A new manga has started up and before the inevitable anime series begins (this is one that it would be very likely to happen with) I figured I would check out the manga because it looked fun... unfortunately, not as good as I hoped.
What’s it about?
A teenaged girl has died when she was saving a child’s life. That girl was thought of as extraordinary and nobody left her alone. When she died she met God and he decided to give her a new life in a new world where she would have magical powers, her only request was that her abilities would be average. Now as a 10 year old in this new fantasy world she discovers her powers are much more powerful than those of a regular human.
Pros:
The story is pretty interesting and fun.
The art is great! It’s fun, chibi style suits the story perfectly.
The characters are surprisingly interesting.
The comedic elements of this book are pretty well done! I chuckled quite a bit.
Cons:
This is lacking in action. There was one action scene I remember but for the most part, there isn’t any.
The dialogue is pretty bad. In all fairness, it might just be that way when translated into English but still, in my personal reading experience I didn’t like it.
This story is kinda predictable.
The ending is insanely anti-climactic.
Normally, unless it’s a ridiculous amount I don’t mind fan service but here it was slightly uncomfortable. There’s not piles of it (at least not that I noticed), there’s no actual sex or nudity but there’s still a few moments which is weird because none of the characters are over 18. The most notable instance is when a 14 year old character’s boobs went outside of the panel... yeah. Also, the main character is ten, so any fan service moments with her... why?
The end has some bonus stories done in prose which I find annoying because if I wanted to read the prose one I would read the light novel, not the manga. At least it didn’t interrupt the story (looking at you, Watchmen).
Overall:
This is disappointing. It’s not bad because I did enjoy it a fair bit but I wouldn’t recommend it and I’m not even bothered to read volume 2. You get a fun story with nice art and some laughs but the lack of action, creepy fan service moments and anti-climactic ending unfortunately make it less good. If you’re really interested and your local library has it (that’s how I read it) give it a try, if not it’s probably better for you to spend your money on a better manga book (for fantasy lovers I’d say Berserk though be warned it’s not cute chibi fun like this).

This was a mess. I didn’t care for the lead character. I found her predicament kind of ridiculous. She wishes for an average life yet still massively excels at anything she does. It was very much a “woe is me” kind of story and I could care less.

Not sure what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn't a ditsy girl who sucks at hiding her powers. But it seems like she is enjoying this life. I like the fact that the magic of this world is from nanomachines, but I wonder if there will ever be an explanation on that as well. Either way this was just adorable and humorous. Makes me wonder what will happen next.

If the lengthy title didn't give it away, "Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life" is the manga version of a light novel. And as the title suggests, it's an Isekai series about a girl genius who is reincarnated into another body super special awesome powers and abilities.
As a whole, I really liked this first volume. I liked the characters, I liked Adele's backstory, the world and its magic is interesting. Unlike other Isekai series about a boy thrown into the role of world savior, Adele's story is smaller in scale, so far just her trying to live her life hiding that she's super special awesome so she can live a semi-normal life without huge expectations thrown at her and I liked that aspect. There's only so many "I'm from another world and I'm here to save you all!" narratives I can read before it gets a little stale.
Now for the thing I don't know how I feel about. The fact that it's a female character that wants to be average. It makes sense in this series with this character. Her previous life was hindered by her "genius" because she couldn't make friends and her family fought about her, so it makes perfect sense that she would want to not be special and just experience normal life. And I love her to pieces, and I love that she exists.
The problem is that she's the only one I know of. Most of the Isekai series I hear about center a male character living a male power fantasy. To finally have a female Isekai protagonist, and to have her actively try to not be just that is a little frustrating. It makes sense for her character and the story being told, so I don't begrudge this series for that.

"Didn't I Say, etc." takes a common light-novel theme - someone from our world is reincarnated in a sword-and-sorcery world - and takes it somewhere quirky and interesting. The protagonist did not benefit from being exceptional in her first life, and asked to be reborn with average abilities. An odd sense of 'average' was applied.
I enjoyed the light novel considerably, but the manga did not work as an adaptation of the story. Too much story was squeezed into too few pages, and the result did not flow well. It was the social dimension of the story that made the novel work - the protagonist trying to fit into one milieu and then another with her combination of extraordinary abilities and social cluelessness - and there was hardly room for that in the manga. There was barely room for a skeleton of a story, fleshed out with scenes that worked in the novel, but didn't make a lot of sense in the manga because most of the context was missing.
I enjoyed the light novel considerably, but the manga did not work as an adaptation of the story. Too much story was squeezed into too few pages, and the result did not flow well. My first impression was: "Yikes, they skipped the entire first arc!"
How wrong I was. The manga started during Adele's time as a hunter / trainee hunter, only showing flashbacks of her first year in Eckland Academy as a student (first arc).
The first arc was nicely inserted as one of Adele's "bed stories" – an important pastime they always do in the light novels – and takes more than half of the first volume. It wasn't a mere flashback at all. If someone saw the first chapter over the internet, they'll probably have the wrong impression of the contents but the first arc is in there.
Do give it a try if you loved the LNs. It's nice to see them all drawn. :)

Much better than I remember the light novel being. The manga has pictures so probably subjective opinion. Only remembered it existed due to the anime airing right now. The manga seems better than the anime and better than I remember the light novel being.
Short but a good beginning to the series hopefully the next ones will also be good.

This was surprisingly endearing and heartwarming! My only issue was that the continuity was not the best chapter to chapter, but I get the impression that our heroine may be an unreliable narrator to an extent. I hope the next volume is just as engaging!

I think this is a nice change of pace from the normal guy harem next life trope. It's super cute and charming the whole way through. Highly recommend.

Two of my favorite genres mixed together! Isekai and Cute girls doing cute things! So far I'm really adoring this manga and I can't wait to read more of it. I also just loooove the art.

Absolutely adorable. Everything I like in a manga. Wholesome, exciting, female friendship, and adorable drawings. The stories in the back were very sweet as well.

Cute but definitely for the younger crowd. Jumps between times and locations can be confusing but the characters are light and fun and the art keeps the action moving.

The story and the art are both reasonably well done; it's just not my cup of tea. Probably best for a preteen female audience.

Vol 1: (Chapters 1-6)
Well this was just alright. I kind of like the story, magic, and the camaraderie - but I have to knock off a star because the art/"fan service" of the minor characters was just annoying and unnecessary.
I know you can't really get away from that kind of thing in some mangas (side eye) but still....its not for moi. 😐
