Ice Cream Man (Single Issues)

Ice Cream Man Presents: Quarantine Comix Special #1

Rate this book
In the early days of the pandemic, the team behind ICE CREAM MAN launched an online-only series of mini-comics set in the ICM universe. The project was called, predictably, QUARANTINE COMIX. These strange little ditties were meant to tide folks over while the industry was on pause—and also raise money for struggling comic shops, with 50 percent of all proceeds donated to Comicbook United Fund/BINC.

Collected are all six issues of QUARANTINE COMIX, featuring brand-new cover art and bonus stories by guest creators.

And, as before, 50 percent of Image's creator profits will go to Comicbook United to help stores get back on their feet—because comic shops are sweet.

Awesome compliation of a bunch of Ice Cream Man short stories, some done by the main creative team and others by an assortment of guest creators.

The first 6 stories in here are by the main Ice Cream Man team of W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, Chris O’Halloran, and Good Old Neon, while the last 4 are all the guest stories done by a variety of high profile comic artists and writers.

This is the first time we’ve gotten someone besides W. Maxwell Prince writing stories in the ICM, and it’s dope as fuck. Recommended for any Ice Cream Man fans. I won’t give a plot summary like I normally do for these reviews, just because they are so short that I can’t without spoiling some key points, but I will talk about the ones I liked. Individual reviews found below:

Quarantine Comix by W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, Chris O’Halloran, and Good Old Neon

I Am What I Am (A Sonnet) ☆ ☆

True Original ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Adam & Eve story with an Ice Cream Man spin.

Convention of Mikes ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

One of the best and most hopeful stories in the whole ICM run. That final panel was the best.

Secret Origins: Pinky Ring ☆ ☆ ☆ 1/2

Apparently this ties into Chapter 17, so I’ll probably appreciate it more once I’ve read that. Still a fine enough Green Lantern parody.

Seroquel ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Just Morazzo and Prince using the 9 panel grid format to show off how good they are at pseudo-horror. Loved this

Terminal Ride ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

A man takes a taxi ride to the end of the universe. Lovely.

Quarantine Comix: Guest Series (with Chris O’Halloran coloring “Nature Calls” and “Small”)

Nature Calls by Declan Shalvey ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ 1/2

A horrific and gory short that plays out alongside narration of “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasdale. Perfect fit into the Ice Cream Man universe.

Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin by Deniz Camp, Artyom Topilin, and Aditya Bidikar ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Holy fuck this was so sad but probably the strongest short in the whole collection.

This is all seen through the eyes of a little girl as she watches out her back window that look out onto a street during the beginning of COVID. She begins to draw on the window which changes the world outside.

Whole thing was dark as fuck, but the ending was chilling.

Creature Causeway by Al Ewing and PJ Holden 1/2

I love both Ewing and Holden, but this is one of the worst short stories I have ever read. What the fuck happened here? Some weird Animal Crossing/Minecraft parody takes a dark twist that just doesn’t land at all for me.

Small by Christopher Cantwell and Eoin Marron ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Never knew Cantwell could do horror, but he did great work with this one. Eoin Marron’s art was awesome as well, it reminded me of a more refined version of Mike Deodato’s latest work.

TLDR;

This was an amazing collection of ICM shorts that thankfully only had a few duds sprinkled in. Most of these stories worked for me, with the best being Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin and Convention of Mikes. Recommended to any Ice Cream Man fans

Praise for supporting comic books during quarantine, and boo for me thinking the gags would be about quarantine itself.

Ice cream man's comics always make me feel like I'm a small child turning on some late night channel that I just can't fully grasp yet. Some stories are simply odd, while others play with my neurons. Hard to describe, really...

Strašne slabý odvar toho, čo ma väčšinou na tejto sérii baví. Bol tam tak jeden kratučký príbeh, ktorý ma trochu pobavil, ostatné boli slabé, nezaujímavé a ničím zapamätateľné.

A set of short stories published during Covid. Martín Morazzo does most of the stories -- and shows he's an integral part of the Ice Cream Man team because the guests artists just don't quite nail the vibe. It's all fine, but the stories are a bit too short to have any weight. I enjoyed the one where Prince compares his reaction to a plague to Shakespeares. Unlike Shakespeare, Prince spends most of his time checking the news on his phone - not creating inspired works of art.

An interesting and varied assortment of stories. A quick and compelling read.

Great idea to do the interim mini comic issue, and hurray for supporting the comic stores!
These short stories are kind of a mixed bag, only one or two are kinda quarantine related - but all of them had a vibe of something a bit apocalyptic. As in dealing with inner demons, writer's block, depression, unknown forces from who knows where.... The bastard idea stepchildren of the creators' subconscious, maybe.

Shorter than the volumes but they gave us something in the same real world (slightly) vein as previous.
One that really sticks out is the POV narrative of a man who won't take his medication being talked to by his ex.

A bland collection of stories that don't have the time to breathe so they end up being kind of forgettable. The "Convention of Mikes" and "Seroquel" stories were the highlights, but being so short there isn't much else to really say about them.

The guest pieces were not too bad, with the Declan Shalvey and Deniz Camp/Artyom Topilin stories being the more memorable ones.

As is the nature of a compilation like this under the conditions they were made, this is a fairly inconsistent issue, with plenty of fun ideas toyed with alongside issues that simply didn't land for me. The guest stories in the back didn't vibe well with Prince's work in my opinion, and I found myself almost wanting to skip them. A decent read but nothing I would go out of my way to recommend.

Nothing really stood out, nothing bad, but always good to see comics still kicking.

Hodně příjemné počtení, Maxwellovi příběhy byli pecka a krom jednoho i příběhy hostujících tvůrců byli fajn.

Jako takový příjemný bonus k sérii Ice Cream Mana dostačující.

Okay okay...
if you haven’t started these START NOW.
Don’t question it DO IT
If you’re a fan of Twilight Zone, Tales From The Crypt, Pete And Pete, Goosebumps but NOT for kids this is for you. Twisted stories with harsh truth of daily life in some peoples lives maybe even your own.
It’s a mind trip in a half that will spill over into each issue.
I am beyond in love and can’t wait to see where these go.
