Why didn't I think of that genius idea? This is the remarkable, at times funny, story of a young entrepreneur who, aged 18 and with $4,000 and no other funding, started up invisibobble the revolutionary hair ties that have taken the haircare industry by storm. Today, Sophie Trelles-Tvede s company has sold over 100 million hair ties around the world and turns over $15 million. As a first-year university student, getting ready for a party, Sophie spotted an old telephone cord and decided to use it to tie her hair with. The next morning, she noticed something different with her she did not have a headache after untying the cord and there was not much of a mark (or kink) in her hair. The genius idea of invisibobble was born right there! This is the story of the idea and thereafter the ups and downs, funny and serious moments, of an entrepreneur's journey that will inspire others and reveal what it takes to succeed.
This one is not only an entrepreneur’s story but a story of an incredibly young, witty and female entrepreneur. She might have still had her fun at Warwick as an 18-year-old university student but Sophie Trelles-Tvede combined an ingenious revelation with her flair for entrepreneurship when she founded Invisibobble – you know, the hair tie that doesn’t leave any marks and doesn’t give you headaches and that EVERYONE wears and adores? Did you know that the creator of the telephone cord hair bobble was in her teens when she brought her product to the market? Neither did I. This non-fiction piece combines Trelles-Tvede’s experiences of bringing Invisibobble to life, the immense growth it experienced over time but also the huge challenge of the many fakes that started hitting the market. Her writing also takes you to her favourite vodka tonics, her relationship days with her then boyfriend who also happens to be her business partner, her anxieties, her TEDx talk days and some very questionable “toilet” facilities in the Chinese production sites. This isn’t just a delightful read but also truly inspiring. The challenge and care and LOVE that Trelles-Tvede put into her brand is simply remarkable. I find it very hard to believe that she founded Invisibobble at such a young age where most people’s greatest worries are their hook-ups, their final exams and what to wear at the next formal event.

Funny, inspiring, raw and real, this story is one of perseverance and risk taking - proving that passion goes a long way in business. I’d known invisibobble as a brand since 2014 but I had no clue about the backstory, or how it grew to be such a game changing brand. Sophie’s story is truly brilliant and the book is so easy to digest (unlike many other founders stories I’ve read.) I devoured it within 24hrs!
I loved, loved, loved this book. What really sets it apart from other CEO/business owner books is that it really shows the true trials and tribulations of running a global business. The book really made me understand just how difficult it is and the many problems and issues someone can face. Being a business owner isn’t sitting back and watching the money roll in. Sophie’s story is amazing and for someone so young to be learning as they go. An incredible read.
I really enjoyed this book. It gives a great insight into all the ups and downs of running your own company without all the pretentious business jargon. Sophie has a great way of showing what is important in running your business, and how things can get serious, without losing her sense of humor. All in all an interesting story.
I’m a business management student and did my entrepreneur presentation for entrepreneurship on Sophie (that‘s why I decided to read this book). Not only is her story absolutely inspiring for someone being a first-year student themselves but i loved the way she talked about her experience, telling her story naturally and using her humour as well :). Fun and easy to read!
Interesting and refreshing founder story. Great to hear it from a young women’s perspective and that includes a lot of downs as well as ups without all the jargon.
Loved everything about this book! I loved how it was funny, raw and inspiring giving insight into what it actually takes to create a successful business and not being afraid to admit the mistakes. I recommend this book to everyone!
