This would be a gem of a book of only the recipes made sense!
I'm a Scottish girl and some 9f the recipes were a revelation to me, I had heard of some and others were a first for me. Either way, it was interesting to see the old style traditional methods of many meals that have been adapted through the generations in subtle ways.
The reason I have given 2 stars is that this book could have easily been 5 stars, however due to careless editing many if the recipes make no sense. Ingredients change from being lamb to beef half way through, steps are out of sync, out of order or a complete mystery. Some steps seam to be missed out completely.
The overall affect leaves you baffled to say the least.
In addition to this, if your not Scottish or familiar with old Scottish words you may struggle to understand the very basic descriptors given to each recipe. A bit more information and explanation would have made this a lot more accessible.
The Ultimate Scottish Cookbook: Recipes as Fierce as a Scottish Clan by Dennis Carter Book starts out with table of contents where recipes are broken up into meals and food categories. Intro discusses the cuisine of the area. Each recipe starts with a title and medium or full size color photo, servings and summary of the dish. Cook time, servings and List of ingredients and you should be able to substitute for your healthier dietary needs: low fat, low sodium, low sugar and fresh vs canned items. Some contain a lot of items, be sure ot have them all first. Directions are given and there is NO nutritional information. Recipes do NOT always start at the top of a new page. Carrot soup sounds great and I have all the vegetables. There are so many I want to try. Toffee would make a good snack for our hiking trips, think i would want to use dark chocolate. Such good choices in this book.
Some of the ingredients to make these foods could be difficult to acquire. However, the more common recipes are going to undergo my mastery to re create the types of food I commonly ate in Scotland and Wales. I can’t wait to start surprising my grandkids with these new tastes.
After studying the recipes and then comparing to the pictures something was definitely missing in the texts. Some recipes can’t possibly work with provided instructions, others seem incomplete.
