What a doozy this story was!!!! 🥴😩 If there’s one thing you can count on from Mel Dau is an original story that also educates you. Sis had me emotionally charged with this one!
This story centers around two couples. Cousins Ava and Myah are practically sisters and best friends. They’ve been attached at the hip since birth and have done everything together from going to the same college to working at the same firm. They are the only two African American women VPs at their company and are shaking shît up in a major way.
Myah is married to Anthony and to say that their marriage has been tested is an understatement. After experiencing the loss of their son at week 32 of Myah’s pregnancy, the faith and strength of their marriage faltered. They have finally regained momentum and now must face some tough decisions after realizing they aren’t on the same page when it comes to the future of their family.
Ava is dealing with a loss herself. After falling in love during her freshman year of college and marrying who she thought would be her forever love she is now faced with living life as a widow and wondering if she’ll ever find love again. She’s always been around Isaac because he’s the bff of Anthony however she refuses to allow herself to get close to another man for more reasons than one. Isaac has his eyes set on Ava and her apprehension is viewed as a challenge by him. Once she exposes her MAIN reason for not giving him a shot ish gets real af!!! 😵💫😳🤯
Initially Isaac’s reaction was to be expected because I can’t even say I wouldn’t have been shocked too but afterwards both him and and Anthony were asśholes and super insensitive. I appreciate the informative aspect of the story because I definitely learned a few things on navigating through life dealing with what Ava had to endure. I’m glad these two couples were able to get it together and I look forward to reading more about them in book 2.
That letter at the end really took me over…such a beautiful expression of gratitude. This is such a warm and loving story about 2 couples….with one of the couples she’s infected with HIV…so that’s their dilemma…the second couple are married and previously lost a baby and are struggling with the possibility to try again.
The love was truly untainted and unconditional. This was sad, informative and beautiful at the same with many beautiful moments of love and compassion. It wasn’t an easy journey but Ava and Isaac came together under a beautiful rainbow
This was a beautifully written story and one that can be super intimidating for someone to tackle. The author did such a great job raising awareness on the topic of HIV and provided a ton of education throughout the book. I think whenever someone hears about this particular diagnosis there is always a negative stigma attached. I appreciated that the main character was a successful woman that was not dependent on anyone else and she wasn’t bitter or conniving. I found the supporting characters to be be relatable and their different responses were realistic. I did like Ava’s character but I didn’t like that she kept trying to run when things got tough. She was worthy of being loved and she found what she needed in Isaac. The back and forth was a lot at times but they got it together in the end. There was a good flow and I like that the main topic or climax to the book happened a little further into the story. I was able to get a good feel for all of the characters and then the plot twist happened. Good read for me.
The story was very deep and a lot to take in. I'm happy Ava was able to have a happier life. Isaac was uninformed at first, but he came around, and I forgave him for his initial reaction to Ava's news. Education was the key for them, and a strong desire for something more than JF.
I was hesitant to read this, yet I'm so glad I did. Mel Dau truly has a gift when it comes to writing about health, mainly mental health, so when I saw this book was about HIV, I was put off. I can't give a concrete reason why, yet I'm sure it's because of the stigma that surrounds HIV and AIDS, yet Mel Dau did a magnificent job giving factual info and taking from actual experiences that someone who is living with this disease has gone through. It was such a sweet story and I honestly didn't want to be sad when I read this and given the humor and overall Love, sadness was truly the furthest from my mind.
I liked how strong Ava was. She was hit with a horrible blow, learning that she contracted HIV from her husband, Andre, as he himself was dying from Pneumonia while also finding out he had full blown AIDS! They were each other's first, yet his friends convinced him to run a train on a girl to "prepare" him for marriage. He wasn't aware he even had the disease until he got a cold that landed him in the hospital and quickly after, he died. Ava took this so hard bc she was left with a diagnosis that she essentially felt would make her unlovable. Who would want her with this? Yet, she was in for a huge treat when she let Isaac into her life. Although they'd know each other, due to his friendship with her cousin Myahs' husband Anthony, they didn't really speak to each other. I love how Isaac spoke how she would be his, even tho it was before he knew about her diagnosis. I understood the struggle Isaac and Anthony had once they learned about Ava; many people see that as an automatic death sentence and assume the person got it from being "nasty" or being a wildly promiscuous person. This isn't always true and I'm glad Mel Dau took the route she did with this story. As much as I wanted to be mad at Isaac and Anthony for their reactions, I had to charge it to their ignorance rather than their heart.
Isaac was a piece of work. I was so wrapped up in how lovingly he persued Ava, that it was hard to stay mad at him when he messed up. Although I was upset with how he initially treated Ava after she told him she had HIV, I'm glad he decided to talk with his parents, who told him his favorite Aunt was HIV positive. She lived a vibrant life, was married to his Uncle and they had 4 healthy, HIV free kids. I hate how she got it, yet loved that she didn't let that situation define her. She was not only a guide for Isaac, yet one for Ava as well. The family unit was endearing.
I don't even want to know what it's like to live with HIV, let alone willing be in a relationship with someone who is. Isaac won me over because he loved Ava just because, not in spite of. I hope that as their story continues, he'll pour more greatness into their relationship and that flows over onto their children.
Mel Dau can write her behind off and this book, even with it's heavy topic, was splendid.
Can I have some tissues PUHLEASE? This story was tender in a way that sneaks up on you. The kind of love that doesn’t shout but sits with you, studies you and asks to be trusted. What stood out most was how purposeful everything felt every hesitation, every pause, every moment of restraint. This wasn’t a rush to love story; it was a learning how to love story.
Ava’s uncertainty felt honest. Loving deeply once and losing it changes you and her fear wasn’t only about Isaac it was about surviving another hurt due to rejection. Wanting to be loved properly while being terrified of what that love might cost is such a real place to sit. Her strength didn’t cancel out her vulnerability and that balance made her beautiful to read.
Isaac his love was patient, grounded and self aware. He didn’t just want Ava he wanted to understand her. His hesitation didn’t come from judgment (well ummm maybe a tad bit when he first found out) but from needing knowledge, context and truth. That willingness to learn is what made his love feel so pure. When he said, you’re everything I’m not and for that I respect you, I felt that in my chest. Ava's strength is astronomical even when she has her moments. She adjusts her crown and remembers she's that bihhhhhh!!!!!
Ava's father gives her a scripture reference and it was spot on. This love embodied patience, kindness and endurance. It wasn’t perfect but it was honest. Sometimes the most untainted love isn’t the one without flaws it’s the one willing to face them without turning away.
This book wasn’t just romance. It was healing on the page. The kind that leaves your heart tender, your eyes wet and your spirit full.

When I say that I have never , never , NEVER read a storyline like this one, I am telling the truth, the whole truth, and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH okay!!! This read was emotional. I was on the brink of tears so many times. This read was educational, I learned so much about HIV that I didn’t even know and honestly felt a little ignorant and guilty, and shameful about inner assumptions. This read was about love, true and real love especially since (the way this storyline was written) this could happen to any of us. But it also taught me not to take nothing for granted. Myah and Ava are now 2 of my favorite book queens. I love them and I’m glad I decided to read this author’s entire catalog. This was the best decision I’ve made. Each storyline and although we’ve had some repeat characters each book has been different and unique. If you’re wondering whether or not you should read… THE ANSWER IS HELL YEAH ‼️‼️‼️ You won’t regret it.
I absolutely loved Love Untainted, Mel Dau did an outstanding job giving this story the attention it deserved. Everyone needs to be represented in love stories and I’m glad Mel Dau decided to tell this one.
Ava and Issac’s love story was complicated but he knew she was the one for him the first time her saw her but she was married but then life happened and she was single again and he did in his power to show her he wanted to get to know her. Of course there is drama, insecurity and secrets that they have to work through and reading how they handled it was eye opening.
Plus you get to see their best friends Myah and Anthony, who happens to be married to each other, go through life as a married couple and watch how the love and support each other, while supporting Ava and Issac.
This book definitely should be on your TBR and I smile when one of my favorite families business was mentioned in this book.
This book was definitely different, not just an enjoyable read but one filled with insight and awareness about HIV and AIDS. Times have truly changed from when the world first new about HIV/AIDS, from how it's contracted to the treatments available to individuals living with the disease. And this story shows that one can still thrive and live a happy life when following the proper medical regimen. Ava may have been hard on herself at times but I loved that she had Myah in her corner. And Myah giving that lesson to Anthony and Isaac was the icing on the cake. Isaac really stepped up when he did his research about HIV/AIDS since he knew Ava was going to be his. I loved their journey and commitment to each other. Their blessing in the end was definitely a tear jerker. The author did an amazing job with this bookand I highly recommend reading.
Mel did it again. This book can be described as so many things: creative, educational, emotional, captivating. I love how the author takes what many view as a disability and turns it into a beacon of light and love. I’ve learned so much reading her books. It really shows how ignorant society is when it comes to accepting that those with mental and/or physical health issues are stereotyped; never accepting that they desire love too.
This particular book focuses on a beautiful young lady living with HIV. The reader goes on a emotional journey with her as she comes to grips with what she deserves, how she loves and how the consequences of another can almost destroy the lives of the people around them.
This story was beautifully written! It was not only educational BUT it showed that someone like Ava loving with HIV could find love again. My favorite part of the book was when Myah had to school her husband Anthony and Issac (Ava’s then potential bae) on Ava’s condition. Google really is free and I believe even in real life we as humans hear something like HIV and judge the person instead of educating ourselves along with being there for them. Once again this was such a well written book! OH and I’m using Google right now to see if there’s an apple orchard in York, SC to send my Uncle since he lives in the area...LOL!
Can I get a wow😳. This book🔥🔥. Like the way Mel Dau told this story...🔥. I have no words. I shed a lot of tears😢😢😢, I laughed a whole lot🤣🤣🤣👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽, I only wanted to throat punch Ava about 2 times but it’s understandable her fears and hurt. I’m glad that Isaac gave in and got himself together. It was a big decision but I’m glad he decided to follow love💃🏽💃🏽❤️❤️😜. So happy that Anthony and his wife finally got their little one👏🏽👏🏽🥳🥳. The relationship between these four was awesome. I’m glad I read this book. It was enjoyable and food for thought. Read it😉. Thank you Mel Dau for another epic journey. Be blessed🙏🏽❤️
Let me start by saying I am an advid reader of urban romance. While there have been many books that have touched me and stayed with me through the years. This is the first book that has captured every emotion and touched me in not only an emotional and educational way but spiritual as well.
Jesus this book is a direct reflection of what love is. Displaying an unselfish love through pages can be a bit hard, I would imagine. Mel did a phenomenal job doing so. To see that there is a part 2 is mind blowing because she does so a great job in book one without a cliffhanger.
I encourage you to read this book as it was truly a great read.
This is one of the best books I have read this year. I learned a lot about Hiv. What a shame how Ava contracted this disease. I liked Isaac at first when he was pursuing Ava. She She told him about having Hiv the way he reacted and treated her made me mad. As I kept reading I came to understand the reason why. Once he learned everything their is to know and really wanted to her with her I started liking him again. This book had me crying. Thank you for giving us readers detailed information about a person living with Hiv.
Omg was i impressed to say the least everything i mean everything about the book was tremendous and wonderful when she told issac the part of her life i knew im my heart he was goimg to still be there i know it was just shock and scared that had him at odd but felt like he should have said something to her sooner and got educated sooner also but loved the way he loved her even with the doubt her story was a eye opener to everyone and im glad I got to read it thank u for the life eye opener.
Let me just say that even after Anthony apologized, I still hated him. He was such a jerk! I know that there’s this big stigma around being HIV positive, but the people who have it are still human beings who still deserve to be loved and treated with respect. I’m glad Isaac took the time to really get educated and understand the importance of being with someone who has that type of condition. I loved the person Myah was for Ava, but even more glad that Isaac’s aunt was a person who Ava could relate to.
Such a rare topic that’s written, but this was written so well that the ignorance pissed me off to the point I was ready to DNF. The sense of anger and disgust shows that Mel Dau’s writing is enticing and conflicting while comforting as well. Thank you for showing that life still goes on after a diagnosis. From a child of a positive mother, this hit home. Stories like this matter, especially in the Black Community. S/O to BRAE for another introduction of Mel Dau’s pen.
I love the characters an d their relationships. I found Anthony to be comical.
This story brought back a lot of memories for me. I worked in the first clinic, in my city, for HIV/AIDS patients. They were some of the kindest people I've every met. The one thing that still bothers me is that people still don't learn and or research the facts of these serious ailments/diseases before their ignorance and stupidity roll off of their tongues.
Thank you for this book, Mel Dau. I sure wish the second part was on the Kindle. 😊
Words escape me after reading this book. Mel Dau you are brilliant writer. I love your characters in this book supporting and main characters. Isaac and Ava it was a joy to read about this couple. I believe it's a true depiction of a relationship for those who live with and love with this disease. For these loving couples and the advances that have been made it is truly a blessing.
Mel Dau. When I say you will touch on taboo topics. What I love is you do it with grace, understanding, and love. Showing us something traumatic and a real situation for someone doesn't mean their life has to end. You showed someone it's OK to have feelings, it's not ok to wallow in them. I am so glad I stumbled upon you last year. Keep on giving us great work. 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Even after all this time rereading this book still touched me I have lost many family members to the virus and it is sad that people still treat them like there has not been so much progress made to insure a long full life I loved it touched my heart and gave me hope that people can still have love ❤️ God bless you
This Author hits me in my heart every time! This book was a wonderful, thoughtful look into the lives of those who deal with this situation on the daily. The response from a reader at the end was heartfelt.. Whoever she may be she is in my prayers and I pray she finds the love we all need and search for... Kudos to Mel Day!!!
This is one of the best books I've read so far this year. If this book is not a true testament of love being powerful, I don't know what is. I can truly say, I can count on 1 hand how many times a book made me cry, but baby, this story had the waterworks on full blast. I really loved this storyline.
Mel Dau, I was cautious to read this but the topic had me emotional, literally in tears because the situation is basically every day life and ignorance of the subject matter doesn’t equate to bliss! It is an informative and incredibly interesting read… I highly recommend this
Issac and Anthony gave these women so much life. Even though Issac couldn’t get it together at first and Anthony was a big butthole. The love they poured into these women at their time of need. Myah and Ava were the epitome of strong black female characters. They were not for the games. Thank you for this informative read. The way you pin difficult topics is priceless.
Thugs aren’t supposed be crying the club but this book had me sobbing. If it’s one thing Mel is gonna do, she’s gonna take you on a roller coaster. Ava went through it honey, she’s stronger than me. Issac better be happy that she was forgiving. Anthony can sit down somewhere and not speak again.
Had me locked in from start to finish. Kept me on my toes but also had to keep my open my heart and mind fully to this one. Beautifully done Mel. Educating and entertaining your readers in such a special way. Now where is the second book!? Can we get Aunt&Unc’s story too??
Man this book high point was definitely not what I was expecting. But I tell you one thing this book has been so interesting and informative. I have learned so much and I think I have went through so many emotions just reading. What strength it takes to love when you are afraid and unsure.
