The Chronicles of Pelenor quadrilogy, written by Meg Cowley, is a young adult fantasy series that depict the experiences of the young girl Harper during her experiences in a foreign world. The kings spy master, Dimitri, unleashes an old force upon the world, and Harper finds out that she has connections that she didn’t know of.
The series tell of an epic tale, that is overall finely written. There are good dialogs, a diverse set of characters, and a plot that isn’t too complex.
My biggest problems with the series are the shallow character portrayals, a lack of descriptions and accompanying world building, and quite badly written action. Many of the characters are quite shallow and that especially goes for the bad guys who are plainly just evil for the sake of evil. The main character, Harper, is quite unlikeable in my humble opinion, and I didn’t really care for her at all. Nothing that she does seems to help her learn, and while she develops physically over the series, she doesn’t seem to acknowledge it at all. There’s a good set of side characters, but unfortunately they are just that, side characters. The spymaster though, is by far the most interesting one. Most scenes are accompanied by short descriptions, but I was always asking for more to really set the book apart. It is a complete phenocopy of Tolkien’s Middleearth, so you should not expect anything outside of what is in his books, which is a real pity, and it makes for a series that is quite unremarkable. Also, the action is not very well written. Most of it is written from a descriptive narrators point of view, so there’s a strong lack of tension with regards to all characters involved. The author even goes as far as writing an action section with literal “swish, slash, stab” etc., which is horrible writing! I really hope he improves in this area.
Overall, it is a pretty standard fantasy tale with a contained plot, which would could have been quite a bit more with some good beta readers to correct for the authors shortcommings. It does not break any novel ground at all, but if you like a young adult fantasy series that is easy to follow, then this is an acceptable pick.
I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by Jack Voraces. He did an overall excellent job, with great distinct voices for different characters and thoughts, randomly added accents, and clear narration that moved very well in pitch with the written text. Very enjoyable, and I felt he added a lot to the story!
I received this audiobook for free in return for a review. I have no affiliation with the author, the narrator, the publisher, or their pets (Although I am sure the latter are quite nice!).
I have reviewed all three books individually as i read them and in this the 3rd book in the series, Chronicles of Pelenor turns really dark as we see Sarandon take over Pelenor, ruling with a hard fist all who cross him, and doing so for the evil dark one who has taken him over, Valxiron himself. The order of Valxiron has risen once again and Harper, designated the heir of Saradon is initiated into the order being forced to learn dark magic by the Grandmaster of the Order Khyrion who would do anything to get his filthy hands on her. She lived with Dimitrius, former spymaster to the King, who was now dead, and learnt the ways of the court from him. Her friends were scattered all over the realm doing their best to right the wrongs Saradon had already inflicted on their people. Ragnar was fighting by his brethren to overcome the goblin horde and take back Afnirheim whilst Aedon, Brand and Erika try to make an ally out of Queen Solanaceae of the woodland realm of Tur-Na-Alathea but she was an enemy of Aedon so entering her realm was no mean feat and extremely dangerous. Thus Harper finds herself alone as her friends are scattered all over the realm doing her best to unravel the prophecy given to her by Erendriel in order to bring down Saradon. She had said that the heart of a dragon had resurrected him and the heart of a dragon would cast him down but Harper and Dimitri could not locate the dragonhearts horde which used to belong to the King. Can the friends rally round and help one another to bring peace and order to Pelenor once again as they rid the realm from the evil which has beset them? Wow this series just gets more and more exciting and for those who love grimdark fantasy this is a novel you will surely enjoy!
Spectacular Series! Epic fantasy series that follows the adventures of a Harper, a peasant girl, as she is dropped in the middle of the age-old battle between good and evil. Wonderful characters that tug at your heartstrings. I highly recommend this spectacular series!
Heart of Dragons - Loved it! Very enjoyable story of a young girl who finds herself on an adventure more amazing and terrifying than she had imagined possible. Wonderful characters in an interesting world. I look forward to seeing where the story goes next.
Court of Shadows - Goblins & Dwarves. Harper is back with her friends and evil has risen. Bonds are forged as secrets are revealed. The elven court crumbles as Saradon’s goblin horde takes on the Dwarven kingdom. Hope is slim, but Harper and her friends endure.
Order of Valxiron - Great! Lots of intriguing as Harper, now under Saradon’s power, learns to survive in the Elven court and as an initiate in the Order of Valxiron. Realms are saved and lost as alliances are forged and deals are made. I can’t wait to finish the story in Mark of Fate!
Mark of Fate - Spectacular! A truly epic conclusion to an excellent story. Fabulous characters in amazing situations. It will keep you on the edge of your seat while playing with your emotions and making you shake your head in stunned amazement.
Heart of Dragons: A Sword & Sorcery Epic Fantasy (Chronicles of Pelenor, Book 1), my fifth read from author Meg Cowley. From the opening pages, you could tell this was an epic in the making with the story requiring multiple volumes to tell. Wonderful characters, detailed settings. Very good read! The Chronicles of Pelenor is a fantastic fantasy series. Harper is a great lead character and the supporting characters she comes across are excellent as well. All of the characters have real growth and development arcs over the course of four books. There's enough variation in this series from other fantasy stories with the use of dragon hearts and other magic. Each story builds to an epic conclusion in book 4 that leaves you feeling satisfied in the time investment. Each book is a good length and there's plenty of content to digest.
I really enjoyed the series and love the fantasy books that Meg is putting out. The stories have great character growth and real consequences, which is important. I'd definitely recommend you checking out this series if you like fantasy stories.
*** Reviewing “ORDER OF VALXIRON (#3)” *** In this third book of the Chronicles of Pelenor, Harper and her friends become separated. Evil has returned to Pelenor and the danger is everywhere as our heroes are trying to restore the balance. Do they have the strength? Will it be enough?
This is an amazing series, well-written, with wonderful characters who grow with every challenge. When orphan Harper takes a legendary Dragonheart, she unwittingly signs her own death warrant. The story line is exciting and draws the reader along as it explodes in so many different directions. Grab this awesome collection of the complete series and run with the high level of action! It’s a wild ride, but well worth the trip!
I read each of these books separately, waiting ever so patiently for each one (it was sooo hard i tell you!), whereas you, you can read the books right after each other! I recommend this box set for this reason as well as the fact this is an absolutely fantastic read! Interchanging viewpoints make these books all the more interesting and aids in fleshing out all the characters. Fast paced at times, action and a sub plot of romance, friendship and hardships make it ih si easy to keep turning the pages. Meg has such a way with words that her world building helps transport you to where each and every character is on the page and it's easy to get lost in the atmosphere she creates.
I have read each of these books separately and each one was very well written but I would expect nothing less from Meg Cowley. I am very confident that when I read anything written by her that I will be transported to an exhilarating world of magic with wondrous heartfelt characters you can empathize with or evil to bring chills to your bones, and brilliant worlds are brought to life. I guarantee you will not be disappointed with this epic box set is. It is not one to miss!
I admit, it was slow going at the beginning, Harper’s early life was despairing but my, the girl had guts. When she finds the Dragonstone the adventure begins and doesn’t let up. I loved the cast of characters, (Dimi was spot on) the plot twists and wonderful descriptions of imaginary places that felt so real. Well written and edited, this series is definitely worth reading!
These books are worthy of your time. At least I think so. There is intrigue, deceit, sorcerer, dragons, epic battles, and a little romance thrown in. Characters to love and definitely ones to not. And I can't forget the roller coaster ride of emotions. I am ready for more. The world the author has created has many more stories to tell. I can't wait. Oh, but how about more dragons, and more importantly, let us get close to one or two.
The overarching theme is one of god vs evil from god-like beings through countries, between people and within people. There are many levels to the stories in these books. I highly enjoyed the way relationships evolved between people who encounter each other as strangers and end up relying on each other not only for their very lives but for the fate of the world around them.
As far as simple clean fantasy romance goes, this is an above average series. The plot is creative, not just another retelling of the same old basic storyline. The romance wasn’t unbelievable - love at first sight, fell in love with kidnapper who actually turned out to be a nice guy, or anything like that. If you like this genre, I’d recommend checking it out. It started out somewhat slow for me, but, by late book 1 or early book 2, I was committed.
This series is absolutely wonderful! Meg is a brilliant writer and crafts an extremely believable world with characters that you will love and care about. You will have every emotion available to you touched and by the end you will feel an amazing sense of gratification. This is one of my favorite series' and Meg is one of my favorite authors! You will not be disappointed by this series!
WOW, totally knocked out with your skills. I was fully engaged with the worlds you created Meg. It has rated as one of the top three books I have read in my long life. Captivated, identified and fully engaged with your storys and charaters. I will be buying more of your books. Left feeling they were as real as me. Thank you.
Thank you. I really enjoyed this series. When I wasn't reading I found myself thinking about the characters and couldn't wait for the chance to start reading again. It was a great story with wonderful characters, flaws and all. If you're a sword and sorcery fan you will enjoy the ride.
What can I say? Thrilling, gripping ,exciting, action packed,.... All of the above and more! The story is such that you have to keep reading. Becoming immersed in the world of Pelenor is so easy to do. The individual characters bloom when they play their part in this original story of good against evil. The friendship amongst the different races is refreshing.
I struggled to get through this. While it did get a little better the farther into the series you get ultimately it wasn’t worth it. The characters were annoying and the author seemed like they weren’t sure how they really wanted the story to unfold, in the dungeon out of the dungeon nope back into the dungeon just kidding back out again... meh. The whole thing left a lot to be desired
This saga captured my interest from the first page of book 1 and still hasn't let go after reading the heart lifting last words in the collection. Cowley has a gift for character development and epic storytelling. She had found a new fan in me. Now if you'll excuse me, I must begin reading the next series as I already miss our heroes!
A 5 star + read... utterly engaging, entertaining and enjoyable read bringing through the highs and lows of this fantasy genre tale. Superb writing craft and solid story lines underpin the epic tale leaving you wanting more. Have ready a few excellent fantasy genre boxsets in last 2 years and this takes 1st place!!
It got too dark and gruesome I had to quit reading. The balance wasn't there. Complete hopelessness with no light isn't enjoyable to read. There does need to still be the good you are fighting to save to give interest. There is only so much selling the bad guy. We get it. He is bad. Enough already. Move on
The Chronicles of Pelenor: Complete Series Collection, by Meg Cowley, will give you pleasurable company throughout the series. The story flows smoothly from each volume without constantly wondering where you are, or who these characters might be. Great characters make the Chronicles of Pelenor a joy to read.
I enjoyed the characters, their interactions, and it was easy to believe their friendships and rivalries. The story was very entertaining and wraps you inside so you feel as if you're part of the adventure.
I love the way Meg Cowley writes...as if you are living within the story she weaves. The perfect balance of light and dark. Grab this series, you won't be disappointed. Well done!
I’m not really big on women who manage to persevere while barely lifting a finger. The story dragged for me. Not as much action as I like in a story. I won’t be looking for any more books in this series.
The series had me from the beginning. I couldn't put it down. From morning to late, late at night, I couldn't get enough. I was so enthralled and so sad it ended. I fell in love with the characters and their journey was wonderful.
If you believe in magic, elves, dwarfs and dragons then this series will grip you from the 1st page of the first book till the last page of book 4. Awesome characters, word building with more than enough suspension to keep you reading😄
I absolutely loved this series! It was very well written. Harper is a great character, strong minded, independent but very caring of those she loves. My favorite characters were Brand and Erika. I look forward to reading more of Meg Cowley's books.
