I took out many books from the library about using a compass and was recommended to buy this book by a friend. It was much more helpful than all those books. He takes the reader step by step to reading maps, using a compass, and planning routes. He also gives out exercises to try out your skills. Also enjoyed his personal stories of adventure racing and the many times he got lost.

Excellent book. Mark’s writing is clear and engaging, and he makes his points well. I found the pictures and exercises to be extremely useful and well-thought out, and I enjoyed reading about some of his experiences with adventure races and the decision-making process with route-planning.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering taking up orienteering, adventure racing, or just plain rambling around in the wilderness and on the trails.
