Dealing with Demons

Rate this book

Some deals can’t be broken.

According to the family curse, Tessa has until her next birthday to select her future husband. However, choosing would mean his premature death. Unwilling to condemn any man to that fate, Tessa searches for an explanation behind the curse and the rules that dictate her life. What she learns is more terrifying than she could have imagined.

A demon brokered a deal with her ancestor in exchange for a companion, and he's come to collect. Tessa has a choice to make. Pay the debt or condemn a man to death. Her time to decide is running out, and as she’s learned, breaking the family rules always has consequences.

This book is da BOMB!!! From beginning till the end it is a heartfelt rollercoaster of emotions....With all the decisions Tessa has...or is forced into...can she determine what the best path for her is....ending the curse with Morik or passing it on to her daughter/daughter's...

Nice story. Annoying characters. Slow romance. Tense drama. Scary stalkers.

This should have been a series. I wanted more - too much was left unsaid.

My 4 stars go only to Morik. The rest can suck it.

I have a huge TBR pile and a few books all downloaded on my Kindle and ready to go, but every once in awhile as I’m scrolling through my Goodreads feed I come across a review for a book that grabs my attention. Touch was one of those books, after reading the review from my friend Trissa, I checked out the synopsis and it sounded like a fun read so I decided to give it a try.

While I enjoyed Touch, I think it could have been developed a little better. I enjoyed the idea of the story and thought it had pretty original concept going for it. My biggest problem with it though was I felt it had TMPI (too much pointless information) Syndrome. It tended to be overly detailed/wordy at times and it really slowed down the story for me at times. For example:

"To the right of the door, Mona had several coat hooks and a rubber mat just below it. Boots rested on it. I’d be able to wear boots here and have somewhere to keep them after I changed to sneakers.”

There is stuff like this throughout the book, it doesn’t add anything to the story or mythology and is just pointless, IMO. So much time was spent on pointless details that I felt the character/story/pacing suffered.

I liked Morik, or at least the idea of him. By the end I still wasn’t ever sure what he was exactly, in my head I kept thinking he was some kind of fae, maybe Goblin. From what I’ve read in other books he seemed to fit that mythology, but that might just be me. We get to know him mostly through non-verbal communication, mostly through his always color-changing eyes. While I thought that was kind of cool, being able to read his mood by his eye color, I would have liked more actual conversations and to learn more about him and what his life was like outside of Tessa. It felt like his whole life centered around Tessa and her family. No wonder he was so lonely.

I liked Tessa, she was a fun heroine even if she did take a long time to come to the obvious decision. I liked the relationship between Morik and Tessa. He was a little possessive, but in a protective way. I liked that she was able to see the real him and was willing to give him a chance. I was left with a lot of unanswered questions, but also felt satisfied with how everything wrapped up. A little slow in parts, but overall an enjoyable read.

Wow. Okay first off, Melissa approached me and my friend who do a blog, asked us to review two of her books for her a free book in exchange for a honest review, my friend was going to do this one, while I did Melissa's other book Hope(less) (which you should check out after checking this out just saying) ANYWAYS the second book to Hope(less) came out not oh i don't know a little less than a week after i finished Hope(less) (there is point to this i swear) so i read that as soon as i could get my hands on it. Also asked by Melissa for an honest review of that book, but i already bought, but gave it an honest review as i will always do. There is the thing, i have been wondering around looking for another book to read, and i just decided, yes i am going to do this because i loved Melissa's writing style with the other two books but i kept thinking...well i love werewolves and cross species for authors can sometimes be a bit...difficult just if they are use to writing about one its hard to separate yourself from that type of paranormal. So I will admit when i went into this i was a little concerned, I did not know if this was published/written before or after Hope(less) still don't either way. I was a fool for waiting so long.

Quite frankly I would give this book 10 stars out of 5.

So with that all said and done. Here is the thing, this book went from the highest of highs, to the lowest of lows, so I have a couple different songs that i would choose for this book. First off being: "You're All I Have" by Snow Patrol, (going with this theme for a second) "Another Lonely Day" by Ben Harper. These two because of the relationship and also the two MCs separate and together. Other songs for the book just certain points or overall are: "My Love" by Sia, "As Much As I Could Ever" by City and Colour. And lastly a little bit of "Nicest Thing" by Kate Nash for the beginning-ish of the book.

Kay so first thoughts: What a wonderfully beautiful love story. I have never felt so lonely with two MCs then i have ever with them. It was heartbreaking at times to read because i just knew that they would just create magic together, but i could also see and understand the hesitation of Tessa. I could submerge into this story. My sister came into my room while I was curled up around my laptop reading, me and my Kindle, Kale, are arguing at the moment about putting this book on there in other words he is being a bitch and a half. Anyways she looked at me like i was crazy, but i explained, she still thought i was crazy. Eh you win some you lose some, either way as a reader that totally loses themselves into a book I found that i couldn't be pulled out of my feelings for anything. That is not to say that i read this nonstop because i didn't because i am pretty sure i would have died from my emotions. I needed seconds to pace, or you know i am only human, so food is usually needed, and we all know what follows food. Anyways moving on. Read this book. Seriously. Do it. Right now. Go on.

My thoughts on plot: Someone else's review that i read mentioned how this was a love story, and there wasn't a whole lot of action, and its true. This is a story about a girl that needs to find love before her 17th birthday, its sort of like a harsher, backwards, Beauty and the Beast Tale which only made me love it more as i love that fairytale, its my favorite. Belle is the shit...but that is not the point of this review. While i ususally like paranormal stuff because in the midst of falling in llllooovveee there is action going on, i read this really quickly without ever getting bored. I loved almost every moment of it, and if you are a paranormal fan that likes the action there is a bit in here, do i think that should stop you from trying this book out? hell no. I think its worth your time, and you love...what? no you should love it. Anyways here is the thing Tessa needs to find a male to love before she turns 17, and while the curse is sort of glossed over at first there is reason for it, so keep going all is revealed. Secrets are kept from her, and two beings are after her. I say "beings" because the book calls them demons, well Tessa does, but here is the thing its never confirmed by Morik, and I don't know if i want to consider them "demons" per-say.

Characters:

**First off, I know i have said this about Melissa in my other reviews but if you haven't seen them, here is what i need to say. She has such a beautiful way of writing, I love everyone of her characters from them to being completely different from the last, to the point that the men are amazing, in all ways. At times in all her books the books become slightly character driven which i don't mind at all you can have a kickass plot all you want but if your characters are non-dynamic, and have no real personality then its not worth the read. Melissa makes it worth the read every damn time. So with that said, let me tell you about the characters.

Tessa: Its told through her as first person, I loved her as a MC as i love all Melissa's MCs and thankfully she doesn't fall into the well there are slight differences from this character to a different MC that Melissa wrote about. Tessa is a little bitter, but she does try her best to make everyone happy at the same time. I love that she did try to put everyone before herself, mostly because no i am not gloating, i am like that most of times, but in the end she does try to find solutions to her problems. She is smart, she is compassionate, and when needs be stands up for herself. Her courage might be lacking when it comes to asking those hard questions, its real, its one of those things where no one wants to do it, but in the end when you need answers you do it, which she did. I really liked her, but she was stubbornly silly at times and i just wanted to yell at her, but i did see where she would think one way verses another. For a girl who can see her future with every guy she touches, she is suddenly throw into a situation where she is in the same boat as the rest of us, and playing the guessing game, this book artfully shows that sometimes its worth taking the risk even if you fail.

Morik: Okay i need to complain just for a moment: Melissa, what the hell are you trying to do to me Woman? Everyone MC boy she writes about becomes my new love, and i realize that i might never find my love and my heart breaks, then i hope i will find someone slightly as amazing as these guys are. So Morik, I never thought that he was evil, i couldn't see it. And that one of the things that i really like about Melissa's gents, they all share that same trait of well, you have to watch them, and you can see how much they care. They even say the most loveliest things too. Like some of my all time favorite things Morik says are:

“I protect what is mine. What I like comes second to your safety.”

“I don’t know what you want from me,” I whispered. He bent close, his lips a breath away from my own. “A kiss.”

One more because i can't resist!

this is from Tessa to Morik

“I’m so glad you found me. I didn’t know it then, but I know it know. That was one of the best moments of my life. It always will be.”

Swoon!

Anyways so more about Morik: Now he is your average, horned, elven earred, tall, dark, being with the an odd personality. He is sort of quiet, but since he is not native-ly human he watches, and asks about normal things for us. But he blends well, he is that silent, awesome types. He is really hard to explain, he is just... well almost perfect. Protective, possessive, but not in an overbearing way. He is charming, and sexy. And and and and yes i am in love.

Lately I have been only talking about the MCs of the books, like the girl and guy, but i wanna talk about Beatriz for a second because she was amazing. Sure she is a little quiet at the beginning but she gets a bigger part at the end and i totally love her, funny, strong, sarcastic, the perfect best friend, right? ;)

Oh that ending! Talk about heart-wrenchingly beautiful. I wanted to die, and i wanted to cry, and i wanted to sing, and i wanted to jump up and down. I loved it from cover, to end. And as i love it, i hope that it stays as a stand-alone because its perfect.

*oh again one last thing and i have said this about Melissa's work before, but if you are looking at this and see its "Young Adult" I don't think that should make you turn away either because the writing in this, and the characters don't really scream normal stereo-typical YA, granted no sex, but the characters are all very mature, and its totally awesome

Alright that is the end of this review thanks for sticking it out with me until the end. You are a really sport and a half. So now here is where i tell you that i have a ... blog oh wait i already said that earlier but i didn't give you any info about it, after you have read this of course and you have read Melissa's other books, because you should, you can check out other indie authors on the blog that i share with my friend, and she does mostly compt. fiction stuff, but she does like certain paranormal, while i am the opposite, i do mostly paranormal, fantasy, scifi, with a few compt. fics thrown in once and a blue moon. either way if you want to check us out you can if you don't then you don't. here is the link we appreciate you and i am sure the authors do as well

Tessa Sole has a curse that has been following her family for centuries. She needs to find a mate before she turns 17 years old. If she does not find a mate, she dies. Tessa has a gift. She can touch a boy and see her future with him.

“I’d once touched a boy and saw my fate as an abused wife.”

The curse also had Tessa at home and asleep when the sun goes down until the sun came up for the fear that a creature may find her and hurt her.

Morik, a creature and one that specializes in making deals with people, deals that can leave awful consequences, makes a deal with Tessa. Tessa desperate for some normalcy in her teen life agrees to the deal. The deal will allow her to leave her house in the dark safely for 10 days. Morik agrees but if she spends 1 hour a day with him for those 10 days.

This book took me by surprise. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. From the start, I loved Tessa’s character. She is teased in school because she is different, but she handles it so well. She does not whine and does not ask for pity. She wishes just be able to be and do things like a “normal” teenager.

I just really liked the fact that Tessa's character did not play games with Morik. Even when another boy showed interest in her, she always had Morik’s feelings in consideration. And Morik, I could not help but like him. Even though early in the book, you know he is a demon and not a good one (like I really thought demons were good, HA). Anyway, Morik grows on you. He is so charming and you can’t help but like him even after you know that he does bad things.

There is no insta-love in this book. The feelings that the characters develop happen over time. Maybe Morik, had feelings for Tessa immediately, but I wasn’t sure if he’s intention for making the deal was for another objective.

This book kept me wanting to read. I found every opportunity to open my Kindle. I was sad it was over.

Did I skim? No. I did not want it to end.

Did I feel connected to the characters? Yes, immediately.

Pace of the story: Very good.

Positives: Great characters. Tessa was a breath of fresh air with her awesome personality. The kiss was hot even though very innocent.

Negatives: The ending. I am a big cliffy/epilogue reader. The book could be awful, but if the ending is awesome, I change my opinion about the entire book. The ending to “Touch” was left “open” which was the only disappointment. However, I asked the author and she said there may be a sequel. I hope the “maybe” turns to a yes and is done quickly. I want more Tessa and Morik.

Do I recommend? Yes.

Book Format Read: A copy of this book was given by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Touch
By: Melissa Haag
Series: Stand Alone
Pages: 353
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Rating: 2/5
Blurb: A touch. That’s all it takes for Tessa to know her future with a boy. Her mom tells her she needs to choose her best option before she turns seventeen. Problem is, she sees all her ‘options’ dying before they turn thirty. That may have worked for the last fourteen generations of women in her family tree, but she can’t choose and condemn someone to an early grave.

An unfortunate incident at school starts a chain of events that reveals a centuries old chaos demon and a chance to remove her ‘gift’ forever.

My Review

" "I love you." -Morik "

I picked this book up because I loved Hope[less] by the same author; Melissa Haag. But I have to admit that it bored me. I had to focus so hard on finishing this book. I was very disappointed with it so let me tell you why.

Okay the book was all about a girl who could see her entire future with a man. Before she turned seventeen she would have too chose a man to be her husband. The problem was that the man she choses would die at a young age and she couldn't live with the guilt. Then Morik turns and changes Tessa's world. I loved the plot and bought it because of the overview. Now let me tell you what I hated.

The beginning of this book was really good and kept me entertained but as the book wore on it got very boring and extremely tedious. I feel like it took forever to get to know all the characters.

I hated Tessa, I really did. In the beginning she was really quite awesome but she started becoming whiny and depressing. Around the end of the book she really got on my last nerve and I almost gave up reading it. She just was all around annoying.

Then there was Morik and he was similar to Tessa. I felt that I didn't really get to know him that much. He was a big mystery and even when he was talking with Tessa I thought he was just a huge question mark. There was nothing to really grasp on to with him.

One of the only characters I liked was Beatriz. She was the sort of friend I would want to stand by me when I was in need. But yet again Tessa the moany wouldn't have it. Beatriz was defiantly my favourite character in this book.

Now the writing was absolutely beautiful but extremely long winded. So this is why I gave it a two out of five. Not my best review I know but I had to say it

I would like to thank the author Melissa Haag and Never Too Old for Y. A and N. A Books for allowing me to read this book for a honest review.

Tessa is a sixteen year old girl that lives with her mother, aunt Grace, Grandma and Grand aunt Danielle. She has the gift or the cursed that when she touches a boy, she can see her future with him, but the boy always dies at a young age. Tessa must choose a boy before she turns seventeen, the problem is that she cannot choose and condemn someone to an early grave. After an incident at school, Tessa and her family move to a nearby town, then she discovers the truth behind her family gift and meets a demon of chaos, who knows more about her family past than her own family. Will Tessa choose a boy and condemn him to a early death or will she remove her family curse once and for all?

I literally couldn't put this book down I started one Friday night and finish it early evening on Saturday, I just loved how the author developed the characters within the story, the involment of each secondary character had a purpose within the story and the final ending. In other words I love this book, I would read it again just to remember the relationships that were formed. I loved MORIK, the way his character introduces himself to Tessa and then how you end up falling for his flaws and his virtues, he was not your typical knight in shining armor but someone who no matter what has your back. I like the friendship of Tessa with Beatriz, there were parts that made me laugh and cry because of those two.

I truly love the ending of the story and I would love to read more about the romance between the characters and how they fall in love by spending time together and getting to know each other even though they were different in many aspects they both have a happy ending.

*A copy has been given to me by the author for an honest review*

What a breath of fresh air was this book. So different from most of the others I've read.
I loved the development of Tessa's and Morick's relationship. The fact that it wasn't insta love made me so glad. I am stuffed full of the insta love. Come on. Nothing is that easy. You have to work for it.
I don't believe I've read another book where the characters worked so much for it.
The plot was just enough to give a rush but not to overwhelm. I felt that this book was mostly about acceptance and hope and not drama. Of course, there was drama but it wasn't overdone. For which I am so grateful.
Beatriz is such a wonderful friend to have. I think that every girl should have a friend like her. She was loyal, and funny, and smart, the best for our Tess. I even loved Brad who was a very nice side character and brought more depth to the story.
I am so so so so so happy that there weren't any love triangles or rectangles. I am sick of that. But I was also amused by the slight jealousy from Morik. He was so CUTE.
All the gestures, the small touches, the handmade gifts. All was a welcome reprieve.
I enjoyed reading this book so much and I recommend it for whoever wants to read something not disturbing for a change :)
It is a easy and fun read.
Thank you Ms. Haag, you're awesome!

This is the first book I've ever read by Melissa Haag, let's just say, she has me as a loyal reader from here on out. This book was AMAZING.

** There maybe some spoilers**

Tessa has a gift to be able to see her further with a guy by a simple touch. She has to choose which guy before her seventeenth birthday, or else...

She can't just choose, because the guy she choose will die shortly after, then she meet Morik, some kind a human creature with horns and pointy ears. Morik made a deal with her ancestors father 200+ years ago.

Long story short, she gets to know Morik and becomes friends with him. Maybe more maybe not, you will just have to read the book.

There are some twist and turns during the book, it keeps you wanting to read more and more of it s you go. This book had me at the first two paragraphs, I stayed up til after 3am reading.

This book is a must BUY. If you are thinking about getting a sample, don't bother, because you will end up buying it, just trying to save you that extra step. BUY THE BOOK.

Thank you Melissa Haag for writing a wonderful book, I will continue to read any books you write.

So I would like to start with I did not receive a free copy in exchange for a review.
I freaking loved this book. The writing was evocative. The pacing was fast enough that I did not end up skimming to read faster (my really bad habit). The book was interesting enough that I did not try and guess ahead I just absorbed it as it happened. I read it between 2:30am and 6am (finished not too long ago).
I never liked teenaged girls, even when I was one, but the girls were mature, intelligent, and NOT too stupid to live. The boys drew my sympathy even after being such little jerks.
So, I usually don't give 5 stars on general principle, but I hope to draw more attention to this book. I have sent the title to my friends as a recommended read.
In closing I will say while the massive amount of editorial mistakes are distracting I did learn a new word, so that's cool too.

Just finished Touch, and I have a serious book hangover! Melissa has a wonderful and amazing imagination! Her books draw me in and blow me away. I love how she takes something that I would consider evil, bad or extremely scary and makes me love, cry, and laugh. I love the original and unique relationships between the characters; Morik and Tessa are beautiful together! Tessa is a normal girl, not gorgeous or super strong, (well as normal as you can get, when you can see how your relationship with a guy is going to end up and you have to be asleep by the time the sun goes down). Morik is so unexpected, really scary at first, then you realize what a beautiful and lonely character he is. He is loyal, loving and selfless. I was brought to love something that seemed unlovable. I was not ready to be done with this book!

I really, really really enjoyed this great story. It's a great young adult novel that is very well written, has a great paranormal romance story line, and it was hard for me to put down too.

I shall read more stories from this author. I love her style and class. I have her "Hopeless" e-book, and I shall for sure read that one as well (and it's a series so I'll be reading the whole thing).

I totally recommend reading this one if you like young adult stories.

So good! I know that urban fantasies about high school girls meeting a paranormal suiter are a dime a dozen now days, but I found this one unique and far better than a lot of the "same old, same old" being rolled out. Besides some bullying, there is none of that teen drama and immaturity that can get old, especially if the reader isn't a teen.

The concept of the demon deal, while old, was a refreshing breath of fresh air in this setting and with the situation of Tessa's family. I really enjoyed the mystery behind it.

I did feel like there were a few superfluous characters ( Like Aunt Grace, what was the point of her?), but that's not really a big deal. I loved the close knit family dynamic, though I felt bad for the mom since she is cast in a kind of bad light with her protectiveness, but who I empathize with as a mother and I feel as if, given the husband thing and the emotional turmoil of the whole situation, has a pretty hard life.

I LOVE Tessa and Morik's relationship. It's very sweet. It's not based on pointless sexual tension, which is sometimes a pitfall of these types of books, but has a good balance of situation, personality, and emotion. Their bond, along with the cute-awkwardness, is really what makes the book for me.

I'm rounding it up to five stars because it had me hooked to the end, but I do have a small grievance with the end. It's very abrupt and, since it follows the climax and a long absence from Morik, I felt like Tessa and Morik didn't have enough time together in those finishing moments to be satisfying to the reader. I mean, if there was a little epilogue of them together after everything it would have really helped. In the ending notes the author mentions she would like to write more of Tessa and Morik and I REALLY hope she does-and not just other stories where they are side characters. Even just a short story to wrap some things up between them would be amazing ( there are still some questions to be answered about the antagonist and some questions which were only touched on, like if Tessa and Morik could have children.

I just reread the book after a year and I just want to BEG the author for a short story or something to really round out the ending. Even just some bonus scenes of Morik and Tessa's life together would do wonders to make the ending satisfying. It's such a good book otherwise!

This book follows Tessa and her family curse. She has been given the ability to touch any man and see her future with him. It allows her the foresight to pick the best husband for herself before she turns 17. Unfortunately whoever she chooses will die a few short years after marriage. With only months left, she must decide whether to follow the women in her family's advice and pick based on children or follow her heart. Only her heart wants love, but she can't bring herself to choose someone she could love and sentence him to death. When she is mercilessly bullied and forced to switch school, her life changes. The beast that has stalked her family for centuries finds her. Only something unexpected happens, he gives her an option and information she never had before. Give him a chance as her potential husband, and gain some freedom in return. She makes the deal and learns all the details of the curse her ancestors never passed down. With her new knowledge she knows she can be the one to break the curse. All she has to do is get to know Morick. Once she does she knows she can chose him and end the curse. Now she just has to figure out how to get her heart and brain on the same page while there's still time. With the help of new friends and a reluctant family she navigates this new world in her rush to make her decision before time runs out.
This book was such an original idea, and had some twists I never saw coming! The characters were a great cast. From those you hated, to those you couldn't help but love. Overall it was about Tessa's journey to adulthood, and i loved watching her grow. She has to learn to make her own decisions on what's best for her own life despite what the adults in her life thought. This book had me shocked, laughing, and crying. Pick it up and fall into the amazing world of Tessa and Morick.

I really, really wanted to love this book. I'm a sucker for beauty and the beast themed loved stories. But this one, just seemed to fall flat. It started out great. The voice of the misfit who didnt really mind being one just as long as she was left alone, sucked me into the story. Belinda, the curse and its mystery made for such an intriguing set up. When Morik turned up in the early third of the book and she decides to introduce him to her family after ONE TOUCH (what?), i began to wonder, where is the conflict? Sure, there are some cute OTP moments (who loved the piece about the missing gloves?!), but surely this writer had more?

The last third of the book really let itself down. There were so many things to explore - mom's wedding and her having to let go of her child, aunt danielle's secret, whats aunt grace's backstory, hell what's belinda's story (i cant believe she got positioned as "the selfish woman" who wouldnt give herself to the demon/creature her father offered her to), what are the real challenges of loving someone otherworldly. But what did we get? Brian (so random) and Ahgred (WHAT?). So basically, girl meets creature, thinks "eh, between him and death, he doesnt seem like such a bad choice", they go to party, they hang out, he drives her places and eats meals with her family. then he gets shot, then she gets shot. but then everything is ok and they live happily ever after. THE END

The writer did her job and kept me reading to the end because i was invested enough about the OTP to know how things ended for them, but the two stars are for wasting opportunities to dig deeper into our characters' psyche and really explore the difficult, implicit things that make relationships and decisions difficult. So disappointed.

Touch begins with us getting to see how very strange Tessa's life is, and her unique ability to see certain futures when she touches people. The problem is her future is actually some what uncertain. And her family doesn't seem to understand why they do the things that they do, but they continue to do them because they've all been warned of the consequences if they don't. That is until, Tessa finds someone who isn't exactly human who seems to have all of the answers she's looking for, but unsure if she can trust him and running out of time she is at a loss of what to do!

This book was very good, and kept me interesting from the start. I thought it was very different from a lot of young adult books I've read before, and that just made it better. I loved the things that Tessa was able to discover about her life and how things have happened to her and her family. I also really liked Tessa. She was just very smart, and didn't want to just accept her fate like the rest of her family! I really admired that in her.
Then I also really liked her and the hero together. They rocked! It was a beautiful sweet relationship that I loved to see grow! I actually loved it so much, that I wouldn't mind see more of them in the future!

So, now I hope there will be more to this story, and I as I'm coming to learn Melissa Haag did not disappoint with this one! It was awesome! I highly recommend it!

This was my first time reading anything by Melissa Haag, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Mystery. Suspense. Romance. All wrapped up in a paranormal package with demons. What's not to love?

It was an intriguing tale that gripped me from the first page.

Tessa knows her family is far from what most would consider normal, although she doesn't understand why she must abide by special rules. Like being home before nightfall. When she meets the being called Morik, she's scared and reluctant to trust him. But he knows far more about her family than anyone else, and she's ready to end the nightmarish cycle that's befallen her family -- cursed to lose the men they love at an early age. The question is WHY does it happen? Only Morik can answer that for her.

Watching the two of them learn about one another, grow closer as friends, and then as something more, kept me engaged and eager to flip the next page. Their relationship was a slow build, and I started to wonder if Tessa would ever realize she was in love with the demon. The more we got to know Morik, the more I wanted a hunky demon of my own.

The only downside to this story is that it's a stand-alone, which means we don't get to find out what happens with the other demons in the book. I hope one day Ms. Haag might sit down and write about the other two. I'd love to know more.

Fantastically cute, emotional paranormal YA read about high schooler Tessa who has a family secret, although she herself is not privvy to the why's of her family's rules, which include: be home before dark, be magically chanted to sleep each night, and choose a boy before age 17. With only a few month before she has to choose and armed with her family's gift to see the future at a touch, she must decide between those who call her a freak and those who bully her with physical abuse. But Tessa is in for so much more when she finally interacts with the creature who is ultimately the control behind the way of life she, her mother and mother's mother and so on must live--Morik. I'll not say more because it's such a fun, intriguing and unique plotline, but I will say that I want a Morik. His naivete about humanity but courteousness and love regardless of his little human interaction make me want to pat him on the head and snuggle under his capable arms at the same time. I must warn: I did end up sobbing towards the end, but ended with a watery smile. Already a fan of Melissa Haag's Judgement of Six series, I don't know how I missed this one. I can only hope she someday gives us more!

This is the very first book Melissa Haag wrote, and all I can think is "how the heck did she do that?" Most first novels lack that grab you by the shoulders and hold on til it's done intensity and interest that you come to love about books. Not the case with Touch. Tessa and her family may be odd, but they are completely real and emotionally complex. Then there's Morik, who is much more than he seems. Paranormal fans, fantasy fans, mystery fans, and romance fans will all find something to love in this novel! I read it during a read-along and was supposed to go a few chapters at a time, but once I read about 10 pages I knew I wasn't putting the book down until I was finished. Well I did have to take a break to interact with my child at her insistence, but otherwise read from start to finish. And I will certainly be re-reading this book, which is about the best compliment I can think of at the moment. Thank you Melissa for a wonderful "touching" story! 5 epic stars love!

Touch is an amazing book! From the beginning you are quickly immersed in Tessa’s life. I love how the book is a paranormal romance, but it also has mystery to it. From the beginning, you are evolving with Tessa and learning about her family history and the curse that has been put on her family. You are feeling the same feeling she is experiencing as you are uncovering more of the mystery. Tessa has a unique gift that I have not seen before in other paranormal reads. I love that about this book. I was expecting a similar read to other paranormal reads and was blown away by the uniqueness of the book. This book will keep you guessing until the very end and of course has a heart pounding climax that will tug hard at your heart strings. Melissa Haag is an amazing writer and I cannot wait to read more of her books. Maybe even a sequel or epilogue if we are lucky. =]

this book proves that you don't have to be selfish, snarky, sarcastic or rude to be a strong female character. I loved Tess and her kind heart and awesome manners. maybe I'm strange but I really enjoy reading a book where people show gratitude and think of others feelings. I like that it's a stand alone novel. I would have loved an epilogue but my imagination will just have to suffice. was it perfect? no, not even close. did it keep me reading past my bedtime? absolutely! clean read. the pace was a little off, some parts could have been shorter and some parts (like the ending) were rushed. original creative story.

It Dragged

...... It just went on and on and on until it finally fizzled out.

Maybe that's a little harsh. I don't know, I'm pretty uncertain at how I really feel. I'm pretty sure I absolutely adored the idea of the book and the demon male character and I'm pretty sure I absolutely detested the lead female and the actual writing.

It was too much of an adult themed story with young immature characters. And did I mention how much it dragged????

It's a shame that I didn't enjoy this book seeing as how much I liked this author's Beauty and the Beast adaptation.

Touching story

Touch is such a sadly sweet story. Tessa is condemned to choices that she doesn't want to make and then Morik comes along and helps to open her life to other possibilities.
Melissa gives us a new story about love and sacrifice. I was a liitle skeptical about a "demon" as a main character, but I fell in love with Morik and you will too.

Even though Melissa Haag is my favorite author and I follow all her work, this book wasn't really my cup of tea. The plot was great, and the beginning of the story had a great start, however, I felt as if the book wasn't complete in the ending. We never found out what happens after she chooses him, or what that choice is going to give for results. Also, we never get to see more of his world.

It’s kind of one of those books where you need a minute to recover after finishing, simply because of the sheer emotional rollercoaster it takes you on.

However I do have notes…
1. The ending needs an epilogue or at least a glimpse into their future, or even an explanation as to why everything is hunky dory now, because it felt a little light on details after the big climax

2. A chunk of the Winter dance thing seemed to be missing, as they went from dancing once second to commenting on ditching Bea and then dinner… The transition was sloppy and looked like it had had a paragraph cut right in the middle.

3. The ending seemed weird she told Brad she was dying but then she wasn’t and he didn’t ask questions???? Huh???? In fact a lot seems to be assumed at the end for the sake of a quick happy ending. Even Morik’s return seemed like a cheap shot.

Overall it was an interesting take on the “family curse” sub-genre. I like a building romance between the two leads. It felt real, and read 1000x better than other instalove romances I’ve read, it just needs a touch more editing in some places.
Oh but I did love that they didn’t just drop some character 5seconds after introducing them, that was nice also.

Beautiful love story about a doubly-cursed young woman named Tessa and a demon named Morik. The book was recently revised, but I never read the original.
Due to actions by their ancestors, the women in Tessa's family (and there are always only women) have to marry by 17 or they will die. If they do marry, their children will inherit the curse and their husbands will die prematurely. Prior to age 17, they must be home and asleep before sunset, and cannot wake before sunrise.
Also, whenever they touch a boy, they will learn his fate if the two marry, and how many children they will have. This causes them to be shunned as freaks by their peers.
Tessa meets one of the demons who cursed her family, and the selfish actions that led to the curse. Poor Morik just wants to have companionship. Tessa must decide if she can overlook his differences (strangely-colored eyes, fangs, and horns), live with what will happen if the two marry, and whether Morik truly wants her for herself.
Tessa and Morik court, but two of Tessa's classmates suffer terribly due partly to their own actions and partly due to actions of the demons. Just when things were starting to go well, violence precipitates the conclusion.
I'd love to learn more about the two in a sequel.
