled with horrific reoccurring nightmares that both of the parents are sharing, spurs them into action to try and figure out what’s happening before it’s too late.

This book had me hooked from the very beginning! That first chapter literally had me on the edge of my seat. I was right there with the characters.

The characters were likeable and easy to follow and the plot of the book was gripping throughout. I enjoyed the flashbacks and that helped tie the story up in the end. I loved the supernatural elements too.

Those last 50 pages or so and that ending!! I was thoroughly impressed with this book.

If you like paranormal, mystery thrillers I’d definitely recommend this to you.

I chose to read and review this supernatural thriller with a twist by Dan Alatorre because I am a great fan of his work. The last book I read, ‘Poggibonsi’ nearly had me splitting my sides, I laughed so much. There is always such a strong human element to his writing, which adds to the magic.

From the brilliant opening chapter, I knew this book would be good. The unusual chapter arrangement threw me at first, but I soon realised how well it gradually ramped up the tension.

Parts of the story were traumatic, enforcing the deep and dark theme of this book, despite being about a happy family unit. The main characters, Doug, Mallory and their daughter Sophie are portrayed so well, you feel you have known them all for years, and makes what happens to them all the more terrifying and exciting to read.

The supernatural element was handled well, really down to earth stuff that will raise the hair on the back of your neck time and again.

Near the end of the book was another shocking chapter, and then the unbelievably terrifying footage of being caught in a storm. So well depicted, I felt soaked to the skin and scared to death as the lightning rent the air.

Not many books have me cheering at the end, but this one did, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good thriller!

Angel On Her Shoulder
by
Dan Alatorre
I received a free copy of this novel from the author for an honest review.
I loved this novel.
The storyline is tight and moves along without any hesitations or disruptions to the flow.
It is built around a family. Doug, the father, Mallory, the mother and Sophie their little girl.
Strange occurrences with disastrous consequences happen around this family and lead Doug the father to seek help from first the church and later on independent help.
The story follows Doug as he searches for help amidst a backdrop of a hurricane brewing and the seedier side of his town.
The backstory is skilfully weaved in and at times the writer can be likened to Stephen King in how he tells the excerpts of Doug's early life which have bearing on the story.
The ending of the story is a real page turner and I hope there might be a second novel to come.
The writing is excellent, the pace fast and the characters extremely believable. He could be writing about your family or your next door neighbours.
I couldn't put this book down.
If you love mysteries with a supernatural twist then you will love this novel as much as I did.
Highly recommended.

Not About The Paranormal

If anything, I’d say this story is mostly about Christian religious beliefs with regard to good vs evil (protagonist is a lapsed Catholic) with a melange of supernatural/divine elements and entities thrown in—Voudou, relic veneration, etc. It’s difficult to explain without dropping more spoilers, so I’ll leave it at that.
I was hoping for paranormal with horror elements, but this wasn’t it. Also, I was not frightened whilst reading, so this is not even close to Stephen King’s “The Shining” or even “Doctor Sleep.” Not to mention Clive Barker’s books.
For about 1/3 of the book, I kept reading, because I thought the author was working up to the frightening bits. What made me skim-read were reiterations of backstory during in the flashback chapters.

“That car hit her and she flew right up in the air!”

Author and humorist Dan Alatorre became a first-time dad at the age of 47 - a daughter by the name of Savvy. His comedic debut book "Savvy Stories" tells humorous tales about a loving dad who sees the magic in children, and isn't a bumbling stooge about changing diapers like some TV sitcom. Dan was born in Ohio, and graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida before earning an MBA from Tampa College. Dan, Michele and Savvy live in the Tampa area. Beware! There is a problem with reading Dan Alatorre's book - Savvy Stories Series: They are addicting. Few writers today have that keen gift for finding the humor in challenging situations and Dan has a secure place at the top of the heap for comedic writing. He knows how youngsters think, and better ye he knows how to appreciate their joyful outlook ...and wisdom.

Now. After his many successes in writing humor Dan turns his attention to the paranormal/ghost/psychic/suspense book genre – and here he succeeds just as well. His talent is so fluent that after the first few pages deciding whether or not Dan is capable of entering ‘the dark night’ is succinctly answered positively: ‘“Call 911! CALL 911!” The man’s shouts ripped through the tasting room of scenic Hillside Winery. At the counter, Mallory lowered her brochures for 2017 vintages and glanced over her shoulder, unable to see who had called out. The other customers, two dozen or so elderly tourists and a smaller group that called the server by name, were looking around, too. With confusion working its way into their expressions, nobody moved or called 911. The man’s voice rose, straining with fear and urgency as his words boomed down the hallway and spilled over them. “Somebody call 911! There’s been an accident in the parking lot!” A robust fellow, gray at the temples but broad in the shoulders and belly, pushed away from the tasting counter and headed toward the shouts. “Martin.” The woman next to him reached out for his arm. “Don’t. You’re not on duty.” He didn’t break stride. “A cop is never off duty.” Rejoining the others at the granite countertop, his wife muttered to herself but for the benefit of anyone within earshot. “Retired ones are.” Mallory set down her Virginia Wine Country pamphlets and smiled at the woman. The officer’s wife sighed, having found a willing audience. “He just can’t relax. He’ll—” “Jenny!” From the window, Martin wheeled around, his eyes wide. “Tell the bartender to call an ambulance. Now! Tell them there’s an accident with severe injuries and we may need a medevac unit.”

Where does this opener lead? The very terse synopsis offers a hint – ‘A series of unexplainable tragedies surround a family and their young daughter as they seek to determine whether they are possessed, paranoid or collectively going insane. Meanwhile, forgotten clues from the father's past may indicate forces are at work in ways more ominous than any of them could have imagined.

So Dan Alatorre can summon the chills and thrills of a supernatural horror story. Where will he take us next?

A captivating paranormal tale- would recommend...

An Angel on Her Shoulder by Dan Alatorre and narrated by David Bosco is a captivating paranormal tale with religious undertones. It has a Supernatural-esque feel to it, so if you are a fan of that show, give this a try.

The narrator, David Bosco, was exceptional as usual! I’ve made it clear in previous reviews I am a fan of his narration and look forward to his future books and how he progresses as a narrator. David enunciates well and has an easy to follow pace. I highly recommend him.

What to expect: Doug and his family (wife Mallory & daughter Sophie) have odd/scary things happen to them at the same time every year (I won’t go into specifics due to spoilers). There is a creepiness to it, but not a jump out of your seat type. Friendships, family, the unknown, clairvoyance, religion, and general life events/outings are present throughout. The book has a slower build- stick with it and I doubt you will be disappointed. The story is told between the past and present time (I had no problems with the changing back and forth as it’s very clear when it changes).

Despite the religious aspect, it was not preachy. It may or may not have you thinking/questioning the “what ifs” that have happened in your life. I really enjoyed the parts when Doug was a kid (at times it added humor to the story). I wish some of the characters would have came along sooner (Tyree).

A couple things I didn’t care for:
1) The emotional annoying wife cliché. Maybe if she had some character development I’d feel different? Or played a larger role at the end? Whatever the reason, she didn’t sit well with me.
2) There were a couple parts I wish had a little more to them.

I would listen to another book if a sequel was in the works. Overall, I recommend, especially if you enjoy paranormal religious themes.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: religion (Christianity, angels, demons), suicide of mother and her baby via train, voodoo, Hitler talk (killing him hypothetically via a game kids made up), kid sees murders or attempted murder, someone is injured from a automobile, adults drinking (not in excess). It’s possible I missed some as once I got into the story, it was difficult to remember to write stuff down.
Words: S-word x4, F-word x2, h3llx24, crap x9, damn x21.

It's very well written, the characters are likeable and sympathetic and it's mostly well paced.

The reason for the 3* review is a couple of large plot points that simply do not make sense. We jump from the accident at the winery to the realisation of there now being three incidents that somehow suddenly means they are wondering if their daughter is possessed (?!) and a sudden race against time. It felt as though a chunk of the book near the beginning had been removed. How/why was it suddenly so urgent?

It was very difficult to believe in, thus support, this race against time because there was simply no reason for it. It even started BEFORE the reoccurring nightmares of both parents were even mentioned.

Also their child is four. That means that there could not have been an incident for each birthday - the first happened when she was born, the second must have happened when she was 3 and the third on her fourth birthday. So there were actually two years between the first and second incident, not every year as they keep saying.

Plus the police believe that a murder has taken place. Tyree just buggered off without saying "Don't worry about investigating, it's just pigs blood".

Those were the main problems for me. It really feels like an earlier draft was pruned a little bit too much, some dark occurance between the winery and the visit to the church that would have given some reason to everyone's behaviour which would have kept the tension up.I

I read mainly horror. I am more than happy to pretend to believe the unbelievable simply for enjoyment but only if there's some thread of logic to everything. Plot holes are like missing teeth, my brain will not stop probing and poking at them like a tongue which simply spoils everything and leaves me annoyed. Especially when it's from a writer who is obviously talented.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This was the second book I read by Dan Alatorre and let me say it was legit. A man and his family tend to be surrounded by tragedies. But not normal tragedies that we all tend to face one time or another. These are tragedies that happen around the same time every year. Desperate for answers, our main character, Doug, will stop at nothing until he gets them.

An Angel on Her Shoulder is a beautifully written story that keeps you turning the pages. It does go back and forth between the present day and Doug’s childhood a few times, which at first, made it confusing because there were no dates letting you know that we’ve traveled to the past. You’ve have to read a little bit to realize it. However, later on, it didn’t bother me as much. I suppose I had to get used to it. Eventually, the way the childhood chapters were told were so smooth, my mind immediately clicked to the scene at hand. Especially chapter thirty-three.

The tension in the story was slow building, but not in a bad way at all. It was actually a very good way to tell the story. It leaves you with wanting more and then slams you with tension every so often until you reach the final conclusion.

The characters were extremely likeable and realistic, especially Doug. He’s just a normal husband, a normal dad, that wants to do right by his family and take care of them by any means necessary. Even if it means stepping way out of his comfort zone in search of questions for a confusing situation.

The only thing I would have suggest would be to erase the final sentence on the last page. I won’t say what it was, but I feel the inclusion of the final sentence diminishes the wow-factor.

Overall, this book is definitely worth the read.

An Angel on Her Shoulder by Dan Alatorre
Book starts out with praise from others and table of contents.
Story starts out with a few things alternating chapters that don't make sense. As time goes on you can understand it so stick with it.
Events follow a husband and wife and young daughter as they all have dreams and things are happening that make them feel weird, lucky but they were so close to dying.
Other story that has alternating chapters is about young teen age boys as they grow up near Indiana. Funny thing about these stories is they mimic much of the way we grew up in New England as we had tons of relatives and kids to play with as we lived next door to one another. Always something to do, to get intro trouble.
Husband seeks help from a priest then a seeker who has answers that help explain things, til they don't.
Lots of adventure and magical mysterious things happen along the trail, they will keep you on your toes.
Enjoyed the read although it's not one of my favorite genres. I'd read more from this author because of his style of writing. Liked the religious interventions and prayers along the way.
Section on the author is included at the end.
Other works by the author are highlighted and summarized at the end.
I received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

How do you explain tragic events which occur around the same time every year and seem to revolve around your daughter? That's the quandry Doug is placed in as he tries to protect his family and keep his daughter safe. At first, he seeks out guidance from a Catholic priest, which provides more questions than answers. Doug, in his turmoil to help his family, seeks out a voodoo practitioner and then someone from the internet (who actually became one of my favorite characters). Each one provides a bit of fodder for Doug to chew on and compelling for the reader. This was a fascinating way to provide Doug some introspection.

As other reviewers have noted, there are flashbacks to Doug's childhood. The initial flashback is a bit jarring but as you get into the story, you begin to understand the integral role Doug's childhood and his best friend play in current events.

This was a very interesting puzzle to put together. But, it's not just a mystery - there's plenty of action and it's set during a hurricane, which adds its own set of complications.

The narrator, David Bosco, is a recent and wonderful find for me. He so ably transported me into this story, such that I listened to it in one sitting.

[My review is for the Audible audiobook format.]

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book just going by its title. Usually I gravitate towards grittier genres: dystopian, post-apocalyptic, scifi, and the like. But two-thirds of the way through, I was surprised to find myself curious about how things would end for the main character's family.

Starting off, the reader is taken back to Doug's youth where hints elude to Doug having a 'sixth sense' of sorts. As an adult, he, his wife and their young daughter experience instances of what they call bad luck, only it happens at the same time every year. And sometimes someone gets hurt. Doug is on a mission to find the source of these events and keep his family safe. But who will help him? Will he find answers before someone else gets hurt... or killed?

Because this isn't my usual type of read, I can't think of what to compare it with. But it did hold my interest, and it was as sweet as it was suspenseful. The writing was good and flowed well. David Bosco's narration added depth to Alatorre's story and was well delivered. Overall, pretty good!

I was provided a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for my unbiased review. Many thanks for this opportunity!

If bad things kept happening to your family at the same time every year, would you chalk it up to mere coincidence or something else? That's the dilemma facing Doug. Forced to consider the possibility that dark forces may be at work, Doug begins seeking out answers and comes to a frightening realization. His family is in danger and they're running out of time.

Just when the story was really getting good, I realized that it was already late at night. I kept thinking that I'd just listen to one more chapter and then go to bed. Well, that didn't quite work out because I stayed up until 3am, having to get to the ending. The suspense kept building to the thrilling climax and left me satisfied when I finished. There was no shortage of interesting characters along the way, both good and evil. The religious element was important to the plot but it was not done in an overly preachy way. This was great storytelling and I thoroughly enjoyed it. David Bosco's performance really brought the characters and story to life, adding to my enjoyment. I loved this supernatural thriller and would recommend it.

When I select books to read and listen to (disclaimer: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review) there is frequently a lag before I get a chance to actually enjoy them and I will forget what they were about. So it is always a delightful surprise to me when I discover a truffle within the colorful wrapper.

This was an interesting tale to be finishing just after Easter, the most important day in the liturgical year for Christians, since it involves and explores questions of faith within its thriller wrappings. Generally I was delighted with David Bosco's narration but do not agree with his characterization of the wife as sort of whiny. Otherwise, his pacing and voicing was excellent and highlighted the fascinating text admirably. There are a couple of characters whose stories cried out for their own book (Jimmy and Tyree)--in fact I can visualize this one on the big screen or a TV series . . . I'd love to know if you feel the same way!

Couldn’t put it down!

Bad things keep happening to Doug. Mallory and their four-year-old daughter, Sophie – well almost anyway. Every year around the time of Sophie’s birthday an almost tragedy occurs that is always narrowly averted. This year it was particularly frightening. Doug and Sophie could have been crushed by an out-of-control pickup truck at a winery if not for a last-minute diversion. Discussing the near catastrophe, Doug and Mallory see a frightening pattern and look for help from the most unusual sources.

The book is a thriller from page one. Dan Alatorre weaves a plot with events that could be either coincidence or supernatural. Is this normal family terrorized or just paranoid? It’s a fine line with suspense that builds to the conclusion. I liked the relatable characters. Doug and Mallory reacted to the threats like any parents would and Sophie was a typical four-year-old.

I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary – an excellent book!

Dan Alatorre evokes suspense that grows and deepens into horrific evil.
Since the birth of their daughter, dangerous events occur at the same time yearly for a better-than-ordinary family, Doug, Mallory, and their 4-year-old Sophie. They slowly begin to question the cause as paranormal: does Sophie somehow create the disasters, or is a dark force stalking them? Doug seeks answers from a local priest, a voodoo mamba and finally finds a battle partner in John Tyree (a favorite character from another book). All the experts agree that the precocious little girl has a pure angel on her shoulder protecting them from the ever-increasing danger ... or maybe it’s a dark, demonic angel trying to destroy them. The ultimate showdown is a heart-pounding, gut-wrenching good vs. evil battle of epic proportions. I love every Alatorre book I’ve read, but this one might be my all-time favorite. A great read!

Engaging Paranormal Read!

This book is a solid read for anyone who likes to read the paranormal genre especially stories that take time building to the plot. The backstory unfolds gradually and intentionally, revealing just enough at each stage to keep you turning pages while leading naturally into how the events of the story came to be.
I really appreciated how the author layered the past with the present instead of dumping information all at once. That slow reveal made the unfolding mystery more satisfying and gave the story a strong sense of momentum leading to the climax.
The ending, in particular, stood out to me. It provided the closure I need in stories, yet it was written cleverly enough to leave the door open for more. Ifeel like the character Tyree is especially well-positioned to lead into another paranormal adventure, and I’d be genuinely interested in following that journey if the story continues!

Audio version.
This was wonderful. It starts with a horrible accident. But the next thing you know it goes to something else that has you thinking, what the heck did they mess up the story it's totally different now. It took me a little while to realize that the story was now in the past. It goes back and forth like that several times, so it eventually started to make sense. I hate spoilers so I'll leave it there.
The narration is superb he really brings the story to life.

This was something totally different for me, but I enjoyed it very much.

A young family with a 4 yr old daughter, realize that around their child's birthday every year, it seems there is some type of unusual accident, where quite amazingly the child manages to survive the ordeal, but they are starting to believe that very soon, or the next accident they may not be so lucky, and they could very well lose her. I wouldn't call it paranormal, closer to a somewhat religious experience rather than ghosts and the like.

Whatever, it was very well written, and the story flowed quite smoothly. Characters were very well developed and you become more and more involved in their well being and hoping they can find the answers to their dilemma before it's too late. Quite a good read, thank you.

Wasn't Quite Expecting...

The story. I wasn't quite expecting the story. I rented the book thinking it would be a quick read, something that I could fly through while bored. The summary seemed interesting enough, but it did the plot no justice. The story intertwines with current and past events well, and I found myself engrossed in needing to know what happened next. Although, I did giggle at one point referencing "Catholic chemistry", and had to read the passage out loud to my (raised Catholic) husband who got a kick out of it too. I was definitely pleased with this story, and now I'm on the hunt for another by this author to try.

I knew this was a paranormal story, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I was hooked from the first page and kept turning the pages in anticipation of what was coming next. Mr. Alatorre has the ability to take a simple concept and make it both interesting and terrifying. I love pretty much anything this man writes and I am never disappointed. This story has suspense, fear, terror and heart stopping moments. All my favorites. If you love paranormal stories involving angels and demons, A Place of Shadows is a perfect read. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

I found Alatorre’s earlier book, “Poggibonsi:, funny and entertaining. I expected this new book to be another light-hearted read. Instead, it is, at the core, a story of a man’s love for his family, and the lengths he is willing to go to keep them safe, and ultimately, another version of the battle between good and evil. The characters are well developed and the story moves at a good pace. It is a thought provoking premise set forth in an entertaining story.

This is the first book I read by Alatorre. I enjoyed it a lot, particularly the supernatural element and the main character Doug's grappling with what has happening. However, the reason I can't give it more stars is that I feel like although there was a lot of drama around the main plot, it lacked secondary character drama, i.e. there was no real drama/relationship between Doug and his wife. I felt like this was an area where there was potential that was undeveloped. But still a fun read!

I for one love long stories where you really get down deep into it. This was a great story by Dan Alatorre, narrated by David Bosco.

Loved the story, well written, and loved the narration also. David really did an amazing job telling a great story :)

Was caught in the web of suspense the entire way through, creepy and chilly and intriguing, I loved it!
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

It may take a bit to all come together but it is definitely worth the ride.
Angel or dark angle? Demon or something else? What is after this family in the form of an accident waiting to happen? Are they crazy or is this real? When a reoccurring dream becomes a shared one everyone realizes they aren’t crazy after all.
David Bosco does an excellent job narrating.

I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.
