*3.5* The story begins with earthquakes all over the world, and plague- spreading animals threatening humanity’s existence. It’s quite intense!

Cliffhanger

Mya has been separated from her friends, and she is determined to reunite with her family. The introduction of a gray skinned creature with yellow eyes is terrifying. He gradually reveals his intelligence and humanity. Their evolving relationship was so fun to read.

He held out his hand, not touching me, but silently asking to be touched. It surprised me how much I wanted to take it.

There are lots of predictable tropes, which is kinda expected from this genre. Not sure if I am going to read the second book, even though I am curious to see where this relationship goes.

Super helpful of my library to only carry book 3 and 6 in this series.

Drivel! Absolute drivel!

"I'd only made it this far because of dumb luck, because of my boobs."

An earthquake causes a zombie apocalypse and also opens up an underground world filled with chisel chested, well-endowed grey men. One of these grey men saves our main character, learns English by listening to steamy audiobooks, and spends the entire book groping her as they make their way through a zombie infested land.

The End.

Book 4 in my Zombie-a-thon!

**3/5 stars**

I was impressed by the first three chapters because the authors managed to setup the eerie tension found at the dawn of a zombie apocalypse. At that point, we are not familiar with any of the characters, yet, we are still engulfed in their situation and quick decision making. I really liked this concept where the origins of this disaster was more paranormal than anything; with Hellhounds attacking humans, transmitting the virus with a bite and transforming them into what were called Infected (acting pretty much like zombies).

I would say that I really enjoyed the first 30% of this book because it was engaging and I was really curious to know more about this apocalypse and why it happened. The emergency of the situation paired with the interesting concept really hooked me there.

During the entirety of this book, we follow Mya who tries to find her family in this mess. I really liked her at the beginning because I felt like she had a good sense of survival, her decision making was quick and she seemed very collected. I really had high hopes for her but she ended up being a little bit boring. She was stubborn, and that good sense of survival that she had at the start disappeared quickly. I found that her decisions and thought process were questionable at times. She could clearly see that Drav was trying to protect her, even if they couldn't communicate properly for a good chunk of the book, yet, she kept trying to go by herself to find humans to help her; humans who could get infected and easily be overpowered by Hellhounds, Infected and Shadow demons. I don't know, I just didn't like her in the end. I found her annoying and uninteresting.

I’d only made it this far because of pure, dumb luck. Because of my boobs.-Mya

As for Drav, I found him super awkward. The start was a little bit of a me Tarzan, you Jane situation. His character wasn't really appealing to me. The only reason he didn't kill Mya was because she had boobs. Literally. There was no women where he was from and so, he was really curious about Mya, following her and constantly wanting to touch her. The good thing about him was his fast learning ability; communication with him became smoother with each chapter, making him look less and less like a caveman. Not much is known of him, just that he appeared at the same time as Hellhounds, and that he is able to easily kill Infected, making him the perfect protector for Mya. I liked how protective he was, even if he was very commanding and a little bit overbearing.

“Boobs,” he said, reaching for one.

The thing with this is that there was no real romance. There was no tension, no confusing feelings and no chemistry. The repetitiveness of the routine Drav and Mya fall into during her quest to find her family wasn't really exciting. It's like, stuff happened but they all felt empty and uninteresting. There was also no steam at all in this book...I'm guessing it happens in the next ones, as this is part one of three. The slow burn tag probably stretches on the second book as well. There is absolutely no burn in this first one. Demon Ember? Nah, more like Demon Frost.

✔️Cliffhanger
✔️h POV
✔️Virgin H
✔️No cheating
✔️No OW/OM
✔️Push and pull
✔️Slow burn
🔥 Steam level: 0/5
Trigger warning

So, since I wasn't completely hooked by this book, I'm probably not going to read the next ones, especially knowing there are TEN in this series. The first three books is a trilogy following Drav and Mya while the others seem to be taking place in the same apocalypse but with different characters. Like I said at the beginning of my review, the first 30% was promising but the rest was just not interesting enough for me to pursue reading this series. It wasn't bad, just not my cup of tea.

What can I say? This was one of the strangest books I've read and it kept me hooked. Somehow.

The story is told by Mya, a girl in college (or uni, whatever it is) who suddenly finds herself in a zombie (?) apocalypse caused by (hell)hounds from a place that's not called 'Hell'. That's all I know, really.

She gets separated from her family as communications go down and she evokes an unhealthy kind of interest in a demon man who comes from the same realm as the hounds. Also, she gets constantly almost eaten by either hounds or Infected (aka zombies). The unhealthy interest includes constant boob grabbing, crotch grabbing, shameless ogling intruding on personal actions suchs as taking a piss. In fact, I felt like the book revolved around Mya having to pee/actually peeing and Drav intruding on her privacy.

Apparently, mr. Demon man (who is called Drav, by the way) who starts off as nothing more than a cave man, has never seen a woman before in his life. He doesn't speak English either, and grunts as a way of communication. By the end of the book, he has learnt to speak English eloquently as well as abandon his cave man ways and what to do with a cock and a vagina.

Drav and others of his kind learn English in a total credible way: once they hear a word, they know what it means and how to use it. Done. Simple as that. Note the sarcasm.

The heroine Mya isn't the brightest bulb in the box. Tbh, she shouldn't survive the apocalypse. Either way, Drav protects his pussy like the caveman he is while she searches for her family. At some point (and about five stupid notes from her family later) I felt like I was in a video game with a linear storyline where you just constantly find clues on where to go next. Only it's shoved in your face instead of actually solving the puzzle. Wait. Was there even a storyline?

Honestly, I felt like this story was lacking a lot in terms of plot development, character development, world building and credibility. A shame, because the premise was original and was promising. The execution not so much.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! I won a copy of this book in a giveaway, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!

This is the first book in this series, and my first time reading anything by M.J. or Becca. I do own several of Melissa’s books, and I just bought one of Becca’s because I loved this book so much! This book was an unexpected delight to read! I should warn you though that it ends in a cliffhanger way which is killing me because I want more and to know what happens next. I’d say this classifies as a New Adult as the main character Mya is in college. There is lots of violence not making it appropriate from younger readers.

When I started reading this book, I never read the blurb. Sometimes, I like to be surprised, and I definitely was because I didn’t know this was a post-apocalyptic zombie type of book. The book starts with Mya and her roommate studying in their dorm room, but they are watching the news. I was pulled into the story and didn’t even realize it. Mya and Drav are quite the pair, and Drav is very protective of Mya. He is learning English as Mya talks to him. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll just tell you that this book is amazing and has tons of action.

I highly recommend this book to any reader who like post-apocalyptic books of survival mixed with fantasy and zombies, and if cliffhangers both you, you may want to wait until the series finishes and read them at that time. I hate waiting, but I will because this book was fantastic! For now, I’m not so patiently waiting for the next book!

‘He reached forward with his free hand, and I put my arm up, trying to protect my neck.
His palm covered my right boob, and he gave it another tentative squeeze. I lowered my arm in shock and watched him pull back once more. His gaze zeroed in on my left side.
“Hell no.” I said, renewing my struggles.’

‘The way he reached around me to grab the back of my head made my heart hammer. I closed my eyes, waiting for the end. Instead his forehead pressed against mine and his breath fanned my face.’

‘“You are the only thing I like about this world,” he said.’

Well I enjoyed that way more than I thought I would, so much so that I finished in 1 day and I am going to start reading book 2 right away.

I am completely drawn into this world that the author created. This book is good without all the steamy scenes. I am curious to know who Drav is and where him and his people come from. Also, did they create the issue with what is going on or are they two separate issues?

Will Mya and Drav become a couple? So many questions and I need these answers.

For lovers of the paranormal who want a switch from vampires, witches and shifters give this a try.

Well this is the first part in what appears to be a trilogy. I was quite intrigued by the synopsis and was looking for something with an urban fantasy type feel. This does take a dystopian slant although this story seems to chart the beginning of what happens to the humans when unnatural creatures appear bringing a plague that will obviously change the world forever.
Our heroine is Mya a student who suddenly finds her life spiralling out of control as strange earthquakes seem to release what I can only describe as hellhounds with very infectious bites. On the run avoiding both hounds and those infected Mya meets a grey shadowy male who just won’t let her go. Mya is determined to get across town to her family and somehow gets Drav this insanely curious creature to agree to go with her. Although if I’m honest I don’t think there’s anyway that Drak would ever let Mya go.
Ok I get that this seems to be trying to encourage readers to think of Hell dimensions but honestly Drak felt alien rather than evil. For a start he looks a little like I imagine a gargoyle and secondly he only has to hear a word once to know and fully understand it so suspend all disbelief and go with the flow. Mya does appear immature at times if I’m brutal but I couldn’t fault her desire to be reunited with her family although I have to point out it felt like an endless and pretty fruitless chase.
There’s an innocence to Drak that really worked and when he picks up an iPod it’s very funny if honest but most of all his journey from monosyllabic to extremely protective is what made this story so interesting.
A little clunky in places and I wasn’t really that fond of Mya but I did find myself eagerly turning the pages so I guess that says I did enjoy this take on a zombie apocalypse.
As I write this is currently free on kindle

OMG! I was up all night till morning reading this book. It's rare that I do this - it means that this book's just amazing.

I wanted to share my thoughts before going on to book 2. This book is just so fricking good - I'll definitely re-read.

Spoilers!

Onwards... SO the starting was a bit shaky but it quickly transitioned to a smooth read. I'm not so keen on Mya's decision on leaving her roommate and following complete strangers. I thought this was a bit stupid and dumb. But then she met Dravvvvvvv. *Swooning* A big hefty demon with glowing green eyes. Not gonna lie, it was scary that he kills with such ease. But he is such a softy when it comes to Mya. Scoreeee! I like that the authors made his character to be scary and dangerous but at the same time, sweet and gentle.

The romance in this read is just right. It has the right amount of build-up. I appreciate when romance takes time to bloom between characters especially for sexy romance books. I like that the attraction between Mya and Drav is there but not too much there - Get what I'm saying? I especially like that his innocent learning about earth and Mya is way adorable. The "boobs" and "no penis" had me cracking. So Good!

Please read - this book took the cake. Enough of this chit-chat! now reading book 2!

The first person narrative didn't help the story. You need a different writing voice from this or maybe it simply wasn't good enough.

It's a short novelette (I doubt it's 200 pages long as GR says as it took me less than 2 hours to read it), but mostly it's part of a serial, so you need to buy 3 'books' to get a story.
Not my cup of tea. But not a book I would trash-bin tag (I didn't hate it)

Part one is free so you can decide whether you want to read it.

You know those candy post apocalyptic romance stories where humanity is dying left and right, but our heroine catches the eye of a super powerful man who kidnaps her and gets her through it? And they slowly fall in love?

From Angelfall by Susan Ee to Pestilence by Laura Thalassa. It's a popular theme for a reason and I'm not above the lure, but I never have super high expectations going into them.

This one though, never failed me once. Demon Ember and it's 2 sequels can be read as one big novel imo and they make for one entertaining story. It's not overly complex or horrific but it's good if you read these books for the romance.

~ This is a review of the first 3 books in the Resurrection Chronicles: Demon Ember, Demon Flames and Demon Ash ~

It isn't just Mya's world that's falling, it's everyone's. The arrival of the seemingly unkillable red-eyed hounds whose bite turns people into mindless zombies has driven humanity into a post apocalyptic world. No one is safe, especially in the dark. Mya is doing her best to survive and reach Oklahoma city and her family when a new monster attacks her and her companions. He looks like a man...if a human man had grey skin, pointed ears, sharp teeth and was 7ft tall. But, he spares Mya's life and now seems content to follow her and protect her from the dangers of this new post-apocalyptic world.

It may seem like I am being lazy reviewing 3 books in 1 review; however, each book continues seamlessly on from where the previous one ended. In fact, when I think about it, I can't really remember which events happen in each book it's all merged together as we watch the post apocalyptic paranormal romance love story unfold between Mya and Drav. Another reason why they merged together? I couldn't put them down. As soon as I finished one I was straight on to Amazon getting the next one. I was addicted.

For anyone who is a fan of Sandra Neeley's Whispers from the Bayou series or Ruby Dixon's Ice Planet Barbarians series (which FYI makes a cameo in these books!) then I know you will love these. They have the same type of hero; barbarian in appearance, a little primitive and strangely innocent with a heart like a marshmallow - all soft and sweet. Basically, my favourite kind of hero. Which, is why I loved Drav, but I warn you to be patient with some of his more... violent actions -never against the heroine - won't make sense until you are further along.

Mya is a college student who gets chucked into the deep end. Although I liked her, it did take me a while to warm to her. I think I was too busy swooning over Drav.  However, this is one of the reasons that although this is a recommended read, that I didn't rate it a 4 or 5 stars. I have to fall in love with both the hero and heroine for it to rate that highly. But, I did love Drav and the idea behind this series. These books set up a dangerous new world where if the zombies don't get you, the hellhounds will. And, if you survive that you then need to be wary of the other surviving humans as well. It's an exciting read.

This is a great start to this paranormal romance series and I am dying to get my hands on the next book.

I didn't know that I needed a scene in my life in which a fey himbo learns the english language through audiobooks by Ruby Dixon which are in turn books about blue alien himbos, but now that I've got it, I have zero regrets.

Funny how a few years can make you rethink your favorite books.

This has been on my favorites shelf for years and I've revisited it many times. It's always going to be cute, and will have a special place in my heart. But good grief, once I got over my book crush - Mya is annoying, selfish, and entitled.

Originally, I loved her drive to do what's right and her believably stupid choices. But now I just wish she'd realize her world ended and she needs to adapt.

Drav... the complex culture that defines him is overshadowed by a lot of sloppy writing. But the enemies to friends - slow burn relationship between him and his annoying human is still cute. 🥰

Demon Ember, part one of the Resurrection Chronicles series, is one hot mess. It's got a cliffhanger ending, which I don't really mind. It's got a post-apocalyptic setting, which should be righteous. End of days, demon dogs appearing on Mya's college campus, biting and infecting humans who then turn into zombies. SHTF-ing. All of this is cool.

And then the "gray man" enters the picture. He's obviously the love interest, due to his large muscles, his tendency to rip everyone's heads off (literally), and showing Mya his penis the first chance he gets. And all he can seem to say is Boobs.

All of this doesn't really bother me. Strange, I know. What bothered me were the descriptions of his eyes - large, watery eyes with reptilian slits. Green eyes. Oh my dear lord.

I went straight to the Deep Ones and Innsmouth. Froggy faces of the Marsh family and other denizens of the deep.

And so try as I might, I couldn't find a love connection between our hapless human heroine and Frog Boy, even if he is gray and muscled and handles his penis efficiently.

Amazing! I loved this book. I didn't know what to expect when I first started reading it, but I was drawn in pretty quickly. It all starts with earthquakes. Mya is a young woman who is at college. There's a earthquake in Germany and eerie videoclips start showing up on social medias. And then the earth tremors start. Ok so I'm not going to say anymore about the story now. Just that it's really really good.

Even though I didn't love this book, I still want to continue the series.

The first 20ish% of this story was so dark and gritty. I was hooked! Once we meet Drav, we get whiplash. I thought the scenes between Mya and Drav were almost silly. Their interactions didn't blend with the setting of the story. When they were on the move and trying to survive, it felt like a darker survival story. But when they were resting and interacting together, it was like a different story. I do want to see how Mya and Drav end up and learn more about Drav's homeland. We get pieces of it but it left me with more questions than answers.

This book does not have any explicit scenes, but it setting them up for the next books.

The world is hit with hellhounds, zombies and gray skinned manlike creatures. Mya is at college when the chaos erupts. The story is about her journey in trying to reunite with her family. Along the way, she encounters Drav, one of the manlike creatures. He takes a liking to her along with keeping her travels safe.

I knew with this being a long series, each book would bring us along a portion of events happening and end with a cliff hanger. But I did find how the manlike creatures acted toward Mya a bit weird for my liking. They are not use to females and fight to the death for their 'woman'. It felt we were back dealing with caveman and immature boys who are "I'll show you mine, if your show me yours".

Wow. This book. This story. This world pulled me in straight away. It starts quite innocently with tremors in another country and college girl being interested in them. Nothing unusual right? Until the tremors start to happen in US too. And after the tremors weird big dogs start to appear.

By chapter three I had goosebumps. It was getting that good already.

Mya is a normal college student, fighting her way through finals and missing her family. I loved her relationship with her brother. From the beginning you can tell they are close. #Freaksbyblood

I also really liked her way of thinking. She wanted to panic but was pushing it down, but at the same time wasn't a badass heroine that suddenly knew how to shoot and kill. She was more real.

Ms Haag created a masterpiece of an apocalyptic world. Dog like creatures spreading infection that makes people attack healthy. And HIM. Can you have a crush on a creature not from your normal world? That is not really handsome or hot but has that Something? Well I guess you can because I'm crushing real hard in him.

I cannot wait for the next part. I really want more. Like now please?

Definitely a 5 star read!
