I thoroughly enjoyed this fourth book in the series tracking the exploits of Ian Vaughan. As with the previous books in the series it's fast moving with constant twists and turns.

I like Vaughan because, unlike other thriller heroes such as Bond and Reacher, he has human doubts and worries. He fell into this career as an agent almost by accident and sometimes even he wonders if he's up to it.

In this book alongside the obvious baddies he worries about who on his own side is to be trusted. I won't tell you how he gets on, other than there is clearly a book five in preparation!

Richard Frankland's research is clearly intense because I know one of the setting for this book, Madeira, very well, and I can track Vaughan's movement step by step and picture every location. I don't know the other destinations but I guess the same applies.

Although this is a series, each book stands alone as a good tale with enough of the back story included so those who've not read the earlier books are not left out. However, having read them all, my recommendation would be to seek out the earlier volumes, if you've not already done so, and hear it all from the very start.

I'll start counting down now to the next instalment.

In Treacherous Waters by Richard V Frankland is a great spy thriller. Settings in Africa, Portugal, and beyond come to life as do the characters - from ugly cornered rats running guns, to beautiful women dragged into the world of espionage by powerful uncles and murdered husbands.
The plot twists and turns and soon apparent friends are mistrusted as much as apparent foes. Recommended. (and our hero has a yacht!!!)

Fantastic romp around the western Atlantic with Ian Vaughan. I love the detail. I am a lover of the island of Madeira and it’s people. I particularly like the attention to detail where the author clearly knows some local places and people.
Would love to meet the author in the Real Canoa and spend an evening with Bruno and Alicia together! One day .....

A brilliant continuation of Richard Frankland's series on the exciting adventures of his hero Ian Vaughn. The first three books in the series were good and Richard has managed to devise new plots within plots to retain my interest all the way through. I look forward to another in due course.
