This continues to be such a great and fantastic series!

Though I can say that I DEFINITELY appreciated the significantly less spookiness in this volume! LOL! In fact, the opening chapter had me laughing so so so much! It was wonderful seeing Chiyo again because she is such a fun character, and because of this, that opening chapter was a joy and blast to read! The ending was perfect in how Mr. Iwai already knew what was up and there was nothing to worry about. LOL!

Also, YAY for seeing Kanji again! I really really liked the mystery in this story because of how Kanji reacted throughout the chapters. While there is definitely some detective work by our duo, it hit differently than the previous volume because Kanji really wanted the culprits to be innocent. The way he freely cried in one scene really had my heart aching. (Also the mystery/case was super well done…as always!)

I've seen a few reviews say this is a romantic story and I'm not sure if it will be one, but I did feel there were at least two VERY cute moments of them that seemed like it could lead to romance. Not sure if it will (and don't think it has to because just these two being together as friends is hilarious and awesome enough), but I did get a little giddy during those scenes. Hehehe!

Oh, I also liked having a little insight into Mr. Iwai's friendship with the police officer! Outside of the opening chapter, that was definitely one of my favorite chapters to read!

Overall, I'm still super enjoying this series! I look forward to seeing what case these two will solve next and where this story will go! Definitely recommend it if you're looking for a fun shoujo mystery!

The chapter about Chiyo was too cute.
And my fav scene in this volume, had to be when Iwai got home, noticed that Kanoko went out in the rain to walk him home so he rushed back out so she could meet him. So sweet!

3.5 stars. I'm enjoying this mystery manga. This volume has a short, single chapter mystery with a side character followed by two multi chapter mysteries that ended with the end of the volume.

This volume had a lot more stories in it, which can feel a bit more disjointed. I like that though, because it gives the opportunity to see more of the side-characters.

I also laughed out loud at some of the art. Kanoko and Iwai have such funny expressions.

The first chapter is... kind of weird. It's an almost slapstick comedy that feels out of place for this series. Sure, there's been humor, but in smaller doses. This chapter was kind of a bore. Fortunately, it's back to the clever mysteries that have made me enjoy this series so far.

This was a solid installment in the series. It started off with a silly case and slowly went on to serious cases. I am starting to think maybe Iwai also has a power (?). Not sure if it is something like Kanoko's or he just is Holmes level intelligent.

This power isn't just about exposing lies. It helps people believe in others. I didn't know it was this strong.

It had been a couple of years since I read a volume of Usotoki Rhetoric, and I remembered not being very impressed with volume 3 (which is likely why I dawdled on picking up this next one). The first story in this volume, featuring Chiyo, confirmed that lukewarm impression.

Things improved quite a bit after that, with the return of its leads in two or three short mysteries. I especially liked the last story, where the storytelling allowed me to figure out clues a moment or two before Soma revealed them to the other characters.

While I'm not a huge mystery reader, I really like other aspects of this manga, like the details in the backgrounds that create a good sense of 1920s small-town Japan. The shorter "rainy day" episode was a beautifully atmospheric change of pace. I also like how the subtleties of "lying" are explored through these mysteries, i.e. how a perfectly innocent person can lie to themself, or how someone might lie to protect someone else.

There's an obvious translation mistake in the last story. (This isn't a spoiler for the mystery, don't worry.) Early on, it's mentioned that the murder victim's mentors had been invited to the engagement party his brother was throwing at his house. Later on in conversation, it's Kanji's mentors who had been invited, which makes no sense. Kanji ended up at the brother's house by circumstance when he missed the boat to the mainland. (I think this is what was meant rather than "main island." Another potential typo.) It's a minor error, but one that shows a lack of attention to detail in the translation.

This volume starts with a short story (Chapter 15) featuring Fujishima Chiyo and her ridiculously wild imagination. (3/5).

The next two chapters (Chapters 16 and 17) features a story with a focus on Mr. Hanasaki and his mysterious disappearance (4/5).

Chapter 18 is a really sweet story and slice-of-life interaction between Kanoko and Mr. Iwai (4.5/5).

In Chapters 19 and 20, Mr. Iwai and Kanoko are finally hired to solve a murder (the murder of Mr. Shirai Mineo)! (4/5)

Overall, this is a very cute a sweet series and reminds me of Detective Conan.

「嘘」にも色んな事情、色んな種類があるとわかる。
そして、探偵ものというよりは、「嘘」をめぐる人々の在り方を描いてる作品で、読んでいて色々考えさせられる。
登場人物達も、カリカチュアな薄っぺらい人はおらず、皆それぞれ厚みがあるキャラでいい。
あと、探偵ものは大抵警察がアホのように描かれるけど、ここではちゃんと優秀なのも好感が持てる。
やはり明治時代が舞台の話は萌える。

This is getting interesting I'm enjoying the chapters that weren't adapted in the tv series. I'm also loving seeing more of Hanasaki-san and the rest of the characters and worldbuilding!
