Set in one 20 Minute period in various locations on the banks of the Thames in London, the fifth book in the 20 Minute Series is as twisting and fast-flowing as the famous river itself.
There is a storm brewing overhead but that doesn't stop several of the capital's inhabitants from heading to the water's edge, filling the bars, restaurants and apartments that overlook the murky river, and putting some on a collision course with their destiny.
Picketers clash with policemen, criminals mingle freely with the innocent and the clock is ticking down on an explosive relationship that is about to be re-ignited.
The river holds many secrets. But the people around it have plenty of their own...

Book #5 of the 20 Minutes series takes us to the central river in London, UK - the river Thames. Like the previous books, we have our regular characters and then of course new ones are chucked into the mix. We have our Jelena and Bodgan who are back in London after their time in Serbia. Jelena knows something is up with Bodgan but isn't sure what it is, but for Bodgan he is nervous about being able to pay for the loan shark that he used the money to track down Laslo whom he killed, Tom and Kelly are headed for Divorce as their holiday in Greece didn't strengthen their relationship, Harry is now going through the stages of puberty and noticing girls are beautiful, Carol and her husband are at the Doctors - this time for her husband's health, Josh has been dating April now for five months and it's April's 30th at the local bar but what will happen when he runs into Louise for the first time since the rape? We finally have a HEA for Chantelle and Will as they finally become boyfriend and girlfriend, but can they handle the fame and fortune that is about to come Will's way? We have a couple of new characters with the woman who is about to jump and Damien - a hero or villain - you decide. I was a little disappointed though that we didn't get Olivia's body rising to the surface being dumped in the Thames as that would have been an intriguing storyline, we did though witness and learn about Valentin's latest murder of the homeless woman. I am now looking forward to Book #6 as we jump to the holiday of Halloween and Harry's birthday.
I had to take a break from this exciting series to read a few tour books but I was thrilled to rejoin them again. Hopefully I can have the rest of the series all done and dusted by the time I have another reading commitment to fulfill.
This fifth installment takes place one month after the previous "20 Minutes on Holiday" in which we met several new faces and reunited with some old favourites. The overall theme of "20 minutes in the day of the life of" several people at once means we meet many new people we may never come across again, which I find kind of sad as they had stories to tell too and I would love to know how some of those turned out. But generally, we have the main few that have pretty much been in every book thus far (if not them, then someone related or attached to them in some way has) and their respective stories are progressing nicely...or not so nicely, as the case may be for some of them.
Jelena returns with Bogdan as the couple take a leisurely evening walk along the Thames, both reflecting respectively on their lives. Jelena is loved up and thankful for the day that Bogdan saved her from a life of torment and abuse while Bogdan is reflecting on a new problem he has in that the money he borrowed a couple of months ago to eek out his revenge didn't come from a reliable source but rather a loan shark. And now he has to find a way of paying it back by the deadline he has been given or risk the gangster's wrath. But little does he know that they are being followed to gain intelligence that will serve as a reminder to Bogdan exactly what is at stake if he doesn't pay up on time.
Tom is on crowd control outside a television studio with his colleagues holding a group of protesters back who are baying for blood from the politician inside its doors. The last thing he feels like doing is standing in the miserable rain. But it's currently more preferable than the alternative: being at home with a wife who wants a divorce and another arguement on his hands.
Kathryn is the mother of Jessica (who we met in the last book) who was arrested in Peru trying to smuggle 10kg of drugs out of the country and into the UK. In the month since she was caught, she has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years and while her husband is in Peru fighting to get his daughter extradited to the UK, Kathryn is amongst the protesters baying for the politician's blood outside the TV studios. She too wants her daughter extradited home to serve her time here and the inhumane conditions to which she's subjected there. But then her anger gets the better of her and she finds herself in handcuffs.
Harry is back, still dreaming of playing for West Ham, but today his school has enjoyed a trip to the London Eye. Meanwhile the 12 year old has discovered strange feelings and goes all gooey every time he sees the beautiful Stephanie, a girl in his class. His aim is to be able to speak to her and invite her to his upcoming birthday party.
Joanne is a wedding planner and is overseeing the nuptials of couple Beth and Andy who we met last book on their respective hens and stag nights. All is going well until something, as it almost always most certainly does, goes wrong leaving the bride screaming in anger.
Australian Hudson is a waiter at the wedding. He had dreams of seeing his fortune in London. But well, things don't exactly go according to plan.
Carol returns but this time it's her husband in the specialist's office and while he doesn't seem overly concerned, he has sent her hubby Steve on for further tests. Only time will tell what they may (or may not) reveal...
Will has returned with his girlfriend Chantelle and they are taking boat on the Thames with his manager to the O2 arena, the venus for his performance tonight. Along the way, he meets someone special who touches his heart.
Valentin is back with a vengeance. A successful market trader, rich and with no clear direction has taken up an obscure interest that sees him multitasking his day job with that of his other life: being a serial killer. With two murders already under his belt, he is on the prowl for more.
April is celebrating her 30th birthday with her friends and boyfriend Joe. After a string of unsuccessful dates, she has finally found the perfect man in Joe. Or has she?
Joe has found redemption in April after a drunken night he would rather forget. But like all secrets, they have a way of bubbling to the surface...he had no idea it would happen on the banks of the Thames just as he had no idea he would see Louise again...or that the truth will come out by the evening's end.
Lindsey is also back...thankfully, Diego is not.
There are several new faces (aside from those already mentioned above) in Simone, a workaholic, is a chef in a michelin star restaurant. But working in such a high pressure environment just may be her undoing; Scott who is recovering from an accident on his bicycle the year before. He was never thought to have walked again but here he is taking his steps to the site of his accident; Abdul, a bus driver; Sue, a Scrabble-playing passenger on his bus; Helen, a troubled soul on Waterloo Bridge; and Damian, a passerby doing his good deed for the day but who has secrets of his own which have him wanting to remain anonymous.
I love how Daniel Hurst brings to life each character but as I said I just wish we would see them more than the fleeting times some of them appear as many have more stories to tell. Some are there for the one book which suffices for that one alone, like the 999 operator in a previous book. But there are others I'm still waiting to see if they return. And then there are our favourites who I love catching up with in each book.
So much is happening in each book and each story is hard to put down. Can't wait to dive into more of them...
I just cannot get enough of this series. The way the chapters flawlessly seam into each other; revisiting old characters and meeting new ones. I read these far too fast and that is my own criticism... having to wait for the next instalment lol.
Love this series. Dip in and out of it. Each book is a quick read. You meet characters from some of the earlier books along with some new ones - each character is linked in some way to the previous one. Very enjoyable.
This is a fantastic series. Each will stand alone as a book but if you read the series you get far more as characters reappear in a different place and time sometimes as well as new characters appear. I dont know how he works out the story lines, planning is amazing! This is a great book, set, as it says, by the Thames in London. We drop into different peoples lives within a 20 minute slot. So much variety. Very gripping. Love all of these. Very different.
When you pick up a Daniel Hurst book you know you're in for a good read. Packed with our favourite characters, and some new ones, it's fab to continue the journey with them. Can't wait to see what they've been doing over Halloween.
I love how the characters stories are interweaving and reading from each perspective. It feels real. I'm loving this series, can't wait to see what happens next!
I am loving this seriously additive secretariat not only do want to read the next chapter but the next book to find out what is going to happen to the characters next
I enjoyed 20 Minutes On The Thames by Daniel Hurst a series of inter-connected short stories.
Jelena and Bogdan are so much in love and take a leisurely walk by the Thames on a beautiful summer evening. She felt safe for the first time in her life now that she had Bogdan, her partner, her protector. Little did they both know that this beautiful bubble would burst anytime soon.
Bogdan had kept a secret from Jelena which made his heart feel like it was about to burst from his chest wall. He just could not relax as he had to put on a front for Jelena as the less she knew the better off the both of them would be. Someone is on his tail and if he doesn't pay up on time something bad will happen.
Tom is a Policeman whose job pounding the beat is getting more dangerous in these current times when crime was on the increase. Protestors were demonstrating about their loved ones who had committed drug crimes abroad and wanted them released back into British prisons. Tom's marriage is on the rocks and divorce is on the cards which is more stress for him to deal with.
Kathryn, is a Mother of a daughter who became a drug mule and is imprisoned in Peru for ten long years in filthy prison conditions and she is one of the angry protestors as she wants justice for her daughter. Sadly her anger gets the better of her and she strikes a politician and she gets to see the inside of a cell too.
Harry is coming of age as he is now twelve years old and his school trip is for his form class to go for a ride on the London Eye which has a good panoramic view of the city. Harry has a crush on Stephanie a girl in his class and only has eyes for her and just needs some dutch courage to ask her to his forthcoming thirteenth birthday on Halloween.
Joanne is a wedding planner and her job is so hectic she does not have time for herself. She is a perfectionist and runs a tight ship but this particular event is not going to go to plan as she is soon going to encounter. The stress is only held back with copious amounts of caffiene.
Hudson is a waiter at an affluent wedding venue and has told a white lie to get a job as a waiter. He was from Adelaide and his dream was to come to London and seek his fortune. Unfortunately, the best-laid plans of mice and men.
Carol has been given a new lease of life since her cancer scare and has even gone on holiday to Portugal with her loving family. The thing is one doesn't know what life has in store for us and Carol is about to find out.
Simone is a chef in her own Michelin star restaurant and lives to work as she is a workaholic but this may not be a good thing as the pressure finally catches up with her.
Scott is recovering from after a cycle accident which had rendered him immobile. He has his own personal trainer and after one year on after the accident he is determined to be mobile again. He also has a good woman, his wife beside him and a positive attitude.
Will is a blind street busker who did good and has a successful music career with the help of Chantelle his best friend and chaperone. He dreams that one day his eyesight will return.
Valentin is a successful businessman who can multi-task both jobs, one being a serial killer and has already a few murders under his belt and is on the prowl once again.
Sue is a homely wife who loves noting better than playing scrabble over her mobile phone with her husband on her way home via bus. They are both very competitive and have a good marriage as they even lunch together.
Abdul is a London bus driver and he really loves his passengers even to the point of entertaining them all with his sense of humour and a career in comedy maybe on the cards.
April is celebrating her thirtieth birthday with Joe her boyfriend and a party of friends in a pub. Everything is running smoothly as they are all having fun but the night is young and truth will out by the end of the evening.
Louise is trying to get her life back after having been raped by an ex-boyfriend. She even took up pickpocketting even though she had a decent job as Receptionist but has finally retired from pickpocketting and has taken up running in order to maintain peace of mind.
Joe has found the girlfriend of his dreams, April and is celebrating her thirtieth birthday at a pub. He is keeping a secret from his past from her but the cat will be well and truly out by the end of the evening.
Lindsey is working in an office tower overlooking the Thames when she happens to see a commotion down below which looked distressing. Lindsey met her boyfriend, Diego on a tube train and he is ten years older than her and works crazy hours.
Helen, housewife and Mother to two teenage sons and also held down a job in Coventry. Helen is a worrier at the best of times and one morning she catches a train to London. Helen is feeling the whole world on her shoulders as her depression takes over.
Damien is a super hero as he rescues a damsel in distress who is attempting to jump off a bridge into the Thames. He phones for an ambulance but does his best to escape from the scene as he has a shady past.
This installment felt like one big setup. A lot of page time went into introducing new characters, which made the whole book feel more like groundwork for future drama than actual story progression with the people we already know and care about.
Jelena and Bogdan’s chapters remain the standout. They are the only ones that have been moving at a solid pace and feel fully developed this far into the series. I loved that we got a Will chapter, but even Valentin, one of the main baddies, had a POV that came off like a throwaway.
Still, I enjoyed it overall. The series has me in a chokehold, and I am locked in for the ride no matter how much setup I have to wade through.
This is a great series. So different from anything else I've read. The way Hurst segues from story to story is amazing. I'm glad the books are short, because they are so hard to put down! But if you want to read this series, be sure to start with book one, as many of the characters continue forward. On to Halloween!
Some of the characters are familiar, and I assume any new ones will show up in future stories. I do enjoy the shorter length. One turn-off for me in this book was that it seemed that all of the characters were either over imbibing or sleeping around (or both). I guess that's life but not for any of my friends or family, so it's always disturbing to me.
5th book in this 20 Minute series by Hurst continued the stories of 20 people - some returning characters and some new - in a 20 minute timespan along the Thames River in London. Love, hate, and revenge all play a part in this continuing saga! Onto #6!
The Thames was the link for stories in this latest 20 minute book. Cleverly linking stories of all the established characters that are developing in each book.
𝕋𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤... Book 5 in the series and I love how old characters are intertwined with new characters. I find some of the characters more likeable than others and it’s such an easy book to read. Looking forward to reading the next book on the most scariest day of the year. ℍ𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕠𝕨𝕖𝕖𝕟 🎃 🌟🌟🌟🌟
A bitch is gonna need a glass of wine and a half hour of total quiet to decompress from the events of this one.
Book 5 of 20 has a lot going on.
Valentin's chapter had me on edge. I've realized that as a reader his decision to be serial killer isn't what makes me dislike him. I love Dexter Morgan and while Joe Goldberg isn't horrible. Glob knows Beck was trashy and light weigh deserved to be unalive. Valentin is so unlikable due to his judgmental, better than though attitude. I have soo many theories about how this is going to play out for him. If I were reading this with a book club, I imagine there would be lots of theories and a betting pool on his inevitable demise or sucess.
I'm still not sure why April is an OG and why she has her own chapter. She's basic af and I just don't care about her at all. I forgot to mention that for a brief moment in book 3 (At the park) she was almost interesting but that was very short lived.
Louise.... YESSSS girl. Let it all out so you can heal. Joe's selfishness and denial in regard to what he did to her and how badly it affected her fills me with rage. I wonder with the author being a male if he is drawing inspiration from possible known acquaintances who tried to justify their own horrible actions. Locker room talk and all that. I mean Joe, WTF is wrong with you??
Bogden and Jelena still my most favorite people. I want all of the good for them and the idea of anymore harm coming to either of them literally makes me tear up.
Newbie Kathryn- I feel you mama bear
Harry- Finally a nice lighthearted chapter. I mean as lighthearted as you can get with this series and this poor sheltered boy he keeps witnessing serious shit.
Lindsay - I appreciated her actions tonight and that entire storyline and the people involved and am looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.
Will, Chantelle, Andrew, Ruth, - This entire crew makes me smile. I hope that secrets don't damage the positive vibes they have going.
This was definitely a better book than the last can't wait for the next. This series has dominated all my free time these past few days and will continue to do so until it's completed. #noregrets
I don't know how Daniel Hurst has got us to care for some of these characters when we are only reading what happens to them in twenty minutes, but he has. We still have some original characters, but as the series progresses, more new characters are introduced to us. The stories are completely different to any other short story series I've read. The Thames plays centre stage as all the events are taking place somewhere along the Thames.
