Powieść rozpoczyna się w Mindin, położonym na przeciwległym wobec Saint Nazaire brzegu Loary, na początku lat 60. XX wieku, w dawnym lazarecie, który przekształcono w szpital psychiatryczny. Kulawy chłopiec, którego ojciec jest administratorem szpitala, zaprzyjaźnia się z jednym z pacjentów, dawnym marynarzem, który, kiwając się w przód i w tył, powtarza bez przerwy ten sam zagadkowy zwrot: Taba-Taba. Począwszy od tego momentu Patrick Deville opowiada Historię, zmieniając perspektywę widzenia raz na makro, raz na mikro. Francja to nie tylko sześciokąt (Hexagon) na mapie: narrator wędruje po całym świecie, wspominając kolonialną epopeję nie tylko z jej klęskami, ale też ryzykownymi przedsięwzięciami (kanały Sueski, Panamski).

Ten wielki powieściowy fresk prowadzi nas od Napoleona III aż do zamachów, które ostatnio wstrząsnęły Francją, opisując po drodze okopy I wojny światowej, Front Ludowy, kapitulację, okupację, ruch oporu, Vercors, wyzwolenie.

Powieść została wyróżniona Prix Roger Callois.

About the author

Patrick Deville (born 14 December 1957) is a French writer and studied comparative literature and philosophy at the University of Nantes. During the 1980s, Patrick Deville lived in the Middle East, Nigeria and Algeria. In the 1990s, he regularly visited Cuba and Uruguay.

In 2011, Lire magazine editors selected Kampuchea as the best French novel of the year. His novel Plague and Cholera (life of the bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin) was one of the most prominent of the literary season (2012), and was a finalist in almost all French book awards. He received the Fnac and the Prix Femina prize for the novel.

His books have now been translated into a dozen languages.

J’ai appris / réappris beaucoup sur l’histoire de la France et sa place dans le monde, j’ai apprécié lire comment plusieurs générations de gens l’ont vécu et la trace que ça leur a laissé. Le roman rappelle à quel point notre existence individuelle ne tient qu’à une série de circonstances, et nombreux pendant les guerres meurent beaucoup trop jeunes. Mais j’ai trouvé que c’était un condensé de bien trop d’informations à la suite des autres, de faits historiques juxtaposés dans le temps et dans le monde. J’ai eu du mal à m’accrocher.

Un pavé, parfois si touffus qu'il peut en être rebutant. l'histoire de 4 générations d'une famille, ballotées et confrontées à des (petits) bouts de l'histoire de France&colonies. Le vrai plaisir pour les amoureux d'histoire sont les liens évènementiels pour un même lieu ou une même date et ce mélange d'anecdotes et de confrontation historiques. C'est détaillé, foisonnant, parfois distordu et le seul taba taba comme lien m'a paru insuffisant comme fil rouge.

Demasiado autorreferente y con un argumento sin interés, salvo para el autor y sus amigos. Difícil de interesarse por esa historia familiar. Sin embargo, hace un buen barrido de la historia francesa del último siglo y medio y su influencia mundial.

Non sono riuscito a cogliere tutti i legami e le concatenazioni fra le diverse generazioni.. poi mi sono sfuggiti alcuni riferimenti alla cultura francese che evidentemente non conosco abbastanza profondamente. In conclusione mi è piaciuto, ma non troppo.
