Hayden Family #2

The Maverick

Rate this book
I'm sure you’ve heard about me.
The middle Hayden brother, the one whose wife ran off.
I knew America's sweetheart was coming to our small town to film her latest movie, but I didn't expect to be tasked with showing her how a ranch operates.
Tenley is unexpectedly funny, and complicated. I’m a single dad and fearful of the way she makes my heart beat double-time.
Just when I think falling for Tenley might be a real possibility, things take an unforeseen turn. Everyone assumes I’ll take my licks the way I always have.
Not this time.
Maybe I am the nice, dependable brother.
But I’m also a Hayden, born and bred.
And this bull has horns.

The Patriot(#1) - 4 stars
The Maverick(#2) - 4.25 stars
The Outlaw(#3) - tbr/coming out September 2021
The Calamity(#4) - tbr

Two books in & the Hayden family series is definitely heading in the right direction, just getting better with each one. The Patriot (the oldest Hayden, Wes’s book/book one) left me much more curious about Wyatt, Wes’s youngest brother, tbh than Warner, the middle Hayden brother. I guess inadvertently that kinda lowered my expectations for The Maverick. Along with two of the tropes mentioned in the synopsis & the epilogue of the previous book. Movie star seldom works for me & single parent is so popular that it can feel like a dime a dozen pretty easily. The Maverick was more than the basic version of either trope (especially the single parent) & then some.

Warner - Yes, it was a romance above all, but I think I actually enjoyed Warner’s journey more to finding his own acceptance of what his life has become & also letting go of the past he thought was his forever. Then allowing himself to open up & truly move on. Sure, Warner Hayden comes all rolled in one sexy, swoony cowboy package 😍, but he is also very much a loyal, decent, loving man & a good father at the end of the day. It was rather refreshing he wasn’t just over his previous marriage because Tenley entered his life. He needed time & real closure.

Tenley - I liked her pretty much all along - she’s a kind, fun, sassy heroine with a good heart -. I especially appreciated she had some patience with Warner & the feelings he was still working through, despite the apparent mutual attraction brewing between them. Nonetheless, I still felt like a little something was missing, so I didn’t totally connect with her until she confessed a secret to Warner. It definitely clicked a piece of her in place why she’s a pleaser when it comes to her family back home before she came to the Hayden ranch.

Almost all of Warner & Tenley’s romance was a pleasure to read. Their chemistry was a good blend of tender, fun & sexy. I loved the horse riding lessons scenes. I’m glad JM took advantage of the swoony moments between them there (& other places too, but that was definitely one of my favorites).

The Maverick was cruising pretty easily to 4.5 stars rating, but there was a small snag near the end. I had a hunch it was going to be a bait & switch. However, as this being only my 2nd JM book, I couldn’t say for sure. Thankfully, I was correct but had I not, it would’ve completely soured me towards one of them. By no means was the story ruined, but I just didn’t enjoy the feeling of hoping for the plot not to go there for a handful of pages 🤷‍♀️.

Heads up for fellow steamy readers:

The dynamics between the Hayden brothers & the women in their lives interacting has become one of my favorite things about the series along with the ranch lifestyle. Plus the moments with their grandpa. Honestly, I wish there had been another brother or two, so there would be more moments between them & more time with the Hayden’s. Ugggh! I’m so curious to unravel the mystery of Wyatt in his book, The Outlaw, in September! There’s a preview at the end of this one, but I decided to go in blind, cause I think it might make my curiosity worse with an extended teaser.

”The timing is wrong. The circumstances are heavy. A Greek tragedy, star-crossed lovers doomed from the beginning. I’ve never considered myself a martyr, but maybe that’s because I’ve never been in a position like this.”

This book sksksks. This was my first book by this author and certainly won’t be my last! When, I read the blurb, i was like “yes!” and then when I received an arc i went like double “yes!”.
I don’t think I’ve read a trope like this- where the h is famous and H is just a cowboy. I liked that.

”It’s in this moment that I realize I’m in danger. Warner is too good to be true. He must be an apparition, a mirage, a delusion. I’m torn between wanting to run from these feelings, and accepting everything Warner has to offer, soaking it all up like the parched desert I drove through to get to this town.”

Warner was such a sweet guy. I loved him so much. I loved that we saw his conflict with his emotions and we saw his bond with his family.

”I smile. “Yeah, she’s nice, Gramps.” Nice. Hah. How about funny, beautiful, interesting, and hardworking, to name a few?”

Tenley was a sweetheart. One would never believe she’s an actor. She is such a kind, down to earth kinda woman.

What i believed didn’t sit well with me was that I wanted more scenes with the kids. I wanted to see them with Tenley which we didn’t get much. There also should’ve been a scene where the person who is wrong should pay for his sins cause the fact that tenley forgave her friend too quickly didn’t sit well with me.

Overall, I liked this book and I’m excited to read the next one of Wyatt with Jo, may I say? I hope its Jo!! 🤞🏻

This was my second book by this author and it was good.

Tenley is a famous movie star and she has just been dumped by her live in boyfriend. And not in a good way she had to find out in the gossip rags. Now she is on her way to Sierra Grande for a new movie. And this one has to be a success as her parents are counting on her to bring in the money 😬 And this is how she meets Warner Hayden. On her way to her new home she gets stuck along the road and Warner comes to her rescue.

Warner Hayden had the perfect life. He had a wife and two kids and working on a big ranch. Then his wife left him and his kids for two years and now she's back and she wants a divorce. His life feels like it has no direction. His family is falling apart and his working on a ranch that is not his first love. And he definitely doesn't want to be attracted to the sexy women next to the road.

When things get complicated Tenley moves into a cabin on the Hayden ranch and she and Hayden can't stop their attraction for each other. But will Hayden be able to cope with Tenley's life of being in the limelight and especially when secrets are revealed. As well is will Hayden be able to give Tenley what she wants... A family😔

This was a fairly easy story to read. Not that much drama. Thought there would be with an ex wife but not actually. Tenley was a sweetheart and Hayden was a sexy cowboy. Both characters have their own baggage but hopefully love will conquer all🤞I am excited to read Wyatt's story, he seemed like his going to be a handful😁

Another amazing book by Jennifer and for the Hayden family series.

This one had so many tropes that I absolutely love: single dad, celebrity, and small town .. sign me up!

I really enjoyed the mental health component in this one and how the main characters seemed to always find their way back to each other.

There were so many sweet moments, the spice was great, and it even had some found family vibes to tie it all together.

You get:
• Contemporary Romance
• Spicy
• Small Town
• Single Dad
• Celebrity
• Don't Trust Anyone
• Forced Proximity

I strongly recommend this one! Available on KU, ebook, paperback, and audiobook.

Warner's wife left him and he's just now getting papers. He's going to have to get used to life as a divorced single father working on his family's ranch, even though that ranch work isn't really what he wants to be doing. And then a gorgeous Hollywood superstar happens to him. Tenley needs help learning ranch work for her new movie. Who better to teach her than a real cowboy like Warner? But when it becomes more than him teaching her, will he be able to offer her everything she wants, she deserves? Love? Marriage? Babies? If he can't (won't), Tenley's not sure she can stick around.

Tenley isn't about to go looking for love since her ex cheated on her. But when she meets a gorgeous cowboy and starts to see what a life away from Hollywood could be like, suddenly things start looking differently for her. But do she and Warner want the same things from life? Or is Warner still reeling too much from how much his life has imploded thanks to his ex?

The Maverick is a sweet, slow burn romance. I adored both Warner and Tenley - they're both so sweet with these big hearts. Despite her being from Hollywood, she's genuine and down to earth, which is a good thing because she's perfect for equally big-hearted Warner. I wanted to hug him and tell him everything would be OK, hug them both, actually. Their story was very slow burn, perhaps too much so, but sweet and filled with lovable, genuine characters. Now I'm really excited for Wyatt's story - more Hayden brothers on my Kindle is definitely something to look forward to.

The Maverick
is the second stand alone in Jennifer Millikan's Hayden Family series. This one is about middle Hayden brother Warner and a holly wood actress named Tenley. The two have an instant connection. However, Warner is still feeling for his new reality as a divorced dad of two and Tenley is at the point in her life where she wants the wedding and kids. With two different plans for the future Tenley doesn't have much choice but to walk away before she hurts her heart any further.

"It’s official. Warner and I were lovers in a past life. There’s no other way to explain the raw attraction I feel. "

This was a rough one on the heart. You feel so bad for Warner. He's a great dad, a loyal husband and held out hope for reconciling with his wife/childhood sweetheart. When that hope is crushed he is kind of set a drift and has trouble coping with his strong feelings for Tenley. He is a gentle heart and even though he doesn't come right out and say he loves her you know it from his words and actions. Tenley was a fantastic character! She was fun, determined, caring, and confident. I loved how she didn't tip toe around her feelings concerning Warner, she is up front about them. She definitely took charge of their physical relationship but did it in a way that took Warner's situation into consideration. You could feel the love between them from the pages when they take the intimate step .

"No kiss has ever felt so good, so right, so earth shattering. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, I will never be the same after this."

Overall, The Maverick is another wonderful romance from author Jennifer Millikin, and I'm excited for the next brothers' story!

Tenley is in Arizona to film her last movie, hoping it is very successful so she can provide some income for her parents. Warner has finally signed divorce papers and is coming to terms with the fact that his relationship is really over. Tenley shadows Warner at his family farm and they form a friendship. They start to fall in love but Tenley is afraid that Warner won’t be able to give her what she wants down the line, a family and marriage.

So this is a single parent/celebrity romance and for the most part I enjoyed it. It was a very slow burn minus the steam, which stinks. I felt Tenley had stronger feelings than Warner, so I didn’t really buy their relationship. I also wish there were more scenes of the two of them with Warner’s kids and a resolution with the movie/Tenley’s parents. I’m also interested to go back and read about Warner’s brother in the first book. 3.5 stars

The second book in the Hayden Family series, sorry Wes, but Warner – Swoon! I devoured the book in hours, as I seem to do with all the books by this author.

Hayden is the middle brother, still figuring out the single father thing after his divorce. His priorities are the kids and the ranch.

Tenley is an actress in Hollywood, currently in the tabloids for a breakup. She has a new movie getting ready to be shot in Sierra Grande. She heads there to get away from the press. Besides, she has some ranching to learn for her movie.

When the two meet, the attraction is immediate, yet his new “normal” and her wanting to settle down do not quite mesh. There is a movie to be made, and they grow closer. Will the press go too far? Can they admit their feelings?

I love the story and the characters in this family. I am waiting for the next Hayden, patiently.

I received an advanced copy from the Author; this is my voluntary review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 STARS

I absolutely loved how sweet this book was! Warner and Tenley had a serendipitous first meeting, although some of their latter encounters weren't quite as friendly. Despite the fact that they are total opposites in the many facets of their life, their instant connection draws them to the other and makes for an all-consuming read. The Maverick by Jennifer Millikin is an EPIC read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!

This book is a lot heavier on the family advice and wisdom coming from the elders. It really helps to accomplish what was missing from book 1 for me - and that is endearing me to the Hayden family.

I also liked Tenley and Warner together better than I did Wes and Dakota. The chemistry is palpable between them from the very first time they meet.

And there are some very tender moments with Warner's little ones that grip the heart and make you smile. The way Tenley helps Payden, for instance, when she starts her period for the first time, was sweet and a great bonding moment.

I just don't know how I feel about Warner's marriage JUST being over for him. I don't know if the story is well-written enough that I believe he is able to let go of his high school sweetheart and the mother of his children that fast and fall in love with a new woman. It's evident he wants to. And I think there are times where we see Millikin trying to give him those moments of clarity - I'm just not sure the goal is accomplished.

I mean at the end of the book,

Part of the issue I think is that this book is much shorter than book 1. Time does pass in the background - we have mentions of days going by here and there. But the amount of time Warner and Tenley spend together feels short.

She's also supposedly on the ranch to start with to learn how to do cowboy stuff - and outside of ONE scene where she's sort of learning how to ride a horse, we don't see her get to LEARN anything. It's mostly just her and Warner going on dates or playing house.

Needless to say that while I enjoyed what we got - it felt very surface level. There are darker issues brought up that are never dealt with - Tenley's father's gambling addiction, the drama with her co-star selling her and Warner out to the tabloids. The panty thief that's NEVER found or "dealt with" on page. Warner's ex's mental health struggles being outted to the tabloids. There's a lot of things that get brushed by where there were opportunities for real character growth.

So while I liked Warner and Tenley together better than I did Wes and Dakota, I can't really give this book a higher rating, because of the sheer amount of missed opportunities.

eh

This book wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t my favorite. It is supposed to be a single dad book but the kids are hardly mentioned and aside from one incident the FMC does not make any bonds with his kids. Also the MMC is more worried about his ex wife and her feelings that he literally leaves when something happens to go check on his ex wife and just leaves the fmc. Again the book wasn’t bad I just felt like it was more about him dealing with getting over his ex than a love story with him and the fmc

This is my first book by the author and I'm obsessed. Honestly, this wasn't easy to read at first because of Warner's emotional baggage. But he proved to be so much more than he seemed. I loved all the characters in the book. Their family is just amazing. I really enjoyed watching Warner and Tenley's relationship grow. They are made for each other but it definitely takes a bit of time and patience. I can't wait for the next book of the series.

Warner Hayden is known as the middle Hayden brother, whose wife left him with their two kids and never came back. He’s nothing like his older brother, Wes, who is the short-tempered, new owner of the Hayden Cattle Company, nor like his younger brother, who has a wild streak and no one knows what’s going on with him. He’s a single father and the second-in-command of his family's ranching empire.

Warner’s steady and secure world is about to be shaken by the arrival of America's sweetheart, Tenley Roberts, an actress who has come to their small town to shoot her latest film. When he helped a beautiful stranger on the side of the road, driving a 1976 Bronco, he had no idea that she was Tenley. But when he found out, things changed, and he hasn't been the same since. Even though he is recently divorced and is held back by all the things he thinks he should and should not feel, Tenley is unexpectedly funny and complicated, and they're too wrapped up in each other to care.

However, things take an unexpected turn, and everyone assumes he'll take his licks the way he always has. But not this time.

“I fell asleep in the shallows, and I woke up submerged.”

As soon as I finished reading The Patriot, I knew that I wanted to continue reading this series to see what the rest of the Hayden family gets up to in their own respective stories. This book was about Warner, the middle brother, and I really loved how it panned out for him! I know that this book can technically be read as interconnected stand-alones but I definitely recommend reading The Patriot before diving into The Maverick because you'll appreciate background characters a lot more and you'll understand the family dynamics better!

I'll be honest, Warner wasn't the one that I was the most excited for and although I enjoyed myself thoroughly, Wes is still my favorite so far. Warner is a great dad and you can see that on the page and I really appreciated the fact that his kids were always a priority for him. I also really appreciated his poeticness when it came to his interactions with Tenley, definitely wasn't expecting it from him so it was a very nice surprise! I really loved the fact that as the story progresses, he comes out of his shell and learns a lot about himself and what he thinks he should want and have for himself.

Tenley and I got off to a rough start, there was an offhanded comment made in the first chapter that felt like she wasn't a girl's girl and that bummed me out but she won me over. I love the fact that she wasn't portrayed like the stereotypical actress that you can sometimes come across in romance novels. She was really fun to read about and I appreciated the fact that she was a no-BS type of person and was upfront about what she wanted and the fact that she didn't just settle for things.

It was also really fun to see all the Hayden's back together in different contexts and how they all interacted with Tenley and I also really appreciate the scene that happens at the gas station towards the end (I won't spoil anything!)

I'm really excited to continue on with the next book!

- celebrity x single dad
- cowboy romance
- small town romance
- she's taking lessons for her upcoming movie
- family secrets
- tabloid scandals

gasping wheezing screaming throwing up

Okay, well… this was slightly better than the first book. I had to lower my expectations after realizing the first one didn’t have the potential I’d hoped for, and this one at least met them a bit more. Maybe I just need to get used to this author’s writing style, because every time I settle into the pace and plot, an abrupt event drops like a bomb out of nowhere. The conclusion also wrapped up too quickly with a “just like that” ending. Still, it was enjoyable overall.

The Maverick centers on Warner Hayden, the middle brother of the Hayden family, and Tenley Roberts, a Hollywood actress trying to rebuild her life after a very public breakup. Warner, once devoted to his wife (now turn to ex) and kids, is now navigating divorce, fatherhood, and the collapse of the future he thought was certain. His journey isn’t just about falling in love again, it’s about finding closure, accepting his new reality, and allowing himself to move forward. He’s not simply swoony cowboy charm; he’s loyal, decent, and a deeply loving father.

Tenley, meanwhile, is fun, sassy, and kind-hearted, but also burdened by family expectations and the pressure of her career. Her patience with Warner’s grief and hesitation makes her a grounding presence, and her eventual confession about her own struggles adds depth to her character. She doesn’t shy away from her feelings for Warner and even takes charge of their relationship in ways that respect his situation. Together, Warner and Tenley’s romance blends tenderness, humor, and swoon-worthy chemistry. Their horse-riding lessons and quiet moments on the ranch highlight the balance of fun and intimacy between them.

While the story avoids heavy drama, surprisingly light on conflict with Warner’s ex-wife. It still delivers emotional weight through Warner’s healing arc and Tenley’s desire for family. Their baggage is real, but their connection feels genuine, making their love story both heartfelt and satisfying. That said, the plot slipped once it hit the third breakup drama. Warner went from loving and devoted to suddenly tongue‑tied and frustrating just when Tenley finally dropped the L‑word. The conclusion felt rushed after that; I wanted a bigger gesture and more moments of Tenley bonding with Warner’s kids to really seal the emotional payoff. But yeah, I guess the found‑family vibe carried enough weight to soften the flaws and keep the heart of the story intact.

Brenden Davis and Sarah Elizabeth Wallis delivered a strong performance, bouncing off each other with ease. Their rhythm carried the tension and tenderness beautifully. While their voices weren’t quite my personal preference, I admired the way they gave the story depth and emotion.

The Hayden family continues to shine with their familiar warmth and strong sense of found family. Next up is Wyatt, the youngest and most mysterious Hayden. His presence across the first two books hasn’t been explosive, but it’s intriguing enough to make me even more curious about what’s coming for him. So yeah, I’ll be running into The Outlaw like it’s hiding the chaos I’ve been craving. 💥🐎🏃🏻‍♀️

The Maverick
(Hayden Family #2)
Written by Jennifer Millikin

We get Warner Hayden in the Maverick, the brother I couldn’t really figure out in book one of this series. What I did understand was he was keeping a big secret from his kids, his family and well everyone in Sierra Grande and it was taking its toll on him. When the secrets started to surface though it began to make sense to me. I also thought this is a lot for him to have keep inside having no one to discuss his feelings with.

If you looked at Warner Hayden you saw a single father trying his best to be there for his children and to keep up his work as Wes’s right hand man at the family ranch. What he is hiding is not just what happened to his wife but who Warner Hayden really is.

Tinley Roberts has thrown out her now ex-boyfriend Trent and is heading out to Sierra Grande, Arizona, hopefully to do one last thing for her parents before she takes a break from Hollywood. She’s looking forward to being away from the lights and pressure of LA and can’t wait to arrive in a town where hopefully no one knows her.

Warner and Tinley meet on the side of the highway when her Bronco (Pearl) breaks down. With no phone service she knows a good thing when Warner stops and offers to see if he can help her. This is where it gets interesting! As Warner drives Tinley to the mechanics it’s possible that serendipity will eventually bring these two together.

When Tinley needs a safe spot and she and Warner start spending their days together it’s not surprising that they start spending nights together as well. It might be cool outdoors in the evening but Warner and Tinley warm up the inside air quite nicely! But, yes there’s always a but, with Warner’s ex-wife, his devotion to his children and the paparazzi following Tinley around now that the movie has begun shooting, will they let their fate take them on this journey or will they realize that Hollywood can ruin even the best things that happen to them.

Gossipy ladies, brothers who mean well but are a pain in the neck and a job application are just a few things readers can look forward to. Will Warner take the step to become who he has always wanted to be, will Tinley realize sometimes you just have to say yes..to the man! Grab this book and find out.

Oh, how I'm loving those sweet moments spent reading stories by this author. Every single time she has me under her spell. She has this unique writing style that I love. Her characters are memorable, flawed, and easy to relate to. Hayden's ranch has become more than an imaginary farm; it has become a very real place in my mind.

When Tenley's and Warner's worlds collide, it makes for a wild and romantic ride! Imagine a movie star stepping into the country world, only to be awestruck by a single father rancher. The passion and longing between the two of them was so riveting that I had to step away from The Maverick right after I finished reading it, just to collect my thoughts...

Impossible. I'm no poet, I stumble and fall while finding the right words, but this series deserves a round of applause. I found the story to be engaging and well written, with secondary characters worthy of their own stories. A perfect blend of steamy romance, family drama, and a hero and heroine worth rooting for!

The backdrop is as enthralling as the stories, making returning all the sweeter. I highly recommend this series to diehard romance fans, as there is plenty of emotion, tension, and obstacles for the hero and heroine to overcome in order to truly embrace each other.

Perfection!

Why is it so hard to write reviews for books I love.

It should be an absolute no-brainer but it's sooo hard. I just wanna scream AHHHHHHHHH WARNER IS PERFECT. But I don't think that would work for some of you. In The Patriot, I had so many questions about Warner. I saw him being a loving devoted father but I also saw an incredibly sad soul. The Maverick gave me the chance to see what made him who he is. I can't even imagine thinking your life is perfect than having it all slip away. He had this sense of what his life was and it was that for a while. But that's all gone now. He's picking up the pieces and hoping for the best.

Tenley, oh I liked her. She's fun despite her heart being broken recently. She's tired of living the life of a Hollywood star but with the circumstances she's in she has to continue at least with this last movie. Her family is relying on her. Thankfully she has Warner to show her the ropes on how to be a cowgirl. Its fine she's going to show him how to be vulnerable and love again.

I absolutely adored this story. Warner is perfection and he's mine. Just so we are clear.

Now The Maverick really set me up for The Outlaw. Wyatts been a question in my head since The Patriot. What is that guy even up to?!!? Could I have read the first chapter at the end of this book. Well, yes I could have but I don't do that.

Loving the Hayden family

Warner brings all the feels.

The Maverick centers around Warner (the second eldest Hayden) and Tenley (a Hollywood actress). Tenleys parents (Hollywood actors in their own right) are bankrolling what could very well be her last movie for awhile. It’s being set in Sierra Grande - Warners hometown.

Their meet cute is funny - a broken down car, an alias given, and a good bit of banter. There’s a funny moment where Warner finds out he’s been hoodwinked and it goes from there.

Why the 5 stars? It’s Warner’s vulnerability for me. He’s not just your typical cowboy, all rough and tough. He’s a single dad, trying to navigate divorce, while working the ranch and trying to find himself amongst all of it.

I also enjoyed that Tenley wasn’t your typical Hollywood character. She wasn’t afraid of hard work, she dove right into small town life. I loved her spunk.

The Maverick would have to be my favourite so far, but I have a sneaky feeling Jessie might beat them all. Next up is The Outlaw

So, first of all, Jennifer is a recent discovered author for me.
I found her through the famous TikTok she made for Our Finest Hour and I made it my mission to read all of her books.

So when I saw she had a new book coming out I immediately asked for and ARC. And *yay* I got one and it didn’t dissapoint!

Jen writes with her heart and soul even when a topic is sensitive, she still manages to build a beautiful story around it. That’s also the case with her latest book!

The situations, settings/places, and interactions are written so good that it feels like it is all real and you are actually in the book, watching from the sideline, following every move and cheering on!

The Maverick is a beautiful story and brings laughs, tears, and so much more by reading it!

Well done Jen! I can’t wait for your next release!👌🏻

Quick fun story about Tenley, an actress who comes to Sierra Grande to film a movie, and single dad Warner Hayden. They have an instant attraction, but there are things holding Warner back, being newly single dad. As he teaches Tenley how to ride a horse and responsibilities on his family’s ranch, they become closer. And even closer when she moes into one of the Hayden family cabins after an incident in town with some overbearing fans.

I loved both Tenley and Warner’s characters. This was a short enjoyable read, the 2nd in the series. Looking forward to the next book about the 3rd Hayden brother. Such a wonderful closeknit family who always looks out for each other.

Ahhh… single dad Warner! What a great story!

Tenley is fresh off a break-up that was splattered all over the tabloids and hoping to find a little refuge in the small town of Sierra Grande, Arizona while she films the movie she's starring in. Warner's life is flipped on it's side when he comes upon Tenley broken down on the side of the road and he learns he's been assigned to teach Tenley all about life on the ranch in preparation for her movie role.

I loved being back with the Hayden family and all the fun banter of the ranch life. Tenley and Warner have fantastic chemistry, and I enjoyed the progression of their relationship with all the swoon. Both Tenley and Warner carry baggage from their past, bringing the perfect balance of emotional growth in the relationship.

I love the family dynamics of a well-written single-parent story, and Warner's kids brought a special piece into the story. I have a lot of questions about the last Hayden brother, so you can bet I'll be grabbing Book 3 soon.

Romance Content: 3 Open-door scenes

Closed-door modification: ch. 19, 20, & 23

The Maverick by Jennifer Millikin is book 2 from the Hayden Family Series. I found this to be an enjoyable first read of the author. Tenley and Warner both from vastly different backgrounds are experiencing life’s changes. The changes in relationship dynamics, the breakdown of relationships and the fact that it is ok to move on are all touched on here. The H/h both find themselves doing what’s expected because they don’t want to let the important people in their life down. At what point is it ok to put yourself first and live the life you truly desire for yourself? Give “The Maverick” a read to find out. I promise you won’t regret it.

Fantastic Slow Burn Romance!!

I really enjoyed Tenley and Warner’s story. Their journey is an emotional one that is filled with uncertainties, drama, tension, passion and love. They have really great chemistry that just oozes off the pages and keeps you holding your breath for when they really explode.

Great writing, engaging storyline and fantastic swoon worthy characters. It’s a wonderful sweet romance that you don’t want to miss out on.

i looooooove a cowboy and i am recently found that i love a jm book as well! famous fmc isn’t usually for me but this was cute and fun! i love a single dad plot as well and this story was very much the aftermath and dealing with finding his life and what he wants after everything he’s had before had disappeared. and her patience? allowing him his time and space dude i love her.

i did think the pacing was a little off but that’s about it the rest was adorable.

This series is so good! The Maverick is a small town, single dad, romance. Tenley is an actress who is in town for a film. She meets Warner, a recently divorced father of two, and sparks fly immediately. But while feelings come on strong and fast, they are in different places in their lives. This book was perfect for the mood I was in. I wanted something easy and quick with little angst, and this was exactly that!

The quiet storm becomes a raging inferno. Warner and Tenley are more than a little hard to read. The baggage cart rolls both ways when it comes to emotion, yet with one spark, Milliken ignites the flames of attraction. The Maverick is a match that refuses to be extinguished. From heart to hormones it rages on until it sets the soul ablaze.

Closer to a 2 star than 3. The build was great and I was enjoying their dynamic a lot. But what was the ending?? It was so bland and lacked any substance in my opinion. Just fell really flat after the 65% mark.
