This second book was just as adventurous and action-packed as the first; I love the steampunk elements and the covers of this series! The main character is so cute and sassy, and her friend is just as interesting as her! i love how the backstories of the main characters get revealed in this one, and how the mystery goes on. A quick fun read!

What an enchanting read! Moonlocket is the wonderful sequel to Cogheart, and again we follow Lily and Robert as they run through steampunk-Victorian London, this time to catch a truly treacherous villain.

This story takes place in the year 1897, eight months after the events of "Cogheart." While London prepares for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, the city gets shaken up by the break-out of England’s most wanted criminal, the famous escapologist Jack Door.
Meanwhile, young Robert tries to find information about his mother, who abandoned Robert when he was only a baby. During their search for answers however, Lily, Robert and Malkin don’t only find the mysterious Moonlocket, but also cross paths with Jack Door, who appears to be very interested in the locket…and in Robert.

This novel is a great continuation of the first Cogheart Adventure. The story has a similar great mix of mystery and adventure, a fast pace, and creative steampunk world-building. Peter Bunzl’s 19th-century London isn’t just filled with air-powered machines and clockwork robots, but also with the first Underground system and mysterious theatre- and psychic shows.
Old characters return (I just love nosy reporter Anna), but the new characters will charm you as well: Jack Door is a proper evil mastermind, and street-smart Bartholomew or “Tolly” is a real sweetheart.

“Lily grabbed Tolly’s hand. “Please Tolly, let me help Robert. Despite the dangers, I have to prove Papa wrong. I need to show him that I’m just as strong as anybody else.”

Something about this chimed with Tolly; she could see it in his eyes. “I know what you mean,” he said. “People are always judging me, calling me a guttersnipe, or a ragamuffin. They think that I’m not as clever or capable as them because of who I am. But the truth is, I’m more so. I only wish I didn’t constantly have to prove it.”

As you can see from Tolly’s quote, the story doesn’t only focus on adventure but also on teaching children valuable lessons. Maybe more than in the first book, themes like family, friendship, and honesty play a major role. Lily struggles with her father’s overprotectiveness and wishes she could prove herself, and Robert especially has to make some difficult decisions.
Is family something you choose? Are love and trust the same thing? Such questions are not only important for him but for other young readers as well, and to see how brave Robert deals with these problems will hopefully inspire many a child.

So Moonlocket really shows itself a worthy sequel. The book is packed with mystery, mayhem, and mechanicals, where young heroes run through the vivid streets of Victorian London to catch a notorious criminal.
Bunzl’s writing is engaging, fun, and will appeal to readers young and old, so if you are a fan of science-fiction and steampunk, you should definitely read this.

This book was so nice. A very cute story with relatable, fun characters. It's a children's novel but by no means childish, I loved reading it as an adult.

It takes place in a steampunk setting, the world building is very well done. It's easy to read and engages you really, I couldn't put it down. Sometimes it felt a little too fast in my opinion. When I was done reading I wanted more. I'll pick up the other installments in this series as well.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC to read.

What an enchanting read. In this book, we follow Lily and Robert as they make their way through a steampunk London to catch the escapologist Jack Door while also learning about friendship and family. It is a middle-grade book, but definitely can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is enchanting in its worldbuilding and teaches a few valuable lessons. I feel like it would have been a favourite if I would have read it when I was the target age.

I have to say I really enjoyed the characters. They are real and brave and flawed and get stuff done. I enjoyed that they also showed the characters' flaws, it made them more human compared to some other middle-grade book characters. Lily was brave and determined and bossy but I understood her longing to come out of her very protected bubble and see the world. I understood how she was afraid but still wanted to take risks. Robert was another great character. I was pleased by the aspect of this book that focuses on him finding his mom and I also believe that Robert dealing with the grief of losing his Da was realistic. Robert and Lily make a great team, but let's not forget Malkin, my favourite (cat) fox. I love him and his attitude-problem and cleverness. Jack Door was a little predictable and stereotypical, but I enjoyed the moments were Finlo doubted Jack and wasn't the "perfect villain".

You are sucked right into this world. It is set in a steampunk London of the past. The writing perfectly matches the world. It feels magical with all the clockwork and mechanicals. Kids trying to catch criminals will never be truly realistic, but it is handled very well here. Robert and Lily don't always make the right decision and don't find clues like it's nothing. The book gets dark and violent sometimes, which was good because I often find middle-grade books writing about, for example, a dangerous man who has killed someone yet he barely harms anyone in the book. Here, it's done more convincing. It's dark but not too dark.

In conclusion, this is a whimsical middle-grade book with wonderful characters and a nice story set in steampunk London.

Moonlocket is the sequel to Cogheart, a middle grade steampunk book I read earlier this year. I am conflicted on this book to be honest.

And I am just going to start with the problem I have. It is the ending. The end of Cogheart already had some violence that was on the border. But the ending of Moonlocket has more. And especially the combination of violence, guns, family members, drowning and death is a combination that I don’t think should have happened in this middle grade. Because you do have to realize you write for middle grade. This isn’t about sheltering children. If we aren’t going to write age appropriate within the target groups of middle grade and children’s books what is even the point of having these categories? Middle grade should be age appropriate for every child within the range of 8-12 years old. And yes I am sure there are kids that can deal with that but the target group isn’t just for those kids. So yes I docked heavily in my star rating for this book.

Other than that I think that the story in itself is fine. We focus more on Robert who is trying to find his mother. Trying to find out what that part of him is. How she could leave him? Why she isn’t coming now that his father is dead. I think that for kids who only have one parent, who are in a similar situation, this will be very relatable. I’m glad to see that he was clearly welcomed in Lily’s family still whatever he choose to do.

I thought Malkin’s , lily’s mechanical fox, was a bit too much of a negative nancy in this one. Man he could certainly get my mood down. I think Lily’s father is too naïve that he thinks he can leave his daughter and his friend alone at home for days at an end and for them not to get up to things that he forbade with only mechanical people around them to tell them no. Which they know how to shut off and can run away from easily.

So yeah I think the story itself is great middle grade but detail wise I think that there is a lot that don’t work for middle grade or don’t make sense.

This is a story that does its wonderful cover justice. We follow Lily, Malkin and Robert as they try to catch a famous criminal in Victorian, steampunk London. It is all you could want from a middle-grade novel. The main characters are brave, smart and get things done. But they are also flawed, they get scared, they do stupid things, they are real… It is a book filled with puzzles and adventure. But it doesn’t focus only on adventure. It also discusses what it means to be different, what family really is, how it feels to loose someone close to you, and if love also means trust.

I enjoyed this read a bit more than the first book, even though that was wonderful as well. This was for one because we were plunged into the action straight away, and it lasted till the very end. The world building felt a bit more effortless. We are introduced to some new parts of London, filled to the brim with glorious steampunk elements such as mechanicals, mechanimals and airships. Lastly, the villain in this story was truly wonderful. He is scary, smart, ruthless and cunning. He has got quite a few tricks up his sleeve, which really makes him a force to be reckoned with.

The writing is wonderful, whimsical and fun. This really helps to make it a heartwarming story, enjoyable for young and old. I highly recommend picking up this series, and I cannot wait for the third installment.

A fun steampunk adventure as two best friends and a mechanical fox try to stop a criminal mastermind, Jack Diamond. Moonlocket is the second installment in the Coghearts series, but you don't need to have read the first book to enjoy this one.

Set in an alternative steampunk Victorian-era London, Jack Diamond, a world-renowned thief and notorious showman, has escaped from prison with plans to recover the missing Blood Diamond belonging to the Queen of England. Before long, Robert, Lily and Malkin are caught up in the midst of this scheme as they race against time to find the Blood Diamond before Jack. I liked that the plot was fast-paced and kept you engaged the entire time.

Also, can we take a moment and appreciate the steampunk setting. Loved the worldbuilding and how vibrant it was- I especially liked the mechanimals. Malkin was the absolute best because who can resist a snarky mechanical fox?

What I also enjoyed about this book was the deep discussions it offered. Lily has a mechanical heart and this leads to inner conflict as she tries to determine whether she is human or not whilst subconsciously questioning what defines human. Additionally, Robert longs for a family to call his own as he misses his late father and has never met his mother who left him at infancy. The overarching theme of finding a sense of belonging was well developed in this novel. Really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next installment.

I received a free copy through Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion

This one was as enjoyable as the first book. The only difference that I experienced was the pacing, I had the feeling that this one was more fast-paced and I liked that a lot. Furthermore, it kind of discusses the same topics as the previous book, that is friendship and loyalty. However, this one also discussed family dynamics and I think this story did well in showing that not every family is happy and perfect.

Moonlocket by Peter Bunzl is the second book in The Cogheart Adventures trilogy. Lily and Robert are trying to figure out what the Moonlocket is, but they get a rude awakening when secrets from Robert's past come to light.

This is a story that can be read as a stand alone, though there are mentions of instances from the first book, it will in no way ruin this story for the reader.

I thought this was a fun, yet sad story at times. I love the characters and the world the author has created.

An inspiring, fast-paced adventure following Robert and Lily (not forgetting Makin!) as they race around London trying to solve a mystery involving the criminal mastermind Jack of Diamonds and a family heirloom. The characters are brilliant and the writing style is wonderful - Peter Bunzl has created a world I don't ever want to leave!

When notorious Jack Door escapes prison in to reclaim the Blood Moon Diamond, Lily and Robert are the ones who must stop him.

“There’s no point living in fear of what might be when it prevents you enjoying the freedom of what is.” Lily has never quite felt normal, especially after discovering that she is a hybrid—a human with a cogheart implanted in her chest. While she strugles with these feelings, she learns how important family is. Robert faces a similar challenge. He’s been abandoned by his ma, and eager to reunite and become a family again. But maybe his family is what he makes it to be. Meanwhile, Jack Door is searching for a mysterious Moonlocket that holds the key to locating the famous Blood Moon Diamond, a gift from Albert to Queen Victoria. When Robert and Lily have a mysterious run-in with Jack, they unlock secrets to Robert’s past that send them on a dangerous mission to reclaim the Blood Moon Diamond before Jack.

Peter Bunzl strikes again! This is the second installment of the Cogheart Adventure series, a charming an enjoyable tale of courage. Lily and Robert both face new challenges that allow them to grow and confront their fears. In the end, they prove that just because they are kids, doesn’t make them less capable of success. Their fierce determination is what drives them to succeed where the adults haven’t. I love this about middle-grade stories.

One of my favorite quotes: “If you didn't divide it up, carve things into categories, it was all one in the same anyway - waves and oceans, dawns and sunsets, noise and silence. Life was a single connected river that ran through mechanicals, people, animals, planets. Everything that ever was or would be, all mixed together in a soup of being; of shouting and jumping, moving and bumping. Echoes of the great creation.”

Bunzl does a great job with the plot. It follows a predictable, but enjoyable path that makes for a quick and exciting read: bad guy gets tangled up with the story’s heroes who must solve a mystery and save the day. It’s a trope that works perfectly with this story, and there are enough fresh ideas sprinkled throughout that doesn’t make it feel overplayed. I love the way the clockwork technology in this story is woven into Victorian England, complete with mechanicals, hybrids, and history. It continues to have a steampunk/fantasy feel that I really enjoy.

I’ve already got the third book lined up, and plan to purchase the fourth as well, which is out this month!

The sequel to the hugely popular Cogheart, Bunzl reunites Lily, Robert and their mechanical fox, Malkin, for another action packed adventure. The notorious showman, trickster and thief extraordinaire, Jack Door, has escaped from his high security prison cell and is out to reclaim his greatest prize, a magnificent jewel belonging to the queen and which, even after his arrest, was never recovered. With the police baffled by Jack's tricks, it falls to Lily, Robert and Malkin, to thwart his criminal schemes. Set in a reality where machines, airships and even sentient robots are powered by cogs and clockwork, this book is full of wonder, strange contraptions and novel adventure. Bunzl writes beautifully and the world he creates is vivid, fun and intriguing. A truly good read.

Received with many thanks from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Another version of this review can be found here.

Eight months after their hair-raising adventure in Cogheart, we find Robert at Brackenbridge Manor with Lily, her papa, Malkin and the rest. Things are peaceful until one day they stumble across the mysterious Moonlocket in the ashes of Robert's old home, and what's more, the notorious criminal mastermind, the escapologist Jack Door or Jack of Diamonds as he's known has just broken out of prison- and is on the lookout for the Moonlocket no less!

Lily, Robert and Malkin soon find themselves in the thick of the most deadly of games. What exactly does the Moonlocket signify? How does Robert figure into all of this? Will Lily and Robert manage to outwit Jack in his own game? We see all this and more in this delightful steampunk adventure.

This time around the author wastes no time in plunging into the adventure- right from Jack's escape to Lily and Robert stumbling across the Moonlocket, things are kept exciting and I was instantly pulled into the story. The surprises kept coming, and the author manages to weave emotion into the proceedings of the story and truly is laudable. We see Robert pining for his da, Lily aching for her mom, we see Lily's papa struggle to protect her against all odds, against her very wishes and we see Lily's conflicting feelings towards this, and all this make us connect to our favourite spunky adventurers more than ever.

The word-building, just like in the first book is very well done. We see various other parts of Victorian London not explored in book one in all their steampunk glory, and the author's touches to this with mechanicals, mechanimals, airships and the likes was, of course, fantastic.

We have a handful of new characters in this book, with most of the loved ones from the first book being retained as well (Captain Springer, Mrs Rust and the others, I'm pleased to report, were just as wonderful here). However, I was quite a bit bummed that Anna didn't have as important a role here, and I quite missed the mechanicals when things started heating up too. One other rather small complaint I have is that Lily and her papa's conflicts weren't very satisfactorily resolved, but I am quite very happy with how things turned out for Robert- elaborating on this would prove to be very spoiler-y indeed, so I'll hold back here.

Packed full of wonder, magic, mystery and mayhem , Moonlocket is a worthy sequel to the brilliant Cogheart and this is a must-read if you loved the latter!

The story idea: 5/5
The realization of the story: 4/5
The characters: 4/5
The cover: 5/5
Enjoy factor: 5/5

Hurrah for Waterstones and early release copies! Thanks to them, I got to spend the last day of my Easter holidays snuggled up with this, the second Cogheart adventure. I say snuggled; a more accurate description would be perched on the edge of my seat from beginning to end…

It's been eight months since Lily and Robert’s last adventure. Robert has moved into Brackenbridge Manor, and life is peaceful. Well, until two seemingly unrelated events plunge the pair into another heart-stopping adventure…

Jack Door, escapologist extraordinaire, pulls off his greatest feat to date – escaping from Pentonville Prison – with only one aim, to recover the mysterious Moonlocket. Secrets from Robert’s past start unraveling faster than the pair can understand the dangers they place them in.

Moonlocket is packed full of mystery, mayhem and mechanicals in a gripping adventure with family and friendship at it's heart. Peter Bunzl has once again created a world that sucks you into the steampunk streets, skies and sewers of Victorian England, routing for Lily and Robert against a criminal mastermind who can only be described as evil.

There's even ‘A Dictionary of Curious Words’ at the end to help with unfamiliar, technical language.

In my opinion, this is even better than Cogheart; can't wait to see what's next!

Great for fans of Mortal Engines, Ned's Circus of Marvels and The Diamond Thief.

You can find this review and all of my others over at www.readbookrepeat.wordpress.com

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Jolly Fish Press, and the author via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Jack Door, the notorious escapologist has escaped an inescapable prison. He's in on a search for the Moonlocket which will help him get back the one thing in the world he desires most, the Blood Moon Diamond. He stole it fifteen years ago, after which, he was imprisoned, now he has the chance to get it back and escape for good. Lily and Robert end up embroiled in Jack's plans, uncovering a lot about Robert's past along the way. They must stay one step ahead of the Jack of Diamonds, before it's too late.

Moonlocket is the second book in Bunzl's Cogheart Adventures series. I was surprised to find that this story centred more around Robert, his family and their past, for some reason I assumed the story of the actual cogheart would be continued on in this series format, and this change pleasantly surprised me. I thought it was absolutely fantastic to have the spotlight on Robert, who we first meet in Cogheart, and who helps Lily on her fantastic adventure, it was lovely to get to see a different side of him and have him be less of a supporting character and be more in the forefront.

The story itself was wonderfully written, and well thought out. Opening with Jack Door's escape from prison and following on with Lily's father heading to London to help try and fix the Queen's Elephanta for her upcoming jubilee. Of course Dr. Hartman wants Lily to be kept hidden and safe due to the cogheart, but she has other ideas when her and Robert stumble upon Jack in his search for the Moonlocket. A fast paced, non-stop adventure, intended for a younger audience but still able to be enjoyed by adults. That to me is fantastic story writing. You know that the characters are young but Bunzl doesn't coddle his younger readers by tip-toeing around the more unpleasant aspects of life that happen in his stories, I absolutely love this about his writing style.

I came to adore Robert quite a bit in this story, as I said above, it's focused more on him this time and Lily takes a bit of a backseat which was nice. I still found that Lily annoyed me a little at times, but in the end, she is a child, and children do have a way of believing that they know best and they NEED to do things to help the situations that arise. I still absolutely adore the mechanicals and mechanimals and this story had just as much whimsy and wonder as the first.

The steampunk world that Bunzl has created fills me with such joy what with all it's cogs and clocks and ticking and tocking, it actually made me forget that this series is set in the late 1800s and it gives a sense of an old-timey world with a futuristic twist.

The mystery and the adventure itself was well thought out and beautifully executed. I don't want to say too much as I don't want to give anything away because I feel like it's better to find things out as the characters do. So for this review, I'll leave it at that.

If you want a fun adventure, fit for young and old alike, jump into Peter Bunzl's Cogheart Adventures. You won't be disappointed.

Ayo kita tunggu sama² kelanjutannya! 😆🙌

Enchanting ~ Fast-Paced ~ Captivating

tl;dr: Even young people can foil criminal masterminds

This book feels like a classic. A girl and boy must foil an evil mastermind who is seeking the Moonlocket. It's the second in the series. I haven't read the first book, but I didn't need it to love this book. The world=building is amazing. It is 19th century London but different. The characters are charming, and their interactions sweet. I loved that there is technology but also humanity. This book is a wonderful balance of forward-momentum and character-vingettes. I really totally adored this book, and look-forward to seeing the faces of the young people (and old people) who get to be part of this special, extraordinary world. Get this book, and share this book. So intensely enjoyable. I can't think of enough superlatives for this book.

Thank you so much to North Star Editions/Jolly Fish Press who sent me an ebook through NetGalley to review of MoonLocket written by Peter Bunzel.

The story is a Victorian era steampunk story that follows two kids Lily and Robert and Malkin (a mechanical fox). A prisoner who goes by Jack of Diamonds is on the loose and hunting to find his rare diamond he lost and the moonlocket. This takes the kids on an adventure as they have to escape away from him as he believes Robert knows where it is. Lily gets the chance to prove to herself and her father that she is stronger than they thought.

This story is certainly a story that children would enjoy and get a thrill from reading, its action packed from the start and will get them solving the mystery on their own. It has great lead characters and is set in a unique way with the steampunk theme that you very rarely see in books.

For me personally it’s not a book I’d read again but I personally am not a steampunk fan and that’s okay, it was still an interesting read and I’m glad I got the opportunity to read it.

I loved moon locket the second book in the cog heart series by Peter Bunzl. It was so exciting and intriguing to read and i think it was better than the first one. I loved the mystery and the action and the reconnecting family feel of this book those are the genres o the book. I liked the different settings as well the gloomy London to the bold bright entertaining theatre. My new favourite characters where Selena and Caddy Roberts ma and sister i liked how they put on a good show to captivate audiences they where also generous and kind to Robert. My favourite part was when lily and Robert were trying to crack the code to open the safe for the blood moon diamond which was what jack door wanted a criminal mastermind that part for me was very intriguing and exciting i didn't know which way it was gonna go. Peter Bunzl did another fantastic job on this book. I really like his writing style. Good job Peter Bunzl!!

Buat aku gak mau berhenti sampai akhir

The second story of Lily and Robert on a cogheart adventure. An action packed story with plenty of twist and turns to keep the reader guessing. This story raises some brilliant issues such as belonging and feeling like you don't fit in. It shows the importance of friendship, and how it is sometimes more important than family, and how a these relationships can get you through hard times. I can't wait to read the third book!

This is the second book in the Cogheart series and explores Robert’s story more than Lily’s.

On his quest to find his mother he finds more than he bargains for in the best & worst ways, discovering he has more family than he thought.

Lily & Robert are solving a mystery in Victorian London that could explain everything. They also wonder if family has to be the one you’re born from, or if it’s something created through love & trust.

This time the focus is more on Robert, who finds a mysterious moonlocket and has to find out what the link is with his mother and the rest of his family. Meanwhile escaped criminal Jack of Diamonds seems to be after the locket too.
As usual, poor Malkin is trying in vain to keep the kids from getting into too much trouble but they don't listen and instead they are off on an adventure to London via airship.

I read this to my daughter and easily enjoyed it as much as her! An exhilarating adventure full of mystery and intrigue, written with ingenuity and an empathy that touched the heart. Wonderful characters and a perspective on Victorian London that I simply loved! Together with Cogheart they make fabulous reading for any child aged 8+

This was a bit of a let-down after book one in the series.
There was still the whole steampunk-element, and I rather enjoy the British language and style, but the story didn't really captivate me.
Despite that, I enjoyed it, and flew through it - as much as I can these days - so will be interested in reading another book in this series, if there ever is one.
