Greville Maynard Wynne was a British spy famous for his involvement with, and imprisonment as a result of, the espionage activities of Oleg Penkovsky.
Wynne wrote about his time as a spy in a book entitled The Man from Odessa, first published in 1981. He preceded this book with The Man from Moscow: The Story Of Wynne and Penkovsky (1967) and published in the USA as Contact on Gorky Street: a British Agent's Own First-Hand Account of His Mission to Moscow (1968). This was one of the early examples of a book being published about secret work that the government never expected to be made public.

Entertaining isn't the word for this firsthand account of Gleville Wynne, the poor bastard who served as Oleg Penkovsky's intermediary and found himself spending a year and a half in Lubyanka and Vladimir prisons. But riveting? Oh yes.

I originally thought this would be more about Penkovsky's work providing scientific and technical information to the British and American intelligence wonks in the early 1960s, but Wynne was primarily involved with running Penkovsky's secret parcels to the actual agents.

Plenty hear to learn of Penkovsky's motivations and thought process in his day to day errands for the West, but this is mostly about Wynne's ability to navigate the extremely cruel Soviet penal system and maintain a vestige of sanity. Well worth your time if you are into this sort of cloak and dagger stuff.

I didn't know anything about him, or even about nuclear war, so I watched the movie which it is a good movie .then I read the book ..and I think Penkovsky was right ; Maybe they've been just two people but this is how things change.
