About the author

Edna O’Brien was an award-winning Irish author of novels, plays, and short stories. She has been hailed as one of the greatest chroniclers of the female experience in the twentieth century. She was the 2011 recipient of the Frank O’Connor Prize, awarded for her short story collection Saints and Sinners. She also received, among other honors, the Irish PEN Award for Literature, the Ulysses Medal from University College Dublin, and a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Literary Academy. Her 1960 debut novel, The Country Girls, was banned in her native Ireland for its groundbreaking depictions of female sexuality. Notable works also include August Is a Wicked Month (1965), A Pagan Place (1970), Lantern Slides (1990), and The Light of Evening (2006). O’Brien lived in London until her death.

I due giganti: racconto delizioso, pieno di ironia. La sagacia della moglie del gigante Finn risolve la contesa col gigante McConigle in modo elegante e imprevedibile. 5*

L'elfo ciabattino e Il ragazzo vestito di pelle di capra: entrambi molti carini. Hanno l'impianto delle fiabe tradizionali, soprattutto il secondo con le tre prove da superare per poter sposare la principessa. 4*

La bottiglia blu: racconto morale, decisamente più amaro rispetto ai precedenti, del resto l'imprudenza e la disonestà devono trovare una punizione. 3*

Gobbin Gobbetto: fiaba dall' impianto classico con tranelli, mascheramento, disubbidienza e riconciliazione. 4*

Lord Cavalcadrago: un eroe picaresco alla don Chisciotte, ma in salsa irlandese con un'armatura fatta di pentole e coperchi e un pizzico di fortuna in tasca. 4*

Giò Piedenero: delizioso, una storia d'amore, di magia e di "rivincita" sociale carinissima. 4*

Paddy Cornamusa: raccontato in prima persona, bella la scelta stilistica dell'uso del linguaggio parlato con tutti i suoi vezzi e carina la storia della mucca cannibale. 3*

Големият британски илюстратор Майкъл Форман попадна в полезрението на българските читатели заедно с романите на Майкъл Морпурго, но трябваше да дочакаме появата на „Робин Худ” от изд. „Лабиринт”, за да можем най-накрая да се насладим на някои от цветните творби на художника. Ето, че сега, няколко месеца по-късно, пак от изд. „Лабиринт” идва и едно своеобразно „духовно продължение” на гореспоменатата книга. Новото издание е в сходен формат и художествено оформление, отново посветена на фолклора на Британските острови и отново с майсторските илюстрации на Майкъл Форман, но този път е под авторството на сладкодумната Една О’Брайън. „Ирландски приказки” е прекрасен сборник, съдържащ дузина колоритни и невероятни истории, в изпипан превод на български от Владимир Молев. I read this on and off over some many months, but really enjoyed this collection of stories 😃

I liked the language, in the opening prologue and throughout 🙂

and all the stories are told with a humorous turn of both phrase and events 😃

another giant, and a captive princess. the white cat comes in thru the window, with a way to help her. but the prince is distractable and nearly fails several times 😉

🧚🏽‍♂ Gilly.
the fairies enlist Gilly to rescue a princess. he does, but inadvertently frees her from the fairies, who in their anger make her mute. Gilly tries to figure out what to do...

🐄 Paddy the Piper.
a knock at the door after curfew, and some brilliant banter 😁 Paddy is housed in the shed overnight, the cow is accused of eating him! and alot more besides 😉
this tale ends the collection really well 😃😁

I have a hardbound copy of this which was given to me by one of my mom's friends when I was 10. My love for books was quite apparent at that age! This was beautifully written and the folklore in here are quite original and fascinating. I especially love the tale with the Blue Bottle, the Crow something (ahhahaha I forgot the title) but it was basically about a prince's adventures. This was fun and easy to read!

Io amo le fiabe però queste, come in generale quelle nordiche, non sono esattamente del genere che amo.
Qui le mie preferite sono state: La bottiglia blu, anche se un po’ amara come morale, perché basata sull’avidità e l’incontentabilità umana, e Gobbin Gobbetto, che è quella un po’ più strutturata, che contiene diversi bei messaggi, basati sul fatto che al cuore non si comanda e che l’abito non fa il monaco e anche sulla capacità di guardare all’essenziale e non all’esteriorità.
In questa seconda però mi sono chiesta il senso del desiderio del gigante di non andare nella stalla e sulla stoltezza del comportamento di Jack in quei casi, domanda che mi sono posta in diversi altri casi nelle fiabe di questa raccolta.
Non male anche la storia di Gió Piedenero e della sua principessa francese, anche se non vedo proprio gli elfi come personaggi descritti, e in effetti credo che in originale si trattasse di folletti, dato che sono descritti come piccoli e dispettosi, pur non vedendo come così cattivi nemmeno i folletti in realtà.

Само ако знаете от какъв вълшебен свят се завърнах току-що.
Вероятно вече доста хора тук знаят за моята страст към Ирландия и всичко ирландско - музика, танци /но само като зрител/, език /знам цели пет думи и две изречения/, литература, митология. Така че като разбрах за излизането на български на тази книга, просто нямаше начин да я пропусна. Особено когато дванайсетте /твърде малко!/ приказки в нея са пресъздадени от Една О'Брайън. И очаквах върховна наслада.
И получих именно това. Жив, цветен език, типичното пиперливо ирландско чувство за хумор, вълшебни създания, прелестни описания на суровата, но и красива ирландска природа - какво повече му трябва на човек? И всичко това - описано с толкова любов към всичко живо. Малко ще се отклоня, но знаете ли - когато говорят за страната си, ирландците не използват безличното местоимение it. Казват she - тя, сякаш страната има живо олицетворение, сякаш е отделно живо същество.
Но - за приказките. На тези страници ще срещнете какви ли не създания - великани, леприкони /естествено, че къде без тях, и у дома има един/, дракони, джуджета, принцеси-вълшебници. Ще се заливате от смях, ще се стряскате, ще изпитвате ужас. И през цялото време ще ви се иска да сте там, където се случва всичко това.
Някои от приказките /"Вълшебните ябълки" и "Двамата великани" ми бяха познати, но това по никакъв начин не намали удоволствието от тях. Хубавото на такива истории е, че могат да се разказват в много варианти и все да са вълшебни, увлекателни, омайващи.
В други приказки, като например "Синята бутилка", се среща мотивът за вълшебни предмети, които носят храна и благоденствие. Трети, като "Лорд Яхнидракон" може много да ви напомнят една друга история /няма да кажа коя, като я прочетете, сами ще се сетите/, но тази е разказана много по-живо и пъстро, и лично аз я предпочитам. А защо толкова си прилича с онази другата? Защото цялото разделяне на свеета е условно - всички сме едно. И затова си приличат историите.
Мога да продължа да изброявам кои приказки ми харесаха. Едва ли обаче има смисъл, защото се влюбих във всичките. "Ирландски приказки" е книга, която трудно можеш да оставиш. Четеш и се опиваш, защото каквото и да разказват ирландците, те го правят така, че историята те поглъща и не искаш да свършва.
Има обаче една история, което се отличава от останалите. И в нея приказното някак се смесва с реалното и отстъпва на едно по-тъжно чувство. Защото когато започнах да я чета, спрях на средата на изречението. Казах си, че това не е истинско начало на истинска приказка. В приказките има магия, има безвремие. Тук можех да кажа за кое време става въпрос, а някои от участниците в историята са всичко друго, но не и приказни същества. Напротив, плашещо истински са. Но дори и тук има нотка на хумор, има я онази частица, която ти дава повод да се засмееш. Защото ирландците са такива - умеят да осмиват дори ужасното. И добре че е така.
Книгата много ми хареса, а чудесните илюстрации на Майкъл Форман само допълват вълшебството. А преводът на Владимир Молев е истинска прелест.Донякъде ме смути само ситният шрифт, но въпреки това прочетох книгата с огромно удоволствие.
Препоръчвам я горещо. Едва ли ще има човек, който да не се влюби в тези приказки. Подарете си това вълшебство!

Una lettura da adulti che permette di staccare e volare con la fantasia proprio come quei libri che leggevo da piccola. Davvero piacevole anche per chi, come me, non ama le leggende nordiche.

Lovely Irish folk stories re-told by Edna O'Brien (not Michael Foreman as Goodreads suggests). They're funny, witty and sharp and beautifully illustrated - one of the nicest second hand books I ever purchased.

This was an entertaining book of Irish Folk and Fairy Stories. Towards the end of the book, the author told the stories using Irish terms and language, which made it a bit of a struggle to decipher them.

Summarize the book
And it's another culturally based collection of folk and fairy stories!! This one we actually bought in Ireland. Does that mean it is officially endorsed by the Irish people? I. don't. know. :-)

This book contains 12 stories from traditional Irish folklore and includes traditional characters such as the giant, Finn McCool (my son's namesake), Giantess Oonagh, leprechauns and also various dragons and princesses. Interestingly, in the first tale, "Two Giants," there is a part where the baby Finn tricks another giant into thinking he has incredible strength. He uses tricks like pretending to squeeze water from a stone when really it is a cheese curd and pretending to eat bread that is hard as iron when really Finn ate a normal loaf and the other giant's loaf had an iron skillet baked into it. What I find interesting about this is that there is a very similar story in another book I reviewed, The Troll with no Heart in its Body, which features stories from Norway. I love that we can see the ebb and flow of cultures and their folklore in stories with similar elements such as this.

Identify the characteristics from the text that support the specific genre

These are fairy and folk tales. They include largely over simplified tales of the triumph of good over evil, they include magical creatures like giants, they give reasons for natural phenomena (such as how "The Giants' Causeway, a large string of boulders through the sea, came to be).

Identify specific concepts that could be integrated into the classroom.
How stories / mythology can be similar across cultures and why that might be (for older students). The culture of storytelling and literature that is still vibrant in Ireland today.

Offer any other suggestions that would be useful regarding literary content, reading level, and other ways in which the book might be integrated.
Depictions of Irish folklore are often quite diluted by typical (and secular) St. Patrick's day celebrations in the U.S. It would be lovely to dig a little deeper and help children explore how rich Irish mythology (and music and dance and also contemporary culture) really is.

Mostly unrelated and not that I watch movies with students BUT two BEAUTIFUL movies building on the rich story telling culture of Ireland are Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. LOVE those.

Um...I actively hate the illustrations in this book. Just assume that I gave the creepy pictures -500 stars, and we'll only be judging the actual stories. For real though, these pictures are the worst, and I really don't know why anyone would have been paid to do them.

OK, the stories! So it turns out I don't really like Irish fairy tales that much? I mean, I know that fairy tales are kind of sexist and gross, but these seemed way more sexist and gross than others I've read. Plus, they were all kind of needlessly complicated and didn't have any sort of logic to them at all. Maybe there are great Irish Fairy tales out there, but overall, they're not in this book. But hey, unlikable stories are still a part of our cultural heritage, so there you go. Also, I was completely baffled by the author's use of footnotes. Every once in a while, she would define something, which was helpful, but that word was always surrounded by a least 5 other words that I didn't recognize. How did she choose what to define???

Anywho, my favorite of the stories were The White Cat and Paddy the Piper. But I can't really imagine myself learning or telling either of them.

I started reading this book just after purchasing it in sixth grade. Then I gave it up for a few years and I decided to finish it, as it should be done. The Irish tales contained herein are vaguely cute, but I must say that I not found so fascinating them and I was disappointed about the last one in particular because it did not quote the logical consequences of an event.
