A special group of kids must save the world with — what else? — HOCKEY!
There are people out there, nasty mean greedy people, who want to rule the Earth. People such as evil scientist (and former mediocre goalie) Clarence Crosscheck. Only one thing is stopping them . . . hockey.
This hilarious new high-action series from Kevin Sylvester pits six ordinary kids with super hockey skills against the forces of evil — specifically, the nefarious wannabe genius, Clarence Crosscheck.
In The Puck Drops Here, Jenny, Benny, Mo, Starlight, DJ and Karl need to outmaneuver Crosscheck and his army of mammoth mutant ice squids before Crosscheck turns his giant freeze ray on the world. The entire planet is at risk! Get ready for high-stakes ice battles, non-stop hijinks and never-before-seen hockey action (it’s kids vs squids)!
With fast-paced text and illustrations throughout, this series will grip sports fans and funny story lovers alike. Will the kids win the day? You’ll have to read the books to find out . . .

I was anxiously awaiting the release of this book because my patrons LOVE hockey stories. I think it will have huge appeal with young readers because it's not only about a group of six friends who love to play hockey, but also an evil genius, some mutant squids who form an opposing team, and a magical blue light that gives everyone some unexpected skills on the ice. It's funny, entertaining, and also focuses on the importance of teamwork.
This is the first book in the series, and the second one comes out in November 2020. I would call it a lower MG book, and a great one for transitioning between chapter books and middle grade. The story moves along quickly, and there are illustrations throughout to break up the text that I really enjoyed. I'd recommend this book to kids who like sports book, but also ones who enjoy humor.
There are many elements of it that remind me of Mucus Mayhem by the author, so if you enjoyed it, be sure to try some of his other middle grade fiction, too.
If you live in Canada, chances are you have read a book about hockey. Perhaps it was fiction, perhaps it was non-fiction but given Canadian’s passion for the sport, there are a wealth of books on the market featuring our national pastime. So how do you make your hockey book stand out? Kevin Sylvester has the magic formula in his new series Hockey Super Six. In the fist book, The Puck Drops Here we meet the Super Six and learn their origin story. There are monsters, an evil villian and even some schoolyard bullies to round out the action in this ridiculous and engaging early middle grade book.
Fans of The Bad Guys will LOVE this story. The book is peppered with illustrations, comic breaks, large text fonts and mayhem. Just like David Walliams does with his books, Kevin has created a really accessible and engaging story, especially for any reluctant readers. He also throws in some excellent really big words to help readers expand their vocabulary. Hockey Super Six will appeal to seven year olds and 14 year olds alike. It’s an excellent book to help readers gain confidence while accessing an engaging and hilarious story.
If you are a fan of Kevin’s work or have been following him on social media you will know he is a huge sports fan. I LOVED all the sports puns and plays on words in the story. There are the Buffalo Jaybers and a robot named Ron Dell, shaped like a hockey puck, get it??
Another thing this book does right is representation. There are many people playing the game of hockey in many different ways in Canada. Kevin included a diverse group of friends as the Super Six, including disabled character who uses a sledge while playing hockey. Celebrating the different ways we play this game is so important for young readers to see.
Looking forward to getting my hands on book two On Thin Ice!
If books were fireworks, this series would suffice for a entire holiday weekend. It's got the energy of many firecrackers, and is just the ticket for hyper young hockey fans with vivid imaginations and no interest in sitting still. A cross between a novel and graphic novel, The Puck Drops Here uses CAPITAL LETTERS and boldface type to insert exuberance into the text. Not that the book needs any more excitement than the story line already provides. In fact, if readers received one penny for every exclamation mark in the book, they'd be pretty well off by THE END. It features six diverse hockey players (including one in a wheelchair) facing off with giant angry ice squids on a rink in a TOP SECRET underground bunker. The squids, of course, are controlled by an evil scientist who is a threat to global peace. But the stakes are even higher than that: If the kids win, the squids get put back in cages. If the children lose, the squids get to eat them. Super powers are involved. And naturally, there's also a puck robot involved in this wacky, goofy, crazy, fast-paced story. Better yet, there's a sequel. What, your juvenile hockey nut doesn't like to read books? Wrong. This series will turn anyone around.
Rink 53: It was normally covered in ice. But today, it was filled with water. Crosscheck had turned off the refrigeration and let the ice melt. WHY? He had a WICKED PLAN to refreeze the rink…But not just the rink. So. Much. More. Because – “Once I fire this ray the water will refreeze. BUT it won’t stop there. That super-frozen water will then free everything it touches, and so on and so on... It will tear across the globe, turning the entire Earth into one block of ice. HaHaHaHaHaHa!!!!!
This is a cat read with lists of fun graphics throughout. The plot is a bit silly for middle grades, but there were a few laugh-out-loud moments. Although it looks like a sports book it is more of a sci-fi, sports, humor mix.
