It Gives You Strength
An alien visitor to the primitive planet Earth has one mission-to bring a child home. However, while searching for her, the alien is caught in a gang war. A well written and witty page-turner that’s full of memorable characters...
Forty-some years ago my uncle gave me a science fiction anthology. It was a thick red hardback that I read from cover to cover. It inspired a lifelong love of the genre. The stories in that book made me think outside the box. They filled me with awe for the imagination it took to write them. That book still remains in my collection today. The title is OMNIBUS OF SCIENCE FICTION, edited by Groff Conklin, a well-known and prolific editor of the genre. It was published in 1952, the Golden Age of Science Fiction. It’s a substantial volume, 562 pages, with 43 stories divided into sections relating to a common theme. Some stories are fun, some are thought-provoking, and some are adventurous. I love them all.
It Gives You Strength by Philip Raymond Brown is a brilliantly written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn characters and settings. The author weaves a well-crafted Sci-Fi Fantasy that’s packed to the rafters with plenty of mystery, action and adventure. Skillfully constructed, this exciting and energetic novel will have you turning the pages from beginning to end.
Set against the backdrop of New York city during the prohibition era, the story follows an alien anthropologist, Tashan Zho, who is on a rescue mission to Earth of the mid-1920s. What makes the story even more interesting is that the characters interact with actual historic figures, including mobster Jack “Legs” Diamond, heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey, and World War heroine Edith Cavell.
The book description further explains: ‘Zho, is transported into the dying body of bootlegger Ryan Costello. Immediately following his death, Costello’s body is reanimated by the alien. Unfortunately, Zho’s new “host body” is so damaged from a decade of alcohol abuse that the alien’s memory and vital files are corrupted. I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the story in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a well written sci-fi fantasy with perfect pacing.
It Gives You Strength was a fascinating and captivating read that had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly spellbinding journey.
The contrast between tone and content is a characteristic talent of only a few authors. Philip Raymond Brown pays as much attention to his sentences as he does to his plots, shifting or consolidating meaning with the use of a single word. His writing is impeccably honed, full of juxtapositions and qualifications that help to create a humorous atmosphere that will leave you laughing out loud.
There is something very magical about reading fantasy fiction. It speaks to the very thread of my imagination, jolting it to life and transporting it on an exhilarating journey. This book did exactly that. Fans of the Sci-Fi Fantasy genre will not be disappointed. I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
As a lifelong fan of science fiction, this for me was a phenomenal read. For sci-fi fans looking for an interesting, three-dimensional and stimulating read, this would be a great find. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.

The book is about Tashan Zho, who is an Alien scientist and comes on earth by transforming himself into a normal boy, to complete a mission but after coming on Earth, weird things start happening to him moreover he can't even remember all the details about his plan.

The only thing that Tashan Zho still remembers is to find Mike Kelly.

Now, Kelly is the leader of a criminal gang. But Mike isn't what he is. I mean, He's also the only person who can help Tashan discover his mission's objective and help complete it.
Somehow, Tashan soon recalls his directive. He has to rescue an alien child from the infamous Craig Colony before his home planet sends a rescue team to do the job, likely destroying Earth.

Ohh things start turning into thrill when Mike and the family of Mike get involved.

I can't give you the spoiler hence sumping up here only. One thing that I would say is this is the first sci-fi of this kind where everything seems so interesting, and with smooth narration, you will feel as if you are there in the story.

Now the question when Tashan Zho has forgotten everything, will she be able to get Mike with herself? What problems are they going to face?
The book is a must-read for all sci-fi lovers to raise their level. From narration to characters development, from story to cover everything is well penned, and, good. I recommend this book to read if Thriller and sci-fi is your genre.

The story begins with a Killer Drone at Space operated by an artificial intelligence Lady Melanie who attacked the spaceship of Degan Planet in 1918, killing all the crew members and the royal family (King & Queen) in the spaceship. They saved their seven year old princess by transferring her system protocol in a new born girl called Nora, inhabitant on Earth. Members of High Council in Degan forced Dr Tashan Zho an anthropologist, for a mission (in 1926) to land on Earth. Zho's mission was to find & protect Mike(an army and a boxing champion) and his family because Mike is the key to the door of rescuing the Degan Princess who was in Craig Colony. Zho's system protocol was transferred to Costello's body who was Mike's friend. In the meantime Zho comes to know about the illegal business of Mike with "legs"Diamond. Now the story moves furthermore on how Zho manages himself with the inhabitants on earth and grows trust of Mike on him.
The novel commence with Sci-fi Genre where we find Aliens landing on Earth. But it takes up with Action genre where we see Mike Kelly's boxing match. Set in Vermont Canada Border, the story proceeds with Kelly's illegal business with the gangsters where we are introduced with the Crime genre. But we find little historical information about the war and those
times. So it's a mashup of action/crime/ genre.
The novel portrays the lifestyle and back business of an army man. Their rights, lifestyle and mentality. Among all the fictional scenes in the entire novel, there is a touch of reality
I expected something different in the novel tho. There are scenes that acts like a bridge to connect two major plots of the story. Those bridge scenes could have been shortly written instead of elaborated conversation.
While reading you will definitely find engrossing scenes where Zho will speak nonsense and act weird (and you will get the feeling as if Zho got caught with the truth that he is an alien ) but the way he manages to move on being Costello Is amazing. As there are crimes scenes scattered in the story , many a times your heartbeat will increase & you will be in tension cause you know the characters will get caught and there's danger ahead. The author created the plot in a brilliant to make you get the rollercoaster ride of emotions in you.
When you read this book, you feel like the danger is coming behind. Something really grave is going on in the villain's mind. And you will find some twists and turn in the plots. It's like the plots are within the plots. There are two different settings that runs parallel to each other. It's quite a slow read until page 190 when things turns out to be super exciting.
Writing style is Easy enough for any age reader. But I will recommend this book specifically to those who love to read action/crime with Sci-fi genre books.
I do not appreciate Mike Kelly much in the novel cause he had that attitude of over confidence on himself on every situation and matter. (And that's his ultimate downfall in boxing matches I think) Reading Kelly everytime and his rude throw of words used to make me vexed. And the author made the reader create in them the real rage of emotions while reading the character of the novel. I really liked it.

Thought this was an easy read and a fun story that left me wanting to read more! In addition to the bootlegging, mobsters and boxing, I really enjoyed Kelly, the flawed but like-able military hero,who really makes the book come to life as a hero/ leader of men from World War 1. If you have a military background, the fellowship of serving together and the brotherhood of war helped to add to the depth of the book!

A sci-fi with a historical fiction, mobster twist…not a mash up I would’ve imagined, but definitely a mashup I’m glad to have read!
This book follows the mission of an alien anthropologist (possibly the most conscious, dedicated) as he is catapulted to Earth to save an alien princess. Along the way he encounters some setbacks (technical difficulties that could lead to the end of the world as we know it) and meets some pretty interesting characters.
If you’re a history buff with a love for sci-if or a sci-fi lover with an interest in history; if you enjoy mobster/bootlegger/ mobsters attempting a reform, if you enjoy quirky moments of an alien trying to fit in with humans definitely give this a read!

Book start with the introduction of Tashan Zho an Alien scientist (Anthropologist) who will soon come to life in the body of the former Ryan Costello and Tashan Zho sent to earth on a mission to rescue the Princess ( member of the royal family) and bring her home. Kelly is the leader of a criminal gang of world war who helped Tashan Zho for his mission.
This book is an action packed mashup of historical fiction and science fiction with fantasy set in upstate New York( America) during prohibition. There is an irritating tendency to jump into a different characters thoughts mid- scenes but the story flowed from scene to scene with ease and there are many attention grabbing moments.
Funny moments (specially the concept of data corruption) in the story line makes it very interesting. Author maintained the suspense and created an inquisitiveness among readers and somewhere it's really intriguing and original but even being so lengthy ( 300+ pages) the book keeps the readers hooked up so I would like to appreciate the author's imagination and creative thinking.
Science - fiction genre fans will not be disappointed. It's my second science fiction book although fiction zone is not at top of my list but i am glad to read it and looking forward to read more books by the author.

An engaging Read worth 5 stars
I'm so glad that I recieved a free kindle copy of this book. Very excitedly I completed reading a book from Sci-fi genre for the first time. As Sci-Fi is an out of comfort zone genre for me, A historical & Scientific fiction book seemed to be a mundane read for me. But it was really hard to put down this book without completely reading.
It gives you Strength by Philip Raymond Brown is a very brilliantly crafted Sci-fi novel with Historical fiction & Fantasy influence. Well packed with mystery, adventure & thrilling circumstances, the book imprints deep appreciation impression on a reader's mind.
I'm not a Sci-fi fan & I confess that the previous Sci-fi books that I attempted reading remain unfinished reading. For such a Sci-fi phobic reader like me, the book turned out to be a five star read, which itself proves this book will be a phenomenal read for all Sci-fi lovers, undoubtedly.
The story plot is that Lady Melanie (Tashan Zho) an alien, is given the responsibility of protecting their princess-who is living inside the body of an earthling- thereby protecting the monarchy of their planet, which indirectly turns out to be a way of protecting earth from destruction. When she comes to earth & make use of advanced technologies to live using the body of Ryan Castello, the story becomes too exciting.The involvement of Bootlegger & Major Mike Kelly & his family changes the storyline into a really thrilling phase. I found myself laughing at lots of instances though its a thriller story. The story is beautifully set against the backdrop of NewYork during 1920s.
The earth, its primitivenesses, the technological advancement yet to be experienced by the earthlings and all are indirectly described by the Author.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way the author presented the book, in terms of character development, descriptional areas, dialogue delivery etc.
I'm very much satisfied & thankful for the free copy of this book as it helped me don't miss a five star read from Sci-fi genre.

What an amazingly intriguing science fiction filled with action and mystery. The very first chapter had me hooked and the author kept the thrill till the very last.

I don't read science fiction much, but this was surely a remarkable read. The character building and incidents description are amazingly nice and lucid. The language used is intriguing. The author has kept the suspense and thrill throughout the story.
Overall, an excellent read and I completely recommend it.

I don't read science fiction much, but this was surely a remarkable read. The character building and incidents description are amazingly nice and lucid. The language used is intriguing. The author has kept the suspense and thrill throughout the story.
Overall, an excellent read and I completely recommend it.

After the promising start in space, the book switches to regular earth life, with boxing & bootlegging taking up a major chunk of the book.
How the protagonist uses the intriguing concept of transference to achieve his mission is the main gist of the story.

Few sci-fi novels that succeed in drawing the reader's attention, especially if the novel deals with something real can make science fiction possible, taking into consideration the subject that is in an easy and understandable language for the non-English readers, as well as the plot of work so tight that you can find yourself reading without feeling boring, enjoying the progress of events as if you were a part ,

And Jack Dempsey, mobster Jack, of course, you won't understand all the backgrounds of the work unless you google it, to know the origin of the labels if they are actually real.
The novel also deals with crime, and that's what we noticed in Mike Kelly's work with.

A work that reads at once, written in simple and understandable language.

As an avid reader of both science fiction and historical fiction, I didn’t expect It Gives You Strength to weave the two genres together so seamlessly but Philip Raymond Brown absolutely nailed it. This book surprised me in the best possible way.
The story follows Tashan Zho, an alien sent to Earth during the Prohibition era on what should have been a straightforward rescue mission. But when his consciousness takes over the body of a dead bootlegger, things quickly spiral into chaos. What really hooked me was how Brown manages to make a 1920s gangster world filled with rum-running, mob rivalries, and smoky speakeasies feel completely natural as the backdrop for a sci-fi narrative. It’s a wild premise that works perfectly.
The writing is sharp, cinematic, and full of atmosphere. You can practically smell the bootleg whiskey and hear the jazz echoing from the hidden clubs. Yet, underneath the action, there’s also a lot of heart. Tashan’s struggle to understand human emotions while trying to complete his mission gives the story depth and empathy. He’s an alien, but in many ways, he’s more human than the gangsters around him.
I also appreciated how the book doesn’t rely on nonstop action alone, it takes its time building the world and characters, especially Mike Kelly, the flawed but compelling gang leader who becomes central to the story. Their uneasy alliance gives the book a buddy-drama vibe that reminded me a little of classic noir films.
By the time I reached the final chapters, I was fully invested and couldn’t put it down. The pacing was excellent, and the blend of genres kept it fresh from beginning to end. It’s rare to find a story that feels both thrilling and genuinely original, but this one delivers.

An alien anthropologist from Dagan finds himself in the body of a bootlegger in Prohibition era New York in this entertaining mix of science fiction and history. He's been sent to Earth as a member of a rescue mission to retrieve his planet's crown princess to her home planet. Transported into an earth child's body years ago when her parents died it is now time for her return and a fleet of Dagan warships are on their way to get her. Tashan Zho has been selected to get the princess and he is really being used as a pawn in his planet's political games. When he wakes up in the body of an alcoholic bootlegger he must work to regain his memories of what his mission entails and find the princess before the invasion force arrives and, on entering Earth's atmosphere, destroy it. On earth he finds himself in contact in with historical figures such as Legs Diamond, Jack Dempsey and Edith Cavell. A stranger in a strange land, Zho has only the best intentions at heart but, as an alien and an anthropologist who studies other cultures, he can serve as someone who as an outsider looking in has a clear view of all the existing social and political and social problems of the era such as political unrest, racism, class division, and religious hatred. Nevertheless there are light moments in the book in the confusion and reactions of the aliens to earth's peculiarities. The book does have a lot of hard science fiction elements dealing with technology but the author doesn't let them overwhelm the story elements or the characters who are easy to relate to and care for. You want to keep reading the book just to spend time with them and see what happens to them. This book was received as a Goodreads giveaway.

I was really excited when I started Reading “It Gives You Strength”, because I’ve read a lot of books like this, but I thought this one was going to be different. I was totally right.⠀

This book tells us the story of an Alien Scientist, who is sent to earth on a secret and important mission. This creature must prevent the earth from its end, but it has to save it inside of a human body.⠀

When he finally arrives on earth to begin work, he realizes that the body that was given to him is not suitable, and that his memories are damaged. But that is not the worst thing, because he finds it difficult to remember the details of his plan. The only thing he remembers is that he must find Mike Kelly.⠀

Mike is a complicated guy, but he's the only one who can help Tashan Zho to remember and understand everything. Tashan has to accept he has to protect his new partner because dangerous things are happening around him. ⠀

I won’t tell more about the story because I don’t want to spoil you. I have been a big fan of Sci-fi since I was a little girl, so I love to read and watch everything related to it. So, I’m so happy I was able to get a copy of “It gives you Strength”.⠀

I enjoyed this book so much, I couldn’t put it down. I started reading it after I finished a test, and 4 hours later I was calling my niece to tell her she needed to get a copy too. The author did an amazing job, creating great characters and beautiful dialogues.⠀

Philip Raymond Brown has written his book with a concept that deserves a heartfelt gratitude owing to the utter amount of creativity it ignites. The book cannot possibly be added up to a discrete genre. It is part historical with a theme of war, it is also mystery—which is the basic essence with which the plot thrives, and of course its fantasy. The fantasy in this book is not some ridiculous rocket science jugglery that could earn a thumbs up from some rational human, it is rather very easy to believe - as if you're transported to a new world of imagination.
Tashan Zho has been transferred to the body of Ryan Costello in an attempt to follow a rescue mission to save a child. Humorously, after entering an alienated body, he too forgets what was the mission for - and ends up remembering just one phrase - to find Mike Kelly which has its own risks again since Kelly was the leader of criminal gang.
The book is definitely a recommended read for all the people who wish to explore an another realm of possibility, an another parallel world of happiness, fearlessness and fantasy.

The in-depth explanation of things was practical and the author did it well. It's not a quick read, to be honest. The book was fast-paced. This book had an effect on me, certainly. The storey is distinctive and unusual. The language is clear and easy, and the style of writing is engaging. Published fantastically. The definition is so relevant that I can imagine myself with the characters there. This book I recommend to everyone. Overall, because it was fast and strong, I enjoyed reading this book. Everything is on point in the language, cover & title. The book is amazing, innocent and pure.
I recommend the book altogether. Hats off to Philip Raymond Brown for writing a brilliant book like that. Having not read this author before, he was pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be an inspiring storey. It Gives You Strength by Philip Raymond Brown is a science fiction which also is a historical fiction.
Now I am not a huge fan of science fictions, and hence do not read a lot of those but historical fictions are something I just adore hence I decided to just pick it as the blurb says it's set in the Prohibition era of the United States of America.
Set in 1926 New York, the plot follows an alien anthropologist in a dead human's body where the human body has many medical problems and as a result the alien's memory gets wiped but it just remembers one sentence, to find one particular person called Mike Kelly, which he later finds out is the human being in who's body he has taken residence.
What follows is one roller coaster ride full of twists and turns and a whole bunch of history which just totally won me over.
I honestly loved the writing style, definitely going to read more books by the author. Also would like to say that the story was very well researched, another thing which I really loved.
Also enjoyed the character developments, it was just so stunningly done, just loved it.
It's a complete five stars read for me and a must read for everyone who enjoys science fiction or historical fiction.

If you are new to reading science fiction and happen to love American History, this book is for you! I am new to reading science fiction and I felt that this book was an excellent precursor to this genre due to how Philip Brown made the book so easy yet captivating to follow. Brown does a beautiful job of combining historical and science fiction in "It Gives You Strength". The chapters of Brown's book takes you on an adventurous journey of meeting aliens in a far solar system from earth who happen to interact with historical figures during the Prohibition era. What is so interesting about the book is how Brown successfully combines bootleggers, boxing, and aliens into a story line that simply works! There were many instances when I found myself laughing (funny moments in the story line), intrigued, and concerned for the well being of certain characters that I didn't want to put the book down. Brown really knows how to keep you wanting to turn the pages to read till the very end. I highly recommend "It Gives You Strength"!

The plot was pitched in New York City, a few years later the first world war, where the story of scientist Tashan Zho, an alien scientist, who visits earth for a secret rescue mission uncovers. During the mission, he enters the dying body of an alcohol abuser and things didn't go as per the plan. All he gotta do is to find one named, Mike Kelly. And comes Kelly who is the leader of a criminal gang of world war who helped Tashan Zho with his mission. But was it so easy to help him achieve his goal? Go and grab the book to know!
The storyline is well fabricated with leading characters revealing the plot delicately with suspense and thriller. You will have many questions pondering out and there is a lot that surprises you with each moving moment in the plot. Although the plot is promising and gripping, it lacks the sparkle and missed to hold my attention after a certain point. The plot was made fast-paced and was so fascinating until, in the second half, it lost its charm. Also, I guess I'll learn about few unanswered questions in the story in its sequel. The language is clear and lucid. The writing style could have been better. The cover is attractive and the title is chosen wisely. The author beautifully maintained the facts and records to stick with the year perfectly. I really enjoyed reading few portions of the story that made me smile and lightened my mood. It Gives You Strength by Philip Raymond Brown is a great blend of sci-fi mixed with gangstar drama. I know they both dont match but Brown makes that happen in an interesting way. Coming to the book, we follow the inverse Terminator, Tashan is assigned to get a princess from earth who is struck in a baby of an infant eight years ago. I know this is a lot to process and i'm paraphrasing a lot but that is the basic jist of the story
The best thing this book does is the genre shift it does and how effective that takes place. Once we get to know of the kelly family, the sci-fi world setting till then turns into a dark grim gang family. I like the atmosphere in a book the most in books and im so happy to see such detailed environment in such a story with two stories set in the extremes of the spectrum. I got to know that this books has a sequel named "Harvesting Earthlings for Fun and Profit" and I'm pumped to go along with an another adventure with tashan. Highly recomendded.

Up in the frail and hanging frame of a chronic alcoholic Ryan Costello, The Daganian Anthropologist Dr. Tashan Zho wakes up to fulfill his mission. A mission to save one planet from extinction.
The Lazarus has risen a miracle as it seems or is it something else? When the recently deceased Costello Opens his eyes the Priest reading his last rites is spellbound. Is this the miracle for which he was bound to earth, what a relief when you realize it is not just another of the cults happening in there?
Out in the distant stars, in an advanced race called Daganians, lies a planet with technology far superior to anything which the earthlings can imagine.
The transference, as they seem to refer it helps the Daganians transfer their base consciousness into a body they select. But beware one and all, as the seemingly immortal life of the soul has its clutches around your life too.

The book is one with science fiction, with alien warships and Earthly bootleggers. It has dedicated more than 60% of its length to discovering and honing Zho's Skiirmishing skills in sync with Boxing. It is definitely a treat to your minds if you love boxing and anything concerned with it. The fights are livid with description and you see the boxers flying on their toes to strike inside the ring.
The book has done a terrific job in keeping me occupied and I realized how good it must be to adorn itself with the fickle attention of the likes of me while traveling across genres.
The book is laden with a gradually unfolding mystery that certainly tingles your senses. Mr. Philip Brown did a brilliant job in portraying all the different subplots. Usually, the subplots tend to go wayward when you get into them but in this case, the author knew just when to push in and when to leave it alone. The book has been written in crisp English with no faults whatsoever. The language suits the inhabitants mentioned in the book and also transcends into the correct visualization while you carry it. I do have a question that why all the War heroes went on to follow the steps of Mike Kelly into his bootlegging business but apart from that instance everything seems fine.
Spoiler alert : The title "it gives you strength" relates to a concoction of ale known as Guinness. Well honestly in a tale for alcoholics and bootleggers? This can be expected.
The Lazarus has risen a miracle as it seems or is it something else? When the recently deceased Costello Opens his eyes the Priest reading his last rites is spellbound. Is this the miracle for which he was bound to earth, what a relief when you realize it is not just another of the cults happening in there?
Out in the distant stars, in an advanced race called Daganians, lies a planet with technology far superior to anything which the earthlings can imagine.

It gives you strength by Philip Raymond Brown is an amazing read. It is a mixture of sci-fi and hoodlum drama.
The story revolves around the regal family who decided to have their first vacation but found themselves in front of a drone which wants to kill the whole family. They want to protect their heir at any cost so they leave their daughter's consciousness inside an infant. After some years, an athropologist, Tashan Zho, was sent on a mission to rescue the princess.
The title of the story and the cover is really appropriate. The vocabulary used is really commendable. Plot of the book is very interesting. It is well written with detailed description that made me feel like I am watching an action movie.
Highly recommended.

A highly engrossing and engaging work of fiction that will show you a new dimension of science fiction at its best. Written with the best and wildest of imagination of the author, this book will give you a narrative to be fascinated by.
Quite a unique plot to entertain oneself with, the book serves its purpose to keep the reader intact and hold on to the book till the story comes to an end.

The story revolves around Dr. Tashan who is an alien scientist. He uses the body of a dying man to live in the midst of human. Simultaneously he works on a super secretive mission ! The backdrop of the story is New York City in 1920s shows the artistic taste and touch. The description running parallel to the story leaves us in awe. The writer has the power to encaptivate us with an engaging plot. The dialogues are written with wit and logic.
The clever way of story telling gives space to enjoy. The pace of the story is smooth and steady thereby this book can be converted into a sci-fi series

Philip Raymond Brown has created the perfect blend of sci-fi & historical fiction. The characters are vividly written, with a memorable MC in Mike Kelly, & a well written plot. What I enjoyed most is the attention to detail and historic accuracy the author has. From bootlegging to the Craig Colony in NY, to action packed rounds in a boxing ring to facing off with Jack "Legs" Diamond, It Gives You Strength balances humor, excitement, and suspense throughout. Cannot wait to read another installment.

Moments before a galactic ship is destroyed the life source of the 6 year old princess is transferred to a baby on Earth. A few years later Zho is is likewise transferred to 1920s Earth to rescue the princess before an armada of ships destroys the planet trying to rescue her. Problems arise and Zho can't remember what his mission is and time is running out as the armada is getting closer. Authors writing style was easy to follow and enjoy. Received this book from Goodreads for an honest review.

Brown had me at “Sentient”
Science fiction as a genre is usually not at the top of my list when I venture onto Amazon for a good read. In fact, it’s more likely at the bottom. Nevertheless, Brown’s “It Gives You Strength” broke all of my self-imposed rules for what qualifies as great literature. And given the age of Covid’s realities of an unseen predator emitting from the mouths of strangers to make life as we once knew it unrecognizable, maybe we all need to be more accepting of “science”.
Unbounded by the traditional limitations of earth and its creature's biology and physics, Brown has crafted a delightful romp back to the roaring twenties in the lovely but mostly forgotten Saratoga region of upstate New York. Drawing upon the mostly accurate historical characters of Jack “Legs” Diamond, Jack Dempsey, and Edith Cavell mixed in with Brown’s own creations, he creates a tale with more twists and turns than a Lake Placid ski slope.
The book starts out with a bang with the introduction of Lady Melanie (Tashan Zho), an alien being who will soon come to life in the body of the former Ryan Costello. She is given a mission no less important than “saving the earth”. After meeting up with the bootlegger and aspiring middleweight boxer champ Mike Kelly, Ryan begins his cryptic mission to “protect the Kelly family”. Given Kelly’s criminal line of work it’s clear he needs protection. As Ryan’s mission becomes clearer due to software upgrades provided courtesy of his native Dragan programmers light years away, the tale takes turns up and down the rum running territory from Canada down to Schenectady. Along the way Brown weaves in the character of Father O’Brien, a catholic priest, the mayor of Granville, and any number of Kelly’s dangerous and sometimes bumbling gang of rum running accomplices.
When Ryan’s mission shifts from “protect the Kelly family” to “find Nora”, the story takes a sharp more sensitive turn. Brown’s creation of hybrid characters, part human, part alien, provides him ample poetic license to deeply probe the lines between machine logic and human feeling. It is this mechanism which introduces some of the more intriguing questions created by the story; what is the line between thought and action, consciousness and death, good and evil?
The story comes full circle as the rulers of Dragan thrust themselves back into the mission of Zhou (Ryan Costello) and display all too human character flaws in their adjudication of the earth conflict. Still you are left with the sense that life, if you can assign that word to an alien, will not return to what it was for Zhou, she has simply grown and accomplished too much through her earth experience. We can hardly wait to witness her next adventure.

REVIEW: What a great story! This is a classical sci-fi novel. The tone and pace is perfect and keeps your attention. What makes this story is so great because it builds a solid universe with diverse characters.
Mike Kelly is a character you love to hate, but you don't want to see them fail. I like that Mike was brash and a fighter. It helped move the story along that Kelly has such an exciting life. I love the mobster vibes and corruption
