From her chance meeting with a sexy Irishman, who keeps mysteriously vanishing --to stupidly getting suckered into a trip to the Hell Plane --the Valkyrie just can't seem to catch a break
When a simple scouting mission goes off the rails, Raywen finds herself in a violent and bloody race against time to protect everyone she loves. As questions multiply even faster than the body count, she begins to doubt everything she thought she knew.
The Fates may have a sense of humor, but Raywen isn't laughing.
Hellish Debts is the first book in Brook Rogers' new Broken Gods series.
Are you ready for a fast-paced, kick-ass romp through Hell?
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
3.5*
Accidentally deleted from 'all' shelves when I meant to remove from just one! -- Thankfully I had the original shelf open in another window, and it was just one page that I was able to grab a screenshot of, so I can re-add all 17 books. I don't store reviews, so I have clue what else I added beyond the star rating, sorry! :(
I'll try to recall to add my thoughts, again, when I do a re-read.
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
🛡️🛡️ONE FAST & FURIOUS RIDE🛡️🛡️ Holy hell robin! Brook hit the ground running with this action packed, hard hitting, heart pounding, pulse racing, block buster, keeping you riveted on a razors edge and frozen to your seat, thrusting this hot little number to life spectacularly. Chicanery runs rampant and havoc is rife, rousting all the drama, intrigue, turmoil, underhanded threats, escalating danger spiraling suspense and intense situations along with a boatload of revelations, you have one high octane experience. Boundaries are amplified and exploited, drawing deep for every ounce of moxie in a fierce surge of determination, kicking ass with a vengeance, blasting onward with such intensity and vigor, wrapping this baby up sleek, shiny and tight. The characters, banter, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits, blend and flow, transforming into genuine charismatic personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and graphic descriptions creating an elaborate backdrop that feels as though you were transported to ground zero with them. Fantastic job Brook, thanks for sharing this amazing trilogy with us.
Raywen life was easier in the good old Norse times….. … as Valkyries roamed the earth as revered “chooser of the slain” and didn’t have to make ends meet as employee of the Wichita Supernatural Enforcement Office, it maybe not be such as glamourous job, but someone have to do it, and Raywen is best at it… but as “a simple job” turns into a trip to Hell, even the best has trouble keeping order.
“Hellish Debts” the first installment in the new UF Series “Broken Gods” by Brook Rogers checks all the right boxes: witty entertaining strong FMC, action galore, good crafted storyline, well-developed secondary characters (including all pertinent supernaturals), carefully constructed world and fairly use of mainly but not exclusively Norse lore. Very interesting start in a whole new series/verse.
The only negative of this book is that it ended, I absolutely loved it. It starts with the female character who is a fierce enforcer, a Valkerie without wings or is she? The story goes into the missions she takes on and all the many different super natural"s along the way, there are a lot , the mishaps that lead into other journeys. A definite grab your copy if your into paranormal/fiction. Written with a great story line, brilliant characters and wit and humour as well as kick butt fights. Cannot wait for the next book.

Raywen is a wingless valkyrie working for some sort of supernatural police force. One night she finds herself mated to a berserker, however the reveal of the mate bond was very anticlimactic. While trying to settle a debt with a witch she gets caught up in a fae queen's plot to open a portal to the underworld.
This story definitely had a ton of potential but there wasn't enough world building for me to really get into it. Also, Raywen was all "blah blah blah I'm an independent woman and totally badass" and almost in the same breath is like "how dare this man make me go first?!?" I just didn't get her a lot of the time, I think this series is not for me.
DNF - quit @ 18% This was really weird. There’s really no defining the back story, to give a reader direction of where this is possibly going to go. The FMC is just a little off her rocker I think. Some of the descriptions of the FMC used were just as confusing as the FMC character herself. I lost interest really fast on this one, surprised myself by keeping going to the 18% point. I’m deleting this from my Kindle.
At my age (61), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
I loved this book. It was an amazing read that started with a bang and just got better and better. It was a story full of action, funny scenes and inner monologues and a mystery or two. I loved the characters, especially Raywen. The ending left so many questions to be answered and setup the series beautifully. I cannot wait to see what happens next. And the story was pretty clean except for the messy battle scenes. Cannot wait to solve the mystery that Raywen is shaping up to be.
If I’d realized that this series isn’t finished, that there’s no sign of the next book or any recent activity at all from the author (last book published March 2022), and that each of the published books ends in a stupid cliffhanger I never would have even glanced at the first book. Authors, knock it off. If you don’t think your book can stand on its own without resorting to cheap tricks like cliffhangers then maybe you need to spend more time drafting/editing before publishing.
Not sure what the prequel not novels or cities bar but this was very fun – the heroine is very intense and charming and despite a reasonable amount of self doubt she is able to kick ass and a very fun way – and the other people around” and the evil fairy queen is just a lot of fun-but need could’ve done with a lot more character development
Oh what a world we have been gifted with…what supernatural creatures we have the pleasure of meeting, going along with them on their journey to save their realms. So what happens when a Berserker and a we don’t know for sure what Raye is Valkyrie find themselves soul bonded? We will find out!
A world full of supernatural creatures, an enforcement agency, a funny dynamic heroine who is not what she thinks and may have great undiscovered powers, a sudden mate bond with a 500 year-old gorgeous Irishman and their... adventures. In hell. And Earth. A good start to a series I would continue. (stars rounded up)
An entertaining start to a series which kept me hooked with the story line and engaging characters. The author has done a great job with this book and I look forward to reading more.

What a ride. To have magical powers thrown on you and then you learn that you are bonded, to be someone's wife may be berserk but also hot. This is just the tip of what Ray has to deal with. A definite must read!!!
Couldn't finish it. The whole thing felt clunky and forced. Basically it's a handful of PNR tropes stuffed into 166 pages; little in the way of plot, some action, instant lust and bonding. Nothing meaningful or complex.
With it's many twists and turns the far world collides with the gateway portals of Star gate. It made for an interesting story one making me reach out for the next book right away.
Holy shiznet!!! What a gr8 story. Two types of magical enforcers, mating bonds, Berserkers, valkyrie, demons, and fey. I enjoyed this story very much and am looking forward to reading the next book. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
This is has three books in this series of books by the author. I don't know if you're interested in reading this series or not but I'm sure going to be reading more in this series.
The story flows well and is hard to put down. The humor scattered throughout is also great. Read it in a Day and starting the 2nd one now! Thank you for a great escape from everyday life!
The storyline plot is a whirlwind of action, drama, suspense and more. I was hooked by the first paragraph. I can't wait to read more from this author.
I'm a sucker for a Valkyrie story. The sexy sexy time has a purpose and doesn't take away from the story. The only note I'd give is the chase was overly long. And the absence while it was probably a good choice for the series it wasn't for this book. Heart to heart backstory confessions bring the mcs together and gives the reader info. Getting it from a secondary source feels flat and her reaction to it shows what a mistake it was.
This is a first book for me by Brook and it sure won't be the last I really enjoyed getting to know her writting style and the characters are amazing!!
Not a lot of smolder, but great world building, dialogue, and characters. I am looking forward to seeing where this story goes, and I always love a strong heroine. 😎
Round this up to a 3.5. This was a fun, decent story. It needed some more oomph though. Also, how many books am I going to have to read beforensomething spicy happens?
