Loki : The Mind of a Trickster

Rate this book
The nine realms are in danger and only magic can save them.

What happens when the Norse trickster Loki makes a deal with the goddess Freya, that in order to escape punishment for his misdeeds with a Valkyrie he must flee Asgard and help fight dark forces at work?
Desperate to remain hidden from the gods, he settles in Midgard in the guise of a magician. His mission is simple; to capture his own following in order to restore their faith in magic with the hopes of saving his own poorly destined fate in the process.
Follow the master of mischief and illusion as he attempts to captivate an unsuspecting audience with a short tale in the land of fire and ice.

Before I begin this short tale allow me to introduce myself. I am the light bringer and the speaker of truths. Some know me as the god of mischief, the sly one, the trickster, the god of lies. Most just call me Loki. I am, without apology, motivated by magic, self preservation, disorder, and lust. Might I add the gods would not be able to find their way out of a brown paper bag if it was not for yours truly, but we can get to that later. For now, let us talk about that time I grew a bit bored and something forbidden caught my eye, and how I ended up hiding out in wildfire aspect creating all sorts of chaos across the nine realms...

Would have been better if it wasn't just about his forbidden love affair. I enjoyed how they wrote his character though

This was such an absolute delight to read, and I enjoyed the author’s vision of Loki! I found the relationship between him and Astrid so touching, and I hope to see more of them. This had just the right balance of fun and heartache. I can’t wait for the full book to release that this short story is connected to.

Loki TMoaT is a Adult Norse Fantasy standalone novella.

Book Cover: 4* - I thought the cover was very interesting, and naturally, very Loki lol. Don't hate me. The shield on fire with a snake slithering over it and Loki's green eyed gaze peering at you on the cover, I like it. I think if I saw this on the shelf in a store I would've been curious enough to pick it up and see what it's about.

Summary/Tagline: 5* - Oh yeah, this story very much screams Loki in my head. I wanted to know what deal Loki made with Freya to save his hide and who caught Loki's attention while throwing a middle finger at the gods while also saving their sorry butts lol. So, let's jump into this.

Characters: 5* - You only follow one character, and that character is none other than Loki himself. He's on Midgard, disguised as an actual magician, but why and for what purpose? Simple, that's what he's about to tell you. Although I've not read many Norse Mythology inspired stories and retellings, I say this is the second time the Loki's were just in sync in my head. He's playful, mischievous, but also growing increasingly frustrated with Odin and his lot. The gods are hypocrites, Loki and everyone knows it, the problem was, it was Odin and he ruled all. Although he was trying to have fun and just relieving the stress of the days away with an out of bound Valkyrie, Loki knew he could only get away with so much, another problem, it was starting to run out. I like the characterizations of these deities, it was both what I expected but also unique to this book that I very much enjoyed. Even the Valkyrie companion Loki was having fun with was so compelling and finding many comparisons with Loki that she began to fall for him, sadly, such things just don't last when you are "friends" with the God of Mischief.

World Building: 4* - I don't remember there being much in the ways of learning about Asgard and the 9 realms, but I think it was enough to state my curiosities of this version. Same for the magic system. I think if you've read enough Norse based fiction books, you already have an idea of the setting, but are also given a criticisms of the gods flaws and hypocrisies.

Story: 4* - As I said earlier, Loki is actually hiding out in Midgard in the guide of a magician, inspiring the humans to believe in magic once more. Why? To help prevent the end times, problem was, he's technically an escaped prisoner. After being announced onto the stage under a different name, Loki begins to tell a story, a very SPECIFIC story, of a Valkyrie he saw kinship in, and the consequences of being caught by Odin. By the end of his story, we learn of his deal with Freya, the promise he broke with his Valkyrie companion, and Odin constantly at his heels trying to capture him and return him to Asgard to face punishment, all so that he could inspire us mortals to believe in magic, to believe in the gods, because whether we liked it or not, Ragnarok was coming, and we need to be ready for it. I seriously enjoyed this story. I smiled, I laughed, and I got choked up a few times reading this. I sooooo want more of this Loki. Period.

Over All: 4* - Yeah so overall I really enjoyed this story. It was a short and quick read, got it done in a sitting or two I believe. I love this take of Loki and both his love and hate of Asgard and the deities that rule the realms. I seriously can't wait to read more from this author because I reeeeeally love her take on these characters too. If you love a morally grey Loki that's more playful than spiteful, then I totally recommend you pick up this story, its also perfect for those who like a light read and those who just love Norse Mythology too. Enjoy your new read.

Somehow, I missed that this book was only 30 something pages long, but at least I can say it's another book towards my goal this year.

This story has very little substance. I've read a lot of books with Loki as the protagonist, and this has been one of the weaker ones; as others have already stated, there's too much sex and not enough plot, and the fact that it's so short makes it all the worse.

There's no time to get attached to characters or invested in the story. A hollow and disappointing read.

I won a copy of this book via a giveaway on the authors Instagram profile. All opinions are my own!

I loved how short but packed full of information this was. I don’t a lot of knowledge of Norse mythology and this was a good starter story, especially for someone who is wanting to dip their toes into this genre.

It gives a good overview of loki, his inner musings, and the shenanigans he gets up to! I hope the author will add on to this short story in the future, I would love to know what happens next in Loki’s adventure!

If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would absolutely do that. Anything less feels outrageous. This book is bursting with beautiful imagery, and humor that is both relevant and well-placed. Loki’s character traits in this story are very entertaining, and the other characters are believable. If you love Norse mythology, or just a delightful tale in general, this book is a boost of pure serotonin!

As a short story, it was a delight to read.
Loki had the "necessary" cruelty, if I might say, as a God of Mischief, in opposition to every other book or story where he is first described as a cruel but afterwards a very loving person eventually placing his as a nothing but a loving sweetheart.

Okay.

This was okay, nothing too fancy or elaborate, not that sexy either. Was Loki his trickster self, yes. But that's about it.
