Finally! A discipleship book focused on Jesus and community. On theology and practice.

For much of my life, I've viewed discipleship as primarily about individual betterment and spiritual growth. It is so refreshing to hear an approach that instead focuses on the necessity of growth through and in community. The fact that the discipleship journey outlined by VinCross is inextricably interwoven with a group process and commitment speaks to the vital way in which we need each other - and are responsible to each other - as we grow in discipleship with Jesus.

The second key thing, and most foundational, for me in this book is the concept and practice that we do not change ourselves through spiritual practices, but rather we make space to be in God's presence, and it is God's presence that transforms us. This is an idea that is not just given lip-service but which VinCross weaves throughout each concept.

I greatly appreciated that the discipleship principles in this book are solidly laid on biblical foundations and that practical examples (both in touching stories and insightful illustrations, as well as in everyday how-to's) provide the framework on top of that. All of this creates the perfect space for me (and you!) to engage the material for personal spiritual growth as well as in community and in a ministry context.

The heart of the book is found in the 8 Calls of God: devotion, prayer, rest, community, healing, witness, service, and blessing. These are chapters I will keep coming back to time and time again to mine the deep resources within. I could easily fill the rest of this review with brilliant quotes from these pages, but I'll leave it up to you to disover it for yourself! No need for any more deliberation - this is a must read! I look forward to crossing paths on this Deep Calling discipleship journey!

While it may not reach the depth of Dallas Willard’s work, I truly appreciate this rare and valuable effort to address discipleship within the SDA Church. The proposed curriculum for the discipleship process is especially helpful, and I’m planning to put it to use.
