He is a mangaka from Tokyo, Japan. He debuted in October 2001 with Nandodemo Roku Gatsu Jū San Hi, and also wrote for the magazine Square Freeze and Love Love Santa, published in November 2001 and in February 2002 respectively. DANG SURE I WAS HORRIFIED, THE EXACT SAME EXPRESSION ON GEN'S FACE WHEN I SAW RYUSUI'S PETRIFIED FACE IN CLOSE-UP GOSH I ALMOST SHIT MYSELF. YOU'D GIVE ME A HEART ATTACK! HAHAHA BTW I'M SO EXCITED TO SEE A KOHAKU MAKE-OVER! EXCITED FOR THE NEXT VOLUME!
What a fantastic volume! We have them prepare the ship Perseus that will travel through the sea and take them to their location and it takes them a year and they are able to do it and the people they take is interesting, its the last time we see all of them together and after that we have Senku and Ryusui travel the seas and looking for the treasure island where they will find Platinum from the space ship "Soyuz" and this was my favorite part all along, them travelling and coming here! It just feels so good and after that we have Senku and co arriving here and they explore the WHY-MAN only to find the others in the ship have been petrified, everyone is shocked and they explore more of the island and meet this beautiful girl named: AMARYLLIS and its a massive moment in the book and we finally learn how the petrification takes place and who is this master?! And Kohaku makeover next! Its a great one and reveals so much as answers to the mysterious petrification beam may come soon and also Senku is getting new challenges now, on the brink of discovering some new phenomenon and maybe face off against his greatest villain! The art by Bocihi is gorgeous, everyone looks so cool!
Alright guys, I'm going to go on a pretty long rant regarding my issues with the female characters in this series, so if you want to my thoughts regarding this outside of that, here's the cliffnotes version: -It was fine. Not bad, not amazing, just fine. The photo journal time skip was really cool and it was nice seeing what went down during that year without being bogged down with unnecessary detail. Artwork/art style was strong, loved the shading in the photo journal chapter, really made it stand out. That's about it.
If you don't want to read this rant (which I don't blame you if you don't) skip to the final paragraph for my closing thoughts on this volume. Okay? Okay, here we go!
So, I had an epiphany after finishing this volume: none of the female characters are that interesting/memorable. *cue gasps, jaws dropping, and angry, disapproving murmurs*. I want to make it clear before I continue that I'm not saying these characters are badly written characters, but that they aren't that interesting in grand scheme of the series and, most importantly, don't hold up to other female Shounen Jump protagonists.
I have been consuming Shounen Jump entertainment since I was kid and even back then I would hear people lamenting how there weren't any great female characters that they could relate to. My counter argument at the time was, why do you have to be the same gender to relate to someone? Granted now that I'm older I understand the issue with my counter argument, but quite frankly there were still some badass women/girls in Shounen Jump titles. Yes, they didn't as much screen time as the boys/men, but are you really going to sit there and say Bulma wasn't fucking fearless or how unflappable and badass Genkai was? It's not there weren't any, they just didn't get as much screen time. And it's only gotten better over time; My Hero Academia has an abundance of strong, fierce ladies, The Promised Neverland has a smart, strong, and empathetic leading lady, and Demon Slayer has four AWESOME badass women that are strong and complex. What I'm getting at here is that there have always been great female characters past and present, so there's really no excuse as to why Dr. Stone's ladies are so woefully underdeveloped and uninteresting.
Again, I want to reiterate that these characters aren't poorly written, trust me I've read enough manga to spot those. My main problem is that compared to other Shounen Jump titles Dr. Stone probably has the weakest set of female characters. Kohaku is probably the most developed, but even then she's just physically strong, loves her sister, acts on instinct, and is willing to go along with whatever science-y stuff Senku wants to do. This isn't bad, it's just not interesting or engaging. If this was a slice of life series about rebuilding civilization than I could let this pass, but this is an action/adventure series with some slice of life elements woven in. And considering she was introduced in the second volume and this is all that there is to her character? That's weak, ESPECIALLY considering that I just finished reading the 14th volume of Demon Slayer today which gave backstory to one of only four female characters AND managed to break down gender stereotypes while maintaining her bubbly and energetic personality. Btw, she was introduced in the 6TH VOLUME and has only been present in the last THREE VOLUMES and she's easily a better written character than Kohaku. Speaking of gender stereotypes...
What prompted this rant was the final chapter of this volume. In it, we learn that the master of this village holds a "harem selection process" (because OF COURSE he does, he's a MAN) and one of the villagers wants to use it to sneak in and grab an important item. She isn't a fighter though, so it's decided that Kohaku should participate in the process too, but oh WAIT! The master only likes CUTE girls, and Kohaku's too tomboyish to be labelled CUTE, RIGHT?!
*deep breath* first of all, the current year in the story is 5741. Are you ACTUALLY TELLING ME that it's been 3,721 years since humanity was petrified and WE STILL HAVE FUCKING GENDER STEREOTYPES?! WHY??????? WHY IS THIS STILL A THING?! Were none of the people who crashed into that island progressive at ALL and just passed down their fucking shitty gender stereotypes for over 3,700 years?! Also, it is FUCKING 2020, WHY are we still using the "tomboy is forced to be traditionally feminine" trope?! It is so FUCKING outdated, I couldn't believe we're really going this route in terms of the story. And finally, why does the "master" of the village HAVE to have a harem?! WHY. THE FUCK. IS THAT NECESSARY?! He's already petrifying anyone who opposes him, which is scary enough, why add the harem bit? Because he's a man? Well, of course! Because gender stereotypes go both ways, am I right?! *sigh* whatever, I'm so done with this...
I'm honestly feeling really mixed about the series at this point. On the one hand, I do really like the story and I'm curious to see where it goes, but I'm not pleased with this "make a tomboy traditionally feminine to infiltrate a man's harem" thing and have issues with some of the characters. I've already pre-ordered volume 13, so we'll see where the story goes. I swear though, if they take up the whole FUCKING volume with this harem infiltration bullshit, I'm gonna be so pissed...
The Perseus is one hell of a ship, if i say so myself and the name suits it perfectly. The villagers of Treasure Island looks even more primitive than the folks of Ishigami Village. New characters are incorporated into the story but i'm not feeling any connection yet. Senku's most of the science team got petrified again. Man, that petrification beam is one baaaad invention!

I used to really love this series but this volume was extremely difficult to finish, the new characters it introduced are annoying or have no unique personality. Some plot points don’t make any sense at all
Really interested in where this one goes from here, really did not expect to get to the petrifaction beam so quickly. Also like that little bit about Ryusui kicking Suika out of harms way, he’s a good man.
Ryusui's past is revealed. Ruri talks about the 100 Tales finally. We learn many interesting things from the tales one of them being the existence of human society other than the Ishigami Village. This is why the crew decides to go to that place they call Treasure Island but something horrible happens. This is also the first time we are seeing the petrification device. It was a good chapter overall but I am not a super fan of this arc in general. I also see someone complaining about the female characters and I completely agree because most of the female characters are pretty generic and easily forgettable whereas you have great characters like Senku, Tsukasa, Chrome and Gen.

Autor ponadto nadal doskonale balansuje tutaj pomiędzy wątkami naukowymi/edukacyjnymi (wynalazki i pomysły Senku) a sferą fantazji (petryfikacja i liczne inne tajemnice).
Still no conflict of any significance. Rather a series of irrelevant science info-dumps to which the characters respond by mindlessly cheerleading. Any “problems” that crop up are effortlessly solved with, you guessed it, science.
There’s no time spent on character development and no tension. Some very mild mysteries such as where’s the treasure island, what do the 100 stories have to do with this? But, don’t worry, some new guy will show up and conveniently answer everything.
Most of the crew gets petrified at one point, but, how convenient, this island contains the platinum needed to reverse petrification. So, I think the author has given up on trying to create a story with suspense and instead has decided to make an educational brochure extolling the virtues of science.
However, since the science imparted consists of nothing more than what you might find skimming a Wikipedia article for two seconds I think it fails at that too.
The artist also seems to be losing interest, can’t blame him, and the book has a phoned-in feel. I’m surprised it lasted another 14 volumes.

Sometimes when it comes to old-timey sailing vessels, but you come from a modern time, it's always fascinating to see what you stock the thing full of. And the Perseus is a HELLUVA ship! It's interesting that they name it after the slayer of Medusa, since these primitives would definitely not know a thing about ancient Greek mythology, but it's fitting since they're on a quest to beat the petrifying force. ... ALSO SHONEN HERO ASEXUAL TENDENCIES COME IN CLUTCH AGAIN! A native beauty can flaunt her flirts all she wants, will not work for a man of science...and has no sex drive.
Science village creates a sea worthy sailing vessel named Perseus. The Perseus sets sail with most of the village, their first destination is a treasure island. Trouble comes when everyone on the ship is petrified. Senku and the others search Treasure Island for signs of life and someone who might be responsible. They find Amaryllis and her three suitors, she knows the secrets to the petrification beam and wants to team up with Senku and the others to beat the master. They come up with a plan to have Kohaku enter the masters harem but first they must make her cute.

This volume took me utterly by surprise, I must say. I have issues with the character development in this series in general, so I won't comment on the new addition here, but the journey away from Japan definitely sets the scene for some real intrigue. For some reason, even after encountering the "WHYs" in the previous volume, I didn't feel as though the characters were actually in danger. Thanks to this volume, I do. Seems as though there's a real threat hanging over their heads, now; one much more sinister than Tsukasa.
TL.DR, the plot still plays around the predictable but the story still keeps its charm.
The arc of Treasure Island starts with a baffling twist, as we, the readers, ponder old and new questions: What is the secret of petrification? How did the Master obtain such power? Who is Why-man?
This volume includes one of the sweetest chapters in the series. I was cured by the Kingdom of Science daily photo record.
P.S. Bochi-san's art never dissapoints. That Perseus full spread was breathtaking! Looking for a fully-colored canvas panel...
4.25 *Review of Volumes 10-12* All the science stuff! I can't believe they just now started agriculture. And they have a cool ship! I also take back the stuff about the humor being subpar. The new ship captain starting a monopoly is funniest thing ever! As for the mystery behind the petrification, I can't say I do have high hopes for character development, but the science never fails to disappoint!
I don't think Boichi has ever met a woman, the proportion of bodies and faces are painful. This volume has us meet a character with no spine! But their entire character is all about being really pretty!
This volume has the group set off on an adventure. Who gets to go on the adventure? The named characters, of course. Makes sense! Yeah, sure, we get some more info on whatever the stone things are but... why is the plot all about sexifying characters so they can join a harem?
Seeing Senku return to the island his Father lived was really cool and we get several really cool bombshells like learning that Ishigami Village is not the only place humans are living in as the island also has inhabitants and that they indeed do know the secret of Petrification or at least a little bit of it. The new characters so far have not had a chance to show off their personalities but they at least look interesting.
The main reason I keep reading this series is the set of rather unique characters (for a shounen manga, that is). Especially morally ambiguous people like Gen and Ryusui are rare and a delight to see interact with the rest of the cast. The newcomers that get gradually introduced are also fresh and keep the story exciting.
I had been wondering if there were other descendants from the Soyuz people. It still seems insane that they got their numbers that high without severe consequences of inbreeding. I had hoped that in a world of science they would also consider that biological fact.

*3.5. Another interesting volume. I wasn’t expecting the voyage route but I’m intrigued as to how this storyline will pan out. Especially with the whole petrifaction thing going on I wonder what actually is the source of that and who started it. Overall another good volume.
